I'm proud of this team
There is no such thing as a moral victory in the NFL, but they came to play. I feel as good about a loos as I possibly can.
You know... for kids.

With 3 turnovers, 13 penalties, 1.5 quarters of middle school football...
…I’m surprised we had a shot. The team battled back on the road against a good team.
Do I hate the OLine and Kris Brown and not running a play in the 2nd quarter? Yes. Am I proud of the fight? Yes. Texans still in the wild card hunt? Yes.
No room for error. Get it right over the bye week.

Rec +1
Yes we lost, but we played horrible in the 1st quarter on the road against an undefeated rival and still had a chance to win at the end. Im proud of the team for fighting and making plays even through all the miscues. As colts fans like to say, we showed our “nuts of competitiveness” today.

Great. Fucking. Game.
And the Colts somehow sneak away with another one.
The defense showed up with attitude and punched Indy in the fucking mouth. The offense pulled their usual second-half resurgence and fought back into the game. The same exact problems continue to plague us, but all in all, a great effort against the best team in football on the road. Maybe when they come to our house we won’t get jammed up the ass with a one-sided penalty count.
Oh, and the turnover count? Texans: 3, Colts: 2. That’s how it works. Protect the ball.

FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST
No offense, Kiratomi – but I’m so sick and tired of this.
We should not be 7-1 (I assume you mean 8-1)
Let me remind you, we lucked out in the Tennessee game.
… and BOTH the Jax and AZ games if I’m not mistaken – those goal line failures were to TIE, not to win. We lost those games because of horrible defense and turnovers.
We are what we are. 5-4… still in the playoff hunt, still a good team, but not ready to challenge the elite.

The only numbers that matter now
are 20 and 17. McNair needs to Kubiak to task already. How could a team just not even show up against an undefeated divsion rival? Your team has a chance to turn heads and make a statement and you give us that? Enough moral victories, showing improvement, and all that other bullshit. Time to turn a high powered microscope on every facet of the team.

I'm not discounting all the "positives", but
this pattern of one step up and two steps back has to end sometime. It’s not like this team doesn’t have talent or coaches who haven’t been around. Am i pissed about the outcome today. Yes. But, I am looking at the big picture over the past few seasons.
by Jersey Bill on Nov 8, 2009 3:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I share your frustration
To come so close and still end up with nothing hurts like a sumbitch. But there’s a reason nobody picked us to win this (and that Vegas had the Colts at -9). We need to get better, but we did a lot of good stuff today.

How did we take two steps back?
After watching today’s game can you say the Texans aren’t as good as you thought they were? Because that was probably about as well as we’ve played collectively as a team all year. We lost by 3 points to the Colts on the road on a last second missed FG, and the Colts for the most part played as well as they always do. I don’t really believe in moral victories, but there was nothing in this loss that makes me think less of the Texans than I did heading into the game.

I just cant see how anyone can bitch about that game. It came down to the last play of the game against arguably the best team in the NFL. The same things people are complaining about the texans, the colts could be complaining about as well. They ran 3 plays total in the entire 3rd quarter. We were competitive until the end, I can take solace in that, because it means our team is good enough. You should be more upset if they got blown out. Its not like we were going to win out the rest of the season, so I will take this shot on the chin, and get that much more ready to dominate the titans on monday night.

But they didn’t force the Texans to commit stupid penalties or throw a needless interception (the first one. The second one I don’t blame Schaub for). Or fumble inside the one.

Im pretty sure they did force the interceptions and fumble, since they were the ones catching the ball and stripping the ball. ?? They had two turnovers too, I guess our guys had no part in those either. Bottom line, some good plays and some bad plays were made. Thats football. People are delusional in always expecting some perfect game at the pro level.

But that first INT was completely on Schaub. He underthrew a ball to AJ in triple coverage. He chose to throw it there. And I’m of the school of thought that says penalties can be limited by disciplined practice. There’s no reason to be doing things like lining up in the neutral zone or false starting. Those are unforced errors.

no doubt it was. Manning made a near identical bad play himself. No player is flawless, thats football. People are going to nitpick this game for the next 2 weeks, but the bottomline is we played down to the last play against an undefeated team. Both sides make mistakes, thats football, but we are good enough to compete with the best in the league, and we will be entertained every game.

