Matt and a guy who commented on his site... a 'Skins fan
…are starting to shake me off this Greg Williams bandwagon.
I think whoever it is will be a guy we haven’t mentioned yet.

As I said in the "Fire Richard Smith Watch"
Apparenly our sacrifices to Durga have not been in vain.

Glad to see that the action was taken swiftly
Have to assume that the other Rick Smith has already been researching available replacements. I thought sure that when Jerry Jones gave Son of Bum the proverbial vote of confidence last week that surely he would be fired, but for now he is sticking to his story. I have always liked Wade Phillips; no idea if he would want to be a DC for the Texans once Jerry realizes his Cowgirls suffered their worst defeat in 20 years, when a win would have put them in the playoffs no less. Botox must have frozen his frontal lobes. Once he wakes up me thinks Wade may be shown the door.

OK I know he is a 3-4 guy, not a 4-3 guy
but I think that good coaches are more than a scheme. They know how to lead and motivate. That megalomaniacal ass clown Jerry Jones has usurped all authority from Wade so that he is no longer able to lead and/or motivate. He should want out of Dallas.

So...
You’re wanting David Carr back?

Wow...
It’s like my birthday and Christmas all wrapped up into one! Actually it’s more like a belated birthday present… hit the big 30 on the 29th.
Got Texans? Visit BattleRedBlog.com for the latest on your Houston Texans!
Congrats
I hear 30 is the new 21.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I bet...
Take home pay is a little better now that you’re not wasting your wad on hookers and blow. Maybe?
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
You know as well as I do...
that wives and kids are WAY more expensive than hookers and drugs. Less fun, too.
Yay, sports.
29th?
Samesies. Happy birthday, man. This was truly the greatest gift of all. It more than makes up for the cold craps table that ruined me in my first legal gambling experience.
This is good news
as long as we upgrade that important position.
Not difficult, I know, but whoever we get needs to have an impact in 2009 or this franchise will suffer a fan base mutiny.
Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.
I'm so happy
srsly.
And I’m also glad to see Hoke leave. The guy has been here since day one and our secondaries have almost always been bad. A tad surprised about Franklin since we heard a lot of good things about him. However, with Okoye’s regression and nobody else getting better other than Mario (and slight improvements from Bulman and Cochran), it’s a bit expected.
Re: Franklin
Agreed; I’m a bit surprised too. I have an interesting anecdote to relate about how he appeared to interact with Bulman and Super Mario on Sunday; I sat way closer to the field than I normally do, so I saw some things I wouldn’t normally get to see.
Stay tuned for the next installment of the PGB.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
franklin
To think that, with Mario on that line, no one other than 90 can generate an ounce of pressure, the dude had to go. Hell, sounded to me like TJ and Weaver were the only ones who liked the guy, and they’ve been getting mad coin to sit on their respective thumbs for 3 years now. Fuck’em all. Maybe those two can join their beloved coach at whatever team he ends up with.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Fitting
that the last play (and drive) RS called as a Texan resulted in a touchdown by the other team.
Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.
UNPOSSIBLE!!
Mike Shannahan and his staff fired in Denver! WHOA!!!
You know this will somehow affect the Texans.

To do what?
There’s no place for him, and teams are going to be fighting with one another over signing him as their next head coach.
the bet...
He somehow ends up in Oakland. Satan’s dad actually gives up a little power to him, and Denver regrets this for years.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
I had a similar thought
But replace Oakland with Kansas City.
I don’t think Shan would go work for Al again.
Wait a minute!
Al Davis is Bud Adams’ father?

Shocked
Though I probably shouldn’t be. Denver hasn’t made postseason noise in a long time, so I guess I can understand it from that angle. For all of DEN’s shortcomings, I really thought Shanahan the Elder was made of teflon; I can’t believe he got the ax.
Cue the “Kubiak Interested In A Return to The Rockies?” headlines now.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Do you think
the Texans would be able and willing to throw money at Steve Spagnulo or Rex Ryan? Both are being interviewed for other positions (well, head coaching gigs), but do you think we at least make a run for them?
I wouldn’t be disappointed.
I'd Love It
But I can’t see either of those guys making a lateral move. Their only movement should be up to HC.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Bank on Spags being a HC in 2009
There IS no lateral move for him – going from DC w/NYG to DC with ANY other team is a step down.

Denver fans on Mile High Report
…are already wanting either of Gibbs or Kyle (at my suggestion), and many of them are openly wondering if they can somehow pry Kubiak away from us.
I like Bronco fans. Probably more than any other non-Texan team in the league. I feel bad for them – because the vast majority of’em are shocked and angry.

Gibbs or Kyle – to be part of the offensive staff, I mean. Obviously not to be the HC.

What does Mike Clark think?
He’s everyone’s favorite Bronco fan, as far as I’m concerned.

I actually went straight to MHR
… Mike wants Kubiak, lol.
They’re ALL shocked, and most of them are pissed.

