He wasn't going anywhere...........
.............and that’s a good thing. Why would he want to? He has started something big, and won’t get the credit he will deserve unless he finishes the job. His drafting and free agent signings have been nothing short of brilliant. He inherited an absolute mess. Casserly could not have mismanaged the cap more poorly….continually overpaying for free agents. He drafted poorly. Remember trading 3 picks to move up for Jason Babin? How about trading away 2 high draft picks for Philip Buchanon? Simply put, he created a roster that ranked near the bottom in talent level, while simultaneously being salary cap strapped because of his free agency foolishness. In 2 short years Smith has retooled the roster and built a playoff contender. We still have plenty of room for improvement, but have a bright future to look forward to because of Smith’s work ethic, which should draw comparisons to the late great Mike Holovak. Holovaks’ tireless behind the scenes work as a scout-then-GM laid the foundation for the Oilers string of playoff appearances in the Warren Moon era. I see the same thing coming with Smithiak in charge. They work well together and never stop digging for players. Remember picking up Will Demps, who was coming off elbow surgery, during the ‘07 season? He just brought in Rosevelt Colvin, an OLB who has demonstrated pass rushing ability. He may be damaged goods, but you can be sure that if he has some game left in him, that Smithiak will give him a chance, and not waste $$$ in the process. Not picking up a pash rusher was the one thing we did not address in the draft. I kind of wish he had taken a flyer on a DE in the 7th round, but knowing Smith, Alex Brink is probably a real good QB. Smith and Kubes are getting the Texans respect around the league.
Are you ready for some Monday Night Football? How about three 3 o’clock starts too.?Those games did not happen because the Texans are expected to be a losing team.
Can’t wait for the season to start.

Re: Brink
Read Solis’ piece on Brink here at BRB, and you’ll understand. Feel free to sip on the tasty, tasty Kool Aid with us, and give in to the dark side.

Just a little extra suger for the fiends
No, but really – what I tried to do with those player profile pieces is explain why the Texans drafted them; try to highlight the skill sets that made them NFL worthy. Yeah I could have focused on their imperfections, but that doesn’t explain why they are a part of this team. Besides, if I gave you all the unsavory tidbits (and there were a few), that wouldn’t have fit my focus – which again was to bring these new players into the collective conscious of the Texans fan base on the right foot. If they screw it up from here – its on them.

Should mention
I should mention that those player profiles kicked ass.
Thanks for taking the effort to do that.

It doesn't take much to get me excited
As a long suffering fan of Houston pro sports, I am hungry for success. Your profiles of each of the Texans newbie draft picks were all enjoyable reads, and serve to build the excitement in anticipation of the upcoming season. I continue to grow more confident that this will be our best season yet. Thank you for taking the time and effort to give us fans much more information than the local fishwrap, and their mighty team of columnists.
Go Texans!!!!!!!!!!!!

What can I say...?
I’m a fan first and a hack second…
I know the fanbase, because I’m a part of it, I’m entrenched in it. I’ve been through the blood, the mud, and the beer. I also know better days are only a season or so away. All of us who have been through the bullshit years, and stuck by the team anyway, will have every right to stand up and shout. When the team starts rolling and becomes a perennial contender, and you start seeing a whole bunch of brand new jerseys and hats, you will know deep down that you were there from the get-go, supporting the team all the way.
It’s easy to be a fan when your team is 14-2… but what about when it goes 2-14? If the lord curses my team, then so be it – I’ll be there (again ><). But for now, everything is looking up, and I wholeheartedly believe, that we fans will finally get to bask in the glow of a winning season. A championship not withstanding, our first winning season may go down as the most reward season of them all. Puro pinche Texans compa.
