Ask BigBlueShoe, Colts blogger (Week 5)

Hiya Texans fan. Before you start throwing tomatoes and shotgun pellets at me, let me state that I am not here to rub into your faces the current 0-3 plight of the Texans. As Tim will attest to, I think the Texans are better than there 0-3 record. Crappy luck and inconsistent play have started their season with a dud. But look at it this way, my beloved Colts are about in the same boat with you. If not for some last minute heroics by Peyton Manning and Adam Vinatieri, Indy would be joining you this week at 0-3. And while I think the Titans certainly deserve their 4-0 start, the fact is their roster is not much different than your roster in terms of talent.

There is a very fine line between winning and losing. Very fine.

So, I'm here to field your questions about the Colts and your team's upcoming match-up with them. Tim is doing something similar with Colts fans over at Stampede Blue.  Also, those of you fans still picking up the pieces after Hurricane Ike, know we Hoosiers have you in our thoughts and prayers. If you can suggest any charities or donation houses I can plug at Stampede Blue, I'm hpapy to do so.

Ask away.

So...

1) What’s the deal with Marvin Harrison?

2) What exactly is the injury situation like right now? I know Clark and Saturday are back, but Sanders is out. Anything else we need to know?

by BigTexBD on Oct 1, 2008 8:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Answer

1) He’s fine. Healthy. Running good routes and looks like the Marvin of 2-3 years ago. If you are wondering why his WR numbers aren’t all-world, the Colts o-line was a patchwork mess for 3 weeks and the QB is still recovering from surgery.

2) The o-line is getting healthy, sans Ryan Lilja who is on the PUP. Dallas Clark is practicing and will play. DT Daniel Muir also practiced Wednesday and will play. So, other than Sanders, Lilja, and SAM backer Tyjuan Hagler, the Colts are finally getting healthy.

Manning's knee

Not that he was ever “mobile” but how’s his knee holding up?
does he look sluggish?

Putting off studying so I'll take a few

He’s looked a bit uncomfortable in the pocket, but has moved fine. I think the discomfort was the patchwork OL in front of him not the knee under him like some analysts have said.

Also

Peyton has had to fight to keep loose in games. It is a bye product after the surgery, but it forces him to stretch and ride a bike on the sidelines.

Secondary

Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels had big games last week. How do you see the matchups shaping up with those guys in the secondary?

It's a zone scheme so it's not specific players

if they are targeting someone in the back 7 it’ll be the OLBs. Clint Sessions still has less than half a season of starts under his belt and despite being a converted safety Freddie Keiaho still has some trouble in coverage. They are both very good cover OLBs, but Tampa-2 LBs are asked to do a ton in coverage. They might go at Melvin Bullit, Bob Sanders replacement, but the Colts scheme really discourages deep passing.

A good receiving TE like Daniels usually works over a cover-2 because of the hole between the deep safeties, but the Tampa-2 drops the MLB into that zone and Colts MLB is one of the best coverage LBs in the league.

Whoever is matched up on Tim Jennings in the nickel package (it’ll be Johnson or the #2 WR because they slide Marlin Jackson inside to the slot because he’s the most physical CB by far (and the slowest) will rack up some 1st down conversions. For some reason the fastest CB on the team gives up massive cushions. Matt Jones was killing Jennings on comeback routes for first downs last game.

Slaton

How is the Colts d-line going to handle true zone blocking? We seem to have gotten better at it with every game and I wonder how it’s going to work against the Colts. Anything you remember about past performances against the Broncos?

The Colts have owned the Broncos

but it was mostly because of the other matchup. Colts O killing the Broncos D, Reggie Wayne in particular.

Since Dungy arrived in 2002 and installed the current defense the Colts are 5-1 against the Broncos (5-2 with a week 17 game where they rested starters then beat the Broncos by 25 the next week in the wild card round)

In all six of those games against the Colts starters the Broncos ran well though. They ran the ball often (lowest total attempts was 20, highest was 56) and were effective (lowest YPC was 4, highest was 6.3)

So the great zone blocking run game of the Broncos had plenty of success against the Colts D, but the team lost because they could never stop the Colts O (they Colts broke 40 points twice, 30 twice more, won in overtime with 23 and lost the only game they didn’t score 20).

