Reliant Stadium Named NFL’s #1 Tailgating Venue

The guys down at Texan Mojo. Shotgun Time!!!

While this is old news (about a month old), I figured I would save it until the bye week to write about it.

In a review written by Scott Bowen of Forbes Traveler, he names the confines of Reliant Stadium the cream of the crop when it comes to NFL tailgating festivities. Being a season ticket holder and avid tailgater for years, I may be a little biased when I say I have to agree with him.

I have only tailgated at a few venues other than Reliant, honestly. The Georgia Dome in Atlanta and The Superdome in New Orleans being the only other pro ones I have had the joy of tailgating at. I have been to several college stadiums before, but this review is about the pros, so I will stick to that.

Bowen graded the venues on parking space, family, tradition, fan intensity and of course, great food. Now, food should be a given. This is Texas, after all. While he gives credit to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City the most credit on food, it is closer than you think. "One place that could give Arrowhead’s chefs a run for their money are the grill-masters down at Reliant Stadium, in Houston, where the Texas-style barbecue rules," Bowen claims. I am quick to agree with him. The people I have met in the Yellow Lot know how to cook.

The parking in Yellow Lot is spectacular as well, being one of the only places to have grass instead of concrete for its tailgaters. And if you get there before 10 a.m. usually on game days, there is plenty of space on said grass. Fan intensity is never in question. There are so many groups out there doing whatever it takes to get fans rowdy and making sure everyone is having a good time. "Raging Bull" is said to be the best tailgating group out there, but I am not sure what lot they are in. In the Yellow Lot, the highlight is Texan Mojo. This group is big supporters of Miller Lite and every 30 minutes, they provide free Miller Lite shotguns for any who are willing. This is accompanied by a usually hilarious speech by "The Preacher." You should certainly check them out if you get a chance.

All in all, I am not surprised that Reliant is getting this kind of national love. Because you know the tailgating has to be amazing for us Houstonians to suffer through the heat and humidity to do it every Sunday. It’s a great time and every fan should try it at least once. If you are ever in the Yellow Lot, stop by and have a Shiner. We are there every home game. Because there ain't nothing like cracking open a beer while the sun is coming up over the stadium.

Also, in case you missed it, Tim is putting together a meetup tailgate for the upcoming Monday Night Game. Hope to see you guys there!

Yup. That's us.

But don’t hold that against me.

Of course not

There are fire engines, army trucks and old FedEx trucks in the yellow lot. I think a Bus is actually playing it safe.

I will be coming to Houston for my first tailgating experience during the game against the Colts. I have a ticket in the yellow lot, I hope to be able to see all these awesome tailgating groups I keep hearing about.

Dear Mojo advocate,

I park in Yellow and prefer Miller Light above most anything beerwise…take plenty of crap for it too from those that fancy themselves as snobs, when they look plain lost to me. It would be nice to find a group that knows whats what. in that world.

Anyhow, whats the protocol on “crashing” the Mojo tailgate. Is it cool to do so & if so, do you bring food thats preprepared or food to grill or do you have to bring cash, beer, prostitutes or what exactly?" I don’t want to walk in like a douche and commit some heinous party foul, but I’m tired of pounding 3 or 4 beers in my car before the game like the cheap drunk i am.

"from those that fancy themselves as snobs"

and from those who are not 18-year-old girls and from those who don’t like the taste of piss and…

Yay, sports.

It seems like your just crashing someone's house party

w/o even a guy who’s friends with the neighbor’s gardner tying you to the group would be really strange.

I see it going quite awkardly.

I’d be like, “Hey everybody, I’m here to mooch, but I have a Texans hat so its cool….oh and this is my dad, you need to care for him the rest of his natural life…hey, you got anything to eat?…and by the way, your wife’s running low on birth control pills.”

Ok so that last line is ripped from the Money Pit, but still…ya see what I mean…just plain awkward…

We take away the awkward

By going naked. It seems to help.

For the record, that’s what makes Tim so snuggly-wuggly.

BFD, the guy on the left is Patrick. aka “The Preacher.” He is the one you know? We’ll have to take the two mile hike to the Yellow Lot to visit on MNF.

I wouldve gone to that show.

But I was only a year old.

Would have been cool to see,

I only got to see Metalica after they had sold out and gotten soft. Pantera, Megadeth, and Ozzie were always great shows no matter where they preformed.

My first concert ever

Was in 1986. I was eight. It was Metallica opening for Ozzy Osbourne. They were in support of Master of Puppets. It was at The Omni in Atlanta…which isnt even there anymore. I feel as old as BFD now…