I agree with a lot of this
And I think that we have to always accept some mistakes in our team. But we made a lot of mistakes today. How many penalties did we commit on third down that gave the Colts a new set of downs? We need to cut that stuff out.

Yeah
That’s what I think we need to work on. For me the pain comes from knowing that if we just play with our normal level of discipline we may well have won this.
If we do that in Reliant in a few weeks, we could dominate.

Things to fix over the bye week
Two Achilles heels of this offense:
-RB turnovers (Moats fumble)
and
-Middle OL Play (Blown Myers block on the stunt that caused the INT).
Defense:
-Never cover Dallas Clark with a linebacker again
-Dunta to the nickel CB.

Rivers
I really got the sense that the Texans just decided to allow Clark to get his yards underneath, limiting his yards to some extent and taking the deep threat out of the game. It seemed like Clark was open a lot because he was in single coverage. I think the Texans brain trust basically decided to concede some of the shorter stuff with respect to Clark.
If that’s the case, I actually like the approach the Texans took.
Your thoughts?

You saw how it worked on the field
I thought Glover played well enough for the game ball.
They pretty much picked us apart either way….IMO, the Colts are an offense that calls for a boom or bust approach. We “held” them to 20 points, but that was with the head-scratching Wayne INT, a lot of possession, two turnovers, and a lot of red zone help. That was pretty much the best-case scenario that we could’ve scripted out of that game plan.
Not that there is necessarily a “right” answer to this question. I would’ve liked to see the blitzes keep coming and I didn’t see all that many.

Which is to say, fair point, but I’m gonna devalue that. You guys can ride your Pollard boners up as high as you’d like for it. Totally understand considering the utter lack of quality safety play we’ve seen prior to him.

Pollard’s season, or his play on Sunday?
Cuz I’m just talking who had the better game on Sunday. Big plays matter in the NFL, easy or not.
It was pretty easy for Moats to catch that TD pass, even though he almost dropped it. It still counted 6 points.

Im guessing you havent paid any attention. The play comes in from the coaches, Matt doesnt call his own plays. The fumble happened on the far side of the field. Burning the clock down to the 2min warning was the tactical move to make so when you score you dont give the Colts a free timeout. Blaming it on Matt doesnt make any sense, he was only doing what he was told to do. You are just blindly assuming he was able to see the replay on the field, we have no idea if he was shown in time for him or not.

Banning
Yes, the ban thing is a joke. It stems from BBS’s atrocious, hypocritical behavior earlier in the week. We’ve never banned anybody at BRB while BBS deletes comments that he simply doesn’t agree with.
So when you talk about us being “pussies” or whatever, I’d like something with which to back that up. We don’t censor because we don’t agree.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
by bigfatdrunk on Nov 8, 2009 6:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'll respond to this
Because bigfatdrunk is simply making crap up and getting things confused. Banning from most SB Nation blogs, including Stampede Blue, is not done because one commenter disagrees with another, or with the head writer. If I banned people for those kinds of reason, half of Stampede Blue would be banned over the “Joseph Addai Controversy” which still continues to divide our community. At Stampede Blue, like most other blogs, people are rarely banned, but when they are it is because they are acting like jack-offs.
And several Houston Texans fans have acted like jack-offs this past week.
I had one guy create a fake account on Stampede Blue, create a FanPost called “BigBlueShoe is a Pussy.” In the FanPost he ranted and raved about how I’d banned him for “talking trash” leading up to the Texans game. Of course, I banned his second account and deleted the FanPost. I’ve never seen another fan do that at a rival blog. You’ve set a low standard for fan behavior, Texans fans. Take a bow.
Comments similar to that FanPost were spread throughout Stampede Blue by multiple Texans fans who frequent this site, and after numerous warnings, for some reason those asshat Houston Texans fans. just. don’t. friggin. get. it. When I say stop doing it, I really f*cking mean it. Yet, some of you continued to act like sniveling pricks.
Thus, banhammer.
I’m happy to disagree with any of you about the game of football. I encourage it. Many of you said the Texans were better than the Colts and would win this game. Clearly, YOU WERE WRONG. You don’t see me banning you for disagreeing with me, and being WRONG, do you? However, unless I post a thread that says “Trash Talk Here” (which I rarely do) I’m not going to take to morons and schmucks coming into my blog looking to cause trouble and “start shit.” And for many of you, when the head of a site gives you a warning to please stop, for most intelligent people on this planet, they take that as a not so subtle hint to STOP ACTING LIKE A TROLL! Yet, once again, some of you just. don’t. friggin. get. it.
Many of your more consistent and vocal commentators here have been banned from multiple SB Nation sites, like CFHTim, who has been banned from three. I mean seriously, you really have to be a class-A jack-off to get banned from three sites in this network. Believe it or not, Stampede Blue is not one of the sites to ban CFHTim. Want to know why?
Because when I tell him to stop acting like a prick, HE LISTENS TO ME!
OMFG!
So, if you want to take a lesson from this, take it from Tim. When BigBlueShoe tells you to stop being a schmuck tard at Stampede Blue, f*cking listen to him. If you don’t: Banhammer. And crawling back here and crying about it, as bigfatdrunk looks right about now, makes you look like a loser.
There. Glad I cleared that up. By all means, return to your normal behavior of posting “pictures” of me looking like a moron, insulting my mothers, or whatever ease you Texans fans do to make yourselves feel self important.

