I see talent on this roster. Don’t know who to blame anymore, I’m leaning towards the coaching staff at this point.

Kyle Shamaham

obviously channeling his mentor Greg Davis. Unacceptable play calling in short yardage = run into the backsides of the O-line, over and over. Disgusting! Feces!

Running in the middle against Dockett is not a good decision. Freaking Chris Brown, the shortage back who fucks everything up when hes needed.

This is a throwing team

so when you’ve got three shots from the one to score a game-tying TD, the focus should be passing. We don’t have powerful RBs, and we don’t have an O-Line that’s big enough to trust with a goal line, straight ahead run.

My new favorite phrase...

“We suck again!”

Given our W-L-W-L pattern, it’s amusing to hear it used every other week. Can we change the BRB motto? I’m starting to buy into Smithiak less and less, so it seems slightly more relevant.

Mediocre

I think what sucks the most about the texans is that while they are always mediocre, teams like Miami, Atlanta, Cincinnati, San Francisco, and Denver make changes and get dramatically better. The texans are still the texans…I dont think Kubiak will get fired unless they have a 6 win or less season…I have a feeling they will miss the playoffs, but get hot at the end and kubiak stays and we ARE MEDIOCRE AGAIN NEXT YEAR!

2nd heartbreaker of the year

And it’s just been 5 games!

Just convert on short yardage situations and we would have won the game. Why is the running game so 1-dimensional and predictable? We’ve been passing the ball so well you’d think we’d at least see a couple of draw plays to Slaton.

by D.thorn on Oct 11, 2009 6:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe we should start looking into the trade market

I say let’s call up Kansas City & trade for Jackie Battle, probably for Chris Brown & some draft picks

by The Night Owl on Oct 11, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

the loss was on the offense today

but not wholly on Schaub. 4/13 on 3rd down is NOT going to cut it in the NFL, especially against an offensive team like the Cards. perfect example was the 3 and out near the end of the half that Arizona converted into 7 points.

by Longhorn Lumboo on Oct 11, 2009 7:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe..

At least the defense is looking better...

Considering the secondary is banged up. If the D plays consistently like that then we win more games. Shut out the Cardinal’s O in the 2nd half!

by D.thorn on Oct 11, 2009 7:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Defense was better, but playcalling needs improvement

Especially in goal line situations. Maybe use Slaton or Moats in short yardage more & spread the defense out some

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

I liked the way Pollard looked.

13 tackles in 2 games so far.

by WarWolf on Oct 12, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The WORST play call...

was on first down before the pick-six. The offense had been moving the ball through the air effortlessly for the entire half. And with a 1st and 10 with about 4 min left in their own territory, Shanahan calls an off tackle run to Slaton that (SHOCKINGLY) nets a 4-yard loss. This sets up a situation where you put yourself in a 2nd & 14, then 3rd & long, and Schaub makes a bonehead throw. If you’re going to run the ball in that situation, why not a draw? Why not a screen? I’m pretty sure we were past the fucking point of establishing the goddamn smash-mouth running attack. This is a passing team. Period. It works. Just fucking go with it for chrissakes!!!

by -Jay on Oct 11, 2009 7:36 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

I know what you mean. The run plays were so obvious. It’s more often than not, tight formation with the fullback. Why not run less obvious run plays in pass formations? Call more SCREEN PLAYS for SLATON.

by D.thorn on Oct 11, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt!

Kubiak’s stubborness in trying to force the run is costing us games. That, and Matt Schaub’s weak arm. Hey #8, you don’t put enough zip on the ball to throw it across the field in this league.

I like Kubiak, and I like Schaub, but they both need to perform better if this team is going to have a winning season.

It’s fitting that Schaub is due a big roster bonus at the end of this season. If the ship is not righted he, Kubiak, and Rick Smith may all be looking for jobs.

Mediocrity cannot be accepted again.

by carsonwayne on Oct 11, 2009 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Schaub is one of the main reasons we lost today

but this will be one of his poorest performances of the year, and it was pretty good.

If he’s on the field for 16 games, he’ll be in the pro-bowl this year.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Oct 11, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Everyone assumes

our offense is a juggernaut, and we can flip it on/off and score whenever we want.

For anyone who said in the Jax game and this game to “use the time off the clock” and waste downs by running it inside the ten, I say this is a terrible idea. We have two examples of why we should take EVERY opportunity to score we can get. We have been in this situation twice, and both times came up a yard short. Get the TD. I’d LOVE to be in a position of kicking off with 1 min left in EITHER one of these games. Don’t waste ANY plays inside the 20, EVER! We’re not that good.

