Bob McNair, "Right Now I Have A Coach"
Interesting language from McNair. Kubiak is obviously coaching for his job, although it is up for debate how many games he has to win to save his job.

And so it begins
If he wants to save it, I think 3 will do the trick. McNair won’t fire him unless he has a losing season in my view.
Three seems too doable.
I’d like to see him back, but I want to see him win at least one game that isn’t a gimme. Jacksonville would be a nice start… I don’t think 1-5 within the division warrants bringing him back.
Anyways, something to ease the pain:

HEY IM A BIG TEXAN FAN AND THAT GAME AGINS THE COLTS DID SHOW THAT KUBIAK AND HIS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR DID NOT MAKE GOOD CALLS WHEN THEY NEEDED TO. THEY DID NOT ADJUST TO THE RUNNING GAME IN THE SECOND HALF EITHER I DEFFINETLY THINK THAT!! EXCEPT FOR THAT PIC SIX WHICH WAS READ WONDERFULLY BY THE D THEY DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB>> I MEAN WHEN THEY THEY START PULLING CUSHING FROM THE SCRIMMAGE LINE BY HAVING THEIR TIGHT END RUB HIS ROUTE EVEN ON A RUN WILL LIMIT THE TEXANS TO STOP THE RUN. COACHING IN MY MIND IS A PROBLEM CUS TWO 500 SEASONS IS NOT GOOD FOR A PLAYOFF CALIBER TEAM N DONT BLAME SHAUB HE HAS NO RUNNING GAME WHATSO EVER THEY NEED A PLAYMAKER IN THE BACKFIELD WHO DOESNT FUMBLE!! BILL COWHER SAID HOUSTO IS A VRY ATTRACTIVE TEAM TO COME COACH HE MADE STEELERS A GREAT TEAM AND THEY DIDNT HAVE THE TALENT HOUSTON HAD SO I REALLY DO THINK KUBIACKS TIME IS UP IN HOUSTON

Kubiak must go
I’ve been in his corner since he arrived, but he lost me Sunday. We’re up 17-7, it’s 3rd and 1 at the Indy 15 yd line with about 1:30 left in the half . The running game was working as well as if not better than it had all season. This is 2 down territory. Field goals don’t beat the Colts. The 3rd down call was a fiasco. Schaub throws into the end zone while Dre breaks off the pattern. Even if that play worked, IMO it was the wrong call. We were wearing the Colts down but let them off the hook. The running play kills clock, or forces the Colts to take a TO. Kubiak is still flunking clock management 101, allowing Manning a decent chance to put up points before the half. That FG gave me a very uneasy feeling even though I did not recognize it for what it was…the beginning of the end; of that game and I hope Kubiak’s tenure as well. I do not see that he has significantly improved in his tenure as Texans’ HC. Four years is long enough for him to show what he can do. I am not impressed. We deserve better.
It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

man McNair says some things that have been following my thoughts exactly on how people like to blame a central figure. Gary is by no means blameless but I blame guys like Kris Brown, Slaton, Chris Brown, and Matt Schaub more than Gary Kubiak. Heres a pair of excellent Mcnair quotes:
"The coaches responsibility is to get the players ready," McNair said. "I think they’ve done that. Opposing teams haven’t been doing things we haven’t prepared for. There haven’t been surprises."
"The players have to perform on the field. They have to develop that consistency. The coaches can’t run, catch, throw and tackle. They’re not in the huddle. That’s on the players. Players know that."
Man thats my thoughts exactly. The fact that we have been in every game besides the Jets game makes me feel the coaches had the players prepared. The players are letting the team down. I think Gary as the central leader is going to have to find a way to make them play better, because they are failing to do it on their own. If he doesnt last as coach here, I personally think alot of it wont be his fault ultimately. His players have let him down.

Uh, no.
A friend of mine, who lives a thousand miles away and is very knowledge about sports had the following conversation yesterday.
Friend: “You guys may want to keep Kubiak. It may not all be his fault.”
Me: “How so?”
Friend: “The players bear some responsibility to. Look at Kris Brown. He missed those two kicks, costing you guys those two games. That’s on him.”
Me: “Ok, the same thing went down in Baltimore. What did Baltimore do? They cut their kicker and brought in new ones. Same thing in Atlanta. They started auditioning kickers after their kicker blew a game.”
Friend: “Right. That’s a good idea.”
Me: “But, that’s the thing. Gary has said point blank that Kris is his kicker and that he refused to even bring in any other kickers to even try out.”
Long pause.
Friend; “Oh hell no. He’s an idiot. He’s gotta go.”

