2009 Expectations
2009 will be Kubiak's fourth season under the Texans. So far every season he's been "on schedule", up until this year, some can argue. What do you expect from 2009?
By "on schedule", I mean the "schedule" that Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak have set for this team. 2006 was transitioning into "his" team, and trying to instill a winning attitude. He did that, overhauling an extremely underwhelming roster and improving from 2-14 to 6-10. 2007 continued the roster overhaul, with the goal to play meaningful games in December. He did that, highlighted by bringing in Matt Schaub and going 8-8. The expectations for 2008 however, were to contend for a playoff spot.
Many things were to blame for this seasons shortcomings--hurricane Ike, a brutal schedule, that drunk driving bastard Jared Allen, Richie Smith's pathetic excuse for a defense, the Rosencopter, and turnovers. But the team, while finishing 8-8, looked like they took a step forward on offense. Bottom line, however, is that the Texans barely contended for a playoff spot and ultimately came up just a bit short.
So what do you expect for 2009? Would you be upset if we finish 8-8 again but make the playoffs? How about 10-6 but just miss out due to our competitive division? More importantly, perhaps, is this question: What justifies Kubiak keeping his job for 2010? Playoffs? Or an improved record? Or simply improved play, regardless of record or January games?

My expectations, personally.....
Plain and simple: PROGRESS. Defense needs to improve quickly and visibly in almost every aspect (just improve, not necessarily be “lights out”). Offense needs to improve in the red zone. Special teams needs a punt returner that doesn’t play hot potato with the ball.
Record-wise, we need a winning season. Going 8-8 and making the playoffs (a ridiculous pipe dream in our division) would be nice, but wouldn’t show any real progress. 9-7 without playoffs is acceptable to me, but it wouldn’t be really satisfying. 10-6 would do the trick.
And, as a whole, we need to do a better job of beating the teams we’re supposed to beat and competing with the ones to whom we’re underdogs. Forget the whole “playing to the level of our competition” shit. Beat the fucking Raiders!

Good topic for discussion, but I think it is difficult to quantify in terms of a win total
I pretty much echo what Big TexBD says:
1) We need to be better in the red zone on offense. Put up more points, not just rack up yards.
2) We need to be much better on defense. I don’t think any Texans fans can see us being any worse than we were for the1st half of last year. 2nd half showed promise, so we need to build on that and be better from the get-go next year.
3) We need to be more consistent, especially on the road. Like BTBD said, beat the teams we are supposed to beat.
4) If we win 10 and still do not make the playoffs then that to me will be enough. If we go 10-6, that means we will be in the playoff hunt until the last 2 weeks at a minimum. I would rather make the playoffs with less than 10 wins but that doesn’t seem likely in our division.

I think these are tough, but fair expectations:
1 – A .500 record on the road. Saying they should finish over .500 is too much of a stretch. They’re just SUCH a bad road team, that I think right at .500 is realistic.
2 – Undefeated at home against the AFC South. We’re already a very good home team – now it’s time to become a great one. We were 6-2 at home this year, and I’m pretty sure last year as well. I really think 8-0 is a realistic expectation for 2009, but I would take 7-1 and RUN LIKE HELL with it.
3 – Develop an identity on defense. I’ve seen that mentioned elsewhere, and I think it’s a very succinct way to get across all the things we want to accomplish on defense.
4 – Push the running game from where it is now (better than average-to-good) to very good – maybe top 8 in the league.
Is that just too pie in the sky?

Forget the details
I demand a playoff victory.
We have one of the best offenses in the league and are only a couple of players away from having a good, though probably not great defense. It seems like we Houston fans are soooo used to underperformances by our teams that we’ve blinded ourselves from what we’ll have for next year.
(1) a significantly easier schedule. No opening four game gauntlet of death against playoff teams.
(2) a top 5 offense with Steve Slaton and Andre Johnson, the two players responsible for #1 and #2 most yards in the AFC (hat tip, Chris). And Steve Slaton is going to be starting the whole season this time.
(3) a defense with stars like Mario, Demeco, and Dunta and players who still have tremendous potential in Okoye, Bennet, Adibi, and Molden. If we find ONE good player in coverage, be it a CB or a FS, and ONE good player to increase pressure, be it DLine or LB, we’ll finally have a defense that doesn’t drag down our offense. That’s all I ask.
If NOLA could make it the 2007 NFC championship on the backs of their offense, why cant we?

Or...
If Arizona can make it to the NFC Championship, why can’t we rule the world?!

One of the great things about the NFL is that every year a couple of teams
make quantum leaps in success. This year it was Miami, Atlanta and Arizona. Next year no reason to think it can’t be the Texans.

That wouldn't be a quantum leap
The Texans have been .500 for two years. It would be incremental improvement.
Which I am rooting for.
When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.

Maybe it stated that rather poorly
I did not necessarily mean the delta regular season win total, but overall success. Miami won 10 more games in ‘08 vs ’07, Atlanta 7 more. Arizona only 1 more but due to their unexpected playoff success arguably has had the biggest quantum leap in success. We probably wont be able to 9-7, like the Cards did and make the playoffs, and it would really suck to go 11-5 and be hosed like NE, but if we can go 10-6 or better and win just one playoff game that would be what I consider a quantum leap in success. To replicate what Arizona has just done would be (Romespeak) phenomenal.
Now let’s do it.

If We Went 10-6 And Missed The Playoffs...
I’d throw a parade. Sure, missing the playoffs with ten wins would blow, but still…10 wins is 10 wins is 10 wins is a franchise record.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

yes, and
aside from 0-6 in our division and 10-0 against everyone else, we can’t really control anything except our win total.
So Kubiak will have done his job if this team goes 10-6 next year, playoffs or not.
Now if we DO make the playoffs, I want the Tits and Boys to NOT make the playoffs, and we get at least one playoff win. Kubiak gets a 10 year extension at that point.
Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.

Our schedule and expectations
Home:
Titans – W
Niners – W
Colts – W
Seahawks – W
Jags – W
Jets – W
Pats – W
Raiders – W
Away
Tits – W
Bills – L
Colts – L
Rams – W
Jags – W
Cards – L
Dolphins – W
Bengals – W
That puts us at 13-3. That should make the playoffs.
I may be a tad optimistic. But those are teams we should beat.
Please draft some defensive stars for the next DC.