We’re not good enough to shut down the offense for the second half of the Raiders game, and magically turn it back on the next game.

Playcalling is to blame, with Schaub a close second. Bush and the defense were incredible today. They played like a playoff-caliber defense against a very good offense.

The last score at the end of the first half was on the offense for giving it back too quickly.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Oct 11, 2009 7:45 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Agree on the playcalling. But I’d put Chris Brown as the #2 to blame over Schaub.

Schaub had 2 terrible plays that costed the game, but not too terrible to overcome. And if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have caught up in the first place.

Chris Brown has just been playing terrible all season. His stat line for this game: 4 car for 2 yds. He hadn’t been used all game, and couldn’t even make the extra push for a freaking yard!

Actually it’s the coaches fault for even putting him in that situation. He’s no good, they should just drop him.

by D.thorn on Oct 11, 2009 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Schaub was off

for nearly 3 quarters, then add the two bad plays on the last two drives.

Yes, he was good for the 4th quarter, and led some awesome drives, but he gets credit and blame.

Chris doesn’t have potential to play up to. He’s not good.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Oct 11, 2009 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Schaub completed 35 of 50 passes on the game for nearly 400 yards, two TDs and the one interception. He struggled in the first half, as did the entire offense, but bottom line is if not for Schaub’s play yesterday we’d never have been in the game at the end in order for it to be blown so it baffles me that people list him as the player most responsible for the loss. He had a couple bad throws at the end of the game, but 15 incompletions in 50 attempts is pretty good overall, especially considering something like 10 of those incompletions came in the first half. Did he have a bad game because of a couple bad plays?

If so, maybe Andre Johnson also had a bad game for dropping that 3rd down pass in the third quarter that would have been an ez conversion. Who’s to say that drive wouldn’t have ended in points which would have taken alot of pressure off the Texans last two drives. Maybe Reeves had a bad game for giving up that one long pass simply from not turning his head and locating the ball, even though overall he improved our secondary greatly. The point is the offense ran like what, 70 plays or so.., in those 70 odd plays there were many “bad plays” by various players, take any one of those mistakes away and who knows what the outcome would have been.

Take away Schaub’s interception and we possibly win the game for sure, but the same could be said about any mistake or bad play made in the game. Would we have played as well as we did had Andre Johnson or Reeves not been in the game? Certainly not, and neither would we have been in position to potentially win the game late had it not been for Schaub.

I have Sirius XM

And was in Dallas looking at houses during the game, so no TV- SiriusXM has all the games but you get the home team feed. Listening to comments like “Wonder why Andre Johnson isn’t in here” (the whole game) “Just don’t understand the playcalling there…have to thank them for that after the game” “Schaub’s is not throwing those out routes well. Bet we intercept one soon” or their complete, utter amazement, awe, and sheer gratefulness in response to Houston’s playcalling on the 2 and 1 3 and 1 and 4 and 1 scenario at the end of the game really hurt my soul. They were just so baffled and happy all at once, it was the polar opposite of what I felt.

I had to work today

I DVR’d the game and just got thru finding out the result. What a miserable fucking way to try to go to sleep at night, it is no fucking wonder that we always have to play the noon game on Sunday. We would do the fans a horrible injustice making them view this garbage in prime time.

The Texans deserved to lose. People will bash on Chris Brown, Schaub, and the coaching staff but in the end we played like little bitches to a team that isn’t all that great. Arizona may have made the SuperBowl last year but losing to them proves without a shadow of a doubt that this football team is light years away from taking the next step. I expect to see coaching staff changes and alot of player movement in the offseason.

Every season as a Texans fan is hard but this one has been considerably more heartbreaking that any other. This team has really came out and played like shit, I almost don’t want to watch anymore… and that is saying alot because I live and die football.

I love my Texans and my football but it makes me hate my life, LOL!

I probably should

but I don’t feel that bad about today.

We weren’t an NFL team in the first half, and I was a lot more pissed at halftime than I was at the end of the game. We battled, and deserved to actually win a game where we were dominated for the first two quarters.

But the biggest thing for me is we have a playoff caliber defense, for two weeks in a row. And this was a good offense.

