BREAKING NEWS: Texans To Waive Flanagan, Putzier, And Hodgdon?

It's not official yet, but John McClain reports that the Texans will release C Mike Flanagan, TE Jeb Putzier, and C Drew Hodgdon today.  None of these cuts are a total surprise (see here and here), though I am a bit shocked to see the Texans cutting ties with Mike Flanagan so quickly with Steve McKinney coming off ACL surgery.  Best of luck to Flanagan, Putzier, and Hodgdon as/if they pursue their careers elsewhere.

Also noted in McClain's story:  The Texans aren't expected to offer Jerome Mathis a contract.  Better late than never, I guess.  He'll soon be free to pollute another city's police blotter. Good riddance.

Center
Well, Hodgdon was a no brainer and Putzier makes a lot of sense.  Flanagan likely doesn't have another season left in his body, especially if he's asked to get any sort of playing time.  We've got Eslinger and White on the roster, so we'll see what happens.  Maybe we'll be bringing a new guy in as well?

Re: Center
I really have no idea.  I know that the team likes White's versatility.  Eslinger won the Outland and Rimington trophies in 2005, so he's classified as intriguing (to me, anyway).  Maybe Studdard gets a look at C?  Any way you slice it, I'm still surprised that Flanagan is gone like this.  Unless, of course, he made it clear he was done, in which case it makes all the sense in the world.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Re: Re: Center
White's versatility is definitely a plus.  I don't know if Studdard gets a look or not, but I'm very intrigued by Eslinger as well.  I think if Flanagan said outright he's done, then he probably would've retired.  Now he might be forced into retirement.  Only time will tell...

In the Zone
I don't know if McKinney has quick enough feet for Gibbs's ZBS, (even more so now after the knee injury); therfore, I see them giving Eslinger a real shot given his size and his college credentials.  If he can't hack it at the pro level, I see them turning to Okobi to be the man at center.

Old Man Steve
You know, that's a good point.  Steve is 32 years old, and will turn 33 this October.  Who knows how he'll return from this injury.  It's a shame, he's been a solid player for us.

Old Man Steve, and White
Lance Zierlein wrote a while back that McKinney would be back in time for the season. The running game took off after McKinney moved into the starting lineup in 2006, and sputtered after he was injured. So my guess is that he has enough speed and agility for ZBS. White hurt his knee in December. Haven't seen anything on him since (surgery?).

BREAKING NEWS: McClain Does His Job
"The General" actually takes a break from his amatuer porn and home movie making to report actual Texans news today. What the hell is going on?

It must have been a quick break
Because apparently he forgot to use the spell check.
