Amobi Okoye Is The Newest Texan!

More later, but I love this pick.  Trade would have been nice, but I'll definitely take The Phenom at No. 10.  Defense has gotten a lot stronger.

Can you say
Pass Rush boys and girls?

Anyone remember the last badass Nigerian we had in Houston?  Hint:  His last name starts with O, and ends in lajuwon.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Woot!
It worked out for us perfectly! I would have been happy to see a trade here, but my hunch of Okoye came through and I think he will be a great fit.

On a side note, I am smiling on the inside watching Brady Quinn squirm with his ugly girlfriend... Does that make me a bad person?

RE: Bad Person?
Nope.  It just makes you one of us.

I'm having serious flashbacks of the same joyous feeling last year, watching Matt squirm in his chair.

Re: Quinn
No, that makes you an American.  Revel in his discomfort.

Viva Okoye!

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

"Viva Okoye!"
While I'm fairly certain Spanish is not the native language of Nigeria, this sure is a catchy slogan.

I vow to yell it out for every sack he gets as a Texan.

19 Years Old
There are definitely some fans & critics who are skeptical about Okoye being so very young.  And I completely understand what drives this concern.

However, his age is the #1 thing that has me so excited.  Here's why:

  • He should have a few extra years in his career
  • The dude could still have room to grow physically
  • He must be very intelligent and mature to be where he is at this age
  • I personally believe he has great character, and will be a leader in the locker room very soon

I love this pick for the Texans
If the biggest question mark about the guy is he's TOO YOUNG, I don't think you can go wrong.  He's a high character guy, very smart, and very talented.  This is a kid who was playing college ball at age 16.  Okoye and Williams is a great pairing.

Amazingly, they have already updated Okoye's profile.  I love that his high school coach had him play Madden in order to learn the game...sort of like Hakeem coming to UH as a soccer goalie.

Player Profile
For those who have been living in a cave for a while {cough, Scott, cough}, here is the NFL.com Player Profile for the newest Texan, Amobi Okoye.

Okoye
From the highlights, he looks like a very penetration capable defensive lineman: not just a plug the hole kinda guy.  We're going to have a ridiculous defense if this keeps up for a couple years.
Our day will come.

True
And with that amount of penetration at 19 years old, he probably should have played for USC.

If anyone doesn't get that fun little pun, then I apologize for your idiocy.  Remember, I didn't say it was hilarious, I said it was fun.

I Like Puns
Fans have to love the makings of the defensive line--Williams, Okoye, Weaver, and ???? (fill in the blank).  Coupled with the ridiculously deep linebacking corps, things are looking up.  Although I still think Houston looks WR in Round Three, secondary help should be the focus of Round Two.

for some teams, yes.  For the Texans, no.

RE: Round 2
WTF are you talking about?  Do we have a 2nd round pick that I haven't heard about?  Are you doing Jello shots already?

Typo
I meant Round Three.  My bad.  And yes, I am blasted.  I was maintaining until Medicine Woman was still on the board at No. 10.  Though I knew the Texans wouldn't draft him, I problem-drank.  I'm only human.

But
If you are getting blasted, then what type of job security does BFD have around here?

No shi!t to that.  Am I the only one around here sober?  I'll get right to work on remedying that!

I'm pushing these predictions back over to the Open Thread.

19 years old
I like Okoye a lot, but I don't know that I agree with this talk that his young age will lead to a longer career for him.  Is it not possible that entering the NFL at such a young age with a body not as developed as the men on the other side of the line will make him a higher risk for injuries?

Re: Okoye's Youth
Scott, thanks for checking out BRB.  We hope to see you around here on a regular basis.  With regard to your comment, you raise a valid point, though I think the jury's still out until AO's first injury.  Thanks again for reading.

Checkmate
Do they even have tag-team chess?  Well, they should.

If I had been drinking milk while reading that comment, then I'm pretty sure it would have come out my nose.  Lucky for me I wasn't, huh.