Fat chance!
I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a lot of bad feelings now between Shanahan and Bowlen. So I wouldn’t think that, even if Kubiak was available, you’d see him up there. But who knows; it probably would be his only out.
It’s probably best to let the dust settle on Shanahan’s firing. Understandably, the fans are upset, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Bowlen made a play for Shanahan ceding some authority, Shanahan balked, and Bowlen put him in place by firing him. It has to be humiliating, but if that’s how it played out, Shanahan should have compromised and forfeited some of the control that he had. Clearly his defensive personnel were horrible.

COME to HOUSTON…Mike on Defense and Kyle on Offense with Kubs running the show!

i agree with him not being defense…i think though he will end up being a texan due to every bronco becoming a texan :)

Mike Nolan For Houston's DC?
McClain mentioned him as a possibility in today’s Chronicle. He has the requisite DEN connection, having coached LBs there, and I’m always a fan of bringing guys with prior head coaching experience onto the staff.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I don't think Nolan would be a good personality fit
I mean, he’s a guy who fought hard to be able to wear a suit on the sideline. Someone once asked Kubiak how he decided what to wear on gameday and he said “whatever they stuff in my locker, I wear it.”
I just don’t see a no-nonsense guy like Kubiak having a guy like Nolan under him.
Plus – Nolan’s a 3-4 guy is he not?

by HoustonDiehards on Dec 31, 2008 10:43 AM CST up reply actions
I think the suit was an homage to his father that wore suits when he coached. Don't know too much about him beside the fact that the guys on Sirius NFL radio seemed to like him a lot. Don't know if that is a good thing or not...
Oh yeah, I know the reason for the suit
But that’s my point – Kubiak would never be concerned with something as meaningless as that. That and we’ve heard many times that Nolan has a GIGANTIC ego.

Nolan's Allegedly A 4-3 Guy
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
i heard
that the DB’s coach from the Redskins seems like a good possibilty…he sounds good…
“The Texans are expected give "strong” consideration to making Redskins DBs coach Jerry Gray their next defensive coordinator.
A former Houston Oiler, Gray has experience coordinating, a playing history that commands respect, and knows the area. Coach Gary Kubiak also wants to keep his 4-3 defense intact and Gray has never taught any other alignment."

Predicts Frank Bush gets the nod at DC and that Smithiak brings in Alex Gibbs’ son to coach the secondary.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Lance makes sense, personal relationships are always a strong hiring factor
Gibbs Sr. is not a lock to come back for a 2nd season. Hiring his son, whom Kubiak also knows from Denver, makes sense on that level as well as trying to get Papa Alex back for a curtain call. He knows and likes Bush from prior asociations as well, and tried to hire him as DC 3 years ago. This is Smithiak’s 1st gig as head coach/GM, so not surprising that he would give Bush his 1st crack at being a DC. Bush started years ago as a LB drafted by the Oilers in the 1980’s. His promising playing career was tragically cut short by a neck injury that revealed a narrow cervical canal, and he was advised to retire. It seems kinda poetic that he should rise to prominence back where he started.
by oiler-texan diehard on Jan 1, 2009 9:09 PM CST up reply actions
Poetry is bullshit in football.
Sorry, but a nice personal story doesn’t make you qualified. Now, Bush on his own merits, other than the story, is just as qualified as anyone else, but I can leave the story at the door.
I’m not much for nepotism, but limited returns on Baby Shan suggest he’s got the beans. I don’t know where that leaves us with Alex Gibbs’ son coaching defensive backs…
Realistically speaking, putting your money on Bush as the next DC isn’t a bad bet, but I’m not sure if he’s the best fit. Really, there’s going to be downsides to every guy that they interview. I’m still riding high from Kubes firing Smith. As long as we don’t squander DeMeco and Mario with front-seven alignment changes.
Not suggesting that Bush has an edge because of "poetry"
but because Kubiak wanted to give him the job 3 years ago, and was denied permission by the Cardinals. Obviously Smithiak are going to base the hire on what is best for the immediate future of the Texans. Both of their jobs may hinge upon this decision and how well their defense plays the next 1-2 years. If the Texans do the unthinkable and backslide next year, then people will be calling for Smithiak’s jobs next year.
If hiring Gibbs Jr, is what it takes to get Gibbs Sr. back for another year, then so be it. Alex Gibbs has an almost too good to be true track record, and if he comes back for another year and we stay healthy on the OL, then our offense will do more than just rack up yards between the 20’s next year. Nepotism will never die because all other things being equal, the choice will always go to whomever is more familiar. It’s just human nature, and in this case the benefit to the entire organization makes so much sense.

Good info on candidates
Part 1 – Gregg Williams
Part 2 – Rod Marinelli
Part 3 – Jerry Gray
Part 4ish – The Larry Coyer Conspiracy
My money’s on what is suggested in #4. I would like to see Gray, however. But 2 good years, one bad (after 2 bad years of transition?). So, eh, I could be convinced by anybody right now.
Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.
