SB Nation Mock Draft--Texans Trade!

In the words of Ron Burgandy, I have an urgent news bulletin.  Your Houston Texans have agreed to trade the tenth overall pick in the SB Nation 2007 NFL Draft to Buffalo in exchange for the No. 12 and No. 92 overall picks in the SB Nation 2007 NFL Draft.

Criticism?  Praise?  Indifference?  Thoughts on what we should do now at No. 12?

Buffalo
Do you know who is running their mock franchise, as they don't seem to have an SBN site?

If so, then can you find out whom they are selecting with the #10 pick?

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Nevermind
I just saw your comment in the Diary that they are selecting Patrick Willis, LB, Miss

Also
I am now a huge fan of this trade for both sides.  Everyone has been predicting SF to take Willis at #11, so it was perfect for Buffalo to move up to #10 and 'steal' him.  And lord knows we could use the extra draft pick on Day 1.

This almost seems quite realistic.

Re: Realistic
Indeed, we wanted to keep our fake draft as real to form as we could.  I agree that this is actually a feasible trade.  If Smithiak were to pull this off on April 28th, I would be doing backflips.  And claiming that they got the idea from BRB.  And then demanding compensation for providing the inspiration for their draft-day dealings.

#12
If Hall is available, I cast my vote in that direction.  If not, then Okoye would be a solid pick.

Hall over Reggie Nelson?  Hall over Okoye?  Hmmmmmmmm...

Sell it to me
I'm no expert on all the players, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. (don't tell my wife)

Is Nelson better than Hall?  If so, why is there such a discrepency between them on every draft board?

Also, to clarify, I can't really decide between Hall & Okoye.  I would be very happy if we land either one.......and since there is only 1 pick ahead of us, there is a decent chance one of these guys will be available.

Re: Selling Reggie
Assuming I actually did prefer Nelson over Hall, I wouldn't present my reasons for doing so until we got on the clock.  BRB might be bugged.

RE: Bugged
Seriously?  You mean like some guy (we'll call him 'gatling') posting here to find out our thoughts, when really he is a regular at Niners Nation?

I mean, could you clarify?  I don't think I'm grasping what your definition of "bugged" is.

Thoughts
I was really more interested in Buffalo's thoughts.  There isn't a master list anywhere I could find for the non-SBN sites involved, so asking here was the next best thing.  You guys do have a nice site here, I've enjoyed reading the 4 or 5 different diaries/stories I've gone through so far.

RE: Nice Site
All credit goes to Tim & Scott for getting this started a few months ago, and continuing to promote a good atmosphere around this place.

Hopefully, other than a nearly-blind love of our Texans, the biggest thing you picked up on is the good atmosphere at this site.  We may not be the smartest bunch, but we sure have fun pretending we are.

Oh, and I decided to be a bit hypocritical today....so I voted on your 9ers site for whom to select.  I won't tell you who I voted for, but I'll narrow it down to 2 guys if you ask nicely.

Cool
I read alot of the MLB SBN sites, the Astros have a good one with Crawfish Boxes.  I've always thought the best way to find out about another team is to communicate with their fans.  You guys definitely have a good vibe going here, I'll definitely be checking back regularly.

I hope you voted for Carriker, I noticed you guys aren't any higher on Branch than I am.

by gatling on Apr 3, 2007 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, yes...
But I voted that way for much more selfish reasons.  We don't really have a need at DE in the 1st Round (this year).

And while I would prefer Okoye over Branch for the Texans, I can't say I would be highly upset by his selection.  He may have slid down, but the guy is still a potential Top-10 pick in 4 weeks.

Word on the street
Is that the Niners are getting a decent offer from Denver.

I wonder if anyone told Denver that Jay Cutler has already been selected?

Nevermind (maybe)
Talks are breaking down b/n SF & DEN.  It seems that Denver might be just a tease, and not really the type to enter into a long-term commitment.

I hope they read this site enough to realize that 72.8% of my posts are sarcastic.

Re: Niners
Looks like the latest over at Niners Nation is that the talks with Denver have broken down, and they'll be selecting Branch.  As such, we're basically on the clock.

Denver has indicated they may want to reopen talks with us for the No. 12 pick; I assume they will once again offer No. 21 and their two third-rounders.  What does everyone think about that?

Or do we jump on Reggie Nelson to solve our FS woes?  Or Okoye?  Or Hall?  Or a mystery guest?  Thoughts?

In that case...
Has anyone else noticed how pretty Denver looks today?  I mean, I would definitely go out with Denver if given the chance.  I just said all that 'tease' stuff because I was so heart-broken.

But I'll completely understand if Denver decides to ask out BF(mb)D.....for obvious reasons of endowment.

49ers
They are presently debating between Branch & Carriker.

Either way, I don't believe this should sway our decision.

Let's see what "is that a new haircut" Denver has to offer.  I think we will still have a very viable starter with the #21 pick.

by Shake on Apr 3, 2007 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

dang
if I had any confidence that hall, nelson, or okoye would slide to #21, I'd say do it.  Revis is a thought (with the knowledge he'll almost certainly move to S).  Brandon Meriweather?

but, then again, we can look at other positions.  Joe Staley, OT?  Sidney Rice, WR?

There will still be talent at #21, and I've long argued that the Texans need to focus on collecting talent and depth.  So, yeah, trading here has a certain attraction.

Returning the Favor
As dirty as it may feel, I'll agree with BF(mb)D.

