Raiders 27, Texans 16

Abominable. Every coach and player should be absolutely ashamed of himself right now. Vent in whatever manner you deem fit.

I'll start: I believe we just witnessed the most embarrassing game of Gary Kubiak's tenure. Discuss.

I kinda...

felt like they would blow this game. In my preseason prediction, I actually pick them to lose.
Kubiak did not have them prepared, I expect them to bounce back next week and go 8-8, but after an 0-4 start, I bet anybody here would’ve taken that.

They will be better next season…. I know, we always say that shit, but DaMMMnit they still my team.

Happy Christmas to all of you!

GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!

Woah overreact much?

We will win the last one and we’ll get the winning season next year.

i just vomited

andre/schaub really let me down in my fantasy championship game. i’m the most optimistic Texans fan of all-time, but right now i need a hug. losing to the raiders is embarassing, plain and simple.

Dre didn't let you down

Schaub let you down. There were multiple moments where Dre was open and Schaub didn’t throw it to him.

Meat? They're made out of Meat? Meat.

If there is any bright side to this

…let’s hope that this was the final nail in the coffin for Richard Smith.

normally i have at least one positive thing to say

but not this game. the texans were absolutely atrocious in every phase of the game. terrible offense, terrible defense, terrible special teams, and most of all terrible coaching – a passing play on third and inches in the red zone, and then another passing play on fourth and inches? what the fuck, kubes.

by cubic on Dec 21, 2008 8:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Three plays, other than the ones previously mentioned, really stood out to me..

First, the onside kick. We didn’t even think, didn’t possibly consider the fact, that a desperate, hungry Raiders team with a coach who knows he isn’t going to be there for a while, while pressing the advantage of momentum would POSSIBLY kick an onside kick. I don’t have the replay, but I believe a couple guys on the front line were already turned and running after the ball was kicked. We just looked unprepared.

Second, on a third and twelve we threw an Owen Daniels slip screen to the right. I dont play/coach professional football for a living, but it looked to me before the snap they had a strong side to the right and Gibril Wilson sitting right over where the screen was supposed to develop. Perhaps you take the initiative, Schaub, to not allow your coaches ultra conservative play calling to maul another drive, and audible to something else. Like Kevin Walter or Andre Johnson across the middle, or Daniels up the seam.

Lastly, and most obviously, the punt return for a touchdown. As soon as Higgins caught it, blocking developed on the screen and I uttered a trembling whisper, “Oh no, please dont.” Which rapidly turned to, “Motherfucker”.

From a general sense of things, we made Russell, another supposed Al Davis bust pick, look like a freaking Hall of Famer. He had time, made crisp passes, threw the deep ball well, and generally dismembered us with creepy organ thief surgical precision. Why? Because Jamarcus Russell had time and NO pressure. Occasionally Mario would take the edge, but he would get run by or collapsed in, and with no other pressure, Russell would either step up or back and be fine.

The offensive play calling was ridiculous. That’s all I have to say about that.

Schaub, Schaub, Schaub…. I know you have heard of that Asomugha guy, and hes a really good corner and all, but that shouldn’t wrack you with paralytic fear and only allow THE BEST RECEIVER IN THE NFL 2 catches.

Well, Houston Texans, that a way to follow up the biggest win in your history with….. that.

onside kick

agreed.

Our special teams has been exposed all year. The two or three dudes we put on the 40 shouldn’t MOVE until the ball is kicked deep. Thats just discipline.

Jax did it to us last year, and I watch the same thing happen on just about every kick. I see how often an onside kick will work against us.

Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.

Special Teams

Our special teams seem to get worse every year. Why isn’t Marciano on the hot seat? We could use an upgrade there just as much as the defense.

I’d be happy to never see Jacoby back on a punt return again. The risks and fubars definitely outwiegh the rewards, week after week after week.

Re: Marciano

I wondered that aloud repeatedly yesterday. Special teams has waffled between awful and mediocre all year, yet you never hear word one about Marciano being an issue. I’ll readily admit that he’s done yeoman work in years past and thus deserves some benefit of the doubt, but the complete lack of criticism is baffling. He seems to be a sacred cow, and I don’t know why a team like the Texans has any sacred cows.

Totally with you on Jacoby. It’s gotten to the point that I NEVER have a good feeling about him being able to hold on to the ball.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Dec 22, 2008 12:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm ready to see the team cut Jacoby.

There’s too much downside to go along with the occasional moment of genius, and he doesn’t seem to be learning from his mistakes.

Jacoby

I thought he’d be out for the year with another separated shoulder after he hobbled off the field after that fumble, practically dragging his arm behind him (but alas he came back). If he sucks healthy, I sure as hell wouldn’t put him in with a bum shoulder.

Can someone educate me as to why Andre Davis doesn’t do punt returns? I there that much difference in skill set that he wouldn’t be a good fit, or is it as simple as minimizing risk of injury? There must be sound logic behind this, as it seems most teams have different players for each return team.

Third and inches.

You have Steve Slaton in the backfield.

Run. The. Fuck. ing. Ball.

That is all I have to say about this game, as I believe it epitomizes everything.

by DisplacedTexan on Dec 21, 2008 10:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I was actually happy

when the passed on THIRD down. Cuz I knew we were gonna go for it on 4th.

