gosder cherilus ot
desean jackson wr

i doubt we go desean, even though it would be really fun with AJ, davis, walter and desean, i dont see it

since we just hired gibbs and acquired his zone blocking expertise i think the colossal gosder cherilus (6-7, 319) is a long shot.

we have 5 rbs like you pointed out in an earlier post, and not many people here seem to think that well draft a rb.  Rick smith, kubes, and gibbs all started working in Denver around the same time and ended their tenures in `06, `06, and `01 respectively. and in the broncos drafts of '94-'05 they drafted zero rbs in the first round, one in the second, and two in the third.  So im also going to go with no running back with the number 18 pick.

Personally, I would trade sage, travis, and our 1st and 3rd round picks to Miami and pick up Dorsey.  Crisis averted.

If we take Desean Jackson...
I'm burning the practice bubble to the ground.

Re: Drafting
I agree with every damn thing you wrote, particularly about the potential trade.  Hell, if Parcells would take Tr. Johnson off our hands, I'd even offer to throw in a handful of "retro" Carr, D. Davis, and J. Mathis (God, I hope) jerseys.

And great point about the zone blocking scheme.  I've been pretty strong in my belief that we'll got LT at No. 18, but Gibbs' hire changes everything.  Zone blocking historically requires lighter, quicker personnel; I'm not sure if that would affect our desire to take a LT at No. 18.  I'm beginning to think that we're going DB (unless someone falls in our lap, a la Amobi last year) in the first round.  And I'd be happy as a pig in fecal matter if we did that.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Another One
Arm Chair GM is another summary site, showing different mock draft links and when they were last updated.
We can be critical of the draft picks, but in the end we always support the new Texan.

DB
I'm all in with the DB.

This site shows the only OL drafted 1st during the Kubiak years at Denver:

http://nflhistory.net/shared/draft1.asp?Team=13&Year=2003

Peruse the other years and note the early emphasis on defense.

Great Find, Outlaw
With that history in mind, you'd definitely have to figure that Smithiak is leaning heavily toward going defense, and considering the gaping holes in our secondary...it pretty much has to be DB.

The question becomes, then:  Who?  Kenny Phillips?  Talib?  Given Dunta's uncertain health and ability to contribute at CB next year, it makes sense to me that we'd go CB over S.

Man...
if I'd have read these comments, I'd have saved myself some digging for Gibbs' draft record. Live and learn.

I think I am still a little too optimistic about Dunta, so I am leaning S over CB. Of course, I would actually prefer a nose tackle, but that might cause riots and lynch mobs and the like.

If we trade down
and Gholston or Campbell is there, then I would love that.  I know that surel isn't popular amongst the other fans, but we need another pass rusher.  I admit that it would be a lot for the salary cap, but I can surely dream.

Agree and disagree
I agree that we need to upgrade over Anthony Weaver. However I think the more pressing need on that line is a big, space-eating DT who would free up Mario and Amobi simultaneously.

One guy I am beginning to covet? Frank Okam.

Of the two you mentioned, however, I prefer Campbell over Gholston for at least three reasons. 1. I hate OSU. 2. Campbell has a much cooler last name. 3. Gholston is a little too small (6-4, 255) for my taste whereas Campbell (6-8, 280) is freakish.

I totally agree
about needing a space-eater in the middle, but are there really any DT's that are first round worthy that are NT?  I Okam big enough to handle that?  You are right though, b/c if we do not get a space eater, not only will Amobi and Mario suffer, but DeMeco will get killed.

by Triple347 on Jan 12, 2008 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Okam
is the only one I've seen so far that could possibly be worth a first. And at 6-4, 325, he's not exactly Sam Adams.

There are always guys like Terrance Taylor (Michigan) and Pat Sims (Auburn) and Fili Moala (USC).  (I doubt Moala is there at 18.)

New RB on the radar
Steve Slaton out of West Va is declaring early.  Looking at this year's class, I think it's all but garunteed we wait until the 3rd round.
Some teams play games on Sunday...ours goes to War. Go Texans!!!

yep
It's just too bad this isn't the year of the DB instead.

Another one to consider...
is Tatum Bell.  Home run ability, and he knows the system.  AND Kubiak supposedly likes him.

Jones and McFadden...
...making it official today.

Wow, Arkansas football will suck as bad as the rest of the state.

so I am not cool enough on my own to save the state?

RB answer and draft
Anyone for UFA Michael Turner this year? Would solve a lot of problems and would be a great fit....enables us to go DB/OT in 1st round and 3rd rounds w/o worrying about a RB...looking at possible picks for 1st round:

Aquib Talib
Mike Jenkins
Kenny Phillips
Ryan Clady
Gosder Childers (however its spelled)
Jeff Otah (could shoot up draft boards)
Sam Baker

3rd Round:

Jack Ikegwanu (cb, wisco)
Kirk Barton, OT, Ohio St.

Any other suggestions?

by the way i would still love jacob hester as a fb/hybrid pick in rd 3 or 4

by curtisdisco on Jan 14, 2008 3:37 PM CST reply actions

Turner
isn't going anywhere for less than $6MM/per.  He's out of our price range by almost double, I'd imagine.

I hate Aqib Talib, but have a mancrush on Kenny Phillips.

by MDC on Jan 14, 2008 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

also...
If Turner does anything against the Pats, it'll be the Dwight Smith effect and the price tag could go even higher.
