Open Game Day Thread: Oakland v. Houston
Oakland Raiders at Houston Texans, Oct 4, 2009 12:00 PM CDT
I choose not to think about the possibility that your Houston Texans drop to 1-3 today. I suggest everyone follow my lead, blocking the horrifying inadequacy of the Houston defense thus far out of your mind entirely. Let's think positive. If there ever was a time to get back on track, it's against a team led by a QB who has evinced comparisons to David Carr as a busted first overall draft pick.
Thus, leave your pre-game, in-game, and post-game praise, disgust, and everything in between in the Comments below. GO TEXANS!

Game thoughts
Before I return to more manual labor…
1. I think Bush will plan around their run, thus, we’ll be loading up the box all game.
2. We should be thankful Chaz Schilens is still out. He could single-handedly kill us if he were available today, especially since he’s got 8" on McCain.
3. Schaub will be pressured much more than he was against BE-SFs and Jags. Luckily, the rush will be inconsistent, allowing him time to pick apart the Raiders secondary, as good as they are.
Score: Texans 34, Raiders 20
Post game, will hear homages to how much the D has turned the corner. However. we’ll still give up 425 yards, but a couple of clutch picks by Wilson and Dunta will seal the game. Well, the picks won’t be so much “clutch” as they’ll be “gimmes.”
Also, I’ve enjoyed the input from the Raiders fans this week. Good luck, y’all!
Note to self: Insert something witty here.

Me too. I just wish I was sure that was a good thing.

I’m pretty excited to see what Bernard Pollard can do when he has pretty much no responsibility in coverage.
Same.
Although as long as we have no hopes for our SS to be able to cover in any way whatsoever, why not just start Adibi or Bentley at SS and stick him in the box?
Thought about it...
We had Adibi bulk up a ton after we drafted him. I think if he’s closer to his draft weight, we might’ve considered something like this.

letz GO.

The Texans...
Really to win this game big, although I would take a W in any fashion, they need to dominate a game and this there chance.
GO TEXANS!!!!
This is the year.......
not for nothing but...
JaMarcus makes David Carr look good (remember, Carr at least once led the league in completion percentage – albeit nothing more than 3 yard outs to AJ).
JaMarcus is the black Ryan Leaf. Or Leaf 2.0 if you must.
Wilson inactive
Inactives, lineup changes for Texans-Raiders By Nick Scurfield – Today, 10:26 AM Topic: Team news
Here are the hot-off-the-press inactives and starting lineup changes for the Texans-Raiders game. Kickoff is at noon CT.
Inactives – Texans:
7 QB Dan Orlovsky (3QB)
17 WR Glenn Martinez
26 S Eugene Wilson
28 CB Antwaun Molden
35 CB Jacques Reeves
62 C Antoine Caldwell
87 TE Anthony Hill
97 DT Frank Okam
Starting lineup changes – Texans:
Dominique Barber will start at free safety for Wilson. Bernard Pollard will start at strong safety for John Busing. Glover Quin will start at left cornerback for Fred Bennett.
Notable:
Wilson was not listed on the injury report this week, so I’ll have to find out what happened to him. At corner, it’s the first start of Quin’s career. Rookie corner Brice McCain also is expected to get more playing time this week. Quin, a fourth-round draft pick out of New Mexico, got a lot of playing time in the preseason with Reeves injured and Dunta Robinson not reporting. He has good size (6-0, 203) and showed a nose for the ball during practices throughout the offseason. Pollard is the third player to start at strong safety for the Texans this season, following Dominique Barber and Busing. He was a second-round pick of the Chiefs in 2006 and signed with the Texans less than two weeks ago.
Inactives – Raiders:
3 QB Charlie Frye (3QB)
34 S Hiram Eugene
76 G Robert Gallery
79 G Paul McQuistan
81 WR Chaz Schilens
83 TE Brandon Myers
84 WR Javon Walker
89 WR Nick Miller
Starting lineup changes – Raiders:
Michael Huff will start at free safety for Eugene.
Wow!
No Wilson or Molden. Quin starting over Bennett?
I think I may follow TexansForever’s lead (I think) and change my score to…..
Houston: 87
Raiders: 73
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
Damnz
With Molden and Martinez out, I can’t even help but think our special teams coverage will suck, too. They might be our best gunners.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
Although he's been burned...
A couple times big, I still like Quinn. He’s adapting to the game rapidly. If he keeps getting the playing time, I can see him really stepping up by the second half of the season.
I would've liked to have seen him start at FS instead of Barber
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
No Eugene Wilson
Terrifying.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Oh dear god.
“Dominique Barber will start at free safety for Wilson.”
I think I’m going to pass on this game. Seriously. The thought of that is fucking terrifying.
Can we not have
Barber in the starting line-up?
This is ridiculous. He’s blown so many plays and allowed touchdowns that shouldn’t have happened. Im down for Fred playing safety since he likes giving the receivers 20 yrd cushions anyways.
Who else would you play there?
Ferguson? Busing?
Like I said in the comments last week, just slap a Matt Stevens jersey on all of them. There have to be some street free agents that can do better.

true
I’d like to see Quin at FS. We know what Barber can give us (though Matt believes he played better last week), but I think Quin has a better chance at being a FS than a CB.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
Agreed on Quin.
He doesn’t have the speed for CB IMO.
But you put your two best DB’s at corner, and apparently the Texans have decided Quin is better than Bennett even if it does mean Barber is out there. Which is sorta dumb, but I’m not surprised in the slightest.