So he has to go
Because he’s showing faith in a player that until very recently has been extremely reliable for us? Players have bad games, even bad stretches of games, but if you look at the whole Brown has been a very good kicker for us. It would be silly to try out kickers that couldn’t make the cut from other teams in the preseason just because Brown missed a few. What are the odds you get something better?
No
He has to go because he’s not even considering alternatives. Yes, Chris has been good for us, but he has blown two key games. Kubiak didn’t even CONSIDER trying out other kickers.
by footballfan412 on Dec 2, 2009 10:50 AM CST up reply actions
Two key games.
Im too damn lazy to look it up but I know that Kris Brown has won more than 2 games for us.
Well, sure
He’s been money for us for 8 years. But we’ve also been bad for 8 years. This is the first year the team was expected to really compete. There was a lot of pressure on these guys from the get go. Kris has never faced that kind of pressure before on this team.
by footballfan412 on Dec 2, 2009 10:55 AM CST up reply actions
PRESSURE???
THATS WHY THEY R PROFESSIONALS TO TO DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO TO COMPETE!! ALTHOUGH ITS NOT HIS FAULT COACHING HAS COME UP WITH VERY BAD CALLS THAT HAVE COST US GAMES TO!!!!

How do you know what he CONSIDERED?
Maybe be did CONSIDER it, but like Bryan illustrated, he realized it was stupid.
Were you having beers with Al Del Greco, and he was talking about he’s being doing nothing but working out, and kicking the best he has in his life, wondering… waiting for some coach out there to CONSIDER calling him for a tryout?
Or was it that you were just wanting to get pissed about something and blame the coach for it?

yes we should def. cut a guy we just signed to a new fat contact a couple months ago who isnt exactly old for a kicker yet! Im just as mad at Brown as anyone else but theres financial issues and available talent to take into consideration. And if not cutting a kicker mid season is your evidence that Kubiak is a bad coach then all I can do is laugh.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
Sigh.
Never mind. You guys don’t see it.
This kicker cost us two games, and, it turns out, can’t perform in clutch situations. There’s a reason Pittsburg cut him.
I like Kris, but he’s lost his touch a bit.
by footballfan412 on Dec 2, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions
And there's a reason why the texans stuck with him since the inception.
Because he has the ability to get the job done. I’ve never heard of a kicker that never missed a field goal.
also to further disprove your argument, when Chris Brown fumbled, he barely saw a carry again for a month. When Slaton kept fumbling, he got benched repeatedly, and then outright replaced in the lineup. When Barber and then again Busing busted a play, they got outright replaced for the season. Kubiak has shown he will make a move against personnel when its justified.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
To add to this.
Having faith in a player pays off. Look at Jacob.(fuck, now he’s gonna start muffing punts again) He had the tendency to muff every punt and kubiak stuck with him, And it paid off. He understood that the problem can be fixed and took the time to fix it and it worked.
and to think most of the fans wanted to cut Jacoby in training camp.

