Texans/Bills Cross-Blogging with Buffalo Rumblings

Aloha, Battle Red Bloggers.  My name is Brian Galliford, and I'm the lead blogger over at SB Nation's Buffalo Bills affiliate, Buffalo Rumblings.  Yeah, I know, it's a stupid blog name, but at least we can call ourselves "Rumblers" and, if our bosses become curious about the moniker, we can pass it off as a bowel movement or us just being earthquake enthusiasts.  Gross and/or bizarre, but innocent, and certainly not grounds for firing.

I'm fairly certain you guys are aware that your Texans are playing our Bills this week.  Tim will be running a reciprocating FanPost over at Rumblings at some point, so if you care to talk the Texans angle in this matchup, feel free to drop your knowledge over at our blog right alongside him.  This spot is reserved for your questions for me (and any of my readers that feel courageous enough to hop on over here) to answer.

We'll get some basics out of the way right away, though feel free to ask questions in any way you see fit:

~ Ryan Fitzpatrick is starting at QB.  No, he's not scary, but yes, he's won each of his last five NFL starts.
~ Yes, Terrell Owens has stunk this season.  He was late to admit it, but he did admit it.
~ Our offensive line is every synonym of "not good" you can think of.  Mario Williams should get right this week.
~ Matt Schaub had better be perfect on Sunday, because rookie FS Jairus Byrd has 5 INT over our last 3 games.
~ Yes.  Byrd is the word.  And yes, they play that at Ralph Wilson Stadium when Jairus gets a pick. Awesome.
~ We're 3-4, but we're more Oakland than... well, Houston.  Y'all have a clear advantage in this one.  Besides home field.
~ I'll be at the game, right behind the visitor sidelines.  If you want covert pics of Andre Johnson re-inflating his lung on the sidelines between drives by going all intercostal with an antenna he snapped off of a minivan while walking from the bus to the locker room, I can probably hook you up.

If you have other meaningful questions, fire away.  Best of luck this weekend - but damn you for not beating the Jets.  Even we did that.

UPDATE: Here's my FanPost over at Buffalo Rumblings. Be sure to head on over there to contribute your thoughts as well.

Ok, I'll Kick things off with a broad one.

talk about your defense. all areas of it if you would i.e. how is the d-line playing, Linebackers etc. I know Byrd is on a warpath through QB confidence, but what about the other people in secondary? I knew there was some injuries there but i lost track of who. thanks in advance!

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

This would be the “official” cross-pollination post between our blogs, if you will. :)

DL: Kyle Williams has shoulder and knee issues, and it’s unlikely he’ll play. Marcus Stroud is still solid, and I’m sure you’re familiar with the type of player he is. We’re thin at DT. Our ends are pretty average, but pick up hustle sacks on occasion. We’re not great at the point of attack because of personnel and our defensive scheme, which in part explains our No. 32 ranking against the run. Have fun, Steve Slaton.

LB: We’re really, desperately thin here. Paul Posluszny is still struggling with consistency. Keith Ellison is the NFL leader in tackles, but that pretty much means defenses are attacking him – he’s very average athletically and can be exploited. Chris Draft was a guy we signed off of waivers two weeks ago, and he’s already good enough to be our full-time SAM linebacker. Depth is a bunch of inexperienced guys – two of them are rookies.

DB: Donte Whitner probably isn’t going to play this week – he’s got an ankle issue. Bryan Scott does, too, but his chances of playing are good, and as our best safety against the run, that’s huge for our defense. If he goes, he’ll line up next to Byrd. Terrence McGee and Drayton Florence have been outstanding at corner. Chalk some of it up to playing really, spectacularly awful quarterbacks and another part of it up to being so horrendous against the run, but don’t completely discount our No. 10 ranking against the pass, either. We’re vulnerable, but we’re capable of making plays back there, too. My advice to Kubiak: run, run, and run some more. Run until Slaton bleeds from the ears and/or we commit 9 to the box. Had Carolina done that, we’d be 2-5.

Don't take offense at this or anything...

But I wish gonorrhea upon Drayton Florence. Doesn’t have anything to due with thinning out your secondary; it’s personal.

San Diego, actually.

He went helmet-to-helmet on Schaub. On a running play. When Schaub had already handed the ball off and was well out of the play. Result: concussion and out for a game.

Piece. Of. Shit. And our team had absolutely no attitude, so they just stood around and took it.

