Texans Offense

Maybe I had too much sake last night. I can't say that I drank it cause the stuff is warm and just gets absorbed into the bloodstream before it reaches your stomach.

Anyway. My drunken inspiration is this:

Shouldn't our offense be playing to our strength. Schaub gets rid of the ball damn fast. Why not more four and five wide formations ?

Davis, Daniels, Jones, Walters, Green, Anderson et al. And sooner or later Andre Johnson.

(now that I'm sober I don't know how to deny it ).

Good question
Running a spread would at least force teams to play nickel and dime against us (in theory) and create some running lanes (in theory).

Re: Good question
I would hope that they test the theory.

Andre Johnson, Kevin Watler, Jacoby Jones, Andre Davis and Owen Daniel in my five wide.

re:
the problem is that it's hard to implement such a change in the middle of a season without the extra week.  I don't remember Kubes ever running that kind of offense on a regular basis (though i could be wrong).

The idea is sound - definitely.  I just don't know if it could be executed.

Also
You know what else might work out well for the offense? Not being so shitty. It might even work for the defense as well.

Not Being Shitty
Well I've often read of different coaches offensive philosphies. Run, pass or whatever. Most are flexible.

The one that impresses me the most are the ones that adapt their philosphy to the strengths of their personnel.

We don't have the personnel to hammer the run. We can pass all over. ( except the end zone).

I would not expect any wholesale changes like this out of Kubiak. But you wonder maybe he should give it a look now and then.

What other tricks do you have ?

re:
First, a tip: reply to this under a thread helps keep things a bit more organized.  I think this response is directed to me, so I'll respond.  If not, I blame Tim.

It's more a matter of making such an intense change to your philosophy during the season.  Kubiak very much leans toward pro-set, I, 2 TE, and 3 WR formations.  Going to 4 wide and OD would be a pretty radical change.  It's not likely he has more than a couple (by that, no more than 5-7) plays in the playbook that employs that set.

I think you can say that he committed a tactical error in putting so much reliance on a healthy Green and then thinking that Gado wouldn't be teh suk.  Well, I think most people could've called that error.  Still, throughout the spring and the summer and then the pre-season, you are working off the playbook you have developed.  To change mid-season is simply tough.

Again, I don't disagree with the sentiment.

As far as my bright ideas?  I can think of several with the natural redhead in front of me.  As far as football, I think we need to get Lundy on the team to at least get us some sort of 1. relief for Green and 2. threat instead of Gado.  I'd also employ more 2 TE sets with Putzier and OD and look for the mismatch.  Finally, go with 3 WR, 1 TE and 1 RB looks in a semi-spread offense, focusing on the mis-matches you can get there.

Until JJ and Dre are healthy, though, we are in a bit of a bind.

Re: Offensive Woes
As much as I'd like to see the five-wide, spread offense employed, I agree with BFD that it's probably asking too much for such a dramatic shift in the middle of the season and before a bye week.

Can't believe, however, that we haven't seen more 2 TE sets featuring Daniels and Putzier.  Hell, I guess I'm just shocked we haven't seen more Jeb Putzier.  The guy's not even active every Sunday.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Re: Offense Woes
Actually I was replying to the general tone of the thread .. i.e.

Yes it's an idea worth exploring ..

But

a.) It's too late in the season

2.) It's not Kubiaks thing

III.) Quit being shitty

I would agree more with 2 than with a.)

"What other tricks do you have ?"

That was for Kubiak.

ah...
Lo siento mucho.

I blame Tim.

(See how easy that is?)

[I like Liston's answer, myself, but I am easy that way.]

Putzier
I don't know what you guys have seen from Putzier this season, but in the few times I've seen him on the field participating in plays, the guy has absolutely stunk. Has he not been the direct cause of more interceptions for opposing defenses than he has passes caught himself? Dude is playing volleyball and setting for the bad guys.

well..
can't deny that, sadly.

he is a threat, and a good one at that, when the matchups are good AND he can squeeze the damn leather.

Figured
He probably played is way out of favor and into the doghouse.

i didn't think
that was possible on this team.  see, e.g., Faggins, Petey, and Gado, Samkon.

If it's possible
to play your way into the doghouse then I would think Travesty Johnson would be in there with a very short leash.

I know...
he was chopped by Trent Green and that's bad, but he's been an emberassment "to me" since he was drafted.  That was Casserley wasn't it?

I wouldn't mind at all if Travesty was cut or traded.
