BRB Tailgate For Monday Night Football (11/23/09)
If possible, I'd like to figure out a way for any interested parties to meet up at Reliant before Bud Adams' minions take on your Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. I know that a few out-of-towners (e.g., Jake and MDC, to name a couple) are scheduled to be in attendance for MNF, and several more of us locals will be there as well. In other words, let's tailgate if we can pull it off. The relevant details:
DATE: November 23, 2009.
TIME: Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m., and the parking lots generally open four (4) hours before kickoff. Therefore, let's tentatively say 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
WHERE: A parking lot to be determined at Reliant Stadium. Orange Lot.
WHAT TO BRING: Whatever you want to eat or drink.
As you can see, there's a whole lot that's up in the air. What I'd like everyone to do in the Comments below is (1) let me know if this is something you'd be interested in; (2) let me know if you're planning on attending the game or at least wandering around the parking lots of Reliant Stadium; (3) let me if you've got an existing tailgate on which you'd volunteer to allow us to piggyback (again--it's going to be bring your own food and booze, so the hope is that the only burden an existing tailgate would have to bear is the additional bodies); and/or (4) in the absence of an existing tailgate, let me know if you've got a preferred parking lot for us to meet up.
If this thing gets off the ground, I'll post updates as the specifics begin to take shape. What say the masses?

I am game.
Never tailgated at Reliant so I will need to know the specifics. Do we have to buy a tailgate pass or something? etc….

No, you only need a pass to drive your vehicle into the lot
You can walk into whichever lot you wish.

damn...
So, I didn’t really publicize this, but I kinda almost had a heart attack a couple months ago. I walked in with a 200/130 BP and had a couple lovely days at a local hospital. Unfortunately, I kinda have to take it easy these days. Well, that and I’m old and shit now.
I have some forced vacation coming up, but I’m still afraid to commit to the weekend. The wife seems to be fine with it, which is nice. I’m hopeful I can make it.

Really?
I mean, do you think anyone will be able to get Jordann out from under the table first, so that we will actually have room for a drinking contest?
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

Shake is right.
There’s no getting me out from under the table. You’re gonna have to learn how to make room for your little drinking contest. Or do it before I get there. Whichever you think is more convenient.

I usually don't get to tailgate
because I drive into Houston for the games. But I took off from work that Monday and Tuesday so I can tailgate properly. I have an Orange lot parking pass, so that is where I park, but I can find my way to whatever lot you guys want to meet at.

Found this:
The Houston Texans not only allow tailgating, we encourage it! We want Reliant Stadium to provide the finest tailgating experience in the NFL, so we have established a few guidelines to make your tailgating party great:
•All Parking lots (except for platinum) will open four hours prior to kickoff.
•All parking at Reliant Stadium will require a pre-purchased parking hangtag; you will not be able to buy any additional parking at the gate.
•Parking is first-come, first-served for the first hour; saving spots will not be allowed. If you would like to tailgate near friends, please arrive together.
•Reliant Stadium entrance gates will open 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
•Tailgating will be limited to one 8’x 16’ space for each valid parking hangtag, and must not cross over into the drive lane designated by the blue lines down each aisle.
•RV’s, buses, and oversized vehicles will need to pre-purchase a minimum of two parking spots and need to park in the designated RV areas in each lot.
•If you plan to extend sides or set chairs outside of your RV or Bus you will need parking hangtags in addition to the ones for the space that will be used by you vehicle.
•Barbecues in tow will also be required to have an additional pre-purchased hangtag. You will not be allowed to buy one at the gate.
•No Music system speakers may exceed 18" tall and 12" wide
•Music speakers my not produce sound greater than 68 decibels in accordance to the City of Houston sound ordinance Sections 30.1-30.9
•Liquid charcoal starter or other flammable liquids are strictly prohibited. Charcoal may be started with an electrical starter designed for this purpose or quick starting charcoal is recommended. Open flames are allowed but all barbecue pits left unattended must be extinguished.
•Ash containers, trash containers and port-o-lets are located in each lot.
•Hot ashes, cinders, smothering coal, disposable LP-gas cylinders or other hot materials must be disposed of in the Orange dumpsters only.
•Trash must be disposed of the in the Green dumpsters only.
•For safety purposes, all tents, chairs, etc. must be put away before entering Reliant Stadium.
•In order to ensure the safety of our fans, no golf carts, Segways, motorized coolers, skateboards, bicycles, or large balloons will be allowed for use by fans in the parking lots.
•Reliant Stadium and the Houston Texans do not grant the right to display advertising, banners or signs, or distribute promotional items on property. Fans may be asked to remove inappropriate banners or signs.
•All cooking equipment shall be situated away from crowds, buildings, vehicles or combustible materials. A minimum clearance distance of 3 feet is required.
•A minimum class 2A-10B:C fire extinguisher with a current service tag is required at each cooking area.
•LP-gas cooking appliances shall be UL listed and approved for use. LP-gas cylinders shall be secured in an upright position to keep from falling and positioned to prevent impact from vehicle traffic. Portable generators are not to be filled while running and fuel must be in a UL listed safety can (2 gal. max). Portable generators and fuel must be stored away from cooking appliances.
•Guests are welcome to continue tailgating up to one hour after the end of the game. However, in some instances guests may be asked to clear the parking lots before that time.
•Any violation of the fire safety regulations will be subject to citations being issued by the City of Houston Fire Inspector.
•For any further information regarding these guidelines or any other questions on the day of the game please call 832-667-1400 or text 832-655-0785.