Then, the 4th down call… worst. call. ever.

Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.

Bad loss

I just wish I could blame the defense. More importantly, I wish the defensive play calling would have been so bad, that that alone was the entire reason we lost.

Nope. That can only be said about the offense today.

Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.

by texanphil on Dec 21, 2008 10:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The offensive play-calling was bad.

But what does it say about your team when you lose the battle at the line of scrimmage to the Raiders? Aside from gimmicky screen passes, we didn’t have one play the entire day where we really lined up and beat them in the trenches. On either side of the ball.

Lucky me

I get the CBS feed through Austin and they gave us the Titans vs Ravens instead.

Ruined My Week

So I was so angry I stopped watching and abruptly left my girlfriend’s apartment. She wasn’t happy. I then made sure to try to drink myself into oblivion. Now Monday morning feels like hell. Thanks Texans. Thanks for reminding all of us that the most we’ll ever be is mediocre. Thanks for blowing your annual “gimme” game. Thanks for saying all the politically correct things like “Well, we still have two more games to play.” and “We can’t look past Oakland, they’re a hungry team with a lot of good players.”, yet not meaning any of it. This team makes me sick.

by Leein3D on Dec 22, 2008 9:55 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Step back from the ledge

No need to jump. What was it that made you think we were anything more than mediocre? I meah, sure, there’s potential, but we’re still too young and thin in talent to be thought of as anything other than what our record indicates we are. Yesterday was just a reminder that we’d been getting pretty lucky out there in recent weeks.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

Very true

We did dodge a bunch of bullets against Cleveland, Green Bay and Tennessee. We gave each of those teams a bunch of opportunities to beat us. This time, our opponents actually took advantage of our charity.

I think

it was Kubiak’s cap he was wearing yesterday. i don’t seem to ever remember him wearing a baseball cap. It might have limited the electrical impulses from the brain to his mouth when he was play calling and scheming.

On a second note, it might be the most embarrassing team effort in Kubiak’s tenure, but I don’t know that it is the most embarrassing game. The Raiders game in ’06 might have been worse, other than DeMeco 14 some odd tackles (he was also named defensive player of the week), but he was certainly the lone bright spot. I think Zoolander had a -32 yards that game or something. I remember the Patriots game in ’06 was pretty bad, too. That was the last time we allowed a return for a touchdown, as Ellis Hobbs took one the distance, and the Pats put up 42 on us, I believe. I do agree that this was an embarrassing team performance, but I would argue that it is not the most embarrassing performance in the Kubes era. Hope this helps.

by Triple347 on Dec 22, 2008 1:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The difference...

…is expectations. Back then, it wasn’t such a shock when we got beat. Even by bad teams. Yesterday was an embarrassment because we had a shot at our first winning record, we were coming off a huge win against a 12-1 team, we had a four game winning streak going, and we were “supposed” to have turned the corner.

We’re sitting here at 7-7 trying to convince the world that we’re not a bottom feeder any more and then we go out and get dominated by the Raiders. That makes it the most embarrassing loss.

by Vega on Dec 22, 2008 1:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

None of these losses is as bad

As the Rosencopter game. That’s the second-worst loss I’ve experienced in all my years of watching Houston pro football, with the worst one being the Buffalo playoff game.

well darn !!

embarrasing? this is the n.f.l. every team has talent. your texans arent great. wake up houston. my raider nation woulda probably been (embarrassed) had we lost 2 your underachieving squad. j russ , d- mac , best corner in n.f.l. shut down a.johnson. not embarrassing . predictable

by raiderdorian on Dec 22, 2008 2:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If it was predictable

The Raiders wouldn’t have been dogs at home.

It’s academic, but if the two teams play this game ten times, I wouldn’t expect the Raiders to win more than three.

Doesn’t matter though, you guys won the actual game, and you deserved it. Tip o’ the cap to you guys.

that being said,,,,

we do suck. we suck with a passion.your coach kubiak has no enthusiasm . but i love the talent there. just like ours needs a leader to push help both teams take the next step. its human nation to overlook teams that arent doin well. your coach, team , and fans all / EXPECTED/ to win. no game is handed to you. toughen up houston. or stay with us in the basement of the n.f.l

by raiderdorian on Dec 22, 2008 3:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Toughen up?

This is a team that stood toe-to-toe with the Titans and came out ahead. I don’t think toughness is the problem. Complacency, yes. Toughness, no.

And while the Texans record doesn’t put them at the top of the league, they’re also not in the basement.

When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.

by tehGrindCrusher on Dec 22, 2008 3:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

I think it is human nature to suffer a setback after an emotional high. But I think it is worth remembering that Houston has come back from behind often and had the opportunity to in this game as well – it was not a beatdown. The offensive line and the receiving corp seemed to give up at the end instead of giving it their all and I think that finally disgusted Schaub to the point of giving in as well. This was not the worst game ever, so go splash some water on your face and get ready for next week. We’ve got a really good franchise brewing and I already can’t wait until next year.

by jaws on Dec 22, 2008 3:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

oh boy

Texans will never be a playoff team as long as they lose games they’re supposed to win. They haven’t stopped playing to the level of their competition (good or bad), although this year was better than years past against worse teams. Until yesterday.

by BigTexBD on Dec 22, 2008 7:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

They will be a playoff team

next season.