So basically we just have to hold the Colts to under 20 points and we’ll win. Sure. No problem there.

no problem here either

so far the Texans are the 5th worst defense Football Outsiders has ever recorded through the first 4 weeks.

Lions actually

Rams are second.

Lions are also the 4th worst overall, Rams 7th after 4 weeks.

Here’s the link. The worst ever rankings are towards the bottom. Their stats go back to 1995, the last year they have gotten play-by-play data for.

Freeney

How is he looking these days? Back to his old self?

Also, what adjustments is the team making to make up for the significant loss of Sanders?

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 2, 2008 12:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Freeney looks fine

2 sacks and a forced fumble in two games. They are rotating him out more often, but he’s been very effective.

Against the Jags they didn’t make any obvious changes, they don’t change up coverages or alignments much normally, just play your zone and do it very well. They do switch to a cover-3 with Sanders in the box when they are getting run on. They ran the same thing against the Jags with Sanders’ backup, Melvin Bullit.

I was watching on my laptop and didn’t always have a feed, you see anything different BBS?

Cover 3

They switched to Cover 3 sometimes with Melvin, but (in all honesty) the Colts have not run much Cover 2. They’d had to either keep a safety in the box or blitz in order to shore up the run defense, and that is NOT the Colts comfort zone. This has forced man-to-man coverage from the CBs, which is not their strength. With players like Daniel Muir and Lajuan Ramsey getting comfortable in the system, the Colts will shift back to more Cover 2, and thus better defense. We may see that this Sunday against Houston. Maybe.

sorry for picking off your questions

Answering questions about the Colts is more fun than studying for a Multivariable Calculus (wish I was kidding) test

Mutivariable Calculus

I think I might be taking that in the near future. My major is in electrical engineering.

From the voice of experience...

You will be taking more Calculus and Calculus-based courses than you can even imagine. But it’s all worth it in the end.

So you're saying that now I have to think of some witty Sig that will be applicable across all the SBN sites? Go TexanHornStros!

Ive only taken one calculus course and that was in High School

I love mathematics and that is one of the reasons I selected to go into the field of engineering. not only that but I love technology. so far im enjoying it

What is this Math balogna?

Numbers bigger than 50 make my head hurt.

But on with the questions. Is this Jeff Saturday’s first game back? If so, what exactly happened to get him injured and how might that affect (effect?) the Colts?

Is this Clark’s first game back? I know he took a brutal hit (don’t ask me which game) but I was under the assumption that the injury was pretty bad and might have sidelined him for longer than this.

What scares you guys most about the Texans offense? How has Ugoh looked (reading over 1 colts messageboard some people are upset that he’s not Tarik Glenn which seems retarded).

by b0ng on Oct 4, 2008 10:57 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

my bad I started the math BS

Saturday was back two weeks ago against the Jags and (not) coincidentally the Colts running game returned at the same time. Saturday being back and appearing totally fine is big because it means Peyton doesn’t have to make the line calls in addition to calling and adjusting the play and Saturday is one of the elite centers in the league so he’s pretty useful after the snap too. See his demolishing of 350lb Vince Wilfork in the AFC Championship game (replays at 1:22 give a great view)

Clark had a knee injury in the Opener (Chicago game) that kept him out of the Colts second game, but he was back for week 3, where he took the nasty hit. It looked bad but his concussion testing game up clean and he’s had two weeks to recover thanks to the bye. He’s not even on the injury report. You may have been thinking of Saturday’s injury that was suppose to have him out 4-6 weeks without surgery or 6-8 with it (he didn’t have surgery, returned to practice after 3 weeks, played after 4).

The Texans offense scares me in that if the DTs and LBs don’t step up the Texans are capable of running on them. Win teams can run on the Colts it levels the playing field by limiting the Colts strength (Peyton and the O) and avoiding what the D is designed to do (stop the pass and pressure the QB).

Ugoh has all the talent, but he has lapses. He was a better run blocker than Tarik Glenn from day one (with is a complement to Ugoh not a knock on Glenn who was good but not great run blocking). Glenn was a phenomenal pass protector. Ugoh is progressing, he doesn’t get dominated and consistently beat, but he’ll just blow once every game or two.