Great thing to post
There has been a big effort by the Tailgate Ambassadors to get the speakers under control this year. Don’t bring anything bigger than 18 by 12. As far as parking passes, remember, if you want to park, you’ve got about 5 feet behind your car to tailgate. If you want to use the parking space behind your car, it’s another pass.
If you for some reason forget your second pass (read: show up without it), there is a team on golf carts that charges you an extra $50 to have that spot. They make you pay for that parking spot and pay to reimburse whoever is displaced by you taking the spot you are tailgating in.

there is very limted space. If there is going to be a large group, you will prolly want more than five feet of hang out area.

if you can get 5 people to get a pass and get there at the same time to reserve the spots you should be golden.

They sell every parking space individually
If you sit in the spot behind your car, like most people do, you’re in someone else’s parking space.
If you park all along a row, you’ll have some space, but you’ll also feel a little squeeze. I definitely suggest the second space so you can fit tables for food, pits, and just space other than sitting behind your car.

They’re the liveliest, probably in that order. Red is normally quiet, same with purple and brown. I think most of green is the expensive suite holders.
I don’t know much about Maroon.
Teal is Texans employees, no tailgating.

Sounds pretty awesome! Count me as interested.
I park in Yellow, which my scouting report would have to say seems like a pretty great lot for tailgating. Last year I was in Maroon, which seemed like it was on the other side of the earth from Reliant.
I got the parking passes initially with hopes of seeing some old friends who also were season ticket holders. Sadly, that fantasy has since shattered and reduced to me just bringing a couple cold ones in the car with me to pound right before heading in. Turns out either myself or my Texans are not near as popular as I had envisioned whenI made the purchase. I’m hoping this winning season and my new deoderant changes all of that.
So, is the thought that we might have access to a grill for our meat, or we each bring our snackage pre-constructed.
by Smittybaby on Nov 11, 2009 3:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I'm in the Yellow Lot BUTTT
But I’ll suggest we do it in the Orange lot where if you don’t have a parking pass you can hop the train and walk right to it. All of those with Orange Lot Passes should arrive as early as possible and set up along a grassy spot. If we set up along the far East fence of the Orange lot it will be very close to the train station. I know some folks said befor that they where in the Orange lot so I’m fairly sure we can find some guys that already have passes to that lot.

Orange or Yellow, Apparently
So who’s got a parking pass for the Orange Lot? How about the Yellow Lot? I think the winner will be whichever lot has more parking passes, provided those with passes can get there about the same time (so we can maximize use of the space)
From what I’ve gathered so far, Orange has 1 resident (CFH Tim) and Yellow has 2 (Smitty and Texans-Brocos). Anyone else in either of those lots?
With regard to food and drink, I’ll leave it open to the masses. I know that I don’t want to be responsible for cleaning a grill, so I’ll likely arrive with something already cooked and a disposable cooler.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

New Guy (+1 Orange)
So I’ve never posted (hence why I had to just create an account), but I visit this site multiple times a day. I’ve been lucky enough to attend almost all games since day one (missing a few while at A&M), and this upcoming MNF game against the deserters is definitely one of the top 5 I’ve looked forward to (doesn’t hurt that it falls on the last day of my med school exams). We MIGHT have a playoff-worthy team, and now have the chance to pay back VY for his previous homecoming celebration (with way too many Texans fans I might add) in his inaugural trip.
On to tailgating…Since I live maybe two blocks away and will be done with tests, I plan on being there pretty much when the gates open. My dad and I have been tailgating in the Orange lot since the first season, and in my biased personal opinion, I feel it is by far the rowdiest. I’m more than willing to park in the line with yall (I creepily feel like I know some of you through your comments, and yes I feel feel VERY wierd about that) to help extend the potential party zone. Since my dad is into more low-key tailgating, it would be helpful to park at the end of the line, but yall would at least be assured as to not haviing anyone bothering you for being too loud (read: drunk). As with every round of med school tests (and 90% of Texans games), I will definitely be helping myself to a drink, or 20.
Let me know if I can help out, and keep up the great work with the site.

