Thoughts on Charlie Casserly for a team in need?
Hey Texans fans,
Bills fan here. First, sorry about MNF and good luck against the Colts. I have you guys down for pulling off the upset. It seems like your team is determined and has been planning for a win against Peyton and company all off-season.
As you may know, my team is having a horrendous season and has been publicly going after big name targets for our next head coach and GM. I was hoping to get some honest assessment from you fans on your former GM Charlie Casserly and whether or not you think he would be a good choice for a team looking to turn around its fortunes and build a winner.
I know he was sort of run out of town but he had some great draft picks like Mario Williams, Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels and DeMeco Ryans. He also seemed to bring in good support talent like Domanick Davis, Eric Winston, Dunta Robinson, and Jerome Mathis.
Right now the fans over at Buffalo Rumblings are debating our candidates for GM and head coach and Casserly's name is out there. I would
Thanks for any thoughts.

His draft with Williams Meco and OD was arguably more Kubiak then him. In fact all indications point to him wanting Bush over Willams. AJ was a slam dunk at #3 in the draft.

keep in mind
this team didn’t become a winner till he left.

Dear God.
Heavens to FUCK no. You. DO. NOT. WANT.

Charlie dismantled the Redskins before coming to Houston
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Hearing him talk...
…you really buy that he had football knowledge.
But watching him draft, well…there’s a reason why many of those players aren’t on the team anymore….or are backups/league drop-outs.
If Ozzie Newsome has any underlings, I’d consider plucking an apple from the tree. Ozzie doesn’t miss in his talent evaluations too often.

Look,
I have a little different view, I think he’s a pretty good talent evaluater, but can’t priotize team needs. In fact I almost wish he would have stayed, because I think Charlie and Koobs where a good combo. That said he needs to have a head coach working with him that knows what he wants! I would be very hesitant of Charlie for that reason because I think the quality of what he does is somewhat depentant on the other people he is working with, and you cant predict how that will work out.

General Manager is more than draft picks
It is also salary negotiation, free agents, managing team depth and you are right, a good association with your head coach is a must. But, Charlie, IMO, did a poor job of filling needs and then overpaying, putting the team in poor position to make adjustments or improvements, when needed. He is a talking head, IMO, and that is why he is on TV, at least I think he is….

That's why I think plucking someone from the Ravens would be better...
…Ozzie Newsome does a fantastic job of running the Ravens. Yet, I never hear of anyone getting plucked from the front office as you do with New England. I bet there’s some good talent in Baltimore who has learned a lot from Ozzie.

Good stuff guys thanks
First, let me say I’m pretty surprised that he got so many F votes, so I definitely learned something here.
Couple of things:
this team didn’t become a winner till he left.
True, and interesting that Kubiak gets credit for that great draft you guys had. What makes you think he had more say?
Unless you like ever more years of ineptness, misery and failure
we’ve had that for a decade now, so Lord knows this comment scares me away from Casserly a bit !
If Ozzie Newsome has any underlings, I’d consider plucking an apple from the tree.
Our head blogger over at Rumblings has been shouting the same thing for a few months now. Interesting….
I would be very hesitant of Charlie for that reason because I think the quality of what he does is somewhat depentant on the other people he is working with
Good comment because I don’t like the people we have here and if he is dependent on the quality of others around him I don’t know if hed get that here.
overpaying, putting the team in poor position to make adjustments or improvements
That sounds like a horrible recipe for a team looking to rebuild.
Thanks for the comments guys. And if you have more thoughts by all means keep em coming. I really appreciate it, best way to get info is from the fans in my opinion, as opposed to national media “experts” who seem most informed on TOs latest mishap or anything New York/Dallas related. Hope you all dont mind if I share your thoughts with the guys back on Rumblings.
Looks like the negative feelings for Casserly still run strong in Houston.

not misunderstood, not restricted from succeeding by ownership, he was given carte blanche
he simply bought a bunch of flash and crap, signed it to HUGE contracts and watched the ship he built sink. After 3 years of letting all those contracts die, we are FINALLY running a tight fiscal ship…its way way better since he left. Mario & company was a great draft for us, but the following two have been good as well, and only Kubes has been present for all three…so while I don’t discount his involvment in that draft, the overall mismanagement of this organization taken over by Kubiak overshadows any one draft.
I’d skip him and hope he goes to your biggest rival.

Two words for you....
Philip Buchanon.
Anyone telling you that he’s anything but an “F-” doesn’t like your team, and is lying to you.

Here's all you need to know in 4 words
HE DRAFTED DAVID CARR
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

The Bills are talking about bringing in Carr too.
They must want to be the worst franchise in the league.

To be fair,
David Carr does look better with an established team than he did with an expansion team. Definitely shoulda built the lines up first….hindsight though. Definitely hindsight.

I'm not making excuses...
…I thought it was the wrong draft pick since day 1 (actually, I thought our entire draft in 2002 sucked, but that’s besides the point).
I still think we shoulda drafted Julius Peppers at #1.
Interesting to note: Only 1 QB drafted in 2002 is starting anywhere. 4th Round pick David Garrard.

David Carr
Looks so-so in garbage time and mop-up duty. Just blitz eleven every time and he’ll do his usual fetal position shtick every time.
