Open Game Day Thread: Houston v. Pittsburgh
Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers, Sep 7, 2008 12:00 PM CDT
I'm ecstatic to report that I'm typing this from the Steel City, getting ready to watch your Houston Texans tangle with the Steelers in a few short hours. How did I manage to get myself to Pittsburgh for the season opener, you ask? Relatively easily. The good buddy (a native of Somerset, Pennsylvania) I referred to here made me a wager before last season began. He swore up and down that Ben Roethlisberger would finish in the Top Five QBs in the NFL for the following four (4) categories: (1) Wins, (2) Passing Yards, (3) QB Rating, and (4) TDs. I was not a believer, and thus a wager was born: If Big Ben finished in the Top Five for all of the aforementioned categories, I would purchase his ticket to HOU-PIT. If Roethlisberger did not, my friend would buy my ticket to HOU-PIT. Lo and behold, I won; candy from a baby. Consequently, I'm typing this entry from beautiful Pittsburgh, PA (which I'll have much more to say about in my Post-Game Breakdown).
Until then, let's kick 2008 off with all of the pomp and circumstance it deserves. Your Houston Texans face the unenviable task of opening their season by defeating a team that damn near never loses at home. But we keep the faith. With that in mind, leave your pre-game, in-game, and post-game thoughts, observations, and heresy in the Comments below. Most importantly...GO TEXANS!

Deep Steel Blue in the Steel City
Did anyone else have trouble sleeping last night?
Finally the day is here!
Tim…have a Primanti’s and a Yuengling for me.

Three hours!
Three hours to kick off! Three hours! Oh sweet merciful Durga – football is finally here again.
To memorialize my deja vu
I saw the Texans QB (I think it was the Schaub, not sure about that tho) in his end zone flipping the ball underhanded to Slaton at the 7 who ran to the 40ish, then fumbled. AJ was blocking downfield and recovered.
Take that for what its worth. I wish I saw the scoreboard at the time!
Healthy and Turnover free 2008-09, and we win 11!
sticking pins in the doll
We reject the evil that is se7ens….(smell of a boiling cauldren drifts across the room)
uh..yep that'll work
you were a little more direct than I was……kills flame on the gas stove, and pulls pins out of ken doll….yea se7ens what he said.
Well...
you got two things right at least. you didn’t argue my point and you capitalized Steelers (did leave off the s, though). now as to the rest of your statement…..did you come up with it all by yourself or did you have help on it. i only ask becasue its so original and creative.
I'm in -
And I’m out. I’m gonna be out for an hour or so… gonna take the kids to the park – cuz lord knows Daddy ain’t gonna be paying one lick of attention to the family once they get this party started.
Be back in a few. Definitely in time for gameday.

Decisions decision
Do I use the picture of Mario sacking cutler? Mario crushing DeAngelo Williams? Mario abusing Reggie Bush?
For such a bust, he’s got a lot of monster pictures.
Oh but Cutler...
The expression on his face is priceless.

David Anderson promoted to 4th Wide out
poor Jacoby. he has more big play potential but Anderson was more consistent.

Game Day
I’ve been rocking Battle Red up and down the streets in Norway all day. It gets strange looks, but who cares…..fuggin Eurotrash hippies all over the place.
Anywho, as far as I’m concerned this is the Texans 1st Sunday night game…..mainly because I’m 7 hours ahead of CST.
Special thanks to 1Tex for continuing to rock tits on a daily basis.
PS...
Someone better be posting some decent play-by-play, so that I can at least have some idea of what’s going on. Muchas gracias.
Slingbox is god.
Speaking of – you’ve been rocking it for a while, right 1Tex? Any suggestions on how to keep it running as smoothly as possible but still getting some quality? I definitely have a bit of trouble watching sporting events.

Hey I see it
as good as Johnnie Walker Red allows…but if you go to the top left and hit Player, then hit sling player options, then go to whichever action your system works in the best. Low , Med or High action.
Rocked the Carr jersey the other day
Had a Dutch guy tell me “Carr sucks – go Cowboys!” I was so dumbfounded I had no idea how to respond.

Inactives via PFT
From Michael Fabiano of NFL.com, the Week One inactive players for the Texans-Steelers game:
Texans inactives: FS Dominique Barber, LB Xavier Adibi, G Kasey Studdard, OT Rashard Butler, DT Tim Bulman, DE Earl Cochran, DT Frank Okam, DB Eugene Wilson.
Steelers inactives: WR Limas Sweed, S Anthony Smith, RB Gary Russell, TE Sean McHugh, LB Bruce Davis, OT Tony Hunt, DE Orpheus Roye.
Wow, bfd, you are a hunk of a man and I want to make sweet love to you
Not pleased about Zgonina over Okam or Kalu over Cochran. Downright pisses me off, in fact.
Salaam looks like the backup at both tackles
Butler is inactive and there were only 4 tackles on the roster I think

the Metric System kicks ass
The beers here are sold in 0.5 Liter cans, which is about 17 ounces (16.90701 if you ask an engineer). So I now vote for the metric system, if for only this reason.
OK…so…..13 more minutes to kill……Solitare rules…..
Euro mini-fridge
The capacity of my fridge is apparently 16 mini-cans. Amstel 8-pack? Oh you crazy Euros! What will you think of next?

Here 'til Friday
I’ll be swinging through the Amsterdam airport early Friday morning.
Also, I found it very interesting a few nights ago that Heineken on tap actually tastes pretty good here. I always find it to have a skunky quality in the States.
Very true
The Heineken on tap is actually really good. So is the Amstel for that matter – and it’s as cheap as our rough stuff on tap back home.
Though the Dutch obsession with having two fingers of foam at the top is killing me. That’s precious beer I could be drinking.

Overtones
This game has overtones of last year’s Carolina game…
Meaning, no one gave us a shot to win (the Panthers were picked by more than a few to go deep into the playoffs), and we stepped up and popped them in the mouth.
The one thing that Steelers have in spades is experience….

I'll never call for Sage over Schaub
why? because I want Schaub to either prove he can be the guy or prove he’s not the guy. I think he needs a whole season at least to make a proper evaluation.
If you remember in the cowboy pre-season game he was rattled easily in the first quarter but then recovered and had a good game. he needs to step up and be a leader right here.

i did notice that
…..That guy has a lot to prove in my mind. I won’t go any further, but just sayin. He needs to show some mental as well as physical toughness

But our secondary seems to suck. As does our qb.

offensive key to second half:
Contain pittsburgh’s pass rush. Most of it has been blitzing by LBs; we need to get a body on them (i’m looking at you, vonta).
Our D looked much better once pitt got their 21, but is still cause for concern.