BBS will not respond to this post
Here is the last comment of mine that BBS deleted last week. This was a comment on his “game thread” which spent 3/4 of the text berating Texans fans in general.
Obviously, this post was full of trolling and inappropriate comments, and completely deserved to be deleted. It had nothing at all to do with the simple fact that BBS did not agree with my comments.

You have to be a class-A jack-off to delete comments
and ban people just for dis-agreeing with you. You don’t know why I was banned from those other sites, they might have been ran by bigger assholes than yourself. So I don’t appreciate your judgmental words, and don’t use me in any arguments meant to defend yourself. Just continue refering to yourself in the third person, and thinking you are important somewhere else.

Thanks for clarifying that, BBS.
Since I almost never posted at SB, even pre-banning, and since I didn’t do anything remotely resembling what you described in this post, I presume that you are going to un-ban me? Because all I did was state that you were overreacting. Which your banning me kind of proved.

FUCK
FUCK! That’s all you can really say after a game like that. We played sloppy (penalties) and turned the ball over 3 times, and we still
had a shot to tie as time ran out… against what is IMO the best team in the league right now. So one more time….FUCK!
-
I was considering going to the Colts site and doing a fanpost about what a bunch of cheating, classless, douchecanoes the Colts are for the way they were laying on our guys during the last drive trying to bleed out the clock (even though it didn’t
matter in the end). Then I realized that only a trolling fucktard like BBS would do some shit like that….(and the fact I don’t think the Colts did anything wrong at all)
-
Yes, I realize that last bit was an unnecessary personal attack….but fuck that guy.

Congratulations to the Colts. They played a more complete game than we did and I honestly think they deserved to win. I hope they keep it going against everybody but us( @ reliant and hopefully in the playoffs)

That one hurt...
My wife and I were at a local sports bar here in San Diego cheering on our Texans this morning. Shockingly there were a ton of Indy fans and I know there are not that many damn people from Indiana. For the most part I believe they were all Manning Lovers and/or band wagon fans. The ups and downs of this game were probably some of the most painful I have experienced and I have been a fan since day one.
The only good thing I got out of it was that our boys never let up. They kept coming after them. Oh, another thing that was interesting was that this bar is a New England bar. During the last 5 minutes of our game all of the Pat fans were cheering for us and even the owner came over to console me after Kris Brown missed the field goal. I dont know how much of a rarity it is for Pats fans to show some love, but they showed alot of love towards our Texans.

the fumble at the 1
I don’t know if this was said already, but it looked like both his feet were in bounds, he picked it up, still inbounds, and on his own advanced the ball to the 1/2 yard line, then he was knocked out.
How could they possibly say that goes to the 20?

