Dominique Barber Returns To Starting Lineup

Per Nick Scurfield's Twitter:

Dominique Barber will start at FS for the Texans this week, Texans coach Gary Kubiak just announced.

Given that this development means John Busing is not starting at free safety and makes no mention of Brian Russell somehow making the dreams of Seattle fans come true, I suppose this qualifies as a positive.

I think this year's events

Will FINALLY convince the Texans to spend a high draft pick on a safety.

If they don’t, there’s nothing that will.

are you kidding me?

that would be absurd.

j/k I got hammered for the same sentiment earlier.

been saying this all year and nobody even gives imput on it :P i feel vindicated

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

I felt the same way

but I think Wilson played well enough to make our other holes more important. I think we could use a 3rd or 4th rounder on a safety to develop him for the future, but I feel like DT, C, and CB are bigger needs than S which was one of our better positions with Pollard and a healthy Wilson…but thats just me.

I feel Cody will be there for us in round 1...

…and the draft is deep enough for us to grab a good S or CB in round 2 or 3.

by TexansDC on Dec 11, 2009 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

I’ll gladly take the best player available at DB, OG, or NT in round 1-3. Actually I would like us to trade down in the 1st and get an extra 3rd somehow so we can snag a RB also.

Not a surprise

Barber saw most of the snaps in the game last week.

Who looks good in the draft?

Eric Berry?
Taylor Mays?
Kam Chancellor?

Any others?

by Jahon on Dec 10, 2009 3:23 PM CST reply actions

agree

We have sooooo many “best available” needs that I wouldn’t hone in on a single position yet.

You know it seemed like barber actually played ok in the last game, but I could be wrong. Didn’t he team up with dunta for a couple pass breakups?

by nolander on Dec 10, 2009 3:43 PM CST reply actions

I thought he did an allright job last week.

He didn’t seem afraid to throw his body into the mix on some hits. I would like to see Adibi get on the field too, might as well see what we have in him in a meaningless game.

He really pissed off Kubiak in the Minnesota pre-season game, apparently.

Hopefully the stuff on 4th down last week got him some playing tokens.

Preseason?

Every time he’s been on the field during the regular season, he has sucked horse-cock. He started against the Jets and Titans, and he was probably single-handedly responsible for about 150 of Chris Johnson’s yards and 3 TDs that first game.

Suck suck suck suck suck. Ugh, draft a safety and resign Wilson. Barber/Busing/Russell need to be off the team, or buried so deep in the depth chart they’ll never see the light of day outside of special teams.

Pardon me if I sound bitter, but I hold Barber and Busing accountable for about three losses this season.

by Nashmeister on Dec 10, 2009 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

I meant Adibi

but I guess I wasn’t clear.

He hasn’t started since he was out of position on the AP TD, from what I remember.

lest I be accused of blaming the coach

we really don’t know, maybe he would remind us of Busing every time he was out there, and be much worse than their choice at WLB.

You gotta give the coach the benefit of the doubt if his starter is not playing that poorly.

Busing is another story. Put Dunta back there, anyone.

Can you imagine the shit fit Dunta would throw? Safety’s don’t make the kind of money he wants.

by nolander on Dec 11, 2009 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think he could do worse than Busing

even if he sat back there and wrote all over his shoes during the play, someone would eventually trip over him.

Damn your black heart.

I told a friend today that I was buying some liquor in anticipation of the 31-17 loss to Seattle.

He is a HUGE Cowboys fan and usually harps on the Texans and me at any chance he gets.

He didn’t say a word and then reached in his pocket, handed me ten bucks and walked silently away.

I have this twisted fantasy that Barber will actually develop as a playmaking FS by the end of the year. Mind you this is based entirely on nothing.

if he does

it will be against

Seahawks
Rams
Ricky Williams
and Tom Brady’s backup, whomever that is.

But it would be cool, nonetheless.

I don't follow college ball

So what’s with all the man crushes on Berry? Has Taylor Mays fallen off?

by Titans suc on Dec 10, 2009 11:53 PM CST reply actions

Yes. Mays has looked shaky on a defense taht has seriously fallen from grace, making berry the uncontested best safety in the draft. Or so I’ve been told. USC did suck horse cock this year.

by nolander on Dec 10, 2009 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

Mays has regressed.

However, he’s expected to run a 4.3 40 at the Combine and Al Davis will snatch him up for his professional track team.

Lol

And recd al davis is batshit.

by Titans suc on Dec 11, 2009 12:29 AM CST up reply actions

I think...

Mays benefited from having three badass linebackers in front of him last year. Now he doesn’t have that cushion, so he continually gets abused. Granted he has made some nice plays this year and he is a physical specimen (6-3, 235 lbs and runs around a 4.4), but I still think he benefited greatly from a lot of players last year.

by Jahon on Dec 11, 2009 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

I was thinking about this yesterday, and wonder how much a reunion with Cushing would amp up his game. Personally I would love to see those two running around together in Texan unis.

Just wait until after the TX-AL game...

Then, the horny’s will come out, demanding we draft (fill in average TX player who will surely be overrated).
You can set your fuggin watch by it.
Jordan Shipley, you think? That may be my bet, since he fits all the requirements – overrated, played well for TX, draft stock right around what’s likely to be our pick range, and completely goes against anything resembling a draft strategy for this team.

Jordan Shipley

is the Tim Tebow of WR’s.

by Jordann on Dec 11, 2009 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

just cause he's white doesnt mean he deserves Tebow comparisons

Like TexansDC said, I think Shipley is a poor man’s Welker. Good punt returner, solid hands, and a good route runner. I dont know how highly Welker was rated coming out of Tech but Id think itd be somewhere close to Shipley. But WR isnt a need right now so who really cares.

by texanphil on Dec 11, 2009 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn’t consider Safety a hole, but its possible our secondary would be upgraded more by taking a safety then a CB depending on who is available, which would help with the hole at starting CB.

by nolander on Dec 11, 2009 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

Wilson and Pollard have played well this season and we have bigger holes than safety. DT, WLB, G, C, CB just to name a few.

That’s gotta be worth something. Maybe he’s not Eugene Wilson good, but he’s not Barber bad.
