This is my picture-story about what is missing from the Texans prolonged march to respectability. I could talk about team discipline; the running game; clutch plays; fit-in or go somewhere else; hard-nosed hitting; hard-nosed blocking wide receivers; not quitting; knowing when and how to take your foot off the accelerator; knowing how to play the refs....

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette December 2007:

Chris Collinsworth - "He just wants to be like an ordinary guy, go somewhere and have a beer and have nobody ask about football."

There may be no way for him to do that, even if he retires to Raleigh, because he and that famous jaw are so well known now. But if that's how he truly feels, he won't coach much longer, at least not before taking a few years off.

Could Bill Cowher  be ready in 2010? Can he possibly be interested in the Houston Texans? This is not Carolina, where he would want to be. But, this team, this owner and this situation presents in interesting opportunity for Coach Cowher. I am not Bob McNair and he is not reading this, but if I were him, I would be placing a call to the blue hills of Carolina for this guy, this week. It will take a pretty penny to entice Cowher down here over other opportunities. I think it will be money well spent.

SMH.

And this post is the one that made me stop taking anything you say in consideration Rip. Good Job.

Thank You!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

This team does need someone to kick them in the ass.

I’m sick of Kubiak’s “It’s on me” speech. For a guy who’s job is on the line…he needs to fight, he needs to call out some people (DUNTA), and he needs to kick a little ass.

Ditto, as Kubiak endlessly repeats his "It's on me" mantra

he leaves McNair no choice but to hold him completely accountable for the team’s string of disappointing defeats. The Texans need a personality makeover, and no better way to do that than to bring in a new field general.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

You want him to call out players in press conferences?

That’s the sign of a weak coach.

You don’t really have any idea what he does during practice. Maybe he tears into Dunta plenty. I’ve certainly seen him rip on Schaub during games. But Kubiak does exactly what he aught to in front of the media: he defends his players. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What I would like to see Kubiak and his staff do is reduce the number of mental mistakes we make

To the extent that a team plays smart, penalty-free football is a direct reflection on the coaching staff. How effectively they execute during crunch time is as well. Not even the most blindly positive Texan fans could convince themselves that we have played clean, focused, mentally tough and well prepared football the last 3 games. Double digit penalty totals have killed us lately. That reflects negatively on the entire team, coaching staff included.

Imagining what other peoples’ ideas are and then condemning them is counterproductive. It would be much more valuable to discuss what the Texans could do to improve rather than praise their current practices. We are not a good team right now.

I have a brilliant plan to make the 3-4 work

We could trade Mario and Demeco for a couple of first and couple of third rounders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo!

by nolander on Nov 30, 2009 6:41 PM CST up reply actions

And then trade those picks for Phillip Buchanan

and put him at OLB and DE!!!

To all Houston sports fans, Houston is the 4th biggest city in America, there will be traffic on the way to your respective sports game. Come Early, Be Loud, Stay Late.

I actually

Think Cowher as our coach would be hilarious. You know, because of how bad we’d be for the next decade.

As Gary says, “It’s all on him.” It’s not on his stupid corner who celebrates a tackle while losing. It’s not on the same corner who showed up the team with his shoes while we got thumped by a team that isn’t that good. It’s not on his erratic offensive line that struggles to give Schaub some breathing room. It’s not on the countless penalties which kill drives or give teams great field position. It’s not on the 1st round DL who can’t get a consistent pass rush.

Gary is protecting these guys. He benched Slaton while he dealt with his fumble issues, but why is he not holding players accountable? Why is he always sitting there game after game saying “It’s all on me.”

But the issue here is Cowher. The no nonsense proven winner who can instill toughness and discipline here. The guy who won’t tolerate the crap we’ve seen week after week.

His system? Will he bring a 3-4 and a power running game to Houston? Who knows? He was in Pittsburgh where they have done that since day 1. Maybe he adjusts to the talent here? We don’t know what exactly he’d do to our roster. Fact is, we’re a mediocre football team (of course, we could finish 10-6 and a bunch of us would be proven wrong, but that’s besides the point) and mediocre means nothing is untouchable.

People are whining that we can’t change to the 3-4. Why the hell not? The Packers JUST did that. They are in the top 10 in NFL defenses. They drafted their NT (BJ Raji), they drafted another LB (Clay Matthews), they picked up some FAs, and they switched some people around (some to good success, some to bad) but their defense is top 10. Ray Lewis made the switch to a 3-4, so did Patrick Effin’ Willis. Good ILBs can stay good. If DeMeco is as good as he’s shown then what’s there to worry about?

Again, this is premature since we’ve no idea what Bill Cowher would bring to Houston because…he’d have to hire a defensive coordinator. Why do people want Cowher? Because he won’t tolerate this crap we see. Because he knows how to coach a team to play consistent football. Cowher knows what it takes to win and get to the playoffs year after year. Why Cowher? Because the product I see needs a kick in the ass to win.

by TexansDC on Nov 30, 2009 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

heres an honest question.

Will Cowher change anything right away? No. he stands on the sidelines. but his influence, decisions, and spit frothing mouth would generate results within a year or 2 and exeptional results within 3-4 years depending on how FA’s and Drafted players pan out (and with Smith, i’m not worried about our drafts). If we had Cowher he would GET a good players for his scheme or motivate the current players to reach their potential which Kubiak isn’t doing.

Kubiak shows by his record that he is an average head coach. he is good at some things, bad at others. would you prefer more average, or (hypothetically if history repeats itself) 1 year of harsh decline as we transition the team to 3-4 and then 2 years to get players to fill it out and within 4 years be a heavy playoff contender? (not due to players or scheme but because of leadership) Also the rebuilding period wouldn’t be as bad as you think because my guess is Cowher knows how to get his players to play and be ready. something Kubiak is woefully lacking in.

I think Mario would drastically lose some of his impact. he would truly be the only hard loss. Demeco Ryans would be just fine. he’s great in coverage and run stopping and God knows hes a good blitzer who gets the chance oh so seldom

If losing Mario Williams for picks or w/e would improve the team in the long run, i’d do it wouldnt you? The team is more important than the individual.

this is hypothetical. just wondering: Would you guys rebuild for a couple years or hope kubiak manages to beat the colts and titans enough each year to have a shot at the divison / playoffs?

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

Been ready for a change

I am to the point where I don’t care who comes to coach Houston – as long as the new coach has some balls to make the tough play calls, get in the players (or ref’s) face when they screw up, and keep a team motivated to keep a lead or bounce back from a deficit ……Hell, I lost faith in Kubiak last season after his screw ups then.
