Early Playoff Picture
Division Leaders:
Denver
Indy
New England
Cincinnati
Wildcard:
Pittsburgh
Baltimore
NY Jets
Jacksonville
Houston
Best case scenerio in week 7 matchups. Obviously assuming the texans manage to win. Jacksonville is on a bye, so we would jump them by half a game. The Jets play at Oakland riding a 3 game losing streak. I dont see them losing there. Baltimore is on a bye, so we could pass them. The Steelers host the undefeated Vikings. If the Viking manage to win in Pittsburgh, we would have the same record, but the Steelers would win the tiebreaker. Cincy hosts the Bears at home in a tough game. The Pats have a fairly easy game on the road against the winless Buccs. The 2-3 Chargers roll into KC, probably a win there. 2-3 Miami hosts the undefeated Saints, lets call that a loss. So the wildcard would look like this with a Steeler, Cincy, Miami loss:
Wildcard:
NY Jets
Pittsburgh
Houston
Baltimore
Jacksonville
San Diego
So while the 49ers are an out of conference game, this is a big game because we have the opportunity to jump half a game on 2 wildcard teams this week in Jacksonville and Baltimore. Its going to be important to stay ahead of Jacksonville heading into our rematch as they hold a head to head tiebreaker on us. Baltimore still has to play the Steelers twice, so that works in our favor. So despite our early season troubles, we are still in the hunt. Now would be a good time for them to get some momentum going.

Great post Goat!
The Steelers have only lost 2 games right? If the Steelers lose this week how are they still ahead of us – is that based on conference wins?

yes the Steelers would have a 3-1 conference win advantage over our 3-2.

I hate Brown
He not a “Big back” he is tall but his frame is long and skinny, and he runs high so he has no leverage and sure isn’t quick. He is a waste of a roster spot, if you need a big back use vonta or casey, but Brown is horrible get rid of the guy. I would even take Ron (I’m running up vonta’s butt because I might find a coke) Dayne, over him.

while I dont like Brown either as a ‘power back’, the running game woes are mostly on the offensive line.

Can we please stop blaming Chris Brown so much??
Our entire run game has been worse this year than last. A huge part of the running game obviously is blocking and our run blocking has been horrible this year. Yes Chris Brown is our “big back” but its not his fault he is our big back. He is a good running back as he showed last week with 45 yards on 9 carries, which was better than Stevie, and all of his carries were in the end of the game when Cincy knew we were running the ball. CB did have a 1yd TD run against the Cards, lest we forget. If, Schaub didnt miss the 3rd down throw to Dreessen, Brown would have never had the 4th down run against the Cards.
He definitely deserves some blame for the fumble against Jax, but Slaton has had his problems fumbling too. IMO the problem with the running game, and more specifically the short yardage running game, is the o-line.

Agreed
and thanks for giving Brown credit for this last game- he had a good game and came in in the 4th Q and did what he was supposed to do. He also got that 3rd and 1 in the 4th when it looked like they stopped him for a loss he twisted his way out of it and picked up the first down – that was a huge play for us. He did that on his own because once again the oline got no push on a 3rd and short.
For goal line situations why don’t we put Leach and Moats in the backfield and direct snap to Moats and let leach pick him up and shot put him over the goal line. I could see that working.

I love this idea
moats would fly like 10 yards in the are.
can you make a Field Goal by throwing him through the goal posts?

It actually looked
like a Bengal LB pushed Brown forward for that extra yardage. Would be nice to watch game in HD but CBS isn’t in HD out here in the country, fuckin sucks. But Brown has taken most of the blame for short yardage failures when the line was equally to blame. They were sucessful on the short yardage plays this week, liked the QB sneak call.

I don't hate brown completely
I actualy liked what he did when he had the ball against Cincy. I just don’t think he is a “Big back” he is just a taller and slightly slower version of slaton. Not a pound it in kind of guy, his build is great if he was a TE (like we need more of them). I just think he is not needed and we could use the roster spot somewhere else.

So if we dont have Brown
You would be comfortable with Ryan Moats getting 5-10 carries a game?? I agree that Brown is not a big back but thats not his fault. We knew going into the offseason that we needed to get better in short yardage situations, but we did nothing to improve there. We drafted Caldwell and Casey to possibly help block, but we didnt do anything about getting a “big back.” Hindsight is 20/20 but wouldnt it be nice to have Cedric Benson on our roster right about now?? Smithiak failed in the offseason in terms of acquiring a big back and that, along with poor line play, has cost us the chance to take two games into OT.
If we cut Brown, where would you want that roster spot to go to? We would be incredibly thin at RB w/o Brown.

Sure I would be fine with Moats
Let him have some time on the field and then give a few more to Vonta too.
Brown isn’t good at short yardage and isn’t fast enough to break it. I think he is just kinda useless.
I think he would be better lined up as a second wide receiver, like the Broncos did with Tony Scheffler last night. Just not a great back

those running plays which would have only TIED those games
…and again not mentioning that only a stupid NFL rule and an unforced fumble by Kerry Collins got us the win in Nashville.
The Texans are 3-3, and they SHOULD be 3-3. THey are what they are.

I know I was calling the Texans a bad team after the Cards game
but they fooled me once again in Cincy and looked so good in most areas that I can no longer call them a bad team. What a difference a week makes. That’s how the NFL is.
Yes they are 3-3, as they should be, but in as good a situation as they could expect to be in. After Baltimore, NY and SD lost this week, there is only one non-division leader with 2 losses; Pittsburgh/Cincy tied at 4-2. The Texans are smack dab in the middle of the wild card race after week 6. How many times have we been able to say that? I like the sound of it.
If we can do as Mario said, and get over the hump on Sunday I like our chances of getting to 10-6 and a shot at a wildcard spot. This week’s game will speak volumes about where we are as a team.

Team
has a high ceiling and overall is a quality team. The Preparation and game-planning (Coaching) is what shoots us in the foot.

Did anyone notice any reasons
that we could run ball early against Bengals, but failed in 2nd half for the most part? I saw White making some good plays when we had the early success, then half the Bengals d-line left the game with injuries and we couldn’t run any more.

Yeah we were impossibly flat vs the Jets
even when we scored the fluke defensive TD, we didn’t stand a chance. That was as bad a home game performance since we lost to Ccleveland to end the 2004 season at 7-9. A prelude to the 2-14 collapse of 2005.
