Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

1, 2, 3...53

Here's my best guess:

QB:
Schaub
Rosenfels

FB:
Leach
Pass

RB:
Dayne
Gado
Green
Lundy

TE:
Bruener
Daniels
Putzier

WR:
Davis
A. Johnson
J. Jones
Mathis
Walter

OL:
Studdard
Weary
Pitts
Flanagan
Hodgdon
McKinney
Black
Salaam
Winston

DL:
Babin
Kalu
Weaver
Williams
Tr. Johnson
Maddox
Okoye
Zgonina

LB:
Anderson
Barber
Clark
Diles
Greenwood
Orr
Ryans

DB:
Bennett
Faggins
Fletcher
McCleon
Robinson
Hutchins
Wynn
Brown
Harrison
Simmons

K: Brown

P: Turk

LS: Pittman

OK - There's my Week One roster, barring injuries.  Where am I wrong, BRB?  Notable cuts, under my scenario, include Ty Poole, Jameel Cook, Chad Stanley, Jared Zabransky, Bethel Johnson and Keenan McCardell.

We're pretty similar
I have Abbate making it over Pass (though I think that's a stretch on my part) and Brandon Mitchell making it at safety, with McCleon missing the party (also a stretch).

Is it too late to get Black off the roster?  BFD plays LT better than he does.

Tell me again how Jacoby was a "reach" in the third round.

well
I agree with Abbate, for sentimental reasons I guess, but I think Black is coming around and will make it.  I think a lot of our team is just now coming around, which is a good thing. Let's all come around at the same time..and kick some arse, which doesn't sound as bad as ass.

hope you're right
the whole "turnstile" commentary from the Chiefs fans really turned me off toward Black, so I can say that I am not as optimistic as 1Texan.  I do think we need to keep Abbate and Mitchell, at least.  We know what the other guys can do, and it ain't much.

Scott Jackson?
I'm getting the impression that the staff is looking for Scott Jackson to give them a reason to keep him and cut Turnsti... uh, I mean Black.

Jackson
All I know is the one game (Arizona) where Kubiak made it a point to get Jackson better reps, Scott damn near got the QB killed.  I'd feel better signing Tito Jackson.
Is it too early to hook Jacoby Jones up with Darcy Maeda?

by MDC on Aug 29, 2007 8:17 AM CDT up reply actions

ahhh
I missed that. We certainly don't want any Texan QBs killed. Not this season.

Abbate
I totally agree that a strong argument can be made for keeping him on the 53 man roster.  I'm just not sure I can see it happening with Pass in camp as well.  I'm not sure what position you would drop a player for to keep a 3rd FB (and a rookie at that).  That's why I've got Abbate penciled in on the practice squad rather than the 53 man roster.

Cook stays?
We've seen now that Pass is gone, and I agree that the injury may well mean Abbate goes to the practice squad rather than the 53-roster. I fear this would indicate that the staff is gonna make Cook commit another few mistakes before pulling Abbate back from the practice squad to replace him.

Re: Cook
Knave, I really hope you're wrong.  But I think you're probably right.  The Texans can get away with sending Abbate to the practice squad, so why not send him there to percolate while waiting for Jameel to play himself out of contention?  Except that, you know, Cook's salary is about ten times what Abbate would make.

Out with Cook.  In with Abbate, injury be damned!

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Ton of DBs
And that's not a bad thing.  With regard to Abbate, I think he had this team made until he got hurt.  Unfortunately, I believe he's bound for the practice squad now.

RE: practice squad
Can someone provide the details for how many players can be on the practice squad & for how many years?
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

Re: practice squad
Relevant portion of CBA

On Sunday, September 2, 2007, the day after the final pre-season cutdowns, each club may establish a Practice Squad of no more than eight (8) players who are free agents and who do not have more than nine games on an Active list in a previous season.

$4700 per week - not bad work, if you can get it.  And any Practice Squad man can be signed to another team's Active/Inactive list at any time.

Also
I believe you can't have previously been on the practice squad, or that there are least term limits for that sort of thing.
Is it too early to hook Jacoby Jones up with Darcy Maeda?

RE: Term Limit
I heard something around 2-3 years....thus, BVP is no longer with us.

re: Years
Section 4. Eligibility:
(a) The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more
than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL
experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games
during their only Accrued Season(s). An otherwise eligible player may be a practice squad player for a third
season only if the Club by which he is employed that season has at least 53 players on its Active/Inactive List
during the entire period of his employment.
