Greetings from Cincy Jungle (Bengals blog)
Hey fellas. My name is Josh Kirkendall and I run the blog Cincy Jungle -- SB Nation blog for the Cincinnati Bengals. I wanted to swing by and introduce myself, while answering questions that you guys have about the Bengals. I'll be getting some of my crew to swing by to talk about the game this Sunday. If you have questions, bring them to the table and we'll answer as many as we can. Thanks and good luck this Sunday -- not really, but it seems like a nice enough thing to say... :-)

Who knows.
We’ll just blame Mike Brown’s ineptitude.

He was selling meat out of the back of a truck. No, seriously. My buddy has a package of meat signed by him in his freezer.

One reason Boomer's number isn't retired is
He decided to go into television instead of coming back for the 1998 season, I’m sure that pissed off Mike Brown since Boomer’s run at the end of 1997 season was the one bright spot in the previous five years since he was forced out of town for future HOF David Klingler.
But some teams just don’t retire numbers, look at the Raiders no numbers retired.
by St. Esiason on Oct 14, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Munoz' number 78, Esiason's number 7 are two numbers that you'll see on practice jerseys but never on Sundays.
Also Kenny Anderson’s 14. I want to say the same about Tim Krumrie’s 69…you’re unlikely to see any of those four numbers on gameday. The only number the Bengals have officially retired in their history is Bob Johnson’s #54.

wow.
i can’t think of a better QB for that organization….. a “poster boy” if you will. and Munoz is a hall of famer, it’s a shame those guys aren’t recognized.

is this where the season starts to go downhill
a home loss to the vaunted Texans?
by WARDANE33 on Oct 14, 2009 1:48 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
In the case of a loss,
which is honestly unlikely given individual matchups, although stranger things have happened, no. We lost week 1 on the flukiest play that will happen all season and then won 4 in a row due to determinism. When and if the hangover sets in from winning games in the last minute? Who knows?

Cincy Defense
It’s been awfully good so far this season. What’s been the difference? And do you think it can shut down or at least slow down the Texans’ passing game?
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

