Nick Ferguson To Visit Reliant Park
According to McClain, Smithiak is hosting free agent safety Nick Ferguson in Houston today. I'll give you three (3) guesses where he played last year, and the first two (2) don't count.
If Ferguson does in fact sign with the Texans, it would appear that it'd likely be for a back-up job in the secondary. While he started seven (7) games last year, he hasn't started 16 games since 2005, which is also when he (1) picked off five passes; (2) defended eight passes; and (3) was not 33 years old. If anyone has any other observations on Ferguson or the fact that I fully expect Reliant Stadium to be re-christened "5,280 Feet Vertical Field" by the opening of the 2010 season, please enlighten us in the Comments below.
Update [2008-3-27 17:20:58 by Tim]: The Denver Post is reporting that Ferguson inked a one-year deal with your Houston Texans (hat tip to our buddies at Mile High Report). Seems like he and Rick Smith go back a ways; the fact that Smith liked him enough to bring him to Houston makes me less skeptical of the deal, though I think we can hold off on printing those Ferguson Pro Bowl jerseys for now.

I'm a long-time Broncos fan
On the lighter side, he did show up for games against Jacksonville and Pittsburgh last season, in which I was finally glad to see him.

Welcome, FBF
Ferguson...ugh. Kind of what I thought. That said, our secondary is so paper thin that anyone with a pulse is worth a look.
Finally, nice sig line. With a rep like that, we'll be the favorite Texans fansite of all the goth kids in no time! You know, if they liked sports at all.

Hey FlaBroncoFan!
Ferguson: Just an all around reliable dude. He'll sit on the bench for you or come in and play his life out for you...doesn't mean he will do a good job, but if you are looking for a smart player who is just needed for emergency depth, he is as good as anyone else. His play fell way off last year resulting in Denver going from "We didn't draft a safety because there is no chance he would start" after the draft, to sitting Ferguson and cutting Curome Cox and starting our #3 CB Foxworth when Lynch got hurt. Safety is a big hole for us right now.
But hey, if you're looking for a safety, just toss an offer at Hamza abdullah, just like you did Myers. We gave him minimum tender as well, so you would owe us a whopping seventh rounder for him, and he is a young stud who is only going to get better and who we can't afford to lose.
Speaking of affording, need a CB too? Foxworth and Paymah are both excellent and could be starters on most teams, with Foxy being more all around good and Paymah being an excellent big nickel type defender. Again, we gave them the lowest tender, though at least we would get 3rds for each of them.
Basically, any player with a contract coming up this year or next year on the Broncos, has only a miniscule chance of staying with the team. We went on a free agent binge and now we are paying the piper. Our 13 mil of dead cap space would have been pretty useful for resigning some of these young guys.
At least when Houston picks them up it like they are staying in the family.
P.S. One last thing about Ferguson: after he was relegated to a backup role last year, he was still coming in in certain situations, and once, on a goalline play he recovered a fumble in the backfield ending the opponents scoring opportunity. He also recovered a fumble on STs. (yep, the starting FS was happy to play STs after being demoted. What a guy.)

Much More Optimistic
Ferguson sounds like a real team guy. Kubes has shown a fondness for unselfish, flexible veterans who'll play their guts out on special teams, so maybe Ferguson would be a good fit after all.

All in the Family
Imagine Texan fan: 3rd and 12 - we're sending Elvis, Mario, Amobi, and Chaun at the QB?
Woooo. I love me some speedy DE's.