There are a lot of needs to fill, as we have discussed on BRB once or twice. (I would add links, but having that many might crash the site)

The general rule is that 1st day picks are very likely to be starters at some point in their first year.  When there are this many holes to plug, then Quantity on Day 1 ("talent & depth")seems the appropriate course of action.....if the price is right.

If "the price is wrong bitch" (love that movie), then we can pick now and then take a nap until the 3rd Round.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

No Word From Denver
Or anyone else, for that matter.  So it looks very likely like we'll actually be using the pick at No. 12.

With that in mind, who do you want?  Reply to this comment and give a two or three sentence synopsis as to why you think it's the right pick.  I'll lead it off:

Reggie Nelson (FS, Florida)--as I look at the Texans, the most glaring area of need is the secondary.  So as much as I might like Okoye (which I do) or Branch (which I don't), I'm forcing myself to focus on the secondary.  At No. 12, it really comes down to Leon Hall or Reggie Nelson.  This is definitely a bit higher than Nelson has been projected to go, but he fills a HUGE need at FS.  C.C. Brown is really a SS playing out of position, and he has not consistently shown the coverage skills we so desperately need at FS.  Nelson is the second-best safety prospect in the draft, and his strength is pass coverage.  At the end of the day, the idea of Petey Faggins lining up at the other CB spot is slightly less terrifying to me than another season of C.C. at FS.  That's why I'd go with Reggie Nelson at No. 12.

Thoughts?

I agree
Faggins is not far from being a servicable guy. CC Brown is, at best, horrible. I like the idea of building a strong defense and hoping the OL will shape up with time.
I think people should have to earn a Superman tattoo, by getting shot in the chest first. You know, just to make sure.

Casting a Ballot
Vince Young (QB, Texas)-- The guy is the epitome of a BMF, and just flat out wins football games.  He fills a huge need on offense, and.....oh, crap....it looks like I waited a little too long to click the "Post" button.....seems as though we are already to the '07 Draft....now I have to type something new....

2nd Ballot, No Sarcasm (well, not much)
Due to our unprecedented need in the secondary, I will not be disappointed by selecting Reggie Nelson (or Leon Hall)....However,

Amobi Okoye (DT, Louisville) -- Other than his badass name, he is also a great fit for our style of defense.  I love the fact that this kid is only 19, and it shows that he must have a fair amount of intelligence and strong work ethic to get to this point in life at such an early age.  Also: size, agility, speed, etc., etc.

**I apologize in advance for putting so much statistical data in one post.

re:
Ditto on Okoye.  Nelson after that.  What did Denver offer?  Getting Silver Plume brewing again would be a start.

by bigfatdrunk on Apr 3, 2007 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

An outsiders opinion
I love Okoye, the kid is going to be a great player in the NFL.  I stumped for him for a long time on Niners Nation, but too many guys had it in their heads that he was a guy we should turn into a NT, while I think you negate alot of his value that way.  His speed, agility, and quickness would be valuable as either a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 DT.

That said, trading down to #21 and picking up a DB like Nelson, Merriweather, Houston or Revis or a DT like Justin Harrell could be very beneficial.  Adding that 2nd round pick gives you 4 picks likely to make an impact on your team in the first three rounds.

Just my two cents, if they're even worth that much.

by gatling on Apr 3, 2007 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well Said
I am voting for the trade, even though I would love to have Okoye, because we just have SO MANY holes in our team right now.  More picks on Day 1 is a necessity, and one I hope we set a good example for the franchise to follow at the end of the month.....and so that Tim gets his royalties.

Denver's Latest Offer
BRB Faithful-

Denver has offered us No. 21 (late first) and No. 56 (late second) for our No. 12 on a take-it-or-leave it basis.  Draft value chart says No. 12 is worth 1200; No. 21 and No. 56 are worth 1225 combined.

Make the trade or not?

DO IT
I like our prospects at #21.  I like having a 2nd Round pick again. So I like the deal, and it seems fair to both parties.

And cash in the extra 25 points before leaving the casino....or burn them on the slots, I don't really care.

Jacksonville Wants No. 12
Although their initial offer isn't as good as Denver's, I've countered with a take-it-or-leave it proposal that's probably a bit rich for their blood.  While I'm not optimistic they'll accept, who knows?  The Jags might love someone enough at No. 12 to do it.

Re: Ho
That made me laugh out loud.  I hate trying to better deal everyone in a fake draft, but we're just starved for some prudent decision-making here in H-Town.  We dealt with Charley Casserly for five years.  Please forgive me/us.

I wouldn't be too worried, TSG.  Jacksonville is really gonna have to love someone a whole lot to justify taking my counter.  You're still the leader in the clubhouse.  Or whorehouse.  Whatever it is the kids are saying these days.

That which cannot be replicated
This is probably the 1 area in our mock draft that we cannot replicate.

In reality, all the "voters" are in 1 room together....and the wheeling-&-dealing is handled on an individual basis with each team.  Here, the only way to get votes before making a decision, is to post the information for everyone (including the Ho's) to see.

What is Jax offering?

by Brian Galliford on Apr 3, 2007 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Jax
Thanks, Brian.  Jacksonville originally offered No. 17, No. 79, and No. 229 (7th round) for No. 12.  Seeing as how this is only a three-round mock, I countered with No. 17 and No. 48; that would have obviously been a boon for us.  Not surprisingly, Jacksonville rejected my counter.  I fear that ship may have sailed.

So we're back to where we were an hour ago:  Stand pat at No. 12 or trade it to Denver for No. 21 and No. 56.

Keep refreshing, because I think I've made a decision.