A Bengals fan perspective
I’ll try to field this one. The main difference has been health and depth. The Bengals finally have a healthy front seven (Odom hurt last year, Rivers out with busted jaw) along with key offseason and draft pickups in Tank Johnson and Rey Maualuga. They’re creating pressure where there was none last year. Also, there was probably a benefit from Zimmer spending the entire offseason picking brains about creating pressure.
Can they shut down the passing game? That’s going to be key, though I think it comes from stopping the run first and/or playing with a lead. The Houston O-line is suspect, and any pressure is going to force Schaub into hot reads and dump passing, which negates Andre’s big play ability to some extent. Our corners have been playing well, defending one-on-one, and our game plans have neutralized big #1 receivers every week. I am not so much a homer that I think the bengals shutout probably the best playmaking receiver in football, but he might have only a so-so day. And if the Houston O-line is porous, Slaton can’t run, and Walter and Daniels can only get short, quick catches and routes because Schaub is running for his life, it’ll be a long day for Houston and most likely a Bengals win.
by rorschach1979 on Oct 14, 2009 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with your points and will supplement them.
Depth is definitely a factor, especially on the defensive line. The addition of Michael Johnson, rookie athlete freak from Georgia Tech, has really ramped up pressure on passing downs. While he doesn’t have a sack, we’re seeing him or Fanene, Odom and Geathers all on the d line at once, and they all know how to wreak havoc in the backfield.
As far as rush defense, we’ve just got more thumpers up the middle. Crocker and Williams can hit. Maualuga can definitely hit. Rivers is a sound tackler, and Domata Peko regularly commands 2 blockers, usually leaving a linebacker unoccupied. I’ve seen the front 7 keep most plays in front of them, and we’ve been less prone to the run this season.
Regarding the pass, this is the Texans’ biggest strength with Johnson, Walter (who I loved as a Bengal) and Daniels. Tight Ends have had some moderate success against us, but I’m sure Zimmer will game plan for a guy as prominently featured as Daniels. He may do some damage, but I’d expect him to occasionally draw bracket coverage from LB/S, while Andre Johnson is doubled on the other side of the field. I think there’s probably enough confidence in these guys to leave corners on an island with Walter and other receivers. They’ve shut down the likes of Holmes, Jennings, Marshall, Mason, and Edwards without much trouble.
I expect a gameplan similar to what Zimmer employed against the Ravens. They like to go over the top, so we took that, and their best play-maker away. I’m sure they’ll game plan hard for Daniels and Johnson (although Johnson is a freak, so we’ll see what happens), and try to make Houston 1-dimensional early.
by jsl413 on Oct 14, 2009 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Our o line is actually quite solid in the passing game as long as you don’t have a kris jenkins sized monster in the middle. Its run blocking that they suck arse at.
by nolander on Oct 14, 2009 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But how do they react to losing both starting guards?
The line is woefully thin now, and you’ll have to shuffle it up in practice this week. You’ll have a rookie in a major role, and you have to expect the Bengals will try to exploit that.
If the pass protection holds up, it’ll most likely be because the Texans try to max-protect to cover their losses. And if they do that, the Bengals will most likely play them like they did the Ravens: rush only 4, scatter the other 7 in coverage.
Even our front 4 got good pressure on Flacco with a “better” O-line protecting him. And as such he had to throw dump passes to Rice and Heap. That makes sense for Houston too (Slaton and Daniels), and so Andre will be running sprints basically. He’ll get involved, but probably not like the Texans want.
by rorschach1979 on Oct 14, 2009 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It won’t be just Caldwell(the aforementioned rookie) it will also be White who has gotten some snaps along with Studdard at left guard. The injury to Briesel is a concern.
Also, to think that all that AJ is going to be doing is sprints ignores his versatility. He is for more then just a deep threat. One way or another he will get the ball in his hands.
by nolander on Oct 14, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No doubt, no doubt
That’s why I don’t agree with other Bengals fans that we’ll be pitching a shutout against another #1 receiver.
He’s too good – way better than any #1 we’ve yet faced. And he is more versatile. But if he’s catching WR screens, maybe running a reverse, or running quick slants to get the ball, it means he’s not that “home-run” threat as reliably. That’s what scares most teams, and that’s what the Texans want to see too.
I’d be happy if we just stop the long ball when it comes to AJ. The rest I think can take care of itself. No quick TD’s means Houston is less likely to outscore us, or at least leave us close enough to pull off another of these crazy comebacks.
by rorschach1979 on Oct 14, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would say that that the O-Line may be better than expected.
Antoine Caldwell was an extremely good lineman in college and has played very well in practice. Will he do well in game? We will find out sunday, but having met him this last weekend, I can say that he is at least brimming with confidence and feels that he is ready to step up.
To be honest, I have been hoping for a shakeup of the o-line to see if it can jump start the run game. It will be interesting to see how it shapes up.

Congrats
On the seasonso far. I picked the broncos and bengals as my two sleepers if you will.
How has Roy been at safety. He was a stud at OU and I wanted to throw up when he ended up on the cowturds.
We don’t know which team will show up, but I will promise first class entertainment, whether that be taking your best player out in the most important play of the game or possibly one of our o linemen tackling our own rb
by AllenOU on Oct 14, 2009 5:17 PM CDT via mobile reply actions 0 recs
Roy Williams has been pretty good.
He hasn’t been elite, but he’s been better than what we had, even if he can’t cover. He’s a thumper in the running game, and an intimidating presence for receivers that cross the field into his waiting arms.
by jsl413 on Oct 14, 2009 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll add something here
I think Roy has helped eliminate some of the big run and short pass plays the Bengals were giving up last year. When backs have gotten to the second level he has been right there to bring them down or atleast slow them up until the cavalry arrived. His hard hitting ability like you said makes this defense a group of “enforcers” now that teams actually fear instead of blowing them off.
by St. Esiason on Oct 14, 2009 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He actually had a great moment in the cover game that helped lead us to victory against the Steelers too.
Just a beautiful play on the ball. Probably a case of “right place/right time,” but it was something to behold. :)
by A Pragmatic Bengals Fan on Oct 15, 2009 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
How is Rey
Maualuga (sp?) playing? I was a big fan around draft time, and thought you all got a steal picking him up in the third. Our USC linebacker is coverage deficient but an excellent tackler who seems to be improving, wondering what your experience has been like.
by JimboTexan on Oct 14, 2009 5:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Rey Maualuga is kinda like your USC LB.
He flies to the ball and hits like a monster truck… but sometimes there are people between him and the ball, and he abandons his assignment because he sees the ballcarrier and forgets to contain in lieu of chasing down the strange brown ball.
He’s definitely been an asset, though, especially in the running game. I don’t think he sees as many snaps on passing downs, where Keith Rivers, Dhani Jones, and backups like Brandon Johnson and Rashard Jeanty (when healthy) are more experienced.
by jsl413 on Oct 14, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The kid can play
Everything said above is true, though I haven’t seen him miss many assignments. I also think he’s picking up some defensive leadership, actually helping with calling assignments on the defense. That’s a welcome sign, because there’s a better than 50/50 shot he becomes the future MLB.
He’s not the best in pass protection, but he’s not a huge liability either. He’s pretty quick to the ball and a sure tackler, though he’s better used blitzing than in coverage.
He was a huge steal in the draft – someone the Bengals frankly admitted they considered taking in the middle of the 1st, had they traded down. His intensity, tackling, and hard hitting abilities will be welcome for many years.