I’m going to be calling for screen passes to Vonta Leach (our beastly FB) all day long just so I can see him make contact with Florence. It never goes well for opposing DBs when Leach gets the ball.

Yes that was during an INT return, and he cheaply blind sided Matt

and also went helmet to helmet. Wasn’t even penalized on the field, but the league office fined him something like $7500. He should have been suspended for a game.

True, probably why the refs missed it because it was behind the play

which makes it even cheaper if that is possible. Would be nice if one of the O Linemen or Coke Machine gets a chance for a clean shot on Drayton come Sunday. Karma is a bitch, and he’s got it coming.

you bring up a point that I was thinking of as well. Not to discredit the performance of your secondary, but I do wonder how much of the success has been because the last 3 QBs you faced were Derek 2 completion Anderson, Mark the Rook Sanchez, and Jake Delturnover. It brings a very similar comparison to the houston run defense. Everyone outside of houston thinks our run defense sucks because the stats are inflated by the horrible performance in the first 3 games of the season, ignoring the fact that in the last 4 games its been near perfect. Personally I think weather will play a bigger factor on Matt Schaub than the actual secondary.

Don’t forget about Chad Henne, either. He made his pro debut against us. He wasn’t great, but he didn’t turn the ball over, either, and we got absolutely pounded.

Yeah. Schaub is good. Really good this year. He obviously presents a much stiffer challenge for us, and that’s without mentioning Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels. (We’ve really struggled covering tight ends this year, so look for big plays from Daniels.)

Aaron Maybin

I enjoyed your post about how it’s waaaaaaaayyyy too early to call the kid a bust. As a fan of the team that employed Super Mario and listened to many outsiders proclaim him the worst pick in the history of sport, I can certainly sympathize and support the notion that Maybin’s gonna be just fine. Success at DE in the NFL very, very rarely comes overnight.

My question is: What should we expect from Maybin on Sunday? I noted that you said the Bills aren’t lining him up all over the field (which I think is awfully smart and the exact opposite of what the coaches did to Super Mario his rookie season); what do you hope to see from him this week?

I noted that you said the Bills aren’t lining him up all over the field (which I think is awfully smart and the exact opposite of what the coaches did to Super Mario his rookie season)

That’s an interesting take, and one I’ll take back to my readers. I take it you think moving him around stunted his development?

As for your question: you can expect to see Maybin at left end (right end occasionally) on third downs of lengthy distance, as well as on the punt block units (he’s come very close to blocks in the last couple of weeks). He hasn’t had much of a statistical impact yet, and he doesn’t show up as an impact rusher yet, either. You don’t have much to worry about.

Speaking for Tim

I think it did stunt his growth. Defensive lineman take a while to adapt to better offensive lines in the NFL, so if you have a pass rusher, let him do what he knows best; sticking his hand in the dirt and get after the QB. Once he figures that out, then you can get to the more complicated aspects like coverage, moving positions along the D line, etc.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Oct 29, 2009 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The counter-argument to that would be the early-career success of Washington’s Brian Orakpo, who moved to SLB after playing DE at Texas. He’s got 3.5 sacks this season – not great, but pretty stellar for a rookie pass rusher. He’s been a key figure on a Redskins defense that’s pretty damned good, and pretty damned overshadowed by Jim Zorn, Dan Snyder, and the organization’s overall ridiculous ineptitude.

I agree with your take, as well as Tim’s take – let the guy play the position he’s meant to play, even if you sacrifice some production. It sucks a bit that the Bills needed production from its top pick and won’t get it, but we’re better off in the long-term.

I live in D.C.

So I watch a lot of Redskins coverage, and I always look out for Orakpo when I do because I’m a UT fan. Even though he is having a productive year, I feel comfortable saying that he would be even better playing DE. He gets lost in coverage, and I don’t know for sure but I’d say the majority of his sacks have come when he played the “Elephant” position up on the line. Just my take.

You know... for kids.

Yeah – and I haven’t seen any Redskins games this year. Those observations kind of re-inforce the original point – I’m very glad that Jauron and his staff are keeping Maybin at DE.

I'm not discounting what the Bills have done against the past recently...

Well, ok maybe a little. Aside from their games vs the Jets and Panthers, the Bills really haven’t been that spectacular against the pass, and both the Jets and Panthers are run first, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd type of offenses and playing against a defense that’s struggled against the run.

