Pretty sure they don’t do Astrodome tours anymore. I wouldn’t go in there, it might fall in on you or you might get attacked by a giant cockroach.

true
The Dome had a horrible rat problem in the 80s. I can’t imagine how bad it is now.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.

I don't know
I mean, surely nobody left any nachos around on the floor when they turned off the lights……right?

The Astrodome is currently used to train our military for "Post-Apocalyptic Scenarios"...giant mutant bugs, "Mad Max" evil bikers and other assorted end of the world baddies.
I would avoid it like the plague.

True fact:
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan play in the Astrodome.

Think it was 1986 in the Dome
Fabulous Thunderbirds, SRV and the Who. I was in a skybox party for the show. Never saw a baseball game from that high, but the altitude was appropriate for a concert; Puff, puff, give. Went to scores of concerts, mostly in my college daze in So Cal. Hard to rate guitar players from different rock bands; it’s so subjective, but Stevie was incredible and his moves playing behind his back were hard for me to fathom. I feel truly blessed that I was able to see him that one time before he passed away. He may be the greatest rock guitar player that ever lived.
It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

You and I were in the same place
Here’s what I remember:
The Thunderbirds were ok (I never got why people thought Jimmy Vaughan was any good). Then Stevie showed up, and even though the place was only about 2/3 full, he absolutely blew the motherfucking roof off of the place. My recollection is that the crowd got as loud – if not louder – for Stevie than they did for the Who, and the Who had all the pyro, etc (plus a full crowd) going for them.
Stevie did an encore of Voodoo Chile. I get goosebumps just typing this out. He fucking ripped the ever living motherfucking shit out of that song. I read the next day in the Chronicle that the encore was unplanned but his manager, after hearing the response he was getting, made him go out and play it.
This was after he had hit the skids and cleaned up. It was kind of like a coronation for him.
Holy fuck, what an awesome memory that was. Honestly, I have goosebumps thinking about it.

I wish I had recall of as many details of that night as you do
Spending many of my formative years in So Cal, I was not automatically a fan of SRV, as I suspect most Texans of my age/demograph would be. I went there primarily to see the Who, having never seen them before Keith Moon drowned.
I do remember that the T-Birds were mediocre, but most concerts I’ve been to had one opening act that was typically unentertaining. For an opening act Jimmy V and the Fab TBirds were OK, but certainly nothing special. Stevie definitely got the lion’s share of the talent in that family tree. They sounded better on the radio to me. In fact that’s one criteria I always use to rate whether a band is any good. If they sound better live than on an album, then they are phenomenal. Sound roughly the same, then they are good. Sound worse live, then they aren’t any good.
By the time SRV came on, I was definitely at cruising altitude, and I 100% agree. He was lights out phefreakingnomenal. He was so much better than the Who that it was actually kind of a letdown to see the Who. It is rare when a preliminary act can upstage the headliner, but it was no contest that night. Wish I could get a video of that concert. I would really like to relive that experience. Truly one of the best shows I have ever seen, & I’ve seen hundreds.
Tis a small world we live in my friend.
