Okam...

Damn, I wanted that guy to be the NT we’ve never known.

But like yourself, he is the biggest disappointment because I had expectations. Like that he would be active for all the games.

bennett
many thought he would be our starting CB, but he played terribly…and is inactive on gamedays…

Agree, but...
That disappointment started last year. I kinda figured it would continue, based on how it just came out of nowhere and stuck around all damn year.
I also considered Barber, but we actually got better due to his disappointments, so Okam won out.

true...
i thought though that bennett could rebound… i remember his rookie year he lpayed real well, so i figured it was a sophmore slump…hopefully he can still rebound…dunta, reeves, quin, mccain, molden, bennett…i like the last 5 there, and am comfortable if dunta leaves…

Very Skeptical Bennett Can Rebound
They’re not even dressing him for the games anymore. Not to say he might not go on to find success elsewhere, but I would be stunned if it was in Houston.

In regards to Connor Barwin...
You need to remember that his first NFL season marks the SECOND football season that he has played Defense.
He is a converted TE in college.
So don’t expect him to bust out and go wild this year. next year is when the coaches have said they expect Barwin to really begin to shine.

Got my vote on this one. And someone please tell me why the hell Smith has 8 votes – that’s more than Okam. Everyone should have known prio to the season that Smith WAS NOT a sack master (that sounds funny) in Arizona so it shouldn’t have been expected here. He’s really starting to do well in this defense and if you remember he didn’t come on strong until the end of the year for AZ last year.

You're absolutely right.
Punctuation is overrated. Dunta hasn’t given up a big play at all this year. Other than the big bomb to Ochocinco, the several pass interference plays, the complete whiff against the Jags (or against pretty much anyone else he’s tried to tackle).
Besides all those, Dunta hasn’t given up a single big play.

I voted Robinson
For a franchise tagged player trying to prove he’s worth a long term big money contract, he’s had a pretty dissapointing year so far. I don’t think his play is really all that bad, he still makes some big plays for us, but I don’t think he’s done much to show he’s worth being paid as an elite #1 CB. If Robinson was our #2 CB i’d be thrilled senseless because we’d have his big play abilitity without having to depend on him to contain elite recievers, but asking him to cover #1 recievers is becoming a bit of a trainwreck, simply because we don’t ask him to cover #1s anymore, we ask him + a safety/LB to cover a #1. That opens up the rest of the field for other recievers a bit more, luckilly his supporting cast has really stepped up lately, but he’s definately not worth elite CB money and I was hoping he’d prove himself worthy of the tag this year.

To a great degree, Dunta is a victim of the expectations created when he asserted that he was worth elite CB money.

100% agree...you can't write "Pay Me Rick" on the back of your shoes after turning down phat money....
And then go out and play average.
He HAS to start tackling better.
If he does that, I am ok with Dunta. Blown coverages against the best recievers in the league…going to happen. I expect that AJ is going to burn the opposition’s best corner at least once a game as well.
But the tackling thing really bothers me. WRAP UP THE RUNNER. Stop diving at them. Running backs/Recievers in this leage are too good to hope bouncing into them will take them down.

i understand where u coming from and all but really this game has always been a team game so him getting help from safeties is not his call probaly coaches. we all know if we play man dunta will hold his on it’s the other side we have to worry about when we go man. the whole franchise tag is such a big waste of time and stuff i mean teams franchise players so they don’t leave pretty much does not matter how good or bad they are.

Barwin
Barwin just had the bone-headed penalties in the Indy game, but how much did you expect from him? Look around the league at the other DE’s drafted in the first two rounds:
3. Tyson Jackson – 12 tackles (in fairness, a little different of a case because of the 3-4)
11. Aaron Maybin – 5 tackles, 0 games started
13. Brian Orakpo – 17 tackles, 5.5 sacks (Defensive ROTY candidate)
18. Robert Ayers – 11 tackles, 0 games started (converted to LB)
32. Evander Hood – 1 tackle, 0 games started (3-4 DE)
43. Everette Brown – 8 tackles, 1 sack, 0 games started
46. Connor Barwin – 9 tackles, 1 sack, 0 games started
52. David Veikune – 0 tackles, 0 games started
57. Paul Kruger – 1 tackle, 0 games started
I’m not saying that Barwin will be great, but given the learning curve for defensive ends and D lineman at large, I think calling him the most dissapointing is premature.

Not too mention that Barwin is playing defense for ONLY THE SECOND SEASON EVER.
The guy was a TE until his last year of college.
He has ALOT too learn. The fact that he is playing as well as he is is amazing given he is new to the position and facing the opposing teams best lineman.

