Texans @ Bills: Raves and Rants Thread
Wow, what can I say? This game was 10-9, Bills, heading into the 4th quarter, and we win 31-10 in a fairly dominating performance. Oddly, even though we were down, it seemed like we had a great chance all game.
As a side note: respects to the Bills fans, who were fantastic this week. Good luck to y'all the rest of the year.

respect 2 the bills.
but this game was ours to win from the beginning. we shot ourselves in the foot (3 times) but overcame the mistakes, thanks to a defense that has forced 34 (by my count) 3 n outs.
lets pray for OD…
but this is an opportunity for T.H.O.R to make some hay.

Everything Going On
It looks like Miami is gonna beat the Jets. It’s strange, but now we have to root for the Titans. I feel dirty after typing that.
You know... for kids.
Yep
And that’s going to be a really, really tough one.

Moats looked real good
He held onto the ball, and got positive yardage pretty much all the time. He may not have the explosiveness of slaton, but if he can continue to run well and make teams at least respect the run we could be a much more complete offense (scary thought).
R.I.P Jazz #6
Totally man
I know the bills have a pretty bad run defense, but it was nice to see him falling forward on every play.
I don't think it matters
Jags are 3-3 and would be 4-3 if they win, right?

I would like to add one thing that has little to do with the game
But Little Dicky Justice, age 8, wrote possibly his worst article ever this weekend. I won’t link to it, but let me tell you, it was absolutely terrible.
He truly is a dumbass.
When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.
Haha
I almost thought about deconstructing that
Then I remembered that it was lil Dicky and it might not even be in the top 5 dumbest things he’s posted trying to get a rise out of someone

Only
I don’t think he was trying to get a rise out of anyone. I think he truly believes it.

It's a blend of
His UT boner, his desire to get a rise out of the audience, and his sadness that he didn’t get to cover him
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement
but the article kinda explains itself
What he said was, “I don’t have to write good stuff, I have to write stuff people will talk about. The more people talk about my articles, the better. My level of ignorance to reality is not important.”
He just explained the above in Texans drafting VY terms. But thats what he meant.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
Was it the one about
How taking mario over young was a mistake, even today?. Even though Mario is Super and young is rubbish.

Justice lets his UT ego take overhimself. His posts are stupid and really random. I think he is bipolar or something.
He's been doing a good job taking the Astros to task
… I mean I guess he’s always been good on baseball – but it’s best to just totally ignore him on anything else. He uses his blog for nothing more than to get page views and talk down to readers.

The thing is
There is almost ALWAYS something negative to say about the Astros.
And I’m not saying there aren’t negative things that he could write about regarding the Texans. But his choice of topics is mind-boggling.

True, BUT
He spent all season until August talking about how they were a contender.

I don't think he's even good at baseball
He can’t decide whether Drayton is solid or the anti-christ. Depends on who gave him an interview last.

It's his sucking that keeps him in a job
You didn’t think he kept the Chron people satisfied with those crappy “articles”, did you?
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement
He's steady on Drayton, actually.
Sometimes he says it plainly, and sometimes he writes in an absurdly sarcastic tone. Either way, he’s been ragging on Drayton for a couple years at least.
He didn't post my comment, so here it is:
“Average daily circulation at 379 U.S. newspapers plunged 10.6 percent in the April-September period from the same six-month stretch last year, according to figures released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.”
It’s articles such as this troll-worthy trash that are accelerating the death of the traditional media. How much more credibility can you possibly lose? Do the other Section Editors at the chron congratulate you for driving away more readership with this drivel? Newspapers simply don’t understand they’ve got nobody but themselves to blame with the primary driver being poor content.
I guess I’m “lucky” I’m not a woman, or this is the place you’d add some completely inappropriate, misogynistic remark. Or maybe it would be appropriate, seeing as the two best contributors at the chron are “bloggers,” and one of them is a gasp woman.