looks to me that you are the only one not getting it. So if Kris sucks and theres a reason Pittsburgh “cut” him, I take it you have been here for the last 7 years backing up how bad he sucks? Or I guess Pittsburgh saw into the future and said, “hey guys in 7 years this guy is gonna start sucking, lets cut him now.”
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
No
I think Pittsburg cut him because they felt he wasn’t getting the job done when they needed him to.
I used Kris’ situation as an example of Kubiak’s spotty decision making. I am not saying he’s a bad coach JUST because of that one decision.
by footballfan412 on Dec 2, 2009 11:02 AM CST up reply actions
And the Texans think that he can get the job done.
Is there anything wrong with that? Is it a bad decision? We dont know that yet. So your use of Kris brown as an example of Kubiak’s spotty decision making is considered a fail.
If you’re talking about clock management and challenges, I would have to agree with you.
Yes
yes, I am also taking about clock management and challenges, David Carr. That’s the point I was trying to make. I’m talking about Kubiak’s whole deal.
I like Kris Brown. I just don’t think it would have killed us to bring in a couple of other kickers like Baltimore and Atlanta did.
by footballfan412 on Dec 2, 2009 11:09 AM CST up reply actions
But you're not.
You never even brought it up until I said something about it Charley Casserly and Dom Caper’s love child. That wasn’t the point you were trying to make. You were talking about firing Kubiak because Kris Brown wasn’t cut. That’s what spawned this whole conversation. You imaginary conversation with your fake friend from a 1000 miles away.
so not cutting a kicker who is on a fat new contract and has been one of your most reliable kickers until recently is spotty decision making? Not to mention its not his decision alone.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
I hate fans with a short memory.
During the Dom Capers/Charley Casserly era, our team wasn’t even near competitive. They tried hard, but a win for us was a fluke and losing was the norm. When scoring a touchdown felt like winning the super bowl, our offense heavily relied on field goals to keep us in the game. Talk about performing under pressure. Kris Brown is capable. Football players go through slumps. And the last time I checked, kickers are considered football players also.
FORGET BROWN
LOOK IF WE COULD ACTUALLY FINISH A DAMN GAME N HAVE COMPETENT GAMCALLING AND CLOCK MANAGEMENT WE WOULDNT HAVE TO RELY ON A KICKER EVERY ONE HAS BAD GAMES EVEN STREAKS BUT DECICSION WISE IT SHOULDN BE LIKE THAT

Kubiak has a year left on his contract, I can really see McNair waiting out the final year regardless if we finish with a winning record or not this season, if anything because Kubiak and Smith combine their minds for a pretty nice draft board if the last few years is any indication.

He is also one of the nicest and most responisble businessmen i have ever met. Gives huge chunks of his wealth to charity and goes on mission trips personally to help the impoverished.
A few weeks ago he fired his best friend because he “wasn’t getting the job done.”
If you think McNair is a “nice guy” without the balls to fire Kubiak, you are insane.
NEVER confuse the label “a nice guy” (which in business only ever means he can be TRUSTED) with the meaning “weak”.
McNair is a nice guy in that he is honorable and not a shyster. He will make a tough business decision if he needs to, because THATS WHAT HE DOES.

It was the first year in Heinz Field, a notoriously shitty place to kick. 14 is still pretty atrocious though.
Im still thinking that we can attribute a little bit of blame to dressen
Maybe the snaps are whats throwing the timing off the kick?
If the blame is on Dreessen for bad snaps...
then why is he still snapping? If Dreessen is a bad long snapper, but still our long snapper, than that falls squarely on Kubiak for not doing something about it.

I’m not sure I agree. The Kris Brown example was just ONE example I was trying to point out, and you took it out of context. And, you guys really think that becoming a billionaire is simple. That’s cool. I do not.

I seem upset because im choosing to stick to my guns and disagree with you?
I took it out of context? THAT WAS THE ONLY POINT YOU MADE! You said Kubiak not cutting Kris Brown should get him fired because your friend from a thousand miles away said so. I even brought up the poor clock management and poor challenges by Kubiak and said that those are acceptable reasons why Kubiak should get fired. You never even touched on those subjects.
And why do you keep saying that we think becoming a billionaire is simple. I haven’t seen a single poster saying that it’s easy. Nobody even implied it was easy. Complete reading comprehension fail.
I'm not a moron. You are the one who isn't comprehending
I agreed totally with you about the clock management issues. And his record on challenges is disgraceful. When I heard during the offseason that Kubiak had never won a challenge, I thought it was a joke. There is no debating his clock management and challege issues. They’re horrible. We all agree on that.
It has been stated by me and a few others that McNair won’t hesitate to pull the plug because he’s a very successful businessman and has made hard decision. You and your crew disagreed, implying that becoming a successfull businessman has nothing to do with making tough decisions.
That is absurd.
And don’t say I misread it, because that’s exactly what you were implying.

One of the reasons why I like SBnation
Quote Boxes!
Uh, no.
A friend of mine, who lives a thousand miles away and is very knowledge about sports had the following conversation yesterday.
Friend: "You guys may want to keep Kubiak. It may not all be his fault."
Me: "How so?"
Friend: "The players bear some responsibility to. Look at Kris Brown. He missed those two kicks, costing you guys those two games. That’s on him."
Me: "Ok, the same thing went down in Baltimore. What did Baltimore do? They cut their kicker and brought in new ones. Same thing in Atlanta. They started auditioning kickers after their kicker blew a game."
Friend: "Right. That’s a good idea."
Me: "But, that’s the thing. Gary has said point blank that Kris is his kicker and that he refused to even bring in any other kickers to even try out."
Long pause.
Friend; "Oh hell no. He’s an idiot. He’s gotta go.

