Eric Winston's Putting Down Roots In H-Town
On the eve of his team taking Heinz Field to begin the 2008 season, Matt Schaub is definitely flashing that goofy smile today, because he knows that Smithiak just made his life a whole lot easier for the next few years by giving him the protection he needs every snap. How, you ask? By locking up a franchise right tackle, that's how.
PFT is reporting that Eric Winston has signed a five (5) year extension for $30,000,000.00, $10,000,000.00 of which is guaranteed. The Gaping Void that once existed on the right side of the Texans' OL is now going to be a strength until at least 2013. Another brilliant move by Smithiak.

a couple of funny thoughts about this news
I was amazed that PFT has reported this before it shows up houstontexans.com or chron.com or any other usual source for Texans news.
The other thing I am really surprised about is how close my prediction was.
Numbers that one would expect for Winston’s services should be in the neighborhood of four years and $35 million, with $15 million in guarantees. His cap numbers under that type of deal could be something close to this: 2009—$6.5 mil; 2010—$8 mil; 2011—$9.75 mil; 2012—$10.75 mil.
This deal leaves him as a free agent (Pro Bowler?) at 29, which would be a great age for another big payday.
I was amazed at how close the actual money and length of deal were. Guess all that “GMing” in Madden pays off. lol.