Meaningless
I swapped emails with Carlton Thompson last year after RJ accused Steph of stalking him, and they do seem to get off on this trolling bullshit. It gets them hits and attention, and that’s all they care about. That they are bleeding subscribers in this game of attrition is meaningless to them.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
I still want McClain gone first.
Bogs down press conferences with boring questions, writes shitty, obvious flavor-of-the-month articles (see the "Moats should be the #1 RB bit), and hops on and off the bandwagon faster than a Boston sports fan.
His published articles are dull and uninformative, and his column lacks any semblance of witty writing and is prone to reactionary whining.
Justice has his bad moments (mostly loyalty-based, for instance the Mario pick and the training staff incident). But over the past couple years, he’s actually had a “give them time and evaluate the whole body of work” approach after they lay an egg instead of calling for heads to roll every time like McClain.

Texans just got a lot of love on CBS...
Shannon Sharpe just said OD was a top 3 TE. Cowher says Andre Johnson is the best WR in the NFL. Shannon says their skill set (QB, WE, TE) are as good as anyone else’s in the NFLs….
Big hype for the Colts-Texans….and someone said “primed for a playoff run.”
Good stuff.

I walked in…it was 10-6, 3 turnovers, and Ryan Moats is taking handoffs!
Wow! I didn’t miss a thing! I saw an awesome team rebound from what would have buried nearly every other team in the NFL! I saw the backup RB have a career day! I saw the team come together with OD sitting out money-time with Thor breaking his cherry today! I saw a team that can overcome bad plays and hold the line on defense and come back on offense! I saw the makings of, dare I say, a PLAYOFF-BOUND team???!!!
Great day to be a Texans fan and see your team go 5 and 3!

We're pretty screwed
I think we’ll find out pretty quick that he’s not just a system TE.
It’s not as devastating as losing AJ or Schaub would be… but it’s pretty tough.

by HoustonDiehards on Nov 1, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions
Pretty much agreed.
I don’t think he’s a system TE, but I do think our system can make very effective TEs. I think Dreesen and Casey will be a slight drop off, but we can get by with it.
Changing the subject slightly, how do you think this affects Owen’s contract negotiations? I think we have to franchise him at the very least.
Depends on adjustments
But I think we have more than enough weapons in the receiving game even without him.
Obviously it’ll still hurt.
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement
I agree
We’ll certainly miss him. But Casey will be able to fill in (WTF happened with A. HIll??) Also JJ, DA and KW will probably find their production increased.

Well, with Slaton likely demoted...
We’ve still gotta get our fumble-fix. It’s Jacoby time.
Poor Kubiak though. If ever there was a coach who hated fumbling, it’s him. Yet at the same time, it’s so damn hard to sit talent like JJ and SS. I hope he sticks to his guns though; the last thing we need against Indy is unnecessary turnovers on the ground.
I imagine that everyone gets bumped up one
Dressen to #1, Casey to #2.
PS Get well soon OD. I hope it isn’t this serious and you’re back up and going soon.
by distant_texans_fan on Nov 1, 2009 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

Because he’s from Rice? He seemed out be out there more, but Dreessen is clearly the #2 TE.

James Casey
TE for the Texans? Played some college ball for Rice.
Or did you mean that other JC, the one from 2000 years ago?
by distant_texans_fan on Nov 1, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Thats an interesting point
Depending on the severity of the injury (please be a minor sprain) OD could be going into his free agency without a contract year season. He’s been great for the Texans but hasnt gotten a whole lot of pub nationally yet and he might be forgotten about come free agency time. I think the Texans will get him at a discount and maybe even during the season, but it all depends on how bad the injury is.
I think you're backwards
No CBA = Texans own rights to OD & DR for another year…no UFA status for them in that situation.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
just thinking now...
Does this mean Texans fans are all against them getting a new CBA agreed upon? It will make it much, much more likely that Ryans and Daniels are Texans for at least another year, although it raises the chances of a lockout in 2011…
As always, it depends
There are a lot of possibilities if either situation plays out. But your statement about a guaranteed OD & DR as Texans in 2010 with no CBA is correct.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
...