ok, riddle me this
middle of the field, random offensive player (Slaton) fumbles the ball at the one yard line. Random defensive player picks up the ball that is sitting on the goal line. He runs the ball to the five yard line, where he is then tackled.
Do you spot the ball at the 20, or the 5?
Cuz thats what happened on the play. He advanced the ball out of the end zone, then went out of bounds. It wasn’t a punt, or a touchdown, which ends the play when the ball crosses the plane.
Am I incorrect in thinking a ball fumbled into the end zone can be advanced out of the end zone by the recovering (defensive) team?

Maybe I’m changing my mind. Here’s the play (CFHTim, close your eyes):
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81406109/Texans-fumble-at-goal-line
It does look like Powers re-establishes himself on the field, but it’s close. He has to get both feet in to “recover” the fumble. If you believe he is still OOB, then it’s the right call. If he is in bounds, and it looks like that to me, should be Colts ball on the 1/2 yard line.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.

after trying to click
on your link tex my comp. messed up so i couldn’t look at it. from what i remember from the play it def. was close and that second foot if it wasn’t touching when he touchted the ball it is the right call and it looked like it touched at the same time he touched the ball so i thinkit could have gone either way.

ok I'll go one better
the tackling Colts defender keeps the ball in play with his hand. Watch the movement of the ball after Moats drops it. Its moving in the same direction Moats is, out of bounds. Then it moves back into the field of play, touched by what looks like the Colts player, who’s back is out of bounds.
Texans ball at the one. Colts player touched the fumbled ball while out of bounds.
Not only that, but the ruling on the field was no fumble, and without conclusive evidence that the Colts player DIDN’T touch it in the manner I describe above (which it looks like he did to me) you would have to go with the ruling on the field.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
by texanphil on Nov 8, 2009 8:40 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
now there appears to be conflicting rules
on this page under the title EFFECTS:
two things come into play.
1. Fumble forward out of bounds – goes to fumbling team AT THE SPOT OF THE FUMBLE (can’t fumble forward)
2. Fumble out of bounds into the end zone – touchback (as called on the field)
So assuming the refs applied rule two, then they are saying that the ball was indeed fumbled out of bounds, so rule one should apply.
It sucks that the ruling on the field was CHANGED. Thats the biggest problem I have with this.

In your play, it’s defensive ball on the 20.

well one thing to consider is camera angle
on the replay we saw it was close , but ive seen chain measurements with a camera angle that looks like its short when in reality it was a first down , so their different angles on the replay system might have showed just one feet at the moment of touching the ball , they spent a hell lot of time reviewing it its hard to believe they didnt have conclusive evidence.

that a fumble recovered in the endzone can be advanced. or since it was fumbled forwards. i dont know.

if the defense recovers in their own end zone
they can advance it.
The fumble forwards works even more in the Texans favor, since the ball would go back to us.
But I think the ruling was made because the officials determined one foot back in play instead of two.
If they determined two back in play, it should have been Colts ball at the one.

it depends on how he went out.
such as in kickoffs and such if you go out you cant be the first to touch it unless you were pushed out. the push out also extends to other plays i believe. and in that situation i believe he was and then came in. even if not i think it is diffrent when it is a fumble

dunta played him about as well as he could.
i said earlier in the week that if dunta held him to less than 6 catches, texans win. well, he finished with only 6 or 7, and it wasn’t a defensive letdown that led to this loss. wayne was pretty much a non factor. dunta had on PI, butso did wayne. besids the fact that wayne was NEVER open. even on the ones he caught, dunta was close. great great job today for dunta, even if many don’t acknowledge it.

stats
it seems like you argue both sides of the coin.
On one hand, a few weeks back you used stats to prove that our defense, while improving, still wasn’t good.
Then in this comment you say “interceptions != good coverage”. If we get the stats that you wanted, they aren’t good for a reason other than stats. If they don’t get the stats, that proves they aren’t good.