That bodes well for the rest of the year. Not 11-5, but our defense could conceivably win us 9 with better offensive play calling. I trust Kubes to figure that disaster out by next week.

ourmain problem… inside the ten we still have NO go to play. what happenned to the play action drag to OD that worked vs the TITS??? or even the KW pitch play? or anything to Casey?? we’ve gotta get more creative with our playcalling in the red zone. brown left brown right won’t get it done. still… good job D. u hope to win, but if u lose, id rather lose 28-21 as opposed to 21-0. way 2 show heart Texans… lets get it back 2 500 next week.

good and bad things

good thing: defense was shit in first half but was AMAZING in the second half just giving up 7 points.

bad thing: obviously, the extremely poor play calling at the goal line. what we should have done was a toss to slaton because we have had success on every toss play this year and on most inside hand offs we run into a dog pile. shanahan is a talented offensive coordinator and it was one bad series of 4 plays, otherwise, give the man some credit, we scored 21 unanswered points and made a hell of a comeback.

one more thing, CHRIS BROWN IS NOT A FUCKING GOAL LINE BACK. we need to sign tj duckett, he is on FA, give him a 1 year deal, cut brown and see what duckett does at the goal line.

not the defense. Reeves looked like he will help the secondary. And Glover hits like Dunta used to before he quit caring. I like the more physical nature of the defense this year. Goaline offense has been awful so far this year. I’m proud of the team for not giving up and folding on the road. But it still hurts all the same.

Schaub lost this game.

We had that TD in the endzone and he decides to do a little fairy leap and made that ball UN-CATCHABLE. 371 was nice but that was because we were down so much. All Matt S. had to do was lob the ball into the endzone. Its really horrible that we cannot create shit while we’re in the redzone. I’m at a loss right now.

I think I'm done.

I like to think I’ve been excessively optimistic for the most part, mostly in defense of Kubiak/Rick Smith/Schaub, but this might be my breaking point. Forget the play-calling, decision-making, or in-game managing. There are teams who execute when the game is on the line, and there are teams that shit the bed. The Texans, evidently, are the latter, and that comes from the coaches. I’m willing to bet that if you had put the Colts team into the last five minutes of the Jacksonville and Arizona games, they’d be 4-1 right now.

For instance, when your offense has been rolling all half with the hurry-up, why do you suddenly call a time out and slow down your momentum? This shows your team that you’re afraid. It shows that you don’t think you can match up to the other team on the goal-line and make the play you need to make.

I don’t want this team to tank it just so Kubiak gets fired. I was a Broncos fan several years ago, so I’d love to see him succeed. But if I were Bob McNair and the season were over right now, I wouldn’t bring him back. When you play well in spurts like we do, it tells me that we have the talent to win consistently, but we lack the coaching. Anyways, no more waking up at 4:00 a.m. to watch games overseas for me. Sucks to lose another season so early.

That's a bit extreme

Last year we were winning all kinds of games with the pressure on (Miami, Green Bay, even the drive to get us to OT against Jacksonville).

I still think we’re an 8-8 team. Every time we win a game, I get all optimistic and convince myself we’ll actually go 9-7. Every time we lose a game, I get all pessimistic and convince myself that we’ll actually go 7-9.

That’s about where we are.

Then goodbye and good riddance. This team is 2-3 not 0-5. If you want to give up that easily then go, but its not like the team has given up, they played their fucking hearts out yesterday in the second half. It sucks they lost, but if they can play 2 halfs of football like the 2nd half yesterday they will make the playoffs.

Well, all indications so far are that they cannot. If they start proving that they can, people will believe, but all that leaves us right now is hope, and hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

This is true. There are a lot of reasons to be angry and upset and to be extremely pessimistic. What bothers me is someone saying they are completely quiting on the season already. I would understand more if we go out and lose next week. But to quite at 2-3 to me is embarrassing.

false hope

really does hurt, that’s the thing. i don’t know, i was so fucking frustrated with the loss, but what can we do about it now? just gotta move on and play well next game.

I told this to my friends

but I am convinced the Texans are the most disappointing team in the NFL. They’re absolute masters at getting our hopes up, then punching us in the groin. When they went down 21-0, I just assumed it was typical Texans and wrote off the game…then they decided to get back in it, and then rip out hearts out with the fail-line offense. To top it off, we never go out the gate winning so nobody gives a care about us.

Also, I’m consistently disappointing how we just hate starting well. We can’t do it in any season, and we can’t do it any game. How about we start well and maintain a lead, instead of hobbling around for 15-30 minutes then realizing that we’re a halfway decent team.

by Dragongem on Oct 12, 2009 9:17 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

inconsistent yes

most disappointing team, no.

If we played like we did against the Jets every game, I’d give you that, but we’re good every other week.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

Most teams are not "pure" scheme oriented by design

I feel like the zone concept with lighter quicker (easier to sign) linemen are great in the open field, but in the red zone where everything is compacted (where there is no second level, and it becomes exponentially more difficult to score via pass, a team MUST have the personnel to smash the ball on its will (with no creativity) for 1 SINGLE YARD!! Even the most dominant teams in history have been forced to win at smashball with the season on the line.

