Shiny, Huggy, Rainbow Unicorns Happy Love Part 2 Colts Thread of Love

Part I was probably the best pre-game football discussion thread in the history of man.  Or close to it, at least.

Here's another discussion thread for the smackdown between your JUGGERNAUT and the Colts.  1000 comments was breaking the Interwebz, and breaking stuff is CFHTim's sole (soul?) duty.

Also...

How big was his loss? Your guys seemed to have stepped up well. Makes it seems like the offense is so payton-centric that it’s almost become a system.

They autodrafted him on my FF team for BRB.

I was a little excited. Then he got injured.

And that’s when everything went to shit for me.

by Jordann on Nov 5, 2009 9:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The Colts have had a 'next man up'

philosophy that serves them well when it comes to injuries. In 2007, when Marvin Harrison got injured, the Colts went on to play the mighty Patriots, who were blowing out everybody. During that primetime game, Gonzales went down with an injury in the first quarter. So, without two of their best receivers, the Colts went on to play well and were ahead by ten points with 8 minutes to go. Unforunately, Tommy boy threw two long TDs to win the game 24-20. And, this year, they’re pretty deep at WR.

What are your thoughts about Collie. I replaced gonzo with him and he’s being doing slightly okay. Im gonna be sitting him this week which might cost me the game but it’s a sacrifice I have to make lol. Do you see him being an integral part of the offense or is he just the “next man up”?

And how come Collie is getting more looks than Garcon.

by Jordann on Nov 5, 2009 9:13 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Collie is the real deal.

He’s here to stay and will be a very integral part of the offense. Polian definitely knows how to draft.

by Ayrshire on Nov 5, 2009 9:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

While we're on the subject.

Do you see Garcon being the odd man out when Gonzalez comes back?

I catch glimpses of the Colts games every sunday and I dont see whats good about him. Just another receiver in a high powered offense. So you think he moves to slot and Collie becomes the fourth receiver or the other way around.

by Jordann on Nov 5, 2009 9:18 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Garcon is a big, powerful receiver.

He’s fast as well. He’s had a few issues with drops. The next couple games will tell a lot. If he continues to have the dropping issue, then Collie will emerge as the fourth go-to guy, in my opinion, if Gonzo comes back. Collie seems to catch everything thrown his way. I could definitely see Collie playing in the slot. He reminds me a lot of Brandon Stokely.

Collie is going to be very good

Collie exclusively plays the slot, Garcon exclusively plays out wide. Collie is like Peyton in receiver form as far as preparation and studying goes, and he’s got pretty sure hands. Once Gonzo comes back, Garcon will go to the bench. Garcon showed his potential the first few games Gonzo was out, but he’s been a big liability the last few games. He still needs more time riding pine, imo. But now that Gonzo is out indefinitely, we’ll have to deal with the high peaks and low valleys of Garcon, you never know what you’re gonna get. Gonzalez plays out wide normally, btw, so I think for the next few years the Colts will have Reggie and Gonzo out wide, with Collie and Clark in the slot. Garcon will find the field at times, and he’ll play out wide when he does.

by yellowsnow on Nov 5, 2009 9:25 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Collie won the 3rd WR job in preseason

because Garcon couldn’t catch the ball. So barring a explosion in production from Garcon whenever Gonzo gets back Pierre goes to the bench, and probably won’t see much daylight (maybe he’ll get another shot as a returnman) unless Gonzo or Wayne is hurt since the Colts like to split out Clark for 4 WR sets and Addai in 5 WR sets.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 5, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Would you really want to see a guy who can’t catch the ball as a return man? We Texan fans have had many troubles with a certain man with the initial JJ returning kicks.

by nolander on Nov 5, 2009 11:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

dropping the ball wasn't an issue when he returned kicks last year

but yeah, I’m mostly just throwing it out there since the Colts are really low on options there and Garcon has far more physical talent than anyone else they’d run back there.

depends on your feelings about Brandon Stokley

Austin Collie is for the most part Stokley Jr.

Garcon is overhyped. He has that huge play potential but if we’re trying to move the sticks he’s the last guy you look at. He can’t hold onto the ball.

Forgive me if this one was in the other thread already...

Does Hagler’s injury affect the Colts D in any way? I know he didn’t win the job til camp, and his backup, Wheeler, is a rookie. Will there be a significant drop-off between the two? Or was Hagler just a body filling a position?

by BigTexBD on Nov 5, 2009 8:26 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The concensus between Colts fans

seemed to be that they didn’t think there would be a significant drop-off. If I am remembering correctly.

