I'm happy. I'm thrilled.
But they need to win next week. They need to win a game on the road that hardly anyone is going to expect them to win.
I think we’ve got a real shot. It’s gonna be all about stopping the run, because the Vikes don’t exactly have a scary passing attack.

At one point,
David Carr completed 22 of his passes in a row. If you start at an arbitrary point, we look pretty good.
The truth is that the Texans have looked (as a team) pretty awful all season. This was the first time we could truly say they were all awesome in one game. And it came against a team that could possibly go 0-16 this season. Nobody who was paying attention since Week 1 should be happy with where the Texans are right now.
With that said, the Texans should be 5-2. Had somebody called a TO before that fake punt at Jacksonville, and if Rosenfels hadn’t completely screwed the pooch, or if Richard Smith understood how to run a defense in either of those games, we’d be #2 in the division.
That’s not to say that everything is a disaster. Things are going well. If the Texans play well for the next eight weeks, they have a good shot at getting their first winning season (given that that would be Houston’s first winning season since the 1993 Oilers, I’d be thrilled). If they play hard and get a little lucky, they’ll certainly make the playoffs. The Texans are, for the first time, really competitive. If the coaches make good decisions, this team can beat anybody. But our coaches’ decisions are not always good ones, and that’s an issue that has got to be addressed by Bob McNair and Kubiak.

...and to that I say again -
As easily as we could have won against JAX or IND – we could have lost to Miami.
Also, the fake punt was in the first half! The complexion of the game would have been different, you can’t just take those points off the board and assume they wouldn’t have made them up elsewhere. The reason we lost against JAX is because our end-of-game defense SUCKED ASS. Not because we lost the overtime toss, and not because of the team going brain-dead on the fake punt.
Now, the Indy game? Damn right we should have won that game – but the defense STILL had a chance to make a stop.
So, this whole business about how we should be 5-2 I think is totally bogus. At best, 4-3… but good teams make their own breaks. The team doesn’t know HOW to win close games right now, and they certainly aren’t a good road team, and they’ve got NOTHING to show for their games against good teams.
We’re 3-4, and we’re a 3-4 team.

So back at the beginning of the year
looking at our first 7 games, would you have taken 3-4?
If our team has short memories, and I would argue that they do, I say we’re in pretty good shape. We need to remember the last three weeks, and forget the weeks 3 and 4 disasters.
Looking forward, obviously every week matters, but we absolutely have to beat Indy and Jax. 2-4 in the division, at worst, giving each of them another loss, letting the rest of the league beat each other up, and I think our schedule is weak enough to pull this year out.
I said at the beginning of the year, and I think its readily apparent right now, we are one of the better middle-echelon teams, no more no less. We can beat up the lower echelon teams, we can compete, sometimes favorably with the middle teams, but we don’t belong on the field with the elite teams. So we may need a little luck, but it can be done.
This weekend we have another middle echelon team, so can we win on the road?
Healthy and Turnover free 2008-09, and we win 11!

Another important thing
would be to fire Richard Smith.

Agreed, right now we clearly are not among the worst teams, but do not belong with the elite either
but, we are improving on both sides of the ball. Obviously the offense is the strength of the team, but if Dunta Daunte can make it back to full strength soon, coupled with the inspiring safety play we saw yesterday from Nick Ferguson and Eugene Wilson, our defense can make big strides in the right direction. We are not recording an eye catching number of sacks, but the D Line is putting better pressure on the QB which is the key to pass defense. I was glad to see our top 4 pass rushers Mario-Amobi-Bulman-Cochran on the field at the same time on many downs yesterday. Thank you Richard Smith. Amobi was consistently getting a disruptive push up the middle, and Mario was being Mario; spending the afternoon in the opponent’s backfield. Now we face some real tough running teams. Are we up to the challenge? I can’t wait to find out.
The passing game was full of superlatives, truly a thing of beauty. Schaub and AJ are at that level that few ever attain. The unreal stats those two have racked up for the last 4 games are among the best in NFL history; Really. Add in Daniels, Walter, the other Dre and Anderson and you have a passing machine. The running game is still a work in progress, but showing real signs of progress. Just enough to keep the opposition from focusing solely on Schaub.
These next 2 games, away and at home against middle echelon teams (Vikes and Ravens) provide the Texans with the opportunity to make a statement. Win both and we are for real. At 5-4, playoff talk would no longer be just wishful thinking. I see 9-7 or maybe even 8-8 making the 2nd wildcard in the AFC this year.
GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!!

they cover! woo hoo!
The Texans cover… hells yeah!!
that was a fun beatdown to watch.
Now we gotta learn how to stop the run or the Minnesota/Baltimore games could get u-g-l-y.
