Take The Half-Season Poll: Most Outstanding Defensive Player For Your Houston Texans?
The Texans are slightly more than halfway through with the 2009 (regular) season, so let's take inventory of what we've seen. Through nine games, who has been the most outstanding defensive player for your Houston Texans? Note that I said "most outstanding" as opposed to "most valuable." In other words, who's been the absolute best on that side of the ball so far? Vote in the poll below and let us know why you voted the way you did in the Comments.

Plus, I think DeMeco's steadiness allows Cushing to free-lance
It’s become the penultimate in win/win situations.
The ultimate, of course, is me and boobs.

Now that's a joke...
To pretend that Brian Cushing is where he is because of DeMeco – that’s a copout. Brian Cushing is as far along as he his because of who he is, not because of someone else. Brian Cushing is the winner of this poll because of his football smarts, physical talent and instinct. DeMeco didn’t teach Cushing how to record a safety because DeMeco’s never recorded a professional safety. DeMeco didn’t teach Cushing how to intercept the football because Cushing has as many interceptions in his career as DeMeco – already! If DeMeco’s such a great ‘take other guys under his wing’ guy, then why hasn’t he performed this service with other linebackers before?
I can listen to arguments that Cushing has made DeMeco better because Ryans has always needed more help in the LB spot until this year, but I’m not buying this crap about DeMeco specifically making Cushing better. DeMeco being better is a valid reason to vote for him because he’s a great MLB, but to credit him with Cushing’s accomplishments makes me sick. The poll results point out the obvious: the Texans defense is better because of new additions, not due to the old guard.
The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.

I agree that not all of Cushings play is contributable to DeMeco but you have to give him credit I watch him all the time getting Cush in the right spot befor the snap

I think he has a point
That DeMeco’s “influence” shouldn’t be reason enough to vote him in over Cushing. To pretend that Cushing has not done this on his own or that he is getting a system boost is a little misleading.
That said, you probably could’ve made that post sound a little less douchey.

Can we please
give the safety a fucking rest? Amobi and Smith sealed that entire side of the field and Cushing was the beneficiary. That was the exact same play (more or less) that Chris Johnson took 91 yards, and Cushing made the same read both times. One time, he got the safety; the other time, he was nowhere to be seen when Johnson was cruising into the secondary.
Not even saying that Cushing hasn’t been very good — though he is still mediocre at best in coverage — but pointing to shit like the safety as “proof” is annoying.
Yay, sports.

I think that's mostly due to the emphasis on most outstanding rather than most valuable
Williams is probably the most valuable player on our defense due to his presence against the run and the constant double teams he demands on passing plays (not to mention forcing holds nearly every time out, eventually as he gets a bigger rep he’ll start getting more of those calls). There’s no player we’d miss more if he went down due to injury on the defense as much as Williams, Ryans would come in 2nd, and I could understand people giving Pollard mention as MVP because of the Texans improved quality of play defensively coinciding with his arrival but it’s hard to prove one way or the other how much was him alone and how much was simply growth of young players and all players getting more experience in the new system. Undoubtedly Pollard had quite a bit to do with it, but how much is hard to determine.
by Bryan72076 on Nov 12, 2009 11:45 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Another guy I think who should get mention for his impact on the D
Is Cody. Is it just me, or does it seem like he’s almost constantly around the football, that’s a HUGE improvement over Travis Johnson and almost certainly has played a part in the Texans improved play up front. He’s not a dominating NT in any sense of the word, but he gets his job done and never gives up on the play where our last NT would pull up lame once the play passed him.
by Bryan72076 on Nov 12, 2009 11:55 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree...
I’ve noticed him playing pretty well. Not “outstanding” by definition, but certainly compared to the last guy.

No surprise, Cushing!
But, a vote for Cushing is not a vote against any of the other players. It is just recognition for his outstanding play.
I am not a big fan of this kind of recognition, though. Awards are nice, but W’s are what counts. It is a team sport no matter how you cut it. We need all these guys playing at their collective top speed. I think we can at least expect Cushing, Meco, Pollard, Mario and all the other guys on this D to show up on every down. That is what I like about them. They are buying-in to the system, the coaches are giving them good direction during the game and they are listening.
I am looking forward to the second half of the season, because I think we have all seen the improvement.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
by Rip Jersey on Nov 12, 2009 1:18 PM CST via mobile reply actions 0 recs
I voted for Meco
But,I have to say, it is not an easy vote, Cush has been amazing as a rookie, Mario has really stepped it up in the run game(even if the sack total is a little low this year) and Pollard brings such an attitude to the D. Hard call! And the best part I never once considered Dunta for a vote.

Cushing
has my vote. Meco is as good as he has ever been if not better but Cush has changed the attitude on this D along with Pollard. Cushing has just gone above and beyond anything I would have ever thought. The guy is everywhere making plays and has closed out two games out for us with big plays. We are better this year because of him (and Pollard).

This was a runaway
I knew it would be. Cushing is a monster. If he doesn’t win defensive rookie of the year and make the pro bowl it will be a travesty!
I gave serious consideration to Pollard, he has been a godsend in the secondary and so far I haven’t seen the “poor coverage skills” that he was supposed to have. If the Texans don’t resign him to a long term deal in the offseason it will also be a travesty.
I don’t think he was released from KC for poor performance, I think it was more because Haley wanted to make his mark on the team. Well you did and I thank you for it you MORON. IMHO
Thank you.

Quin
is what this team needed this season.
Before this season, could you imagine Frenchy playing this well, and not starting?
It looks like Quin has CB2 locked for the rest of the year. And we have a decent 3 for the nickel, even. Regardless of personal opinions on Dunta, he’s not losing us games.
I voted Cushing, because its obvious. He takes us to another level. But without Quin, I see more passing plays (and to the WR’s) and less plays by Cushing.
Oh, and Bush was a major improvement, natch. I love the second half numbers. Dude is an adjustment master, half way through his first season.
