Texans @ Bills: Raves and Rants Thread

Wow, what can I say?  This game was 10-9, Bills, heading into the 4th quarter, and we win 31-10 in a fairly dominating performance.  Oddly, even though we were down, it seemed like we had a great chance all game.

As a side note: respects to the Bills fans, who were fantastic this week.  Good luck to y'all the rest of the year.

respect 2 the bills.

but this game was ours to win from the beginning. we shot ourselves in the foot (3 times) but overcame the mistakes, thanks to a defense that has forced 34 (by my count) 3 n outs.
lets pray for OD…
but this is an opportunity for T.H.O.R to make some hay.

Moats looked real good

He held onto the ball, and got positive yardage pretty much all the time. He may not have the explosiveness of slaton, but if he can continue to run well and make teams at least respect the run we could be a much more complete offense (scary thought).

I would like to add one thing that has little to do with the game

But Little Dicky Justice, age 8, wrote possibly his worst article ever this weekend. I won’t link to it, but let me tell you, it was absolutely terrible.

but the article kinda explains itself

What he said was, “I don’t have to write good stuff, I have to write stuff people will talk about. The more people talk about my articles, the better. My level of ignorance to reality is not important.”

He just explained the above in Texans drafting VY terms. But thats what he meant.

The thing is

There is almost ALWAYS something negative to say about the Astros.

And I’m not saying there aren’t negative things that he could write about regarding the Texans. But his choice of topics is mind-boggling.

I still want McClain gone first.

Bogs down press conferences with boring questions, writes shitty, obvious flavor-of-the-month articles (see the "Moats should be the #1 RB bit), and hops on and off the bandwagon faster than a Boston sports fan.

His published articles are dull and uninformative, and his column lacks any semblance of witty writing and is prone to reactionary whining.

Justice has his bad moments (mostly loyalty-based, for instance the Mario pick and the training staff incident). But over the past couple years, he’s actually had a “give them time and evaluate the whole body of work” approach after they lay an egg instead of calling for heads to roll every time like McClain.

by HoustonDiehards on Nov 1, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Pretty much agreed.

I don’t think he’s a system TE, but I do think our system can make very effective TEs. I think Dreesen and Casey will be a slight drop off, but we can get by with it.

Changing the subject slightly, how do you think this affects Owen’s contract negotiations? I think we have to franchise him at the very least.

by MadMartygan on Nov 1, 2009 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

We’ll certainly miss him. But Casey will be able to fill in (WTF happened with A. HIll??) Also JJ, DA and KW will probably find their production increased.

by distant_texans_fan on Nov 1, 2009 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I wonder who's going to get more reps?

Everyone seems to be assuming Casey, but Dreessen’s a pretty damned good TE.

by HoustonDiehards on Nov 1, 2009 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

Well, with Slaton likely demoted...

We’ve still gotta get our fumble-fix. It’s Jacoby time.

Poor Kubiak though. If ever there was a coach who hated fumbling, it’s him. Yet at the same time, it’s so damn hard to sit talent like JJ and SS. I hope he sticks to his guns though; the last thing we need against Indy is unnecessary turnovers on the ground.

by distant_texans_fan on Nov 1, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Thats an interesting point

Depending on the severity of the injury (please be a minor sprain) OD could be going into his free agency without a contract year season. He’s been great for the Texans but hasnt gotten a whole lot of pub nationally yet and he might be forgotten about come free agency time. I think the Texans will get him at a discount and maybe even during the season, but it all depends on how bad the injury is.

by TexasHoosier on Nov 1, 2009 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

I think you're backwards

No CBA = Texans own rights to OD & DR for another year…no UFA status for them in that situation.

by Shake on Nov 1, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

just thinking now...

Does this mean Texans fans are all against them getting a new CBA agreed upon? It will make it much, much more likely that Ryans and Daniels are Texans for at least another year, although it raises the chances of a lockout in 2011…

by killtacular on Nov 1, 2009 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

There are a lot of possibilities if either situation plays out. But your statement about a guaranteed OD & DR as Texans in 2010 with no CBA is correct.

The Bills’ 2nd half possessions were 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, 4 and out and then the last drive when we played prevent and Cush got the pick. Total of 77 yards and only 23 on the first 4 drives, a.k.a. the ones that mattered.

First half D kicked ass too.

Their only points came off of turnovers and a 70-yard kick return. That first TD could have been prevented, but that’s on Dunta, not the scheme.

It was a rough start to the season, and there’s gonna be some more tough games ahead, but Frank Bush has done a pretty fucking good job in my humble opinion.

by Nashmeister on Nov 2, 2009 4:33 AM CST up reply actions

The Cushing pick that sealed the win

So I watched this play again in slo-mo on the DVR a few times, and here is the breakdown (and why I am so impressed):

Cushing lined up at RDE, and we only had 3 ‘normal’ D-linemen in the game. He then got absolutely blown up in a block by the Left Tackle. And when I say blown up, I mean he rushed towards the QB and then proceeded to get pushed back about 5 yards.

Now, to be honest, this is pretty much what should be expected. We only rushed 4, so there was no overload from us at the line. And any NFL Left Tackle should be able to win the assignment of a 4-3 SLB 99 times out of 100. So I don’t fault Cushing for getting blown up at the line.

What he did next is what did not look anything like an NFL Rookie. He pulled away from the block, shifted to his left, and quickly settled directly in front of the QB, a little more than 5 yards from the LOS. So Fitz’s pre-snap read was destroyed by the fact that our “RDE” on this play was now in the middle of the field to block passing lanes. Which he did.

And all this says nothing of the athleticism and awareness he showed in tipping that ball to himself. It was just a very smart and athletic play overall. And all because he made the right decision shortly after engaging and getting destroyed by the LT. Smart fooseball, people.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

3-4

Expects their safeties to cover more I think, and pollard would be a liability in that case.

Not a big King fan, but man this is too weird

Coach of the Week
Frank Bush, defensive coordinator, Houston.
The Texans, two weeks ago, held the Bengals to 46 second-half yards in Cincinnati; they gave the Bills just 83 yesterday in Buffalo. Bush has added speed and aggression to a defense that too long had been Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans and nine average Joes. There’s a personality to this defense now, a swarming aspect that wasn’t there in the past, and the Texans are a wild card threat because of the chip-on-the-shoulder attitude Bush has instilled.

I got a rant

and this looks like the place.

So I’m listenin to 610 this mornin on the interweb, since I live out of town. Its “Texan Monday” on the morning show, and the first two calls are about the Titans.

They are 1-6. Irrelevant. The Texans are from Houston, have a dog in the hunt, and this is the Texans radio show.

Luckily someone called in and said the same thing I was thinking.

We need to beat VY badly after we beat up on the Colts. End the discussion.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

I can't believe they were talking football.

Whenever I turn it on in the morning they are talking about desperate housewives, or concerts they went to 35 years ago.
