Ask Music City Miracles

Hello BRB,

I don't think this here fanpost needs much of an introduction.  Please leave any questions you have about the Titans and this game below.  Hopefully this thread will not evolve into anything other than a good football discussion, but I am not going to hold my breath on that one.

On the game- I expect this to be a really good game.  The Titans seem to have fixed some of the things that ailed them early in the season, but the wins have come against inferior teams.  This game will be the first true test.

Have at it.

How do you think the Titans will handle the Monday Night Loss?

The team seems to have a new confidence, but when that is shattered upon the rocks of despair on national television; do you see Vince Young having another mental breakdown? Or will Jeff Fisher just sport a Matt Schaub jersey to the post-game conference?

Funny

How they would handle a loss is actually a pretty decent question asked in a different form.

Ok

Since you seem like you genuinely want to know:

Right now the team has visions of making the playoffs. While I don’t think there is any shot that happens, I do think it is fueling their fire as they prepare each week. I think one more loss takes the wind out of those sails. If that loss comes Monday night, I think you would see them having a lot of trouble getting it together in the following two games (ARI and @IND).

I may be in the minority

But I thought it was hilarious when Fisher put that jersey on. Fisher is the only thing about the tits I respect, and I admire his ability to poke fun at himself. Hats of to him.

How do you see the match up

Between our improved running defense and your still potent running game? Is the strategy just feed the ball to CJ?

by JimboTexan on Nov 18, 2009 10:58 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

That is always the strategy for a Jeff Fisher team, and it is even that much more the strategy when you have a guy like CJ who can be limited on all of his carries but 2 and end up with 150 yards. The more times he touches the ball, the more likely it is that he will break one.

During the bye week, I actually took a break from Houston sports talk radio (I stream several shows from Austin) and I have to say I didn’t miss it at all. If the Texans lose on MNF (and I think it’s going to be a very, very close game) I’m going to have to shut it down for at LEAST another week.

About Vince

Highlights since he got his job back show him throwing really nice deep balls. Has he also been missing a ton of deep balls, or is he picking his spots really well?

by HoustonDiehards on Nov 18, 2009 11:17 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Great question

Because his yards don’t seem to represent what you’d expect given the highlights. And durga help me if I ever watch a BESF game where the Texans aren’t involved. Seeing those oil derricks makes me change the channel mid highlight.

by beefy on Nov 18, 2009 1:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I would say he is about 50/50

on the deep ball right now. He has been throwing it well, but the deep ball has never been his problem in my opinion. He has struggled throwing wise with the underneath stuff more, and his reads have been bad on the mid-range stuff.

Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.

by Jimmy on Nov 18, 2009 11:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We haven't seen some of the mind-numbingly stupid short and mid-range throws lately.

Granted, they could re-emerge at any time, but if there’s one thing that’s improved it’s the ability to throw to a spot where either the Titans’ WR gets the ball or it goes in the dirt, especially at mid-ranges.

he's a little better at it

but really I’d put a lot of that credit on a vastly improved WR corps and a run game that terrifies every defensive payer on the field (the Bills started/played safety Bryan Scott at LB partly due to injures and partly to help contain CJ). Teams didn’t fear LenDale like that.

Running Game

Do you believe the Texans can shut down your running game? (Remember, our defense is completely different) If we do shut down CJ, do you think VY can put the team on his back and pass the ball with accuracy?

You know what we think, but I am curious to know your take.

by Jahon on Nov 18, 2009 11:24 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think we can "shut down" CJ. It is too hard to "shut down" the great backs...

We can, however, “contain” him and force VY to try and beat us on his own.

Sorry...

let me rephrase “contain”. I agree CJ is a badass, but I hope we limit him to only 90 or so yards, maybe one TD. I think Pollard will play lights out.

by Jahon on Nov 18, 2009 11:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The thing that makes CJ so dangerous,

as I have said before, is that you can contain him for 90% of the game and he can still kill you on 2 carries.

As for VY, I think he can put the team on his back. It isn’t something they want him doing every week, but I think it is something he can do.

Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.

by Jimmy on Nov 18, 2009 11:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Which is what happened in our last meeting, I think?