Fred Bennett...
is the most disappointing player by far on defense. He got beat out by two rookies and now he doesn’t even dress out for games.
Dunta has been doing his job. What more can you ask of him? The only deep pass I remember him giving up all season was from Palmer to Ochocinco. I think the offseason contract issues still overshadow Dunta and people are too critical of his performance.
He doesn’t have any INT’s this season, which is kind of disappointing, but when you look at it, QB’s dont throw his way that often. Dunta’s coverage is the reason for that. Since the beginning of the season, what opposing team’s #1 WR, except for Fitzgerald’s 2 TD game, scored multiple TDs against us? Only 4 WR’s have scored TDs against us all year.
by BdoFiFtY81 on Nov 12, 2009 8:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

That’s why teams dont throw the ball to him. Patrick Willis shares some of his aura with Dunta and QB’s recognize that.

I voted for
Antonio Smith because he was supposed to be the “Mathis” to our “Freeny” but in my opinion he has been more “Anthony Weaver” than anything else.
I figured the overwhelming choice would be Dunta but I didn’t go with him because he is still recovering from a severe knee injury and a lot of people for get that it’s generally a player’s “second” season back that they are 100% I know for a fact that is the way it is with running backs.
I personally think that people are voting for Dunta more from their hearts than from their minds because he pissed everyone off with his stupid stunt in the first game of the year which was inexcusable and as such people are scrutinizing him much harder than they would have if he had not pissed everyone off. IMHO
Thank you.

What?
Smith was supposed to play the run and take some of the pressure off Mario. It’s hard to tell how well he’s doing the latter since Super Mario is injured and not playing at 100%, but to say that he’s disappointing ignores the impact he’s having on the run game. He does get in the backfield and is really a force against the run. I admit he sucked the first three weeks, but so did everybody else. Since then, though, he has been playing lights out against the run and has been a force for us. Even if you don’t think he’s playing at his best, he’s definitely playing better than, say, Bennett or Okam or Dunta.

Most folks only see the end results
Cushing got a safety. But most didn’t see that Smith forced the play right into Cushing.
One of Cushing’s interceptions (and I think Frenchy’s as well) was a direct result of Smith getting pressure on the QB.
But Smith doesn’t have 10 sacks yet. So he sucks. Balls.

To be an upgrade over Weaver, the only requirement Smith had to meet was possessing an actual pulse.
Smith has been very solid, especially over the last 4-6 games.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Agreed
On all points.
I just hope everyone could tell my last statement was sarcasm.

Patrick Willis said so.

And yet
Unless I’m mistaken, Smith has as many sacks in nine games as Weaver had in his entire career with the Texans.

I was a Smith Basher early in the season.
But I don’t see how anyone can continue hatin’ on him, he has played much better than Weaver ever did.

Actually...
I didn’t vote for Cunta because I saw him play last year, so I knew there was a very good chance that a big reason he was making an ass of himself in the offseason was because he knew he wasn’t worth the money he was asking for. He sucked ass last year when he came back, and improved a little this year to be “not very good.”
I can’t be disappointed by a player I already thought sucked.

Gonna go with Mario.
Sort of tired of the injury and double-teamed excuses. Fact of the matter is, he’s still getting by on the same moves he had his rookie season. And as good as he plays the run sometimes, his constant speed-rush often puts him out of the play immediately.
I don’t know if it’s coaching or Mario himself, but it’s time he started going with an inside move every now and then. He’s the biggest, baddest DE in the league; not just a speed guy. Time to use that strength to manhandle offensive linemen instead of playing to their strengths. He’s not going to open up opportunities for Okoye and Smith to make plays if he can get pushed behind the pocket by a single OT every time.
He has the potential to be the best DE in the league, but he’s not going to get there unless he changes his approach.

I don't disagree with this
He’s basically using the same set of pass moves, which are little more than speed or bull. Not much technique this year. He is creating pressure, but he’s not finishing the job. His stats reflect this.
The last couple of years, he’s come on on strong in the second half. I hope he can this year, as well.

He is obviously imited nby the shoulder inury.
Remember they have mentioned that he will probably have to have surgery in the offseason for his shoulder. That means it has got to really be killing him.

Went with Mario
Even though he has been great against the run, I was just expecting more out of him this year at getting to the QB with the addition of Antonio Smith (and the departure of Anthony Weaver).

Worst D player
I hung Bennett with the worst title, since he is just that and more. How can you not be bad for your team if your play or lack of it keeps you off the field in favor of backups?
I thought about D-Rob. but it would have been a tainted pick due to the off season crap. He is playing the same way I remembered over the past two seasons, missing tackles and getting burned more often than he should, but he is at least a good cb so clubs don’t pick on him as much as other cb’s on team. I also thought about Okam, and while he has been a bust for most part I do remember some good play out of his position during the season. The same can be said about Barwin as Okam and both have had TOO many penalties. I am looking forward to Nov. 23 game on monday, and expect us to win big; I checked the odds and if it is not a misprint I saw where we were being given 4 1/2 points against Titans. I know home field is supposed to be worth 3, but 4 1/2? I really believe the Texans are far better than they are being given credit.
