Open Game Day Thread--Detroit v. Houston

Detroit Lions at Houston Texans, Oct 19, 2008 3:05 PM CDT

If things go according to plan, your Houston Texans will be a mere two (2) games under .500 this evening. Of course, we've seen very little go according to plan this season. Yet I am optimistic today, if for no other reason than the emotional lift a certain bad mofo will provide with his return.

As always, leave your pre-game, in-game, and post-game ranting and raving in the Comments below. A second game day thread will open on the main page at 4:30 p.m. CDT, so move the action there at the appropriate time. GO TEXANS!

Late start

Now I’m just bored. Cincinnati v. Pittsburgh isn’t exactly a beauty to watch. Come oooonn…..

by DisplacedTexan on Oct 19, 2008 1:39 PM CDT reply actions

So I saved myself the trouble

…and looked up the Spurs score. Sorry, amigo.

My team won yesterday — I’m hoping to go 2 for 2 on the weekend.

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 19, 2008 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Also

Dallas is taking it up the poop chute. Awesome.

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 19, 2008 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Awesome

doesn’t even come close to describing how good the Cowtoys losing huge to the Lambs makes me feel. Wade Phillips (doesn’t he look like a grown-up Bam-Bam from the Flintstones?) is so overrated.

"...and if I claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that I don't know". SL

by Southern Lion on Oct 19, 2008 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

True

But I have a hard time hating on the guy, considering how he has holy bloodlines and all.

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 19, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude.

The score doesn’t even do the game justice. We lost two players to red cards, and one to the hospital.

I honestly didn’t think the season could get any worse.

Also – what’s up with the Dutch league table? Feyenoord at 4pts? Some whacky team at the top I’ve never heard of? I plan on hitting up an Ajax game in the next few months (being in Leiden and all).

by DisplacedTexan on Oct 19, 2008 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow

That sucks. I’m telling you, you should have kept Martin Jol.

And 010 being at the bottom of the table is nothing more than a case of poetic justice. Like when the Cowboys finish dead last. It’s awesome.

FWIW my mom was born in Leiden and both my parents studied there. It’s a nice place.

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 19, 2008 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Leiden

So I’m assuming you got Ajax from your pops? Feyenoord seems to be the popular team around here.

It’s a great town – I really like it. Close enough to Amsterdam and the Hague that I can get my fill of the city if I want. But still plenty to do here in town. Good school to boot.

by DisplacedTexan on Oct 19, 2008 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually

My dad is from the Hague. The story of how I got into Ajax is a long one, and I don’t think anyone here wants to hear it. I’m worried I’ll get banned if I keep talking roundball.

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 19, 2008 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

We should keep our love of a pansy, greasy-haired, dive-happy sport filled with dirty foreigners under wraps. (Though Matt appears to have a West Ham logo on gchat – which begs the question… West Ham? Really Matt?)

And the pounding the Cowgirls are taking… is like a beautiful chorus of angels.

by DisplacedTexan on Oct 19, 2008 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I got crazy nerves right now...

It feels like the whole season is hanging in the balance.

It'll probably feel like that all season

At least until we get to 11 wins. After that, a loss won’t feel so bad.

by Tailgate Andy on Oct 19, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

No need to worry.

Victory Weekend 2.0 is in full swing. Did you SEE the ass-pounding that UT administered? My friends, there is a new season ahead of us.

by DisplacedTexan on Oct 19, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to mention the Cowgirls

Wasn’t St. Louis supposed to be bad this year?

by Tailgate Andy on Oct 19, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Imagine

If you could bottle the tears of Cowgirls and Sooner fans? I’d drink it every day.

Two of the three criteria have been met for sure

UT win
Dallas loss
Just need a win from the home team and we’ll be all good.

Random

I don’t have much room to speak, being a Spurs fan. But West Ham? Why?

by DisplacedTexan on Oct 19, 2008 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Totally random

I wanted to see a Premier League game while in England on my honeymoon, West Ham was in town and playing the weekend we were in London, and the fans cracked me up singing “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” during intros. I was hooked.

Also, I just figured out who you are. I am slow.

For all of you without reception,

be glad that you didn’t witness that last play. Faggins let his man go deep, and the only thing that saved it from being a huge play was French Toast catching up to an underthrown ball and not getting called for pass interference.

if u had any clue about rugby u would no that.
the 2nd string players get played in most celtic league games.
the h cup is the most importnt thing and we are champions!

Yo dude

Take it easy. We’re all friends here.

Of course the Celtic League matters — if you don’t finish high enough you can’t play in the Heineken Cup, right?

I’ve been to international rugby matches, etc.

And I know that Munster beat the All-blacks in the seventies. So did Lanelli and Swansea (before regionalization). Swansea beat Australia a couple of years ago.

If you are gonna talk about a sport know something about it.

by tehGrindCrusher on Oct 19, 2008 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

wrong!

Here in ireland u only had to finish higher than one other province to qualify for europe and seein as connaght and ulster are shit we could put out our 2nd string.

good for u u’ve been to matches! ive played for munster at thomand park under 18 and 20’s before my injury so i think i know what i am talkin about. uve probably never played rugby.

We only say we’re better than NZ for a joke its a common saying.

FWIW I’ve never heard anyone say that the Celtic League doesn’t matter — and you have to acknowledge that position in the league is relevant, even if Munster and Leinster are head and shoulders better than the other Irish regions.

But I know a fair bit about rugby, even if I didn’t play at a very high level.