Email I got from BBS after I told him he was being a douche
My record as a moderator for a blog shows that I ban very few people. However, several Texans fans this week posted things that went far beyond a poster writing the word “douchebag.” I don’t ban people for cursing, or writing the word douchebag. I ban people who lack douchebags despite numerous warnings to stop.
I’ll just say that this week in particular, Texans fans (in general) were insufferable. Trash talk is OK, but Texans fans seem to add a mean-spirited doucheness to the talk. How a team as bad as the Texans (historically) can have fans who think they can talk trash makes no sense to me.
But, regardless of that, people who were banned were banned because they acted like jerks. They can apply to be unbanned if they want.

I've changed my opinion.
Previously, I was of the opinion that the Texans played a hard-fought game against the best team in football on the road, and I’m proud of them for it.
My new stance can be summed up in one made-up word: “fuckballs”.

Good game. The Colts didn’t play particularly well, and it’s a little annoying that they play better on the road right now. But a win is a win, good luck to you guys the rest of the season (except against us again).

The Texans played well??? DID YOU WATCH THE GAME?
We played HORRIBLE in the first half.
We played ONE half of fottball and still almost one…..story of our lives.
To even suggest that the Texans played well while the Colts squeaked by is absurd.

The following statement is not meant to disparage the Colts. I know people will take it that way, this is aimed at the league.
As a referee, you can pretty much call a foul on any play. There is always something going on. The refs don’t do that of course because the game would take nine hours. So they call the most agregious (sp?) fouls and stuff that is obvious.
Now whats better for the league?
1. Undefeated Colts vs. New England on Monday night Football
or
2. Texans beating Colts in early Sunday game?
I just find it very odd that we rack up a record number of penalties in the game that could ruin the Colts undefeated season before their MNF matchup with the Patriots.
Ya ya, I know it sounds like sour grapes. Ya we had PLENTY of chances to put that game away.
I just find it very suspicious the way it played out.

Tough break, Houston
Seriously fugly game. I won’t say that either team “deserved” to win but Houston did deserve a shot in overtime, at least. Don’t get me wrong, us Colts fans will take the W, but the Texans had guts to spare out there and you damn near showed our team up. All of the homers should be eating some crow today.
See you again in three weeks. If you cut out the penalties and we figure out how to catch the ball, we’ll have a real showdown on our hands.

Deja Vu
We have four losses. One bad, unfixable loss. And three times losing on the final play of the game which would have sent it to overtime.
We should be 5-4, I’m not saying otherwise. We’ve earned our 5 wins. And we’ve earned our 4 losses. We are not clutch enough to make a play when one needs to be made.
The other side says, well the Cardinals just wanted it more. Or the Jags. But three times in 9 games the Texans needed one play to send it to overtime. Maybe we still lose all three games in OT. But even one win in OT puts us in a much better position, obviously.
We have to decide if we can be clutch enough to make the tough play when it matters most.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

I don't share your opinion
that yesterday was a total disaster of a game.
the first quarter was not good, but the defense kept us in the game, even in that quarter.
The 2-4th quarters were outstanding. If you look at yesterday’s game in a vacuum without considering any previous game the Texans have ever played, I say we lost a tough game, battled back, and beat ourselves more than the Colts beat us.
I can’t look at that game and say the Colts beat us. We beat ourselves at crucial times, and the whole first quarter.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
by texanphil on Nov 9, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
One constant factor in all three losses
fumbles at the goal line. Even though the Moats fumble wasn’t at the end of the game, that could have sealed with win, but Kubiak took his sweet time instead of running a play to prevent the review. That’s what cost us the game, not the Kris Brown missed FG.
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
by The Night Owl on Nov 9, 2009 10:17 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
a lot of stuff cost us the game
the crucial, worst possible time penalties, the first quarter, on and on…
But all that stuff aside, we still had a chance, on the last play of the game, to send it to overtime. For the third time this season. And we’re 0-3 on that play this year.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
by texanphil on Nov 9, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So, you're gonna blame Kubiak for Moats' fumble?
Classy.
Kubes and the offense was doing exactly what they should have. We were fortunate enough to get 3-4 replays on TV that they didn’t have access to, or even have knowledge of a questionable outcome.
How about you whiners and finger-pointers point the blame at the guy who couldn’t hold the fuggin ball?
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

