Owen Daniels "Likely Done For The Year"

I know everyone is celebrating the win, but today wasn't an all out victory for the Texans.  The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Owen Daniels is likely out for the season with a torn ligament in his knee.  Obviously, this suck for both the Texans and Daniels who was on pace to shatter his career bests in yardage, receptions and touch downs.

I guess Rick Smith has the ability to look like a genius for drafting two tight ends this year.  One way or another, it will be interesting to see what they have in James Casey.  He didn't look phenomenal or bad today, but he'll have a full week with the starters to try and fill OD's shoes against one of the biggest games of the year in Indianapolis.  Sorry to crap in everyone's cereal.

DANG! I just voted him All-Pro, too!!!!

Well, you are right about Rick Smith. We several backup TE’s and Thor is one of them, and right now, we have to feel lucky that he is! The guy has been just short of phenomenal on special teams this year and he has the hands. I don’t expect him to be Owen Daniels but here is his chance to help this team where it needs him!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

And to lose him in a blowout...what a waste.

Still, Dreesen and Casey are very good.

Hate injuries. Having a good season is subject to so much random chance…

Hate to see that Daniels is the real Deal

I made a post about the pro bowl TE’s and how Davis may be number one, but I also had in mind if I said the NFL Daniels would be number 1. TOugh loss, sorry to hear about it.

Jake

Why do you assume Casey will be the #1 over Dreessen?

by HoustonDiehards on Nov 1, 2009 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Dreesen is a nice piece to have on the team

but Casey is far more talented as a receiver even if he doesn’t have the experience. With the amount that this team utilizes the TE in the passing game, it would be pretty shocking for Casey to not be the number 1.

Casey understands getting open a bit better...

But, he looked a little lost after the catch; two left feet sorta thing. Getting reps in practice as the #1 will smooth that out.

I like seeing Casey in the mix though and he played well today.

Just going off what I saw

Casey was in on almost all of the passing plays that I saw after Daniels went down. I wouldn’t be surprised though if it is a mix of the two. I do think that Casey is a better fit to fill what Daniels does in the passing game.

NO!!!

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Owen Daniels’ knee injury will cost him the rest of 2009.

Daniels went down on a first-quarter play in Sunday’s win over the Bills. He appeared dejected on the sideline afterwards, so it’s not surprising to find out that the injury was serious. Joel Dreessen and rookie James Casey will pick up snaps. Daniels was the No. 1 overall fantasy tight end heading into Week 8. Kevin Walter may be the biggest beneficiary of his loss. A big loss...but

The texans have enough weapons to deal with this loss, but crap..it sucks because OD was having a monster season.

We still have Andre, Walter, Jacoby, Slaton, Davis, Dreesen, Casey, David Anderson, and now Moats.
Schaub should still be able to get Td’s, he is just going to have to look somewhere else. Thats what great qb’s in this league do, so lets see if Schaub can do it.

Lets hope OD comes back and has a monster year next season. We should still try hard to keep him. Id pay whatever it takes to keep Demeco and OD, they are great players. Get rid of Dunta, GQ looks like he can step up for next season.

But this is definitely going to be a BIG piece of the negotiation when dealing with his new contract. Same thing with Dunta, gotta prove you can produce for an entire year before Smith will open up the wallet.

by nolander on Nov 1, 2009 6:49 PM CST up reply actions

I think

That’s about right, yeah. But I don’t think Casey blocks very well. So they’ll probably have to rotate the three of them and put all of them in if they want to run a 3 te set. So I think we’ll end up seeing all 3 in some combination. Casey and Joel mostly.

Perhaps, but he isn’t experienced at it as we he didn’t have to block in college.

by grungedave on Nov 1, 2009 5:01 PM CST reply actions

Ok, this may be a naive question,

but what is the difference between a sprain and a torn ligament? Without an MRI how can the trainers be sure it’s a torn ligament and not just a bad sprain? I’m just trying to hold out hope of a misdiagnosis and a healthy OD.

by chrisjay84 on Nov 1, 2009 5:02 PM CST reply actions

again

a torn ligament is a sprain. It’s like saying a broken bone is more than a fracture. And yes they will need the MRI to be sure there are tests that give a pretty good idea as to the degree of the sprain. I don’t know if they do MRIs as a precautionary measure or only if the field tests are bad but to me it’s not a good sign.

by sammocyr on Nov 1, 2009 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

This is tough

Daniels was the athletic TE who kept defenses honest with their coverage. LBs were too slow, so safeties had to account for him and our WRs when running routes. Shanny and Kubes are gonna have to get creative with the passing game, because Casey, although an athletic stud, isn’t the caliber of Daniels. Not yet anyways. I think Casey can develop into a deece TE, but the Texans will need to stretch the field and revert back to some WR screens to keep those defenses honest here on out.

Jacoby Jones and Kevin Walter need to step it up. Casey and Dreesen just need to play steady football and protect the ball when they catch it. Tough, tough loss for the Texans and this might have cost Daniels a lot of $$$, but here’s to a speedy recovery to the best TE in the league.

It's bad...

…but not the end of the world. We have serviceable TEs still. On top of that, TEs don’t win championships and KW’s production did increase when OD went out.

