BREAKING NEWS: Texans To Sign Rosevelt Colvin

According to Megan Manfull, your Houston Texans are set to sign LB Rosevelt Colvin (career stats here) today.

Solis did a nice job filling us in on Colvin's background, highlighting the injury and age concerns that offset the lure of his possible productivity as an edge rusher opposite Super Mario. In my opinion, the terms of Colvin's deal will be the clear deciding factor in determining whether this is a deal we should get excited about. Small amount of guaranteed money and tons of incentive opportunities? Love the deal. Significant guaranteed money? I'm not nearly as much a fan of the signing.

As we wait for details of the deal to leak out, let us know your preliminary thoughts in the Comments below.

Colvin could be boom or bust

This could certainly be boom or bust for Smithiak but imagine a LB corps of a healthy Colvin, DeMeco, and Greenwood….NASTY!!!!....diles, adibi, chaun, and kbent could make this unit tops in the afc

I approve

I mean, assuming we didn’t just give him Anthony Weaver money, I think this is an awesome signing. The dude can mentor younger OLBs like Diles and gives us an edge rusher. Plus, he’s flexible enough that he can blitz from the SLB spot or line up at DE (which was his role for all intents and purposes as an OLB in the 3-4).

Yay, sports.

Pats Fan's showing him lots of love

I’m on board with Matt and disco, I don’t see how this signing can be a bad thing. In the comments section on the ESPN story, there are a bunch of Pat’s fans posting with comments like

“Good pickup for Houston. We will miss you Rosey. Class act and great defender. “

It seems like he’s well liked by the fans. He also does a weekly radio show in Boston. Hopefully he becomes a fan favorite here as well.

That was

awesome stuff….Pats fans showing some class! Only further shows how insufferable the Dallas fans are….they can’t come close to those fans….or us may I say.
As far as R. Colvin, I think we have a winner. Kubes is filling the cracks.

Damn

I feel like the ugly girl left on the wall with an empty dance card. I’ve openly dismissed the once hypothetical deal (back in Feb), and became even more apprehensive as the possibility began to materialize. I’ve said before, as long as the deal isn’t going to break the bank, or leave us holding the bag – bring him aboard.

While I still have my doubts, that will in no way affect the zeal for the team or his success – Suit him up in battle red and I’ll cheer for him louder than anyone else. I hope he comes in and keeps offensive coordinators up at night, as they try to figure out how they’re gonna contend with the likes of Mario, Amobi, Okam, and Colvin. That’s a tall order for any offensive line… (yes I said Okam… I have a hunch).

What number do you think he’ll wear? Can’t rock 59 no mo.

Dunno

He wore 49 at Purdue…maybe we’ll claim he’s a DE and give him a 90s number.

Yay, sports.

pass rushing LB's

lots of pass rushing LBs end up with numbers in the 90’s. Merriman, Ware, etc.

by marroncito on Jun 16, 2008 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Right...

but, according to NFL numbering rules, I believe all of your 50s have to be used up before you can get into the 90s with your LBs. A small hurdle, no doubt.

Yay, sports.

Good Signing

On the plus side, could be another 4-8 sacks, and matchup difficulties that result in a couple of sacks for other players. At worst, he’s not playing for the Colts.

Wonder why the delay on the terms of the deal?

Is it just me, or are the terms of the deal taking a while to leak out? According to Rieken’s AP article, the agent hinted that the deal could be multi-year by saying: “I think that you’re going to see Rosevelt Colvin here for an extended period.”

A BIG HMMMMMMMMMMMM

Am I the only one that’s worried about this? By everyone’s reaction on the interwebs, I think I am ><.

Contract

We likely overpaid for him, but as long as it wasn’t a stupid amount (and it’s Rick Smith so you know it won’t be), I’m cool with it. It was a need, and there weren’t really many other options.

"there weren't really many other options"

That might have been the most telling thing I’ve read about this whole deal. I just wonder if we could have gotten Colvin-at-31-type production from a younger, less expensive player. Another big HMMMMMMM….

I’m holding out judgment until I see what the terms of the deal are. Sure, he’s an old man by NFL terms, but if he’s going to be a pass-rush specialist, then his age isn’t as much of a big deal. Plus, there are all the intangibles he brings to the team. After all, he started in the last Super Bowl.

Let’s assume for a moment that: Mario is able to maintain his level of play or even improve; Amobi shows the same kind of improvement that Mario did in his second year; the Texans get improved production out of the gang of players that will be lining up on the other end of the line from Mario; and linebackers like Thompson, Colving and DeMeco blitz a little more. Assuming these things happen (and I don’t think that these are unrealistic assumptions), our secondary is going to get a lot better, even if Petey is out there, due to the increased pressure opposing quarterbacks are going to be facing.

So, in general, I like the deal. But I’d like to see what the terms are before I am fully sure.

Jason Babin?

or is he old news not worth bringing back?

by marroncito on Jun 17, 2008 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

You and I...

might be the only two people in the world who are pro-Babin. Hell, I wrote a post about why he should be a STARTING DE before last season.

Yay, sports.

by MDC on Jun 18, 2008 8:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Count me in...

I always loved what Babin did when he was rushing the passer that last year he was with us. I wouldn’t mind seeing him come back at all. Especially on the cheap. He’s just not an every down DE.

So, I'm bangin this chick, right...

by beefy on Jun 18, 2008 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

No

Right or wrong, I have always resented J. Babin for being the guy we essentially gave up our entire 2004 Draft (after Dunta) to get. Not his fault for being a prime example of why the Capers and Casserly regime was doomed, but Babin will always remind me of that fateful April afternoon, when I winged my sneaker at my TV screen and screamed in agony.

Yes, I know I need a hobby.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Jun 18, 2008 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

True...

Couple that with the fact that we had to pay him first round money to A). Not get anything done in our then-run 3-4 defense, and B). Just finally start to somewhat produce, but only as a pass rusher. I get it.
I just always liked the guy, for some reason. Maybe because we only had 3 first round picks to that point, and you had to pull for ANY production out of them. Tough times.

So, I'm bangin this chick, right...

by beefy on Jun 18, 2008 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I think...

part of the reason I liked him was because I liked him as a college player and I thought he could be good in the right system. Of course, the “right” system is not “hey, kid, we’re going to move you to a totally different position and ask you to do things you’ve never had to do before. Good luck.”

Yay, sports.

Although the $$$ are important, they are not the only factor

I agree with your statement that Rick Smith won’t pay stupid dollars based upon what we have seen since he took charge of the Texans. I just hope he wasn’t feeling undue pressure to not only upgrade the pass rush, but keep the Colts from getting him as well.

At this point in Colvin’s career, he may have preferred the Texans all along considering their grass field and warm weather will be more kind to his physique than the turf in Indy. His agent may have been using the Colts simply as leverage to drive up his price.

If Colvin provides a slight boost to the Texans as the statistics in Steve Campbell’s article in today’s Chronicle suggest ,(http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/campbell/5841303.html)
“With Colvin in the lineup the first 11 games last season, the Patriots allowed 16.8 points and 281.5 yards per game. Those averages crept up to 17.8 points and 303.2 yards in Colvin’s absence the final five games. He isn’t going to revolutionize defense, in other words, but he can help make a difference.”

then he is worth a decent contract. If he somehow recaptures his old form and provides a great pass rush then he is worth more than whatever Smith had to pay. Impossible to judge the risk/reward ratio without knowing the details of the contract but Smith hasn’t made any major blunders yet, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt until the financial terms are released.

GIO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!!

expectations

i’d be happy if he got 5 sacks this season as a role-player. if he pushes 8-10 he was a steal.