Who knows
We’ve had our problems at the goal line this year. Maybe our drive stalls out at the one and we settle for a field goal. I have a hard time blaming Kubes for that.
I do blame him for not having the team ready to play in the first quarter. But I give him credit for getting the team back on track.
Our defense is significantly better than it was last year. It is now pretty much average and could be slightly above average by the end of the year. If this team learns how to focus and stay disciplined (another thing I blame the coaches for) it will give us some real meaningful games in the last few weeks of the season.
This loss stings, but only because of what might have been. It’s a totally different feeling from the Jets loss.

Not being prepared...
I dunno, man. Is it Kubes responsibility to pass block on the sacks, or misread a coverage and force a ball to Andre? I have a really tough time with the whole “having the team prepared” thing. I think it’s an easy way out when we have a couple of players that, for some reason, take a few series to get going.

I don’t buy it against the colts. The defense game plan might have seemed absolutely retarded, but we got to the half down 13, against one of the best offenses, and best defenses(best by scoring) in the league. We then stormed back to take the lead late in the game. Kubes did his job. bush did his job.

so it’s 3rd and 1, Colts are driving to score to go up. payton drops back, hits wayne on a comeback route, wayne makes the catch, and dunta jars it loose with a helluva play. only thing was….

If he would wrap up runners and take them down instead of being a 1.5 second blur on the screen that is flying past or bouncing off of the runner, I would be ok with him.

He held arguably the 2nd or 3rd best receiver in the league to 64 yards, no TD’s and the longest pass play to a player that makes highlight film after highlight film of long TD scores was just 15 yards – I would take that all day long on a premier receiver like Wayne. We are VERY lucky to have Dunta, Reeves and Quinn whether or not you like the man personally has nothing to do with his ability to play CB. Is he the best to every play the position? No. Is he top 5? No. is he top 10? Probably. There are so many other teams that have problems in the secondary. Listen to any radio show on Monday AM and listen to how many secondarys get ripped game after game. He played well yesterday and we didn’t lose yesterday b/c he got tourched all day because he didn’t. Our entire secondary played great yesterday. Our defense kept us in the game which has never really happend before this year.

Maybe so but you can’t tell me that you agree with Bobo about Dunta being a top 10 CB. That’s absurd. He’s slightly above average at best. He had the potential to be a true shutdown corner before his injury but it’s clear that he’s lost some speed. I really dont know what happened to his tackling but he used to be pretty damn solid. Maybe he’s doing something different or needs to practice it more but it’s something that he can work on and get better at. The speed? That’s forever lost. Just like the long term contract he was gonna get it he didn’t get injured.

The thing is....
Peyton didn’t need to go to Wayne because we were giving Clark all the room he needs to make a catch.
He just went with the more efficient play that would most certainly give them the yards that they need. It’s not that Peyton was scared of throwing to Dunta, it’s because throwing to Clark was a better option.

But, as much as it pains me to say it, CJ is apparently a pretty good one-trick fuckbag.
Now, the caveat to that is, he’s their whole offense, so they feed him the ball constantly. Anyone that fast, who gets the ball that much, is going to break some long runs every so often. Couple that with the fact that the besf’s line is the best run blocking line in the league, and CJ’s gonna look pretty good.
Also, they do have the stats on their side. Basically, he’s gonna end up as their only pro-bowler, and they’re fighting tooth and nail to keep at least that much love.

We’d let the Human Coke Machine carry the ball inside the five and just let him tee on the defenders.

I guess I"m first one out....
Of the “guess the Texans’ final record” pool…I was all-in at 15-3.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Am I the only Texans fan
that said 7-9?
But I did say that before I know how the defense was gonna play.
I change it to 8-8.

Heh I’ve been saying and will continue to say 10 till it doesn’t happen. Even then we might not make the playoffs.

I said 8-8
And I would be disappointed if I was right. I think we might finish 9-7, though.

Agreed. It really does start with our not so big O line. We just need to run 3 PAs from here on out on goaline situation.
