Brian Cushing: Rookie of the Year

Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders, whose opinion I highly respect, went over the midseason numbers of all the rookies and had this to say about Brain Cushing:

Brian Cushing of Houston is the Defensive Rookie of the Year. I'm a big fan of Aaron Curry, and Ray Maualuga is a big part of Cincinnati's surprise season, but honestly, it isn't close, and there aren't any offensive rookies who can match Cushing either.

While Texans fans have been thinking DROY for Cushing for a while, it's good to hear recognition from non-Texans sources as well. Follow the link for analysis of Cushing's numbers compared to other players.

I love this post!

His wild-fire intensity is what has gotten him this far, i still think he has to work on his coverage skills. Granted Dallas Clark is a Top-Ten TE, but Cush got SCHOOLED last Sunday.

Not really Cush's fault

He should’ve either not been on Clark or been jamming him at the line. Yes, he does still need plenty of work in coverage, but he’s been making plays.

Note to self: Insert something witty here.

Cap'n Meco

Should have been telling him where to go….

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

More jamming at the line, please.

In fact, teach everybody on the entire defense how to do that. I can’t really imagine a time you wouldn’t want to do it. 90% of the QBs in football are going to stick it to you if you let them play a rhythm game with their receivers.

?

Is it for number of times pancaked by a defender?

Agreed

I noticed that a lot of Schaub’s sacks seem to be coming after holding on too long in the pocket. Latest example was the one Brown gave up to Freeney on Sunday.

Schaub holds the ball WAY too long.

Most of those aren't Brown's fault

Like Shake said, most of them have come after a really long time.

That’s a Stephanie Stradley blog post from October showing how Brown’s first four sacks this year were from Schaub holding the ball too long.

In fairness for the Brown rating

He has accumulated a lot of stupid penalties.

That’s about the only thing I blame on him this year though.

Great, now he is going to get injured.

DROY hes got a shot. They’ve all but given the ROY to Harvin.

Cushing has a solid shot at DROY

HOWEVER, I only think he will win the award if the Texans make the playoffs AND he can continue to play at his current pace.
