A bookend back for Steven Slaton..
We have been talking about a bookend back for Steve Slaton. Someone who is a big back to take the hits, hammer the goal line, and still have the ability to tear off the 10 and 15 yard runs, without having to spend high picks on him (which better go to defense).
I propose that man can be Shonn Greene.
5'11", 235lbs, and 23 years of age, the running back from University of Iowa has been an absolute monster this year, running for 1,729 yards and 17 touchdowns, on a 6.2 yards a carry average. He averages 144 yards a game, and he runs physical. From all accounts, he is humble, quiet, and out works everyone else.
He has only had one injury, during the 2006 season, where he was out for 3 games. The nature of it I couldnt find.
However, there is some mystery behind Shonn Greene. He missed the entire 2007 season for undisclosed reasons. Some suspect it was grades, but Greene and his family asked for it to not be released to the media.
Shonn Greene just won the Best RB in College Football award, but I've been thinking about this for a while, and arguing between Rashad Jennings from Liberty, and Shonn Greene.
He could probably be had in late 2nd/ early 3rd depending on whats available, and he appears to be one of the best "big backs" available in the draft.

He bowls over safties, breaks alot of tackles, follows his blocks, and has some sneaky speed for a guy his size (4.47). Someone to consider when the draft rolls around in 2009.

1st round backs
I don’t think this team is going to spend a first rounder on a back when we have this Steve Slaton. I think Shonn Greene is definitely going to be one of the backs selected on the 1st day and really, I think our first day should be spent all on defense (as in both picks).

Re: First Round
That was the first thing I thought when I read this post. He’s a first-round pick in all likelihood, and I can’t see Smithiak going RB in Round One (or even Two or Three) when there are so many bigger needs.
I do like Greene, though. He’s going to be a good one.

Does anybody think that
there’s a chance Jorvorskie Lane could make it through training camp in Houston?
Assuming that he gets invited to the combine, and depending on how he well he does, J. Lane is either going to get drafted in one of the late rounds, or not at all.
If he goes undrafted, I’d love to see him play for the Texans. More specifically, I’d like to see what he could do with an NFL strength and conditioning coach to try and keep him from being too fluffy. At A&M, especially his junior year when he was playing halfback, he showed a great nose for the endzone, and was a great short yardage back.
Based on his size (listed at 6’0" and around 275) and speed (allegedly runs a 4.65), his good receiving skills and his ability to deliver big hits in the running game I thought J. Lane would make an amazing fullback. Mike Sherman seemed to think the same thing and Lane did not respond well.
Lane didn’t have breakaway speed in college, so he’s going to look even slower in the NFL (if he even makes it). I still think that if he can keep his weight under control, he’d be great at getting 2 or 3 yards at a time and would be a great compliment to Stevie Wonder.
Thoughts?

Drafting him would be a waste...
…of a draft pick.
If he’s still a fat useless slob when it comes time to sign UDFAs, then I don’t see the point. If he takes it upon himself to bust ass and get in shape for the draft but doesn’t get drafted – I see no reason to take a chance on him as a UDFA… though if that happens, someone will probably snatch him up in the 7th round.
It speaks to the success of Smithiak’s drafts that I don’t even want to waste a 7th round pick on a guy with potential like that. I mean, Zac freaking Diles was a 7th rounder!

Oops: “I see no reason to take a chance on him as a UDFA” should read “I see no reason NOT to take a chance on him as a UDFA”

Not when you can’t fit the ties around the player’s gigantic fat ass.
But yes – if he realizes he can’t translate into the NFL like that, he could make something of himself… but I still think there will be much better choices in free agency or with late draft picks. (or even UDFAs)

Right...
I’m just saying – as many Ex-Broncos as we’ve brought in, I can see Kubiak giving an Aggie alumnus a shot. Would he pan out ? Probably not – considering he’s built like Amobi Okoye.

Re: Lane
Agreed with those who say no way on drafting him, but are open to giving him a shot as an UFA. He’s the right size to be a short yardage back for sure.

Different evaluations..
A couple of draft websites have been placing Shonn Greene as the 10th or 11th back in the draft, behind Chris Wells, Moreno, LeSean McCoy, Demarco Murray, Ringer, Spiller, James Davis, and some others, dropping him to the 3rd-4th round in terms of backs. Some of the knocks on him is the “one hit wonder” status due to his single full season under his belt. His new famed award status might bring some new light, but I doubt NFL talent scouts will be affected by that. He also doesn’t have the measurables in terms of raw speed or strength, which should let him fall a bit as well.

Re: Evaluations
Wow…I had no idea Greene’s early evaluations were so unkind. While I think there are still several positions that should require attention before RB in the draft, it’d be nuts not to at least consider a guy of Greene’s talent if he was sitting there for you in the fourth round.
