Post Game Rants and Raves Thread

I didn't get a chance to post a post mortem last night, so here's an open thread to tie us over until we get post-game threads up.

Here's the tease for my post: the most valuable player yesterday (well, aside from JaMarcus Russell) was Antonio Smith.

Nice D finally!

It was nice to see the Defense put together a good game against the rush.

Of course when the QB is Jamarcus Russell, and you aren’t worried about the pass…at all…it is easy to stack the box.

Regardless, the fact that we didn’t give up a big run play IS a big deal.

For those whining about the second half offense, Matt Schaub mentioned this morning on the radio, along with McClain, that Kubiak told them he wanted to get as much film of the run game as possible for evaluation of what is not working there.

So yes they wanted to run out the clock, but they went to the extreme because Kubiak said he believed he had a chance to get a ton of game film on the run to see what the problem is.

the defense needs to take this game and build on it. They need to study the film and really dig down deep, because the Arizona offense is going to test them hard. We will need Reeves and Wilson back to help. Lots of talented WRs on that squad who can go deep on us. I really dont want to see another shootout. Lets hope they come out with some intensity.

There is nothing to complain about.

Nobody should be hatin on the offense this week. All they did was run out the clock and make sure there would be no chance for a Rosencopter. Schaub could have been picked off two or three more times, or could have taken more unecessary hits on pass plays. Koobs was smart to just pound the rock and keep control of the game, and they need all the practice run blocking that they can get.

One change I would have made...

I would have pulled Schaub in the 4th Q. Maybe half way into the Q, but there was no reason to keep him in the entire game. Let Kubiak have game film on Slaton, but there’s always a possibility Schaub might sprain his ankle running out of bounds again.

That's true, but on the otherhand

Every game that Schaub plays all the way through without injury quiets the “injury prone” crowd a little bit more. Had he been taken out, the talk would be that the coaches don’t have faith in his ability to stay healthy, by staying on the field all game they elliminate an opening for the skeptics.

by Bryan72076 on Oct 5, 2009 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

True but,

as long as the skeptics are outside of the organization then it shouldn’t matter. If he would have been injured everyone would be questioning why he was still in the game. I guess it’s a catch-22, but they were already in a conservative mode anyways.

Hey Rivers

If you happen to see this, do you know how many drops the Raiders had yesterday?

Note to self: Insert something witty here.

According to their coach...

I think they said 9. That seems a bit excessive, but then again… They are the fucking Raiders.

Had a pre-existing date

That took precedence over the second half (thankfully mostly garbage time). Haven’t watched the rest of it yet.

Counted 4 in the first half on the first watch.

I was really pissed yesterday at the comments in the 3rd and 4th. Blowing them out and people are whining about the play calling. Jeez we totally need to beat them by 5 scores not 4.

People were booing

at the game after some of those failed third down conversions. Really? We are raping the Raiders all over the field. I think Houston fans have seen such shitty play for so long, they don’t feel right just being happy about a game.

Defense

Most everyone here has confidence that our offense can move the ball, and finally this year, actually push it into the end zone enough for us to win most games, assuming we had a decent defense.

The “decent defense” has been our problem during the first part of last year and this year. So yesterday’s game was a huge building block for the road stretch we have coming up. I think we played a bad offense, but we also didn’t do what we normally do, (including against the Raiders last year) which is make a bad offense look like its loaded with pro bowlers.

The defense could not win yesterday. If they played poorly, they lived up to everyone’s expectations. If they shut them down, like they did, it was “just the Raiders.” Sorry, but Frank Bush gets the game ball. And JaMarcus didn’t have a ton of wild throws. A few, with a few drops, but so did we. The defense played a great game, and I hope they build on that.

The offense obviously played to the opponent. Since we shut it down in the second half, Kubiak felt the need to take the half off. I continue my objection to the timing of the shut down. Way too early for a team that expects to win the game. If we were to shut it down that early against a playoff caliber offense, we could have lost yesterday. Don’t take two series off and see if they catch up, then turn it back on. Try to score on the first two drives of the second half, and get a 3 score lead late in the third/early fourth, then shut it down.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

Hopefully

the defesne takes this game as a confidence booster and steps it up. I hear people that it was only the Raiders. I don’t think we are playoff bound because we beat the joke of a franchise (Raiders). We have a long way to go but I am hopefull.

Cushing, DeMeco, Diles, Smith, Williams, and even Okoye all made plays yesterday. I like our LB’s especially. The secondary is our weakness.

add Pollard to that group that did well yesterday.

I think he earned a starting spot for next weeks game.

I was a little torqed about 2nd half play calling

Not that I wanted them to run up the score but, long drives use alot more clock time than does a 3 and out after 3 staight pass plays. I hate both the “running out the clock by running” and “prevent defence” ideas both are very poor game managment in my book. That said Schaub said this morning that is was mostly to get as much run O on film to help figure things out as they can. Which is acceptable to me.