Well ....
Our D could make David carr look like peyton manning
they key today IMHO is WHEN Oakland gets a big play, how we respond to it
I bet Freddie got fingered makes a play today
by AllenOU on Oct 4, 2009 11:03 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Defensively...
Our corners need to grow some balls and come up on the wide outs more. We give them (everybody we’ve played so far) way too much room; even when we flush the QB, he usually has a lot of options because our guys are running around like mad trying to find who they should cover. Way too many blown coverages so far. Better covers, mean more pressure, more sacks and less time for the D on the field.
I’m just saying…
PS Of course, playing close means we could get beat long more as well; especially with new safties. Still, we gotta tighten up if we’re gonna box the running game today.
I just want...
..a home win. Score doesn’t matter 3-0 is as good 31-0. 2-2 After today. that’s all I’m asking for.
"...and if I claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that I don't know". SL
Quick kinda funny story
So, I woke up at 8am so I could go outside and do errands (in the rain) before games started. I’ve moved 4 tons of rock and mulch the last two days, so I’ve got that going for me.
Anyway, as I was finishing, the newly arrived mid-50s lesbian couple was walking their dogs, and one of them had a fucking Peyton Manning shirt on! I walked to the end of the driveway and said, “Ma’am, can you please go to another block while wearing that shirt?” Much like everybody else here, she just laughed at me.
Point being, her partner eventually asked me who my team was, and I said the Texans. They both then got this look of pity on their faces, and the first one said, “You’re having a horrible year this year, but at least your 9.5 point favorites.”
Ugh.

I can't believe I don't feel confident we're going to win.
But its still nice to see Schaub and Dre getting some credit from the national media lately.
shut up jinxy! ( @ tasker all day)

why did we take the ball
after winning the toss?
JaMarcus has a 30% completion percentage.
And take the ball in the second half
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
punt!

and let it all fall apart from there

JaMarcus is 2-2
I told you to start him in fantasy this week.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
Anyone have a feed for this one?
My Hava seems to be taking the day off.
Andre vs Chris Johnson
Is a matchup I am willing to take
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
That makes me a little warm and fuzzy on the inside
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
Side note
On that play where Schaub scrambled out to the left, it looked like no one was on a scramble drill. It just kinda looked like everyone sat on their routes and didn’t try and make anything. Maybe thats just me
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
Amobis coming out party? He ripped through that guard nasty
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
Holy Crap Amobi!!!!!!
Holy crap, we just got another run stop!!!!

The announcer said it best.
We play great for a while and then let a 80 yard td

defense is playing well so far
even if it’s the Raiders
The thing I hate about this game
Is that even if we dominate, it’s nothing to get excited about. I mean, this is the worst offense in the NFL, and the worst QB.
Chris - www.HoustonDiehards.com
by HoustonDiehards on Oct 4, 2009 12:24 PM CDT reply actions
Tough situation.
If we win, it’s because we were supposed to win. If we lose, it’s because we suck balls.
But I don’t really mind. I just want to see this defense get a little swagger. If it takes Oakland to get us going, then so be it.
and in the NFL
a win is a win is a win.
9-7 woulda been SO much better than 8-8 last year.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
this is weird
two 3 and outs, JJ has fielded two punts, and we can’t get in the end zone
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
nice.
d looks pretty good so far! texans up 10-0 right here.

Jesus Christ
We need to win this game handily, because the Raiders O is embarrassingly terrible. Almost as bad as our defense.

This is really getting ridiculous
Slaton is just fumbling at an unbelievable level and not even on plays where it’s at all understandable.
no
I don’t think not being touched, jumping over ur lineman, and not even getting hit in the air is understandable for an NFL running back to be fumbling.
wow.
think raiders o line is a weeee bit nervous?

Eh.
We let them go from outside field-goal range to inside it. We were gifted there by false starts, but there’s nothing all that impressive about that stand.
Moats in for Slaton
I can’t believe I’m saying it – but that’s the right call.

Something about Oakland...
They just shut down those intermediate routes, and those are Schaub’s specialty. Hopefully a little success going deep today gives Schaub and Shanny confidence to do it on the rest of the season.
I'm pretty sure if I sorted our plays by yards gained
Something like 8 or 9 of the Top 10 would be off play-action.