There's a report in the Indianapolis Star

that Gonzo is getting a second opinion. That can’t be good. Everybody expected him to be back by about last week. So, nobody is sure what his timetable is at this point. But, Collie and Garcon have filled in admirably and the team hasn’t really seemed to have missed a beat. As far as getting his starting job back, yeah probably, whenever he’s ready.

by Ayrshire on Nov 5, 2009 8:57 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Wheeler is in his 2nd year, he's not a rookie

He’s likely a better pass rusher than Hagler (pre-draft scouting reports on Wheeler called him the best blitzer in the nation), but obviously the Colts liked Hagler’s overall game better. So far he’s seen nearly as much time as a rush end (replacing Freeney for the short period he was hurt) than as an OLB (backing up Hagler).

Note: I love talking Colts, but I’m not participating in any thread that contains what I feel are inappropriate personal attacks on other members.

I think it was just the way you phrased it that caught Buck’s attention.

In other words, if even 50% of yesterday’s thread involves non-football discussions…..well, then there are still over 500 posts related to the game this Sunday.

Your comment sounded as though you will avoid an entire thread, instead of just avoiding the comments/posts that are not football/game related. (Buck, correct me if I assumed incorrectly regarding your interpretation.)

Another Anthony Gonzalez Question

Everyone had high hopes for him prior to the season (including me, considering I drafted him for my fantasy squad). I understand the timetable for his return is a bit iffy; my question’s slightly different.

Peyton Manning is notorious for his attention to detail and work with his WRs. Given that Gonzalez has missed out on the opportunity to run routes with Manning for the past couple of months, doesn’t it stand to follow that Peyton’s not going to have the requisite trust in him to throw as many balls his way as he does Wayne, Garcon, Collie, Clark, etc.? In other words, isn’t this pretty much a lost season for Gonzalez, no matter when he comes back?

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Nov 5, 2009 8:40 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say that

though Gonzo is physically not out there running routes with Peyton he is still studying film and talking with Peyton. When/if Gonzo comes back I’d give him a game or two and then expect him to be back to his normal self. I’m sure Peyton misses him as much as I do.

Indianapolis Colts, taking focus away from my DBacks every Sunday.

by AJforAZ on Nov 5, 2009 10:13 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Another thing to remember is that Peyton

absolutely LOVES Gonzo. Everything I’ve read and heard indicates that Peyton can’t wait for Gonzo to get back on the field. The only way I see a trust issue developing is if Gonzo can’t run his routes well anymore due to his injury. Otherwise, Gonzo’s got Peyton’s 100% trust.

Too much invested during the off season.

I think if he comes back with a few games left in the season, he’s still very valuable. He has put in a lot of work with Peyton in the offseason. As the others have said, it’s not like mentally he’s not keeping up with the game. I think he’s still our second most valuable receiver no matter when he returns.

wow

How did I miss all of this yesterday?!?!

anyway, to continue the current theme: is it possible that Collie/Garcon are simply better than Gonzalez?

Gonzalez was okay playing the Stokley role last year, but hasn’t shown he can play the Marvin Harrison role. Garcon and Collie are more adept at that right now, and Dallas Clark has basically assumed the slot WR position…

by grungedave on Nov 5, 2009 9:42 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Nah

Garcon has dropped a lot of passes and had several penalties the last few games. He’s still a project and has potential but needs some fine-tuning.
Ideally Gonzalez would be back and Garcon would be behind him, learning and getting better. Collie is already showing signs that he’s where he needs to be, even as a rookie. I have high hopes for him.
We might see a good game from Garcon, but I have a lot more confidence in Collie and Gonzalez.

Garcon isn't better than Gonzo.

Gonzo’s best weapon is his consistency. Garcon is the most inconsistent player I’ve seen on the Colts for a long time. The Colts typically have 2 out wide, 2 in the slot, and 1 in the backfield. I expect Wayne and Gonzo out wide with Clark and Collie in the slot.

Gonzalez played the Marvin Harrison role for most of 2007

and played on the outside (with Wayne moving to the slot) in most of the 3 WR sets for 2008.

