Owen Daniels - Top tight end in AFC ?

                                                                           The Top 4

Player Team G Rec Yds Yds/G Lng Avg TDs 20+ 40+

Antonio Gates SD 6 34 474 79.0 37 13.9 2 8 0

I know I'm a homer, so just wanted to get some other opinions about who has been the best tight end in the AFC this season.  And I am just talking about this season, wasn't comparing career stats on these guys.  Colts fans were going to ban me for voicing this argument on their blog, so I decided to make my first fanpost on BRB.

haha CFTHTim i know it will change since this is a texas sight but found it ironic that

as soon as i voted it was even but reading how u stated this if your put this poll and the whole fan post on the colts site you wouldn’t be banned and i actually think it would be interesting for you to put it on all the sites of the people we are comparing and see what the results are. that way you get a broader idea of what people think

GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!

by TheAngelsColts on Oct 26, 2009 7:00 PM CDT reply actions

I think it is going to be interesting...

Come the end of the season, who will be the number one TE? I imagine that not all of them will make the probowl, although I would imagine that they all could make the Playoffs.

Of course, I picked Daniels, but I’d be the first to admit that I have Battle Red tinted glasses.

by distant_texans_fan on Oct 26, 2009 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

yea i think it will be that way for everyone on these sites for the most part but it being put on

4 sites a better chance of posters from other sites sites seeing them and voting and we will get a more accurate idea of the fans thoughts i think

GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!

After I voted honestly for Dallas Clark

the poll was tied at 10 b/t Clark and OD. I wonder if that is people voting honestly or if its been colts fans voting for Clark.

I think each team could

voice a legitimate argument for their tight end. Clark and Daniels are top two for my money.

I think its a real toss up between OD and Clark. Both are like WRs playing the TE position. Gates and Miller arent far behind, but I’d like to see how Miller pans out the rest of the year if that Steeler offense stays pass happy or not.

by DaGoaT on Oct 27, 2009 11:35 AM CDT reply actions

It really is a toss-up between Clark and OD. These numbers are only half the argument as the TE’s blocking should also be considered.

I think the Falcons’ Tony Gonzalez is the best in the NFL, but then it’s neck and neck between Clark and OD. After that, I would consider 49er TE Vernon Davis because that boy is having a tremendous season.

by TexansDC on Oct 27, 2009 12:02 PM CDT reply actions

At least

This is a better argument then Wayne vs AJ. I voted for OD, but right now they are pretty even for the season, clark more ypg but od 2 more tds right now. It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the season pans out.

by nolander on Oct 27, 2009 12:29 PM CDT reply actions

Wanted to highlight their blocking ability as well

but didn’t want to use DYAR or crazy stats to represent it. Not sure how to figure out who the best blocker is of the group.

I can’t speak for anyone other then OD on that, but I know he still can improve his blocking skills.

by nolander on Oct 27, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Gates, he's AJ with another 50 pounds

Miller fits what the Steelers do best – blocks, makes tough yards and catches the ball, wins games. OD and Clark are the same and fit perfectly in the systems they are in – coin flip as to who is best.

But Gates, he gets my vote. IMO to be the best you have to redefine the position and he does that. He makes DBs look like kids when they are covering him and he is too fast and too good a route runner for LBs.

If you don’t game plan for him, he will burn you to the ground. Too bad he’s stuck in SD with the rest of the overrated Bolts.

Alright let's do this right...

1. As already stated by everyone above with a brain, you are NOT going to get unbiased results by polling teams whose tight end is in the polling.
(Ex.: "So-And-So is obviously the best TE in football because he plays for my team and since I am a winner and I only back winners, then by the Transitive Property So-And-So is a winner and is therefore the winner of this poll.")

2. You are not going to get unbiased opinions from teams who are in the same division as any of the candidates in this poll.
(Ex. 1: "I hate So-And-So’s guts because he plays for our division rivals and always makes our defense look like a pack of drunken hillbillies stumbling around in the dark looking for their lost coon-hound ‘Cletus’, therefore, I would sooner set my ass-hair on fire than vote for him.
Ex. 2: "So-And-So, our division rivals TE, regularly beats on us like orphans at a Catholic monastery, and since I know we’re awesome then the only logical explanation is that he is the best fucking TE to ever walk in cleats. He gets my face-saving vote.")

3. You are not going to get an unbiased opinion from inter-division rivals either, such as between the Colts and the Pats or the Steelers and the Pats, for much the same reasons as stated in point #2.
(Ex.: Pats Fan: "Gawd, I hate those douchebag Colts and Stealers! They’s always a takin’ what is rightfully owas’ as the best fans in the facking universe! I would rather stick my cawk in a gawdamn wood-chippa’ than vote for they’ra guy!")

4. You’re not going to get an informed opinion from any NFC fans do to lack of familiarity with the candidates.
(Ex.: NFC Fan #1: "Hey, who do you think the best TE in the AFC is, buddy?"
NFC Fan #2: "What the hell is the AFC?")

Conclusion: Poll the remaining AFC East teams (Bills, Jets, Dolphins). They have little-to-no dog in this fight and would be the closest thing you’re going to get to an unbiased and informed opinion. Hell, we’ll even give you the Pats. Go ahead and ask ‘em.
To make it truly fair, though, you need to change that Coltsbanishment crap in the body.
Unless, that is, you’re afraid of a fair fight?

All valid points

And unlike Brad at Stampede Blue, no one here will delete your comments and ban you for debating the topic. Weird, huh?

So you're saying that now I have to think of some witty Sig that will be applicable across all the SBN sites? Go TexanHornStroKets!

This is one of topics that is more or less a toss up in my opinion. I vote OD for the sole reason that if a guy on my team is close enough to be in the same conversation then I’m just going to pick him. You can make a case for any of them and not be wrong.

But FO currently has OD as the number one tight end in the NFL.

Unrelated.

I was re-watching the first season of the office. I got to the episode where Dwight was picking the healthcare and it struck me. BigBadBradley acts like Dwight from The Office. Minus the awesomeness of course.

I will say that as the season goes on I will be more willing to use them as a point of reference. The sample size just isn’t great after 6 games. Maybe around week 10.

by nolander on Oct 28, 2009 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed on the sample size

But even with that taken into account, they’re still a better way to gauge a player’s value than traditional stats.

Stats are for LOSERS!

Obviously the ONLY way to know which one is better is to what kind of car they drive. I bet you don’t find THAT little tidbit on your ALLEGED “stats” page.

BTW he actually drives a Black Limited Edition Range River with black chrome rims. I got his autograph on the parking lot of Sam’s Club at Westpark and S. Rice.
He’s a very nice guy and im pretty sure Clark is too.

No, he's got it wrong

Patrick Willis drives a river. The River Styx, that leads to the underworld.

OD just drives a slightly running dry creek.