Without a nimble QB, or a couple go-to (short yardage) BIGBOY OLinemen, the deck is stacked against us in tight quarters/short-yardage situations. I think this was the RIGHT playcall sequence with the WRONG personnel…two-three specialists could be drafted (in low rounds) or picked up off the wire to solve this problem. And if Schuab poses a liability in this situation (which I think he does although I am a fan of his) you put Grossman in to serve as an additional sneak/running threat.

I hope this game hammers home this point all the way up the chain! This “pure” concept has been my biggest problem with this team for two years now…I thought Caldwell was a step in the right direction, but he’s not out there and not enough all by himself. I HOPE THIS CASE-IN-POINT (AND ALL THSE CAPITAL LETTERS) WAKES THEM UP!

by Smittybaby on Oct 12, 2009 9:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I just dont understand

why we start off every game trying to establish the run. The Saints are a pass-first team and they don’t care if you know it or not because thats what they’re good at AND IT WORKS. Kubiak needs to get it out of his head that we’re a run-first, power running team because we’re not.

Our O-line isn’t build for power running; they’re build to pass-protect and be quick out in open space. Myers is not good enough at run blocking. Caldwell should get some snaps at center to see if he can actually move someone forward.

When it was 2nd and goal at the 1 after the NICE shovel-pass to Slaton I knew we were doomed. Why no QB sneak? Why not spread em out with 4 wide and run a draw? Why not spread em out and throw the screen to AJ again??? We’re too predictable… I knew Brown was gonna get the ball on 4th down and so did Arizona. Pathetic playcalling.

Being down 21-0 at halftime, the Cards knew the Texans HAD to pass to get back in the game and they still couldn’t stop us. Take a hint Kubiak…

The D did their jobs. They gave up 21 points to the Cardinals (the pick-6 isn’t their fault). Thats not bad at all. The offense takes the blame in this one.

by BdoFiFtY81 on Oct 12, 2009 10:10 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

QFT

Especially about the fact that the Cards EXPECTED the Texans to throw the football but were unable to stop them. Use the pass to set up the run, and not vice versa, and I bet the Texans will be a lot more consistent since they are playing to their strengths.

Allow me to repeat

The idea that at team needs to establish the run in order to win is pure, unvarnished bullshit.

The Eagles aren't a smash mouth running team.

But they find other ways to get Westbrook involved. If we can’t run, then we should be throwing more screens to utilize the athleticism of our offensive line and get slaton in open space against the defense.

Andre Johnson is a grown ass man. I think he completely out shined Larry F after making it look like Hayes stepped on a land mine when he tried to tackle him on his second TD catch. Quote this if you are down.

the play....

remember back when joe montana had to make a similar play in the superbowl? rolling out, throwing across the body, back on the endzone. he throws that ball almost exactly as schwaub did, only difference? his guy made an unbelievable catch. he saw dressen back there wide open, and if he hesitates another second, a LB or DB makes a play on the ball. i believe he just wanted to get the ball out to him and let him make a play on it. it was a decent effort….

I agree

He didn’t have time to set his feet without the reciever running out of open space, so he made the best throw he could off balance and off his back foot and really was 1 big toe from being a TD.

Poor guy. We should cut him loose and let him sign with a real team. He deserves a ring.

He doesn’t deserve this season after season. I just wish we could take next step with him here, would kill me to see him on another team. Anyone else notice that Quin hits like Cunta used to, before he turned bitch.

2-3 not 0-5 guys

To bail now is ridiculous. Personally I’m excited for next week, if they can bring the intensity they brought yesterday in the second half it should be a good game.

when it was lost

in the first half. the offense looked scared, timid, and totally not ready to play. The defense stiffened up after the first cardinal drive, but they spent the whole half on the field. That is why I blame Schaub and company for this loss. Where is the friggin attitude. Don’t these guys hate to lose? Like Winston said, the plays didn’t much change in the 2nd half, the execution did. I can’t blame Brown for one play. Did anyone see the push that Zona had into our backfield? Earl Campbell in his prime might have made it thru, but I am not sure. I would have liked to have seen that play we used w/Kevin Walter a couple weeks ago where everyone one on defense pinched in, and he took a flip outside. That would have been the play call…or same play, with a pass option to him if run covered.

yup.

they ran a similar play to OD, and it netted at least 12 yds. we should use plays like that more often.