Neither year he had Marvin-like total production, but he had fantastic, Marvin-esque efficiency. I believe the numbers for his first two years were 12-13 yards per catch while catching over 70% of the passes thrown to him.

From what i’ve been reading, it looks like the colts will be starting 2 CB’s this sunday because of injury. How will those two rookies fare against the Texan’s passing attack.

I’ve been waiting for them to be exposed, but it just hasn’t happened. I’ll reserve judgment until after the game, where they face the best passing attack of this season so far.

Well Marlin Jackson was a starter last year, but since he's still recovering from the ACL tear he suffered last season

he’s been limited to the nickel role.

So rookie Jerraud Powers is basically a regular starter.

by bigfatdrunk on Nov 5, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not true.

There is a specific case for Colts fans. In 2006, Dallas Clark went down against the Eagles (middle of the season) with a knee injury, and the doctor told him it was a torn ACL. The Colts were ready to put him on IR, but Clark got a second opinion, and it was discovered that the injury was only a partial tear. The Colts kept him on the active roster because of that, and he was able to return for the playoffs. He was a huge reason we were able to win the Super Bowl.

I realize it’s one isolated incident, but it’s the reason I never get negative about second opinions until I find out both what they are getting a 2nd opinion on (injury or treatment) and what the second opinion is. Hope that clarifies it a bit.

How much has the changes in the coaching staff changed up the Colts schemes both offensively and defensively. Has there been a noticeable change on either side of the ball?

by papabear on Nov 5, 2009 11:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The Offense seems the same, only real change on the offensive staff was a new QB coach filling the role Caldwell left

On D they brought in a new DC who runs a more aggressive style of Tampa-2. Dungy/Meeks ran a really pure, vanilla T-2. Caldwell/Coyer are more willing to blitz and mix up coverages. The Colts were always the least blitzing team in the league under Dungy and Meeks, now they are just towards the back of the pack.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 5, 2009 11:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think it was a change of pace that was necessary

I feel like the Bucs must have felt. Dungy built this team schematically from the ground up. I think Caldwell is Gruden-esque in that he takes a different mindset to the team that allows them to get over the hump. Lord knows I love Tony Dungy but I think his timidness and unwillingness to blitz and lay it all on the line when it mattered costs us down the stretch. That’s my opinion from what I’ve seen in the first seven games (insert small sample size warning here).

Draws aren't really the Texans strong point.

You will probably see a few middle screens however.

by Bryan72076 on Nov 5, 2009 11:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

screens are hit and miss

you get the same “DEs taking themselves out of the play” effect, but since the play is occurring in open space rather than behind the line the Colts team speed has a much easier time making up for it.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 5, 2009 11:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree

Just saying you’re more likely to see screens than draws from the Texans.

by Bryan72076 on Nov 5, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think why we haven't seen many draws this year

Is the lack of production we’re getting from the interior line, we just can’t rely on a running lane actually being there for the draw and if it’s not you’re looking at a 2-4 yard loss.

for a serious #2 and #3

focus on the offensive right side in pass rushing (Mario at LE?) and the load up the left side in run D (forcing them to run behind the weaker right side).

on O in addition to the draws I’d run a bunch of max protect. Force the Colts to bring the blitz and play man (which they have less experience with than sitting in zone) or else deal with the zone getting picked apart.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 5, 2009 11:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Texans don't really play max protect hardly ever

What they’ll do to exploit the blitz is throw quick outlets to the RB and TE and with most of the defense behind them, leave it to the ball carrier to get yac. Sometimes they’ll run bubble screens to A.J., taking advantage of the 1v1 alignment and taking the chance at a big big play if a few tackles are broken.

by Bryan72076 on Nov 5, 2009 11:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Max protect all game.

The Pats have used that on the Colts a lot the past few games. It has generally been successful.

oh and cutbacks

they like stunt the line with a slant in run D, if you get lucky and the cutback goes against the grain it breaks a big play pretty often (but obviously if you run into the slant then you’re probably stuck in more of a passing situation the next down, which is what the Colts want).

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 5, 2009 11:51 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That you probably will see

With the zone blocking scheme, there’s flexibility to cut to the best hole available on the line and with an overpersuing pass-rush oriented defense there should be opportunity for at least a few decent sized runs on cut backs.