I’m not saying the Bills have a horrible secondary or that Byrd is a terrible player, but I do think that they’re both a little overhyped at the moment due to recent matchups that went in their favor. My thinking is that any defense Byron Leftwich can pass against, so can Matt Schaub.

by Bryan72076 on Oct 29, 2009 12:04 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

both the Jets and Panthers are run first, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd type of offenses and playing against a defense that’s struggled against the run.

That’s typically true, but Mark Sanchez and Jake Delhomme also inexplicably put it up 73 times against us in two games. Delhomme threw it 44 times. Sanchez 29, in a game that wasn’t tied until the fourth quarter. Even while getting gashed against the run, Buffalo somehow managed to get their opponents away from the run. It was odd, and I don’t expect it to continue.

The Leftwich thing was curious, yes, but it’s worth mentioning that we all but completely shut down Drew Brees a week later (16/29, 172 yds, 0 TD). That, coincidentally, was also the first week that Byrd saw significant playing time, and from that point, Buffalo’s been very good defending the pass.

I wonder how much of the lack of a passing game was because they won 27-7 and were never threatened.

Virtually none of it, actually. That game was 10-7 in favor of New Orleans with 10 minutes left to play. Had Buffalo’s offense been able to do anything other than suck royally in that contest, we had a fantastic chance to steal a win from one of the best teams in football. The Saints pulled away in the fourth quarter when they finally realized that Pierre Thomas could run through us like a hot knife through butter. Thomas ran for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to put the game away.

You want dumb, check out Acme Packing Company (the Packers), Hogs Heaven (Redskins) and Music City Miracles (the Titans). Someone, clearly, was doing bumps when they came up with those names.

Acme Packing Company was the name of the Company that founded the Packers. The Redskins team’s of the 80’s O-Lines were widely known as “The Hogs” due to their size and dominance, and the Tits play in Nashville i.e. Music City and have a very well known play called the Music City Miracle on the return vs. the Bills. oh… and Fuck the Titans. but other than that… i think all the names are pretty legit.

If I ever saw Frank Reich in public, I’d give the man a hug. And then another hug, for doing something so great for our city that it still makes folks in your city depressed nearly two decades later. That’s not a slam against your city – I have zero problems with Houston – but it’s a testament to just how great a moment that was in Buffalo sports. And in case you hadn’t noticed, it ain’t exactly all roses to be a Buffalo sports fan, either.

Sometimes it just applies to the conversation.

And they’re very well placed, for example if you ask a question about Dunta or Jared Allen or Beezlebud or the tits. They’re usually answered with “Fuck Dunta”, "Fuck Jared “Cheap shot” Allen", “Fuck Bud Adams”, and “Fuck the Titans”.

Do you miss

Bill Kollar at all? He’s done all right here, though our defensive line is still one or two picks away from being half decent. We very rarely get any pressure with a four man rush.

by JimboTexan on Oct 29, 2009 7:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I do not miss Bill Kollar, and I doubt you’ll find a single Bills fan who disagrees with me. The man was the line coach for some of the least productive Bills defensive lines in team history. It hasn’t gotten much better now that he’s gone, but Bob Sanders – the former Packers D-Coordinator, not the Colts safety – has turned Chris Kelsay into something more than a tackling dummy on Sundays, so he’s a clear upgrade at that particular coaching position over Kollar.

Thanks A lot Brian

Very good points, and it’s not rare to get another team’s blogger that is obnoxiously condescending about the Texans.

Flipping things around a little bit, what aspects of the Texans (offensively or defensively) do you see that are weak and the Bills might try/be able to exploit?

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Oct 29, 2009 8:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Buffalo’s got a fast defense. The Texans have a fast offense, and more importantly, they’ve got a RB in Slaton that does better in space than he does between the tackles. I think they’ll try to get Schaub on the move, get Slaton to the edges, and try to chase more than they try to win matchups in the trenches. Of course, to do so, they’ll need to stack the box early, because Houston would be ridiculously stupid to not try to run against our defense. But Houston’s bread and butter is more finesse than it is smash mouth, and if the Bills are smart, they’ll try to bait Houston into screens and passes as opposed to lining up and running it right up the gut.

Be careful what you wish for...

regarding screens and passes to Slaton.

Being fast will not get a defender past a 2nd-level-blocking Duane Brown.

Eep.

You’re making me feel pretty uncomfortable about this match-up. Unless a light suddenly goes on/all of our interior linemen gain fifteen pounds of muscle before the game, I still don’t see us being able to run it up the middle. And fast defenses negate our real only strength in the running game: cutbacks and runs to the outside.

