Texans 27, Jags 30
Fecal matter. The good news is that your Houston Texans showed up, and that includes Matt Schaub, who answered the bell in the biggest game of his professional career. The bad news is that the Texans are 0-3. Vent as you see fit.

There's no good news when you're 0-3.
At least, not until like Tuesday.

I'm going to take a positive outlook
This was a hell of a game.
I know it’s fashionable to crap on the defense but you have to give credit to the Jags. We put a lot of pressure on Garrard and he made some great plays. If our coaches don’t have a brain fart in the first quarter, we’re all talking about how brilliant this was, etc.
Schaub was awesome, and I think our d did a very good job of keeping MJD and Taylor from beating us.
It sucks that we let Garrard beat us with his legs, but all in all, this outfit is light years ahead of where they were even last week. It’s like Houston’s professional football team finally showed up.

Agreed, palpable progress was put on display
but we all know there are no moral victories in the National Football League.
This game reminded me of so many Oiler failures of years past. Defense cannot hold the lead down the stretch. We were just one big defensive play away from victory. Very frustating indeed.
Need to fugget about it, and get down to business this week. It don’t get any easier.

If we hit Peyton
Like we hit Garrard today, he’s going to be in the hospital.

Tip of the hat
You always play us tough. Fantastic game. I look forward to our Monday Night Showdown.
Slaton is a stud, I was high on him during the draft season and was sad to see the Texans pick him. Cause he’s the real deal.
Good game!

Good season
I guess we can talk about draft picks and when we’ll pick, because my hopes of a playoff team and some national respect have basically been thrown into the garbage.
Why is our defense so bad? =/
some good things. seriously.
In the big scheme of things, a loss is a loss, and it hurts our chances for a playoff/winning season. But coming off this one, I can say with honesty that I think the Texans can win at least 3 of the games in the upcoming 4-game homestand.
Has anyone looked at the box score? Texans went 9-13 (!!!!) on 3rd down conversions. Only committed 2 penalties. Held Fred Taylor and MJD to a combined 17 carries for 57 yards.
And how bout Slaton? We have a legitimate backfield threat now, both on running plays and passing plays. Opposing teams will have to plan against screen passes and wheel routes now. Also, great games by OD and Walter. The original ’Dre had a big 4th quarter catch and opens up the underneath/middle of the field for the other guys.
Yes, we lost; and yes, Garrard ate our lunch most of the time. We did get in his face a lot in the second half, though, and most qb’s (peyton, collins, among others) would not be able to scramble away as effectively, nevertheless run for 4th down conversions. But honestly, you have to feel good looking back at the game. We played them drive for drive, and you just know if we won the OT coin toss we probably would have won.
My bottom line is that we played very well. About as well as we knew we were capable of before week one, in fact. And I see greener pastures ahead.
I'm Much More Optimistic
Than I was this morning. And you hit the nail on the head—win 3 of the 4 we’ve got coming at home, and this season is much more palatable.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Agree
With all of this. It always sucks to lose, particularly in OT, but I think this is the first time we’ve been able to feel good about this team this season.
Schaub was awesome, and I think our pass rush was the best it’s been since Denver last year. You just have to tip your cap to Garrard — he was the difference in the game.

Not to sound like Hillary Clinton's media relations staff, but...
I believe we would have won under a more appropriate rules system. I hate NFL overtime rules. According to this article, teams that win the coin toss end up winning the game 59.9% of the time. Yes, some of those times the team that lost the coin toss won on a defensive touchdown, or the team that lost the coin toss ended up scoring on their one possession, but it’s undeniable that it has an effect on the winner of the game. Which is unfortunate, because it has nothing to do with the skills of the two teams on balance (not just one offense vs. one defense).
Think about it this way: a team with a .599 win percentage would win 9.58 games in a regular season. A team with a .401 win percentage would win 6.42 games in a season.
Re: Overtime
I wouldn’t argue that the Texans lost this game at the OT coin flip, but I think that’s a bigger indictment of the defense than the rule system.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
re: Indictment & Overtime
I have no beef with either of the fine points you gentlemen make.
However, this game would have gone a much different direction if any 1 of the 11 players on our punt return team had clued in to the fact that the Jags did not even have a punter on the field. Just sayin’.
I think someone said the P split off and lined up as a TE on the play

That's what happened
Podlesh lined up like he was a TE, Owens got the snap.

