Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

Liveblogging the first pre-season game

Aight, well, the past 72 hours have been unbelievably stressful and bordering on the Kafka-esque surreal.  It's 18:45CDT, and though I have a couple of beers in me, it's not enough.

To make things more fun, I have homework to do.  If I accidentally post about economic theory or the probes floating around Uranus, please forgive me.

Obviously, this diary will offer nothing in the way of intelligent analysis of the Texans, football in general, or life and the world as we know it.

Disclaimer: Everything I say should be taken with a grain of salt and does not represent the views of BRB or SBN management or any living, sane person.

Star-divide

If you are out there in TV land, please feel free to join.  No forum should ever be devoted to my thoughts alone as it'll quickly switch to hard-core porn and all the things I want to do to the chicks(1) in the corner of the bar.  Ummmmm, if there were chicks in the corner of the bar.

(1) I use the term "chicks" cuz that's what my wife prefers.  So, please don't take offense to the term.  You'll know, without a doubt, when I am being offensive.

first drive by bears
so far, the d giving up lots of yards in the air.  dr being picked on badly.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:14 PM CDT reply actions

got distracted
but gould pulled the fg.

d didn't look half bad.  run game looks expectedly strong.  too distracted to notice how man-child looked specifically, but I did notice that mario was nicely active a couple of plays.  little rush on a couple of the passes, though kalu got through once.  all-around, the pass d got picked on, and we still need a better rush.  anderson and demeco looked good.

just one series, so remember that.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Bless you for doing this...
Game Cast made it sound like Amobi was getting in on some plays.

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

sorry, but...
I just can't tell.  still trying to do classwork.  will pay better attention this drive, at least.  I mean, I only have to pay attention for one quarter, right?

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Slacker
There you go again, putting classwork and "your future" ahead of the team.  You are the Chad Stanley of live bloggers.

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

offense...
Ok, ummmmm, maybe next series?

punter battle - stanley with a crappy punt but a lucky roll.  I'd hope that Smithiak sees that.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:22 PM CDT reply actions

That makes more sense
I just saw the raw yardage and thought there was a typo.

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

bear series 2
quick flat to mckie, and dunta on it like scott on casserly.

ced leveled earl on the way for a big gain.  that was embarrasing.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

2 cont
okoye active, but getting taken out.

jeebus, the pass d is horrendous.  fletcher toasted but a bad pass.

damn, on the punt, jones maybe shoulda broken it.  I can see why tpl was so high on him in *one play*

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

jacoby
That made me downright giddy.

texans 2nd drive
teh schaub the andre dead on for about 15.

green for about 4?  not a bad run.

2 te set.  is that bruener with the catch? (maybe bethel?) interesting set.  with 1 back and 2 te and 2 wr.  dammit, hard to type and watch at the same time.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

DAMNZ!!!
teh schaub misses a wide open walter by about 8" for a sure score.  brown with a chip shot for the fg.

watching the jacoby return again, he runs a little like roy williams but a little less ankle.  yes, I believe I have wood.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

walter play
looked no more complicated than a burroughs-esque bomb.  nothing weird at all.  shoulda been a score.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

quick impression
the team looks faster.  I have no evidence, but they look quick getting to/off the ball.  outside of benson, who looks awesome, the bears don't seem to be showing the same legs.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:37 PM CDT reply actions

Just Caught up
I'll try to add some info here & there.

Viva Okoye is catching some double teams.

Super Mario is playing strong....but ND is playing out of his freaking mind.

Von Hutchins just picked Grossman!!!

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Aug 11, 2007 7:38 PM CDT reply actions

And...
Jacoby's punt return...to quote TPL: "Holy Mother of God"

DeMeco is playing absolutely solid...he's in on every play, as a MLB should.

If Walter could run a bit faster, The Schaub would have a beautiful TD pass.

We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

by Shake on Aug 11, 2007 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions

manchild
not sure if they were dt-ing mc on purpose.  looked more like a zone blocking scheme, but this is a bit beyond my knowledge, as well.  benson, though, was running pretty wildly.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

bears 3rd drive
babin kicks it off with a good tail play to catch peterson on the other side of the line for no gain.

hutchins with a pick off griese!  does that still count?

it already looks like the 2nd teamers are in.  sadly.  i want more.  MORE.  MORE!!!!!

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 11, 2007 7:39 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry
Thought Gross was still in....still a nice pick.
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

3rd and short, and their 2nd team dommed our 2nd team o-line.  just sad.  and, yes, black was out there.

we do need spencer.

Or...
just not Black.

Has Abbate gotten in yet?

Random thought...
how much would we have to slide Andre Ware under the table to get him to mention BRB and DGDB&D on air?

I'm thinking $20.

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 7:47 PM CDT reply actions

helluva pass from griese to hester (yes, hester) in front of fletcher.  good coverage, but still...

good stick by roc on a handoff.

griese just burned bennett for a big gain, and a handoff for the touch.  ayandebejo.  dang, tough spell.

seriously, bennett was scorched.

I'll take over for a little while...
Ayanbedejo "walked" in according to Andre Ware.  Of course, Ware was in the middle of opining on NFL rules, so there wasn't much game description.

Also, he's from Missouri.

Ewww...
JJ, not so much on that one.

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 8:03 PM CDT reply actions

First team stats
Schaub 3/5 for 25
Batman 3 carries for 7 yards
AJ one catch for 15

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

Sadly...
Schaub did MUCH better than Sage.

by MDC on Aug 11, 2007 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I might have spoken too soon
Sage looks to be in a rhythm.  That could have something to do with the greatness of JJ, though.

In the second half, Studdard will start working his way up the depth chart, Van Pelt will look like a 3rd stringer and lundy will go off.

van pelt
from the stories, vp looks horrible.

I'll take the bet on lundy.  gado was...not bad, but not good.  If we have a #3 back on the field, I want someone with a semblance of explosion.

half time thoughts
Most impressed by my new wife, Jacoby.

Jason Babin???  Can I admit that out-loud??  He looked great.

Sage looks solid.  Still a little problem with happy feet and not setting, but as a #2, he is good.

Seriously worried about the secondary.  Bennett will be putting that fire out for a while, and Fletcher was well-toasted as well.  Ced bowling over Earl was...I mean, if we have to rely on Earl for run support, we are in trouble.
