Take The Half-Season Poll: Most Outstanding Offensive Player For Your Houston Texans?
Let's turn our attention to the other side of the ball. Through nine games, who has been the most outstanding offensive player for your Houston Texans? Once again, note that I said "most outstanding" as opposed to "most valuable." In other words, who's been the absolute best on that side of the ball so far? The "Brian Cushing of the Offense," if you will? Vote in the poll below and let us know why you voted the way you did in the Comments.

I was tempted to go with OD...
But with the season that Schaub is having. It’s hard to not look his way. He’s avoided the injury bug so far this season and is on pace to pass for 4500 yds with 30 td’s to go along with it. We all knew that if healthy, Schaub can be one heck of a QB for the texans but he’s clearly exceeded my expectations. Give him another year or two and add a consistent running game behind him and he’ll give the fab four (Brady/Manning/BigBen/Brees) a run for their money.

Teh Schaub
He’s making the engine tick. If he can just drop that one damn stupid throw every game, he’d be the best QB in the league.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.

FWIW
Since the Colts game, teh Schaub has leapfrogged Peyton and is now the second best qb in the game according to FO.
Wow.
PS I voted for Ron Dayne.

Look I love Schaub and all
But Andre Johnson just caught 10 balls two weeks after bruising a lung. He’s the majority of our deep passing game (though Jacoby has been more involved this year), and he draws the doubles that make Schaub’s matchups work. I don’t think it’s close. This voting split just seems like a case of “which is more unexpected”.

Agreed
Schaub’s been outstanding, but I think his leading the poll is more a result of everyone being so pleased with what he’s done as compared to years past instead of him being more outstanding than ’Dre.
Truth be told, Andre Johnson is so phenomenal that he should win this poll well into retirement.

Part of it for me
Is that he’s throwing to everyone very well, mixing it up with a lot of receivers. If this poll asked “who is the most talented” then its Andre all the way. But Schaub “stands out” the most to me because he’s in on every offensive play and doing a really great job.
Imagine if Andre Johnson somehow got the ball every offensive snap.
It kind of sucks that we expect such a high level of play from Andre that we are sometimes used to it. Whenever the offense is playing well and Andre has a good day, the write-ups usually say “Andre was Andre” – he deserves praise piled upon him in heaps, instead of this “he’s as good as he always is” stuff. Although, If I were Andre Johnson, I’d only want to be compared to myself too. The man is a Footbal God.

…but I thought that’s only reserved for Patrick ‘walking over the water’ Willis?

There's a difference between walking on water and people thinking you can walk on water
And that difference, is Andre Johnson.
by WhiskeyR on Nov 13, 2009 12:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That, and the fact that Patrick Willis is made of water.
Hyper-intelligent water from Saturn. But water nonetheless.

But I thought that might cause a riot. My comedy stylings ended at Slaton and Moats.

Slaton is really standing out too
Leading the league in fumbles, or close to it?
If he gets over that and starts running like last year, with his receiving skills, he could get some votes in this poll.

Is anybody but me expecting him to bust loose the rest of the year?
Or am I completely senile?

You're not COMPLETELY senile.
I see him doing that on a couple of games. Not sure which ones but he’s bound to break loose for a couple of long runs and 100 yd, multiple td games.

No, I also think the fumbles stop.

Enough to warrant a name change to bigfatdrunkandsenile
I voted for Owen Daniels. Like AJ, he is a silent leader. Heck, all the guys on this team have at least a modicum of humility and a dedication toward team purpose. I just feel that OD was putting himself into the conversation of best TE in the game and even though this offense will operate without him, there was no onw more reliable in the red zone this year. The coaches knew it, Schaub knew it and I think we knew it. When they got down inside the 10 yard line, I found myself talking to the TV set saying, “Owen Daniels!” On every play!
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

OD
But its tough to pick one. Andre and Schaub are having great years.

I’m REALLY excited with the performances of OD and ’Dre this year (really feel for OD by the way). But to me, outstanding would have to go to Matt Schaub. He has really brought his game to a whole new level this year. Granted it seems to me like he regressed these past two weeks, but if he can keep it up this year… he could be in the running for MVP next year

I voted Schaub
But would put it as:
1) Schaub
1a) Andre Johnson

AJ.
that one handed grab against tennessee, that bullrush into the endzone against Arizona. those plays gave the team an identity. i think shaubby has had an excellent season, but i think AJ is the glue that holds it all together. he hasn’t fumbled, has only dropped a handful of passes, and he consistently beats anybody that’s matched against him.
Suzy Kolber: Joe, it's been a tough season for Jets fans. What does it mean to you now that the team is struggling?