Damn You, Jay
You just leaked the title of my Post-Game Breakdown tomorrow. Spoiler! Spoiler!
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I'm not all that disappointed.
They gave me four quarters of exciting football. All I can really ask for. And since we’re probably not going to make the playoffs this year anyways, maybe that was better for the long-term anyways as far as draft picks go. My only worry is that Kubiak is going to wind up losing his job at this rate, which seems like a bum deal for somebody who turned a 2-14 team into a mildly competitive unit.
Question though: I think there was near-unanimous consent that 2-3 would be a solid start to the season given the schedule. The plan was most likely to beat the Ravens, then win one of the divisional games. The hurricane sort of derailed that plan, but if we beat the Colts next week would you all feel pretty good about the season? 1-3 wouldn’t look great, but that would be three losses coming against playoff teams on the road; the kind of games you lose more often than not.
If We Beat The Colts Next Week...
I’m very happy with where we’re at, especially considering the eggs laid in the first two games.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I really think
we can beat The Colts, If Mario has 3 more inches of reach, he has multiple sacks. Peyton aint that fast. If We win this game, there wouldn’t be near as much craping on the Defense. The main point is The Texans looked like an NFL team and they will win several games this season, maybe even 10.
GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!
Exactly my thinking
Now that we have our offense back, we have to go find the defense.
By the way, the more I think about it, the more I think Schaub was unbelievable yesterday.

I just watched the DVR replay
both QBs had unbelievebly games I think. The Jags Defense was just as “bad”. I hate using Bad because this was a great game. Maybe I’m just MANIACAL, but I think our season is still going to be very good, probably not playoffs, but we have played 3 very good teams and looked poor until yesterday. Take any of the positives from the first 2 games and there are glimpses of a good team…….all I’m saying is I honestly do think they are the best winless team and will beat the Colts.
GO TEXANS!!!!!!!!!
Kubiak won't get fired over this
Look how long McNair stuck with Capers. McNair strikes me as the kind of guy who wants to have a coach around for 15, 20 years a la Pittsburgh. He’s no Al Davis or Jerry Jones.
And all that is supposing that Kubiak deserves to get fired, an idea that I would aggressively contest.
A masterful Game
Guys…just wanted to thank you for a masterful and hard fought game. I hope you can take away from this that the Texans are soon to be a team to be feared…because I can see that the weapons are in place….just execution and solid effort from all members of the team at one time and you will be over the hump.
Just like the Texans, the Jags have been going thru this rebuilding and “putting the pieces” together for several years now and we havent quite been able to get over the hump…so be patient because it appears that the Texans will be over the hump in a shorter amount of time than the Jags. I personally love the extreme rivalry between our two teams, as it makes for good football games. I hope this rivalry continues over the years and becomes similar to a Redskins/Cowboys type of thing in the future where it gurantees that anytime our teams play we get national billing on TV due to the intensity of it.
In addition, I would also like to show some love to some of the great Texans fans that have dropped some love over at Big Cat Country and have done so with much respect and not whining or crying or being hateful…that is a sign of the great fans here at the Battle Red Blog..and I wanted to return that favor….THANKS!
Go Jags!
Thanks
As much as the Houston media try to make it out that this is a big rivalry, I have much more antipathy for the Tits and the Cowboys than the Jags. Maybe it’s just me, but I know that while I always hate losing, losing to the BESFs and the Cowboys makes me want to drink battery acid.

Thanks, Freek
Best of luck to the Jags this season (except on 12/01/08).

You'd be feeling better
If Martin Jol was still around.

I don't think it's worth a fanpost
So I’ll put it here: Texans sign fullback Cecil Sapp. I’ll give you one guess as to where he played last year.
Slaton
Is it just me or is Steve Slaton the best running back the Texans ever had. And I’m a big fan but they need to learn how to draft better overall
by TexanFanFromTheStart on Oct 2, 2008 7:58 PM CDT reply actions
He's good
But we should wait at least til the end of this season to make that claim. Domanick Williams was very good when he was healthy.
True
Davis was damn good. What ever happen to him? It’s like he fell of the face of the earth.