It seemed our D (read: Cushing) was able to contain CJ for most of the second half. But a few 70+ yard runs puts an end to the use of the phrase ‘contain’ for the overall performance.

If you do successfully contain CJ for 90%of the game...

…it’ll be because you stacked the box for 90% of the game. And yes, in the last three games VY has hit Scaife and Britt okay, and he’s run reasonably well. I was no big believer in VY, but he played well in the 49ers game, and they have a legitimate defense, and that was on the road in a very tough environment. I think those looking for a collapse may be disappointed. This will be a close game, I’d imagine.

So far, I haven't seen a reason to hate him.

He isn’t my favorite owner in the league, but I could name 15 off the top of my head that I would take Bud over. The only thing he has done that could’ve killed the Titans was forcing the team to draft Vince Young, but since the other choice was Leinhart (the Titans were never going to take Cutler at #3), I’m okay with it. Leinhart sucks dick (no metaphor).

How are the receivers playing?

I’ve looked at VY’s stat line and he seems to be playing efficient ball. How much of that is on the receivers? I understand that part of Kerry Collins’ struggles were due to dropped balls and poor communication with his receivers, yes? Have they made a turnaround as well?

by cubic on Nov 18, 2009 2:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Some of it is, definitely.

We started the year with the addition by subtraction of not re-signing Justin McCareins.

Beyond that, Nate Washington is nobody’s #1 receiver, but he is leading the team in TD catches, and he seems to be the best WR in the Red Zone.

Justin Gage struggled with Kerry Collins, which was weird after playing okay last season and having a whole offseason to improve the chemistry. Worse, they seemed fine in the Preseason. But then the Regular Season rolled around, and suddenly nobody could catch cold, especially in the Second Half. And by that, I specifically mean that Gage started dropping balls left and right. But then VY comes in, and Gage catches fire. Which is also weird, but at least there’s some rationale to it. Specifically, Vince tends to throw high, and Gage is very tall.

But now Gage is out because of his back, again because he caught a very high ball and then had his legs cut out from under him. On the flip side, at least the ball was where only he could catch it.

Kenny Britt has done well for a rookie WR. I don’t know what more he could do with the limited opportunities he’s had.

Bo Scaife seems to have re-emerged with Vince’s re-emergence. Whether that is a change to the scheme or years of a chemistry… I have no idea.

Finally, much touted rookie Jared Cooke has turned invisible. He could be in the cast of Heroes.

But, had I said it, I would’ve been called an idiot by the besf fans.
Of course, I would’ve thrown the obligitory “fuckface” “doucher” and “assbag” in the description. I dream in cussword.

Also, Scaife’s cycle is obviously sync’ed with VY’s due to all the buttsex they’ve shared through the years.

Bo has to be one of the most resilient football players I’ve seen. ACL on both knees, and he works so damn hard.

Britt has looked like the best WR for a couple of weeks now.

I agree on Britt.

This is why Justin Gage’s loss isn’t such a big deal. Britt can do everything Gage can do, plus he’s a more reliable pass catcher, plus he has MUCH better speed.

Granted, VY tends to look to the TE and RB check-downs more than KC did, but he’s still found Britt several times down the field for big plays. These are the plays that in past years would have been INTs due to WRs quitting on their routes.

I have noticed the guys adjusting much better on downfield balls...

where, in the past, they’d just let it hit the turf. They’re actually running under the balls, like they should. Some of the deep balls that Radio is getting credit for are just barely playable, but the guys are running coming off their line to get under them. You didn’t see that much in the past.
Guess who keeps getting the credit, though…

If by "adjusting much better on downfield balls... "

…you mean “doing their jobs, for which they are well paid,” then yes, it’s been much better. In fact, as I noted in the first place, the whole receiving corps is better, if marginally. Why that’s suddenly a KNOCK on the QB is hard to understand, but it definitely IS part of what’s been happening.

Me personally, I think KC’s age just straight caught-up with him. I think his arm was tired, resulting in terrible physical execution, especially late in games. I don’t know how else to explain a veteran QB playing well early but poorly late. His passes were off-target, and guys were dropping what was catchable. Weird but well documented.

Perhaps you feel that you’re better off without me, and that’s your right, of course, but just so you know, I consider that language wholly inappropriate, especially when I’ve made an effort to be civil earlier.