I think this will be the key for both teams. Lets assume the Texans will score a TD every time we get there, since that’s what I envision happening.

they didn't do anything special in the redzone

they played good D overall. The most noticeable thing they did was run a lot of plays with 0-2 down linemen, but 7 in the box to make it hard for Peyton to read the D. Beyond that they abused the right side of the OL and the deep shots Peyton took on them missed or had great plays made by the DBs on them.

….and hate that I missed the Young and the Restless shitstorm.

Hell, there are enough posts here to make War and Peace seem like a magazine article.

So, who wants to give me the cliffs notes on this one? If nobody is willing to step forward and give their best Ace Ventura impression by taking a deep breath whilst explaining how Lois Einhorn is linked to Ray Finkle, then I guess my 7 days off will be occupied with the drama that is Colts Fan vs Texans Fan.

Oh yeah, about the game…

Colts 7-0 record is a bit skewed. Their opponents combined record is 17-33 and included in that abysmal record is only one winning team (Arizona). Sure, the Colts have been impressive in 4 out of their 7 victories, but the Texans aren’t the only team who have something to prove on Sunday.

Houston without OD is gonna hurt, but Schaub is good enough to find the holes in the secondary and move the ball downfield. I magine Shanny will do what he did against Cincy and call some nice screens which will setup some shots to be taken downfield when the Colts start playing a little bump and run. Cover 2 is their bread and butter. Taking them out of that coverage will hurt them dearly.

But, as we all know, its not what Houston does in the passing game that will get them a victory on Sunday. It comes down to ball control. Houston’s only win against the Colts was TOP and running the ball. Miami almost had success with this formula, but they lacked any vertical game to close it out. Houston has that.

The run defense for Houston will be stout again, but the secondary and LBs better bring their “A” game when #18 drops back to pass. Dallas Clarke could be a big problem for the D. Pollard still hasn’t proven he can cover consistently. We know what he can do in run support, but Vernon Davis exposed Pollard’s weakness. Covering. I imagine Reeves and Robinson will be given a lot of man assignments while Quinn and/or Diles will be helping out the safeties in their coverage on Collie and Clarke. It’s gonna be tough, but containing Clarke is key.

I think the Texans give the Colts all they can handle, but it might not be enough. I hope it is, but history doesn’t favor us.

Nice summary.

A little too Texans-homerish for my tastes, but this is a Texans blog. A couple things:

According to Football Outsiders, destroying bad teams is a much better indicator of playoff success then squeaking by against good teams. Check that out here.

Also, I have no idea why you keep putting an e at the end of Dallas Clark’s name.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Viz Media (The creators of my absolute favorite show of all-time and inspiration to my avatar, Naruto) just announced a partnership with the channel Disney XD to bring the English-dubbed episodes of Naruto Shippuden (The continuation of the Naruto series) to that station with a new episode airing each week, starting, well, NOW. With the series recording I just put on it, this is one of the greatest days I've had in a long time. I'm not kidding. I love the show that much.

GOOD NEWS. We too have destroyed bad teams. See you in the afc championship game!
/sarcasm

I think it says alot about a teams preparation and mental toughness. Its the exact kind of thing the Texans would screw up at the last couple years. Squeak by the Titans, and then lose to the raiders. I really hope blowin up the bills, and avoiding the let down game against the niners says we have gotten past that.

I think you're exactly right on all counts there.

And the Texans have looked awfully impressive while the Jags and Titans have floundered. I honestly think that this is the year you guys make your first wildcard. I hope we wouldn’t have to face you in the playoffs.

We still don't know how the Texans would do in the Playoffs

But we know all we have to do to get the scrip for beating the colts in the playoffs is call the charges!

I dont think the texans can snag a wildcard this season. A winning record is definitely possible but not wildcard IMO.

Damn. Im gonna get banned for that am I?

BANNED

Its going to be tough. Even if we win 10 games, that might not be enough. Jets have the edge on us due to head to head. Hopefully the bengals ravens and steelers carve each other up the way the afc east is doing to themselves.

by nolander on Nov 6, 2009 11:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully

The Jets will continue to play worse each week, as they have since Week 2 due to all the injuries and Sanchez realizing that he’s a dirty rookie QB.

Then we don’t have to worry about that tiebreaker.

Losing Kris Jenkins was huge. It changed the entire complexion of that team. Their D isn’t the problem though, its the turnovers and special teams, so we’ll see if they can fix that.

Well that depends...

If it were just based on quality of play i’d say it’d probably be our center Chris Myers, Caldwell is his backup. He’s not terrible, he just gets bullied by bigger DTs all day long.