Park in the middle/back
Best Trick I’ve learned…Park near the middle/back. One, easy for people to find you, and two if you’re gonna have a big group, the people that show up late will be able to join. The parking attendants will try to direct you towards the front, but if you’re nice, they’ll let you park wherever. My two cents…

A suggestion
It doesn’t really matter where you park if you are meeting people at a designated spot. I strongly suggest meeting at the “Raging Bull Tailgaters”—at the Northeast corner of the Platinum lot. Usually for MNF, they have the most kicking party ever. Not sure if they will be busting out the band this year. Awesome food, welcoming tailgate.
This tailgate is close the the St. Arnold’s tailgate (email them at their site to get a pass) and the Blue Crew tailgate which is in the Northwest corner and is also welcoming to groups of dedicated fans.
I typically tailgate in this area—visiting people around Platinum and close by Blue.
For a group of people who don’t tailgate regularly like some of the posters here, I suggest everyone parking wherever (because this is hard to coordinate), and then meeting at a designated spot like Raging Bull Tailgaters.
Also, get to the parking lots very very early. Monday traffic is a nightmare—you want to get to Reliant before rush hour. I believe in the past, they’ve pushed up the time for tailgating earlier on weekday games.

but previously when i went to games with friends, we get there around 30 min b4 gametime and park in blue lot…30 min before the game we normally are like the farthest away in that lot…anyway as i walk by there is great tailgaters there and it seems like its very lively…
can’t say anything about other lots as i have not been to any other…

A modest request of our Orange Lot brethren...
Ice & cooler space.
It’s a long haul to get over to the Orange Lot from Yellow / Green / Purple. If all us “West of Kirby” folks can avoid dragging coolers around, that would be optimal. Also, I’m guessing anybody coming on the train doesn’t want to drag a cooler either.
Thoughts?

I can bring a grill if someone will help unload it from the truck.
and I can also bring a cooler with some drinks.
One of the main reason I line the Orange lot and this spot in particular is how close it is to the train drop point, this makes it easy so you don’t have to carry a cooler too far. Also right by the road if someone wants to do a drive by and drop off / pick up supplies. With the idea being to make it as easy as possible for folks.

If you do come, you absolutely have to stop by our tailgate in the Platinum Lot. If only for a minute. Texans Chick tailgates with us and usually a ton of media doing interviews with all the party goers. At least that how we rocked it last year on MNF against JAX.

There’s actually a lot of people that just stay out there and party. There’s always an available HD tv to watch the game on. So anyone not able to afford tickets for the game should think about just doing that.
by MadMartygan on Nov 11, 2009 9:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
I see this all the time people have a great time watching the HD's in the parking lot.
It should be that much better since it is a night game and you can see the TV’s pretty well. Most of the tailgating groups have at least 1 if not more HD flatscreens. So there are plenty of places to watch.

This sounds like the best of worlds. Why would I stay home to watch the game and miss the flavor of the Monday Night experience? Dang! AND, you can watch the game, too, because the tailgate experience doesn’t end when the football is kicked-off….

For those who are interested in purchasing an Orange Lot Pass.
Here’s a link.
It’s $75 a pop and he has three on sale.
I’ll look for better prices and let you guys know.

I've seen some tickets too that come with an orange lot pass on ebay.
If anyone needs game tickets too, could kill two birds with one stone.

You might look on cregs list too
search for Texans Titans and orange should find several for sale
Also if you want the easies thing is still to park at the south fannin Train station of $10 and then$2 per person to ride the train and we will be right infront of you when you get off the train. This is alot cheaper than a orange lot ticket.

Supplies
Hey tim, maybe next week there could be a thread for everyone to say what they are bringing. Since I’ve got a orange pass, I’d be down to bring a couple of coolers full of ice to let everyone throw their drinks in. Also, is this grill gonna be big enough for everyone to use, or are we gonna need more than one. Just some thoughts…man I’m getting pumped for this game way too early. Long week ahead.

I live at the corner of cambridge and El Paseo…It’s two long blocks away. I can suggest places to park closer if needed (my old Archstone password might still work). Archstone is literally right across from orange lot. People also park along El Paseo to catch the bus. It would be about a 10 minute walk (like others said, you could definitely drop off ice chests/heavy objects).