Maybe it means we’ll keep him on the cheap next season too.

Tough break for OD who was having a breakout season (in the national eye), but this shouldn’t hurt the Texans going forward because of the offensive depth.

by TexansDC on Nov 1, 2009 6:28 PM CST reply actions

Look at it this way

The Texans are in playoff contention. They just beat the team that beat the Pats, who shutout the Tits 59-0! This is what playoff teams do. They have players that get hurt, they fill-in the slot with the next guy on the depth chart, they keep winning games. Next week will be a huge, huge test to that theory, but I think this team is operating at it’s best, right now, ever, so now is the time to find out.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

All these reports are

1) From the same “source.” No new information to be given just because it’s on a different website.

2) Educated guesses. There has been no MRI done yet so we all can still hope for the best, that being a severe sprain but one that would allow him to come back in a few weeks.

by chrisjay84 on Nov 1, 2009 7:35 PM CST reply actions

Do you require an MRI to diagnose an ACL tear?

by killtacular on Nov 1, 2009 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

No idea.

No doctor here either. All I’ve heard is speculation regarding his injury so there’s no certain diagnosis yet, which is why I assume they need the MRI.

by chrisjay84 on Nov 1, 2009 8:11 PM CST up reply actions

My only point is

if you don’t need one to diagnose the ACL tear the source could well be accurate, and they’ll just get him the MRI to confirm/be on the safe side/because ODs a professional athlete.

Keep it in perspective. OD is a tough loss....

But you also need to realize that we had ZERO points on the board when SLATON AND OD went out. Every point we scored was without those two in the game.

So while osing OD is rough, the fact is we have the depth and talent at skill positions right now to play through it.

Ok, losing OD sux! Let me say that again in a vain attempt to minimize my doucheiosity a bit, LOSING OD SUCKS! Its bad for him, bad for us, bad for mankind. Period. That’s not the douchy part however…

Now, how will this impact the Texans ability to resign him with a reasonable contract? You know that this injury, coupled with Slaton’s fumbles, really illustrates Smith’s wisdom in not signing folks right after a good stretch. I’ve never been a huge fan of buying high, and have even been bracing for them to trade OD, thinking perhaps the cost of keeping him was going to become prohibitive. Although it didn’t work at all in Dunta’s case (where he lost his f’n mind), coming down to earth can make it much easier to sign guys who you want for the long term. I hope the silver lining on this nasty thunderhead is that we are able to sign OD for a contract that doesn’t destroy our cap position, compromise our ability to score a legit FA or resign our other guys like Walters, Meco and of course most importantly, Orlavsky & the Pep Band.

LOL

It’s a sore subject from them.

Man I wish I wasn’t banned so I can put BigBadBrad and the rest of the colt fans in their place.

Time to make a new SBnation account!

Yea I been letting them know that for weeks.

Tell them Brady is better than Paighten, they will then tell you Brady is a cheater and doesn’t deserve any of his rings.

Did anyone else notice?

Mario didn’t even make the box score. No tackles. No assists. No sacks. Nothing but an unsportsmanlike penalty. And this was the best 4 quarter performance by the defense all year. The craziness just keeps getting crazier.

by LoneSpot on Nov 2, 2009 12:30 PM CST reply actions

The curse

First Dre goes down last week and then OD goes down yesterday and now Super Mario is not on the box score. We really are cursed

by Texan Youngster on Nov 2, 2009 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

If this make us cursed

I will take it all year long.

I suspect his shoulder is bothering him more than he lets on.

If we beat the Colts, I nominate that we sit him the week after the bye.

I didn't break the internet this time.

But it is acting weird, everything italicized, and won’t let me reply to posts.

James Casey is out 3 weeks!

Kubiak just said in his news conference that Casey is out at least until after the bye.

Looks like Joel Dreesen is going to get a ton of reps. Anthony Hill, as well.

Good news is Kubiak is singing the praise of James Casey. Says he played hurt almost the whole game. That’s impressive. Hurry back Thor!

by carsonwayne on Nov 2, 2009 3:50 PM CST reply actions

Ya just heard that.

Looks like they will be working out some tight ends this week and a a fullback.

Amazing

And then there were two.

From the team with more TE’s than we could count, to two on the roster?

Connor Barwin is running routes as we speak.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

Thats not a terrible idea. We need to get him at TE and Mario as our short yardage back.

I would love to

See mario as the reincarnation of the frig. I would make 1.5 yards every time, no more no less

Devastating loss

OD will be missed. My heart goes out to the guy. I wish him the best.

by wasteph on Nov 2, 2009 4:14 PM CST reply actions

Get ready for the cheap shots

on our TE’s the next 2 games.

The tits and the Colts (who have to play us twice in 4 weeks).

There is a strategic benefit to taking out 1/2 of our remaining TE’s.

I know the tits aren’t above it, hopefully the Colts are better than that.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

I’m thinking Sanders Is going to try to hit Dreesen so hard he is going to get injured again.

by nolander on Nov 2, 2009 10:56 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

Nah.

I think Zac Diles and Bob Sanders will come across each others path during pre-game warm ups, shake hands and simultaneously go BOOM together.