These things are awesome because you can quote what somebody said and they can’t deny that they said it.
That was your comment after DaGoat mentioned that the players are letting Kubiak down.
Oh, what do we have here? The first sighting of your reading comprehension fail! And I have a feeling that there’s many more to come.
Your comment consisted of a conversation you had with your (imaginary) friend that’s “very knowledgeable about sports” who lives a thousand miles away(inside your head) about how Kubiak should be fired sticking with Kris Brown as his kicker.
Of course when you say something on a public forum, people automatically agrees with you so you waited for somebody to say “Hell yeah, FIRE KUBIAK!” but nobody came. All you got was a sarcastic response and opinions from people that dared to disagree with you so you decided to throw all logic away and forget everything you learned in school about reading comprehension.
Actually… …you suck, because you totally missed the point.

What point did beefy miss? That the whole conversation you had with your friend was fake because it was really just you talking to yourself in front of a mirror? I think beefy got that, he was just too nice to type it out for everybody to see.
Then another commenter chose to defend Kubiak’s decision to stick with Kris Brown so you decided to drop this gem of “knowledge” on us
No He has to go because he’s not even considering alternatives. Yes, Chris has been good for us, but he has blown two key games. Kubiak didn’t even CONSIDER trying out other kickers.
And that was your whole point. You never said that Kubiak should be fired because of his poor clock management or because of failure to win challenges that cost our team timeouts. Until I brought it up!
And the Texans think that he can get the job done. Is there anything wrong with that? Is it a bad decision? We dont know that yet. So your use of Kris brown as an example of Kubiak’s spotty decision making is considered a fail.
If you’re talking about clock management and challenges, I would have to agree with you.
by Jordann on Dec 2, 2009 9:04 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That when you said:
Yes
yes, I am also taking about clock management and challenges, David Carr. That’s the point I was trying to make. I’m talking about Kubiak’s whole deal.
I like Kris Brown. I just don’t think it would have killed us to bring in a couple of other kickers like Baltimore and Atlanta did.
by footballfan412 on Dec 2, 2009 9:09 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You started claiming that your point all along was Kubiak should get fired for poor clock management and poor challenges when in reality, you just read it. Like what I said, if you read something and you agree with it, it doesn’t really make it your point. Your point was Kubiak should get fired for not cutting Kris Brown and not even considering other kickers to replace him(which is an unproven statement BTW)
I want to keep going but I feel like im abusing the ability to use quote boxes so im just gonna stop there. Unless you want me to keep going football fan?
But I digress. I feel
.
Wow
That took a lot of time. I’m impressed.
Again: I brought up the Kris Brown situation as one example. Yes, it was my first example. Kubiak’s clock management and challenge issues are not debatable. Everyone knows he has issues.
Dude go ahead with your fratboy “Reading Comprehension fail” nonsense.

Yes, that's it.
I feel like I’m debating with a sheltered 20-year-old and wasting my time.

It's sad
That you can’t manage a rebuttal so you decide to talk about my Classic Carr Avatar. Really?
Can you get more creative than that because im seriously gonna consider trading you for Zoltan.
You don't want that.
Zoltan lives in Fricoslovakikraine. That place SUCKS!

Might just be our most consistent DT
I think that alone garners a first rounder on a DT
trade up for McCoy or suh?? Count me in
by AllenOU on Dec 2, 2009 3:43 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Seriously?
You want us to trade up into the top 5 for a DT and sacrifice probably 3 or 4 others holes that we need to fill? DT is definitely a sore spot, but its not our only one and trading up into the top 5 is not worth it all. Plus, the Texans dont have a history of trading up and if anything they are more likely to trade down to accumulate quantity of talent over quality of talent.
To all Houston sports fans, Houston is the 4th biggest city in America, there will be traffic on the way to your respective sports game. Come Early, Be Loud, Stay Late.
Not to mention that we don't need another DT.
We need an NT, and Suh ain’t one.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Who is a NT in college football?
I thought most college teams run a 4-3 scheme and therefore dont have a real nose tackle. If im wrong please correct me, but ive always thought any good college DT can become a NT in the NFL.
