Brian Cushing Named AFC Defensive Player of The Week

Some more love for The Texans rookie sensation.

Brian Cushing is the first rookie to win the honors so far this season and the first Texans defensive player since Mario Williams in 2007. He earned the honors by making nine tackles, forcing two fumbles and snagging a game clinching interception against Cincinnati last Sunday.

Cushing has changed the intensity of the Texans defense and is making an early case for Defensive rookie of the year. Let's hope this is his first of many achievements with the team.

Quick Note:  Brian Cushing has also been nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week as well.  To vote for him, here's the link.  - Jake

Nice to see Cushing getting league wide attention

Noticed that Clay Matthews is nominated also. Compare the pics of him and Cushing. Who looks like he is more likely to tear off your head?

And Rey Maualuga is doing pretty good, too. How the hell did USC ever give up a touchdown?

well...

when your offense takes like 30 seconds to score….
sometimes the D is apt to give up a touch.

Last year's USC team

Is exhibit A as to why a national championship playoff is necessary. One loss and they’re out of the hunt.

That team was sick talented.

Texas was out with one loss last year

and the talk this year is that if Florida and Alabama both go undefeated to the SEC championship game, that a rematch for the title is likely if Texas loses a game. After last year Texas knows there is no margin for error, either go undefeated or be left on the outside looking in.

Exhibit B for a long overdue friggin playoff system.

I totally understand your point

but a re-match will not happen unless everybody else has 2 losses and Bama and Florida are still undefeated when they meet and then its still very unlikely. People wont want to see a rematch and the voters will drop whoever loses that SEC champ game below a 1 loss USC or an undefeated Iowa/Cincy/Boise

But yeah, Texas knows it cant fuck up this year.

by TexasHoosier on Oct 21, 2009 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Boise State is at #3

The voters will find a way to keep them out of the NC. There’s no way in hell they’ll allow a non-BCS school into the National Championship game. They’ll try to push them down & hope Cincy or Iowa is sitting there to leap frog Boise. Worse case scenario would be Boise at #3, TCU at #4, Texas, Iowa, & Cincy too far back to jump them, & either Bama or Florida completely destroying the other in the SEC Championship so a rematch can’t be legitimate. That’s the scenario I’m hoping will happen. That’s what it will take to make them consider a playoff system so they would make it harder for a mid-major to make it to the NC Game. If you want a college football playoff, then get behind Boise State & TCU.

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

by The Night Owl on Oct 21, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree about Boise being in the NC

I know it is very unlikely, but if Boise goes undefeated and everybody else has at least one loss, they could go. While i think a 1 loss Texas, USC, LSU, Miami, or possibly Penn St or GT would go before Boise, if they all lose again the voters would rather see an undefeated Boise over a Bama/Florida rematch. What could happen though is if Bama losses to LSU and then LSU losses to FL in the SEC champ then Bama and Florida could meet in the NC. But Boise does have a small chance to get to the NC.

by TexasHoosier on Oct 22, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boise being in the NC?

It’s just not gonna happen?

As long as NCAA is following this broken system, coaches and voters aren’t just gonna vote them in.

Unless...

Your school name is LSU and you get to play for the title with 2 losses….

I figured he's probably win this award...

It’s hard to argue for anyone else given the plays he produced. Cushing is already my favorite player on the team. On defense he’s the man to watch. Unlike the rest of the team, the man even knows how to get a safety. I just hope he doesn’t get hurt because he is such a difference maker. I hope he can keep it up this year.

Great points, all

I will say, I looked at the Pepsi Rookie of the week thing and there were some great games by some rooks this past week! Cush is the most outstanding, but I have to tip my cap to all of the nominees.

Also, I heard an interview with Cush today and he sat out practice today for a sore foot which has been bothering him, but he said it is just another day of rest for it and if the game was today, he’d be on the field.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

I think Kubes

did the same for last week and he still played well against the bengals. Hopefully he does the same thing against the niners.

Well deserved honor

Cushing has been awesome for this team. To think that this guy was so hated by the masses, missed all of preseason, and is still this good… damn I hope he just keeps getting better! Ryans and Cushing could be great combo for years to come.

Don't wanna jinx it, but...

Sounds a little like when Mario showed up, no?

by beefy on Oct 22, 2009 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Fans were bitching about how Mario got blocked easily, appeared to take plays off as rumored when he was at N.C. State. People complained that he didn’t get any sacks and cried over VY and RB. Mario didn’t force fumbles, get safeties or rip down game-ending interceptions on the road to win games. Mario didn’t raise the overall level of defensive play or demonstrate the same instincts. Then there was the whole plantar fasciitis thing. I don’t hear any crying over not taking someone else, do you?

Damn, dude...

In no way was my comment meant to be abrasive.
And yes, almost everyone was wanting someone else. From Malcolm Jenkins to Michael Johnson. I don’t recall too many at all in the Cush Camp.
That’s more the part I was comparing, but whatever. I’m glad you got that out of your system.

He didn't say you were abrasive

He said you were wrong to compare the draft/play of Cushing to the draft/play of Mario. He was right. Why do you have to turn it into a personal dig? Can’t talk to you, man!

I wasn't comparing the draft/play, though...

And was pointing more towards the attitude some fans had about the pick, and Smithiak’s decision being right in the end.
Sorry that wasn’t more clearly stated.

Didn’t mean to ruffle anyone’s piss-flaps…

and one them stated that Cushing was the best rookie and Schaub was the most underrated offensive in the NFL.

I warmed to the Cushing pick pretty quick

But before the draft even I thought we’d be better off going with Mathews if we picked a LB because I bought into all the “experts” saying he had “bad hips” and would be a liability in coverage and knew that the Texans wanted to get faster and quicker at the LB position. Boy were they wrong about that, Cushing may not be the best coverage LB in the world, but no SLB is… for his position and little experience in the league, he actually has been very respectable when dropping into coverage.

by Bryan72076 on Oct 22, 2009 12:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

"experts" saying he had "bad hips" and would be a liability in coverage

He’s still a liability in coverage. It’s just covered up by his good play and stats.

If people were only to understand the responsibilities of an SLB. They wouldn’t see Cushing in the same light.

by Jordann on Oct 22, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Was listening to ND Kalu's interview of Mario on 610 tonight

One of the things that Mario commented on is that Cushing goes 100% all the time, on every play and sometimes that means he is going 100% in the wrong place, but when he is going in the right direction, look out. I think Mario added something like, as he learns and catches on to where he needs to be through coaching and experience he is only going to get better, because of his 100% intensity. I thought that was a pretty fair assessment of what Cushing has been giving the team. He isn’t always in the right spot, but the guy freakin’ goes!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

But the two players have absolutely nothing in common...

Just so we’re clear.

by beefy on Oct 23, 2009 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah that seems pretty fair.

It explains his huge performances and his blown assignments perfectly.

It’ll only get better as the season goes.
