John Lynch - Texan or No Texan

He was in on 59 hits last year, missing three games due to injury.  Sure, he's lost a step, but he personifies leadership and intensity on and off the field, from everything I've ever read.  He wouldn't be guaranteed a full-time gig here (which was his motivation for fleeing the Rockies), but I can't imagine he couldn't earn one by the end of camp.  I say - sign him.  Thoughts?

please no. we already have a glut at safety. nick ferguson is probably a better safety than him. i don’t see him beating out Demps, Brown or Earl.

Trust me...

Lynch is WAY better than Ferguson.

range

you’ve watched him game in and game out. does he have any range anymore?

by marroncito on Aug 1, 2008 1:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hah

Lynch’s range has been a joke seemingly since he came to Denver. He plays best in the box, as “a fourth linebacker,” to quote Champ Bailey.

So you're saying that now I have to think of some witty Sig that will be applicable across all the SBN sites? Go TexanHornStros!

Think about this

Lynch has a reputation as a hard hitting, intelligent leader. Sure, maybe he has lost a step, but who says he has to start. Why not bring him in on third down zone packages, or to spell the young guys and provide some hard nosed run support?

With his familiarity with the sytem and Smithiak, he’d practically be a position coach to the DBs. I’m not saying throw the payroll at him, but I am saying it’s worth thinking about. He doesn’t have a lot of playing years left, but he could be to the Texans what Bill Bates was to the Cowboys, who still suck, by the way.

still don’t want him. he’s like adam archuleta. he’s a safety way past his prime. he takes bad angles. yeah he can still bring it in run support, but he’s a liability like Roy Williams in Dallas. I’d rather have 2 younger rangy safties that TE’s won’t abuse and won’t leave the CBs uncovered.

Re: Think about this

He apparently does have to start because he left Denver as a result of the fact that he was not slated to start.

Wouldn't bother me

If the braintrust thinks he’s better than what we have, I’ll trust them. I mean honestly, he’s old, like Nick Ferguson. If they signed Lynch, both he and Ferguson wouldn’t make the final roster, so really – one old dud or the other, fine by me.

Freudian slip

I meant dude, not “dud”.... but that also works. Heh.

by HoustonDiehards on Aug 1, 2008 12:45 PM CDT   0 recs

I heard he will retire

...or there is at least a good shot at it. If they bring him in and he beats out someone we have now, then fine….but he gets abused in pass coverage. Also, hasn’t he had like three more concussions than Steve Young?

We don’t have a shortage at safety right now like we did at RB. I don’t think it’s going to happen.

Well

he’s always struck me as a player who would someday be a coach, but I’ll trust Smithiak and whatever they decide.

I agree with marroncito, I vote no

We have been too slow at safety forever. Does anyone remember Matt Stevens? He was a member of the super bowl champs Patriots the year before he became the Texans inaugural free safety. He was always a step late. No speed.

I have always admired Lynch, but his time has come and gone. We have plenty of speedy linebackers who can provide what Lynch does best, run support. We need faster safeties who can help cover 4-5 wideout packages. We have plenty of safeties in camp already.

Re: Does anyone remember Matt Stevens?

Anyone who hasn’t had hundreds of hours of therapy definitely remembers him.

Yay, sports.

As to the point of this Fanpost.

No, under no circumstances (save for the death of a large number of players) should we sign an old safety who can barely play the pass anymore.

Yay, sports.

I agree

Signing Lynch to a reasonable contract to play in certain packages and otherwise tutor the younger secondary could only help in my opinion.

And while I’m wary of furthering the Texans reputation of being “The Broncos Light”, I’d still sign him up.

That which does not kill you, still probably hurts pretty bad...