by Da babyfacedassassin Meco on Nov 1, 2009 4:30 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Sure. I just dont understand all the man love for the guy.
He is good, but it will be years before he can just jump in an be OD, or even Dreessen, who is a very solid backup for OD.
they can be freaks
but Casey caught two balls, shat himself, and dove to the ground untouched.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
I will admit...
I had a hissy fit and stormed off to a bar called “Bikini’s” after the third turnover. That being said I did grab the table facing one of the TVs showing the Texans and obnoxiously cheered amidst Detroit and Dallas fans. I have to say that I was very impressed with the victory. That’s what good teams do. They overcome bad play and blow the opponent out. That looked like UT vs. Baylor or something.
(and Bikini’s actually rules! The Tex-Mex cheeseburger is fantastic.)
...
Regardless of the TE situation, Lets all just be friends. We beat TO.

Great Defensive Game
The Bills’ 2nd half possessions were 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, 4 and out and then the last drive when we played prevent and Cush got the pick. Total of 77 yards and only 23 on the first 4 drives, a.k.a. the ones that mattered.
P.S. The first half defense was pretty darn good too.
High point
I was impressed with 3 things that I felt stood out.
1. second half D looked very impressive
2. the continued effectiveness of the passing game after the exit of OD
3. What appears to be a actual running game with Moats
Things that still worry me for next week
SECONDARY!!!
You can't fix Dumb
Defense rocks
it needs to be said.
Bush gets credit for second half adjustments. Its becoming a trend.
Yeah, we adjusted last week also. Just in the wrong direction.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
First half D kicked ass too.
Their only points came off of turnovers and a 70-yard kick return. That first TD could have been prevented, but that’s on Dunta, not the scheme.
It was a rough start to the season, and there’s gonna be some more tough games ahead, but Frank Bush has done a pretty fucking good job in my humble opinion.
The Cushing pick that sealed the win
So I watched this play again in slo-mo on the DVR a few times, and here is the breakdown (and why I am so impressed):
Cushing lined up at RDE, and we only had 3 ‘normal’ D-linemen in the game. He then got absolutely blown up in a block by the Left Tackle. And when I say blown up, I mean he rushed towards the QB and then proceeded to get pushed back about 5 yards.
Now, to be honest, this is pretty much what should be expected. We only rushed 4, so there was no overload from us at the line. And any NFL Left Tackle should be able to win the assignment of a 4-3 SLB 99 times out of 100. So I don’t fault Cushing for getting blown up at the line.
What he did next is what did not look anything like an NFL Rookie. He pulled away from the block, shifted to his left, and quickly settled directly in front of the QB, a little more than 5 yards from the LOS. So Fitz’s pre-snap read was destroyed by the fact that our “RDE” on this play was now in the middle of the field to block passing lanes. Which he did.
And all this says nothing of the athleticism and awareness he showed in tipping that ball to himself. It was just a very smart and athletic play overall. And all because he made the right decision shortly after engaging and getting destroyed by the LT. Smart fooseball, people.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
Yeah I touched on that in the game thread
That was some of the most instinctual football play I’ve seen in a Texans uni, well….ever?
- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement
Thx for that instant replay...
Awesome!
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
The Game
so would the be considered a complete game by the defense i mean they did good in the 1st half and hella good in the second
I would have to say Yes
but mainly because Dunta actually wrapped up (mostly) on a tackle
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

Not a big King fan, but man this is too weird
Coach of the Week
Frank Bush, defensive coordinator, Houston.
The Texans, two weeks ago, held the Bengals to 46 second-half yards in Cincinnati; they gave the Bills just 83 yesterday in Buffalo. Bush has added speed and aggression to a defense that too long had been Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans and nine average Joes. There’s a personality to this defense now, a swarming aspect that wasn’t there in the past, and the Texans are a wild card threat because of the chip-on-the-shoulder attitude Bush has instilled.

and this looks like the place.
So I’m listenin to 610 this mornin on the interweb, since I live out of town. Its “Texan Monday” on the morning show, and the first two calls are about the Titans.
They are 1-6. Irrelevant. The Texans are from Houston, have a dog in the hunt, and this is the Texans radio show.
Luckily someone called in and said the same thing I was thinking.
We need to beat VY badly after we beat up on the Colts. End the discussion.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