But really the player who gets the most heat from fans these days is probably D. Robinson, more because of his greedy “pay me!” antics than anything else. His play on the field isn’t God-awful, but it’s not worth a fraction of the $10 mil he’s raking in, and he wants more money.

by Bryan72076 on Nov 6, 2009 7:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Quite a bit of clamoring for Slaton, if you still call him a starter

I say Chris Myers. There is no “true” backup since the interior line has been ravaged by injuries, but in an ideal world it’d probably be Pitts at LG and Caldwell and Chris White at C/RG

Dunta Robinson

because his play hasn’t been very good, and because he is a humongous asshole. Glover Quinn and Jaques Reeves should be the starters IMO.

Dunta for sure, but also Diles

Chris Meyers needs to be replaced, but he does block downfield on screens and such well.

Dunta has been horrible Chris, stop hitting me. Dangit!

But I want X Adibi in for Diles. Diles is OK and he’s having a good year, but Adibi gives us much greater upside and play-making ability.

Note to self: Insert something witty here.

Really are the still X fans out there

Diles is such a good tackler and doesn’t make the mental mistakes, i know he is a little slower than X but is there anyone sill asking for the X man?

by Texans-Brocos on Nov 6, 2009 9:39 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I am.

Maybe after riding the bench for a couple more games, it’ll start making sense for him.

Zac Diles is a good tackler, but Adibi would be a better option at WLB since he has the speed to cover.

by Jordann on Nov 6, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I thought

Beefy kept you in line better than this. The reason we use diles is he is the guy that comes out durring the nickle and we put in someone who can cover. Diles is a better fit to the base D and doesn’t play nickle or dime

You can't fix Dumb

by Texans-Brocos on Nov 6, 2009 9:51 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes it is

And it is designed for run stopping not for pass coverage the LB that would cover the TE is the MLB in the 4-3 under (unless he goes in motion) where he would be covered by the saftey. And with the Saftey also having responsiblity for the RB coming out of the back field. In each of these cases the WILL is a run defender not a pass defender this only changes in 3 WR sets, where the Safty then covers the WR and the WILL guy then has duty on the RB coming from the backfield.

Slot Receiver.

We usually play Derek Anderson or JJ and they’ve been good for us but I wanna see more Andre Davis. JJ is explosive when gets the ball but let’s not forget what Apostrophe Davis did when Andre went down.

Good Question

Dunte is having an average season. He is still one of our best open field tacklers on defense, but he’s been burned a few times in coverage and he took a bad angle on TO’s TD last week that put the Texans in a 7-0 hole in the first quarter.

Slaton is too good to be benched for entire games, but I understand what Kubiak is doing. Fumbling against teams like Indy and New England will definitely cost us possible victories.

Diles is better in run support than Adibi. He is also good in zone coverage, but not great. I agree, however, that Adibi is better at covering athletic TEs and RBs out of the backfield. Adibi does seem to be the better matchup against the Colts this season, but Diles is still the guy at the WLB.

If there was one guy I had to choose; I guess I’d have to choose Quinn over Dunte. I think benching Dunte for half of a game would scare the shit out of him and make him focus a little more on the football field. His play is inconsistent and that is uncharacteristic of him. Dude needs to get his ego checked for a little bit and I think it will have a positive impact on his play.

Colts' Injuries

So what is the summary now? I believe there are now 4 starters(?) out (Gonzo, Hagler, Jackson, Sanders).

I know there have been discussions regarding each specific player and their backup/replacement at the position.

I am interested to hear from Colts fans how this will affect the team as a whole….especially with 2 DBs and an LB out. Does this change any expectations of defensive schemes this week?

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

Hayden is also out for apparently another month

The Colts have been racked with injuries the last few years. They’ve gotten by, but there are certain guys that can’t be replaced (Freeney in ’07, Brackett in ’08) that cost them in the playoffs.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

So far,

all of the irreplaceable guys are healthy. Hayden is the closest guy to irreplaceable, and he’ll be back in a month.

I probably don't know enough to say this but

why were others banned? i must have missed 1,000,000 comments because, er, it looked civil.

Anyhoo, the weakened secondary of the Colts may make it a fun day, but the Miami game proved beyond a doubt that Manning is beyond compare. Should be a fantastic shootout, I can’t wait.