Is that a whiff of arrogance I'm getting?
From Bengals fans, no less???
I find it hard to think that, if the records were reversed, folks around here would think of it as nothing but complete and total luck or opponent failure.
Maybe I’m wrong, but… wow. I guess chest-thumping pride is something we lowly Texans fans have yet to experience… but are shown how it’s done by the Bengals?

Not arrogance . . .
Just pride. We finally have a team worth feeling good about. And I stress the word team, because that’s been missing. These guys finally are playing with their heads up and finding ways to win on both sides of the ball, when in past years, they found ways to lose.
Houston is a good team, and whoa be to the team (Bengals or otherwise) that overlooks them. They have talent on both sides of the ball, but just haven’t pulled together as a team yet. In that sense, I look at your team and see many similarities with the Bengals of the past 5 years: all the promise in the world, but you never know what shows up on Sunday.

That's the thing.
We could go in to cinci, dominate the whole game, then play the miners next week and let coffee go for 200 and lose by 21.
We could also lose and then dominate the niners and then get blown out by buffalo
it’s either near perfect or flat out embarassing, no grey area with this team

i was thinking the same thing. I’m not sure why you (Bengals fans) think the Texans will a push over and this is a game your “supposed to dominate/win”. I think you will be in for a surprise on Sunday. And when you lose don’t feel bad about your team b/c “they lost to the Texans” we are better than you think so don’t take it too hard. 24-14 Texans.

We don't think it's a push-over game.
But we think we’re a playoff contender, we’ve beaten the AFC-championship game teams on the road and at home, and we think we should be able to beat a Houston team with some holes at home.

bengals fan here
This is a very close matchup. Andre Johnson is beast, he gives me nightmares. In all seriousness, if the Texans put Andre in the slot more than normal, he will have a Huge Day! Our nickle CB is FS Chris Crocker (and he cant cover) or Rookie CB Morgan Trent. If Houston cant pick up the blitz and protect Schaub, then the Texans have a big advantage in the pass game. Just put Johnson in the slot. Our 2 outside CBs are playing shutdown.
When the Bengals have the ball, i think Cincy will have an advantage in the passing game. Hopefully newly signed Darnell Bing plays on sunday. He cant cover for his life. But if not, im not worried about anybody but Dunta Robinson. although Jaques Reeves has suprised me. I thought he was absolute garbage, but he’s ok. I also have nightmares about Super Mario. Our LT is huge and strong, but not so agile. It will be a fun matchup.
I think this game may turn into a shootout.

You have it backwords. Dunta has been pretty much terrible this. Reeves is actually able to run with any cb, his problem has always been what happens after the qb throws the ball(doesn’t do a good job of finding the ball). He played great last week.

And one of his strengths, tackling, seems to have disappeared, as well.
Reeves looked real good in his return last week. He makes a huge difference. Now, if we can start Reeves on one side and Quin on the other, our CBs might not embarrass themselves. For long.

it was 50-50
Half of the fans wanted to resign him, the other half wasnt so sure. I was on the side of letting him go. Durring the off season the Bengals offered contracts to Derrick Ward and Cedric Benson. Ward chose the Bucs so the Bengals went with Benson. it really has worked out for the best. Cedric has run really hard, and the offensive line has created holes for him to run. He has suprised us all, he looks like he could be our feature back for the next 2-3 years. Hopeully the Bengals dont give him too many cariies and he breaks down like Rudi Johnson did. But thats in the future. Right now Benson is doing exactly what we need him to do.

needs to prioritize winning ahead of having character guys at every spot on the roster. Bringing in a couple of troubled guys with lots of talent would’nt destroy the team chemistry we have never been able to build anyway.