Schaub
because of leadership as well as play.
I saw an interview with someone who said his demeanor in the huddle in the second half at Arizona was the reason they came back.
On another note, meaningful games in December? The next three weeks are very important. But look at our december schedule. Four winnable games. 4-0 there punches our ticket, I do believe.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

AJ
Schaub has been stellar, no doubt.
But for me, I vote for the guy who gets his helmet hidden because he wants to play the rest of the game with 1 lung. And still be the best WR in the NFL.

I voted Schaub
For one, I happen to be a proud member of the “Schaub for world leader” movement. For another, there has been times where’s he’s put the team on his shoulders late in the game, and it’s hard for a reciever to do the same, even one as talented as Andre Johnson. They don’t always pull out the close wins, especially when they’re at the goaline with under 2 minutes to play, but has there been a time yet this year where the Texans were down by 1 score with 1 possession left that he didn’t take them straight down the field for a potential game winning/tying drive?
by Bryan72076 on Nov 13, 2009 12:53 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Also, concerning Schaub's "regressed" play
Last week one interception was caused by the OL taking a break for tea and allowing rushers a clear path to Schaub, and the other if you go back and look at it was primarilly due to Johnson running a pretty lazy route (even as good as he is, he’s not golden all the time, no one is) and the defender jumped the route. Schaub could have tried to sell away from Johnson better, but Johnson could have ran a much better route as well, so to put all the blame on Schaub for that play would be a little unfair.
by Bryan72076 on Nov 13, 2009 12:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
there were 3 guys around andre no? Thats just a bad idea no matter how good the route.
by nolander on Nov 13, 2009 2:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I only saw one who was in any position to make a play on the ball
And that was the corner who made the pick. If Johnson had done a better job selling the pattern deep, he wouldn’t have had the corner in his hip pocket when Schaub released the ball.
by Bryan72076 on Nov 13, 2009 5:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think thats really how it works, sorry. When a corner knows he has 2 other guys covering a reciever, he can sit on the route for an easy pick.
by nolander on Nov 13, 2009 5:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m sorry, i should have specified by what i termed regressed… for the past few games (actually all season to an extent) Schaub has tried to get the ball to a receiver hoping that they will make something happen. Now, i LOVE the fact that trust is not an issue between our QB and WRs (a la Row Williams/Tony Romo), but he still has to take that next step to the Elite QB level. You will not see Peyton Manning or Tom Brady force a bad throw (even though i was hoping #18 would last week).
by Cougsfan on Nov 13, 2009 2:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
However...
You WILL see Brees do it with great consistency. He’s the king of the “my guy’s in one-on-one, lemme throw it up and trust my guy to come down with it.”
Now, this obviously doesn’t speak to your point of not throwing into triple-coverage, but that’s a gimme. He shouldn’t have done that at all.
Also, where does the Romo/Williams thing come from?? There were prolly 20 better examples for that situation.

Actually they do
All QBs at some point have a situation where they need to convert but have no open recievers and have to throw into coverage and count on their reciever making a play. Even Manning throws an INT every now and then.

AJ has been our most oustanding
Now don’t get me wrong, Schaub is our MVP in my book b/c we wouldn’t have 5 W’s w/o his productivity and resilience. BUT, I think he is still developing his sense of entitlement to each game/win. He has not assumed CONTROL in these close games yet, which is the final step in his maturization and will be what gets us over the hump in these close contests in the future. He has been good, but he will be great once he feels so entitled that he can start slapping his guys around a little when they screw up. He is on the right track…I love how he has been going right back to players after they drop a pass etc.
He should slap Myers, Slaton, Chris Brown & himself (for the pick six, for running the play that should’ve run out the clock against the colts, for missing the TE high in the endzone v. Arizona & for not telling Kubiac/Shanahan "F*ck it! I am getting the ball in the endzone my damn self!" These late turnovers & fumbles in the endzone BS does not happen with outstanding QB play…his offense should play up for and even fear him too much. He will get there as a leader… hopefully soon!
Andre’s play, particularly the Arizona touchdown play, which will be a NFL highlight for 50 years for determination and physical play by a reciever, has been truly outstanding.

Best O player of 1st 1/2 of season
Daniels of course; I know all would pick Matt S. but in all reality he has thrown a pile of INT’s, while Owen D. has made multiple BIG PLAYSand has also saved Schaubs behind multiple times in the games he has played. You could make a case for “that’s his job” but to go over the middle time and again and get WACKED so many of the trips and not only catch the ball but hold on to it when we need it most is just great and deserving of the best title.
