Mike Bell is Your Newest Texan!
Megan Manful of the Houston Chronicle is reporting that the Texans have signed free agent running back Mike Bell. For the Texans, it adds another former Bronco who is familiar with the offensive system being implemented by head coach Gary Kubiak.
Whether or not this means the end of the the Chris Brown experiment in Houston is yet to be seen, however it does indicate that the Texans are serious about establishing a consistant running game in 2008.
Manful also reported that S Brandon Mitchell was released to make room for the newly acquired running back.
Feel free to leave your opinions of the signing in the comments below.

Let The Denver Retread Comments Begin
It’s inevitable. In some people’s minds, half the roster came from Denver or Green Bay.

MITCHELL was cut, not Harrison
The Chronicle blew it….and just now fixed the error. Unbelievable.

Now I'm okay with it.
The signing I mean, not the Chron. God still don’t like ugly.

This move makes sense for a few reasons
1) Don’t want to wear out the RB’s in camp. Remember this is the first year that a player limit has been imposed BEFORE camp has started. Typically RB was a position where most teams would intentionally load up on bodies that had no chance of making the team to lessen the load on the likely roster players during the dog days of camp. Considering the age/condition of Ahman Green, Chris Brown & Taylor, Kubes probably would have liked to bring in one to two more RB’s just to compensate for that.
2) We had excess safeties already. Gonna have to cut at least 3 more safeties before the roster is finalized.
3) Mike Bell has a realistic chance of being a contributor & already knows the system.
Just another braniac move by Smithiak. Rick Smith has to be among the early favs for exec of the year.

Mike Bell = smooth move
I already posted about it so I wont repeat myself too much.
Awesome move, though. I liked him in Denver, and I like him here. It’s not too often a 24 year-old RB with treads on the tires and the ability to use them falls into your lap.
All I have to say is best of luck to the newlyweds that caused Chris Brown to show up late. If it weren’t for you guys…Bell probably wouldn’t be here.
Wake me when it's football season.

Good Acquisition
I was so excited about Green that I thought I’d personally jinxed it when he got injured. So… for the sake of the mighty Texans, I will temper my excitement about Bell and just say “good.”

All's well that ?
Thanks for lettin us know that corporate politics is alive and well in Texans camp.

As I Said To Solis Earlier Today...
I firmly believe that Chris Brown will never play a regular season snap for your Houston Texans.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

I'm with you
I think if he doesn’t get into practice by monday, he’s the next cut. The team has proven it’s dedication to Green, Taylor, Slaton, and even Walker. I think that it’s a battle between Brown and Bell for the last RB spot, and Brown had better be scared now.

The Mike Bell signing really underscores...
How poor a decision it was to sign Chris Brown. I mean, why would a team sign a running back whose made a career out of being inneffective and getting injured.
I’m afraid the Texans running game is likely to be terrible once again as FO is simply not committed to truly improving the position.
by BeansCarter on Aug 1, 2008 10:45 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Why - ?
Because we’re installing a simplified run blocking scheme that is tried and true? Or is it because all our hopes hinged on Brown’s health or participation in training camp? Or is it because we didn’t bring Ron “Speed Demon” Dayne back? No, let me guess, the FO always makes terrible moves… whatever.
Look – Fact of the matter is that we have five backs (six including Brown) that can all outproduce Ron Dayne in the ZBS. Do we have the next Adrian Peterson on our roster, no. Are we going to have a “terrible” running game – I seriously doubt it. The FO brought Brown in and he showed out well in mini-camp and OTAs. If he can’t go by the middle of TC, he’s gone. No worries, we have five other backs who are all busting their ass to make the team.
Don’t you have a QB to go idolize?