I mean, my goodness. Not five posts earlier you called yourself classless and made the (correct) point that no one from Tennessee will listen to you because of it.

by MDC on Nov 19, 2009 9:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

If by whiny cheap punk you mean badass enough to scar Chuck Norris

then yes. Finny is mouthy and he’s physical, but he damned sure isn’t cheap or dirty. He doesn’t go after knees, intentionally head-hunt or hit late out of bounds, so I don’t get why he’s considered cheap or dirty by so many Texans fans. If anything that charge could be lobbied the other way after the junior high-style melee that broke-out on the Texans bench where several Texans were spotted throwing punches at Finny and either Andre Johnson or Jacobi Jones walked away with a chunk of Finny’s hair.

I mean yeah Cortland talks and gets WRs pissed off at him (and it usually throws them off their game), but he does carry himself like a man, which is more than I can say for someone who pulls hair in a fight:

according to this report from Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle , one unnamed Texan took a chunk of Finnegan’s red hair off the field as a souvenir of the fight.

If I saw him taking cheap shots I’d be bitching about them because he doesn’t need to resort to that crap. He brings the wood, and plays at full speed, but he I don’t see him getting out of control or head/knee hunting… and we see him 16+ games a year.

Huckleberry is

a term used in the 19th century allot to mean someone who can get things done, kind of like saying “im your guy”, Thus the name of Mark Twain’s famous character, ie he was "the guy". Also the origin of the name of the cartoon character "Huckleberry Hound"

I've done no research whatsoever

outside of reading “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” but my guess is that it is a reference to Huckleberry Finn. He’s commonly called Huck, but it’s actually a shortening of the aforementioned Huckleberry.

Once again, having done no research on this, and possessing a worthless PoliSci degree, my guess is that Huckleberry was slang for a salt of the earth everyman, a good ol’ boy if you will. English majors who have seen Tombstone and have a better grasp of the timeline may be able to shed more light.

What I saw was first Finnegan’s head being smashed into the bench repeatedly by one of your players. And then…I swear I saw it…I saw one of your coaches throwing punches. Swinging punches at whichever Titans players he could see. I also saw Mario Williams and Jason Jones getting at it.

Yep totally served

“Huckleberry” was commonly used in the 1800’s in conjunction with “persimmon” as a small unit of measure. “I’m a huckleberry over your persimmon” meant “I’m just a bit better than you.” As a result, “huckleberry” came to denote idiomatically two things. First, it denoted a small unit of measure, a “tad,” as it were, and a person who was a huckleberry could be a small, unimportant person—usually expressed ironically in mock self-depreciation. The second and more common usage came to mean, in the words of the “Dictionary of American Slang: Second Supplemented Edition” (Crowell, 1975):
“A man; specif., the exact kind of man needed for a particular purpose. 1936: “Well, I’m your huckleberry, Mr. Haney.” Tully, “Bruiser,” 37. Since 1880, archaic.
The “Historical Dictionary of American Slang” which is a multivolume work, has about a third of a column of citations documenting this meaning all through the latter 19th century.
So “I’m your huckleberry” means “I’m just the man you’re looking for!”

Claiming Sam Houston?

That’s a bit of a stretch seeing as he was born in Virginia. Yes he was governor of TN, but he was President of Texas. Country > State.

Hate to say this as a native Texan, but we did LOSE the Alamo. I guess that had nothing to do with the TN contingent? VY would’ve won it, though. Right?

Do you think the Texans should have drafted VY over Mario Williams?

And if so, is it because you wanted Mario, and the competition to have VY?

Glazer also revealed that coach Jeff Fisher admitted to Collins that his hands were tied on the move, and the players believe Collins is free from blame for the early-season woes. Some players went so far as to say that five-to-seven times per game Young calls a play that makes no sense whatsoever.

Things are getting a bit too heated for this game. Emotiomns are running wild and obviously that post is in poor taste.

Steve McNair was a Houston Oiler before he was a Tennessee Titan, and I find that remark to be particulary distateful and certainly it crossed a line that should not have been crossed.

Cheer for our team, but analogies to a murdered player who played well for both cities should not be drawn in this, or any, context.