Question: how do you think your defense handles screen passes? The Texans have employed tons lately in lieu of a running game, with pretty great results (particularly in the red-zone). Slaton sees plenty, and they’ve even gotten Andre Johnson involved lately.

by Nashmeister on Oct 29, 2009 9:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ironically, despite the strength of our defense being speed, we struggle with pretty much any and all misdirection plays. The struggle isn’t in defending them, it’s in diagnosing them – we’re routinely out of position in the box, and as a result, chunks of yardage are surrendered before we can chase the play down.

Cutback runs are our Achilles’ heel. Our DEs really struggle to recognize screens, though our tackles are getting better at it, Stroud in particular – he bats down a lot of throws. I get the feeling that if y’all have been running them a lot, they’ll be noticeable on tape, and Perry Fewell, our D-Coordinator, has put together some thumping good game plans this season.

by Jake on Oct 29, 2009 9:14 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s definitely not a coincidence. Buffalo’s coaching staff is hell-bent on creating game plans that play to their players’ strengths, something that previous offensive coordinator Turk Schonert refused to do (which is why he was fired). Fitzpatrick has a stronger arm and is more decisive than Edwards right now, so we’re seeing more slant calls – and that’s why Evans is getting more involved.

Whats the word on your run game?

Yall are 15th in average yards per game and 20th in average/rush but only have 1 rushing TD.

Are you satisfied with the run game and what do you think is the biggest problem with it? OL? RBs? Play calling? Teams stacking the box?

by TexasHoosier on Oct 29, 2009 10:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Can't sustain drives

To better illustrate that point, consider this nugget….last week was the first time the Bills had a 1st and goal all season…..

The run game has struggled for the most part. Take out the game against Tampa when anybody could have ran for 218 yards, and the Bills would average 94 yards per game and an atrocious 3.4 ypa.

The problem is poor blocking first and foremost. It’s been pretty bad for much of the season. The playcalling and play design lacks creativity and does the running game no favors. The team had success earlier in the season with outside runs and the occasional misdirection and trap plays. We haven’t seen many of those lately.

Fight Song

It haunts my dreams. If memory serves, the Texans unveiled it at the beginning of the 2003 season after hearing people complain about the Clay Walker jam. But the fight song was so bad that people actually wrote and called en masse to say that they preferred Clay Walker. Lesser of two evils, I guess.

- Those picks were at The Meadowlands and Bank of America Stadium. I’ll defer to anybody randomly visiting this blog who was at either of those games. From what I could tell, the weather was NOT a factor in Carolina, but was a big factor in New York.

- Is there a player to be feared in Houston’s secondary? I mean no offense, but I watched Alex Smith tear that group apart last week. I guess that makes the most feared player in Houston’s secondary Ryan Fitzpatrick.

yet, Orton was a proven winner in Chi, even if his stats were mediocre. He was a young QB, it might be safe to say he is flourishing behind one of the top 3 O lines in the league, a very impressive young offensive mind in their Head Coach, and some very good weapons. Plus the defense is keeping the ball away from other teams…so orton is certainly benefitting.

Or

When you consider that Schuab is good for one or two stupid throws a game.

by nolander on Oct 30, 2009 9:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya but that's given. I just assume Schaub is going to throw one pick a game.

Not sure what weather report Cushing’s looking at, but right now, it’s supposed to be 47 degrees and party cloudy on Sunday in Orchard Park. 20% chance of precipitation.

Ha – even if that were the case, there’s still only a 20% chance of “water.” Do they teach faulty math at USC too? :)

well…….it is possible for it to snow at 50 degrees. It obviously would be very strange – but as long as the upper levels of the atmosphere are cold enough the snow would form there (how it works anyways) – fall and if it got through and didn’t melt that quickly you could see it snow at 50 degrees – it’d be wet and slushy. but it could happen – although very unlikely

not to break the string

I have posted the previous 2 weeks in the cross comments between the 2 teams pre-game blogs and we have won. Yes, I am why we won. Well maybe not, but I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t make a comment this week and we lost…Wind down below 10 mph on forecast now and partly sunny skies. I am thinking this bodes well to be able to run or pass now. I would like to see Matt put up 3 via the air, and Slaton get 2 rushing TD’S to boot. All due respect to Buffalo, you guys are classy fans, I am just wishing here, definitely not bragging or saying this will happen, it is simply my Nov 1 wish.