It is clear that you have no understanding of the situation
Any serious NFL fan knows that even the best RB’s cannot flourish without adequate blocking. See OJ Simpson’s stats early in his career. Was he a bad player his first 3 seasons with the Bills, and then suddenly make the transformation to superstar and amass a 5 year run (1972 – 1976) that was the best in NFL history up to that time? Of course not. It is common knowledge that the Bills’ line play was miserable and even the greatest RB in the league could put up good, but not great, numbers behind their subpar blocking.
It is also common knowledge that the Texans OL was a primary area of need after the 2007 season. Unfortunately there were other areas of need: CB, S, DE, RB and LB. In fact WR, QB and PK were arguably the only areas that were set. Many mock drafts had us taking a RB with our top pick. I see that you too were buying into that. Instead Smith used free agency & trades to get a starting CB to fill in for Dunta, a starting center to replace McKinney, a couple of speedy LB’s (Thompson & Bentley) and a pass rushing specialist in Colvin. He also was able to trade down, adding 2 more draft picks, and still get a LT that projects as a good fit for the ZBS. Given the hand he was dealt his moves were nothing short of brilliant. He did all this without overpaying, keeping our cap in great shape for the future. Sure, picking a franchise RB always makes a splash, but building the line first is much smarter.
Chris Brown’s upside made him worth signing, again without blowing big money. He looked great in OTA’s. In light of Brown’s back spasms, Smith again has acted quickly by shedding an excess safety and adding Bell, who has a legitimate chance of contributing in the near term. He has not given up on Brown yet, but has done the right thing for the organization, keeping open all posible options for success.
As SOLIS has accurately pointed out, the Texans running game will not be spectacular this year, but is certainly to be better than last year. We can address the (apparent) need for a marquee RB after the ‘08 season, or we might find out that Slaton, Taylor, Bell, et al are a lot better than we thought. The Texans are committed to be a run-first team, and will continue to make all the right moves to get there ASAP.
GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!!

Barry Sanders did not play behind a good o-line.
Come on, any “serious NFL fan” knows that.
Look oiler-texan, if you’re gonna run off your mouth in such an arrogant, patronizing way, it might help if you at least did your homework.
Your OJ argument is wrong. OJ’s stats were fine early in his career, with YPC of 3.9, 4.1, and again 4.1 in 69-71. Total Yards were low because he wasn’t carrying the ball often. It took him two years to carry the ball 300 times.
Good running backs find ways to get yardage.
The Texans Cut-blocking zone-blocking scheme is a dirty way to play football anyways.
If you want to see a real running game, just watch the Jags and the Titans this year.

Chris Brown
At 6’3” and 220 lbs. Brown is a good sized rb. He averaged 4.5 YPC last season when healthy. If he can get and stay healthy (big if) he could be a good producer in the ZBS. I sure hope these back spasms quit and he is back on the field Monday. Don’t know much about Bell except that he knows the system we run. It’ll all sort itself out by the end of the preseason.

Still undecided
As a proud member of BRB, I’ve used nicknames for most of the teams in the NFL in my posts and comments. The Baby Horses play in Indiana, The Formeroilers in Tennessee, and the Shiney Sports Cars in Jacksonville, just to mention the AFC South teams. But I’ve never arrived at one for our Houston Texans. Just couldn’t find the right ring of irreverance and yet not be disrespectful at the same time. But with all these former Bronco players, not to mention the coaching staff, I’m thinking about Denver East for our team. Still not settled on anything yet, though. Mike Bell is agood fit IMO, by the way.

Over at MHR
a few of us call the Texans the “Broncos East,” “Houston Broncos,” “Southern Broncos affiliate,” or things of that sort. I (and I assume the rest of MHR) mean no disrespect by any of them, we’re all still distraught over the loss of Kubiak though. if any NFL fan were to have a #2 team, mine would easily be Houston.

Damn I was all over this move until the curtain was pulled back............
only to reveal that Mike Bell was out of shape. How a young aspiring professional football player could be out of shape at this time of year is beyond me. I just don’t get it. The new 80 man limit means there wil be tons more player movement for the next month than ever before. This does not bode well for Bell, that he was taking it easy when he should have been ramping up his workouts. Guess he is not a winner. Guess we do not need him after all.
Chris Brown practiced today. Everyone needs to cross their fingers that he will hold together for the next 6 months.
5 Days to go till we can show the Broncos West that they are inferior to the “Broncos East” :) GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!!!!
