Raves and Rants Thread: Seattle v. Houston
Well, that was nice, and it could've (and should've) been better. Still, it was a dominating win with the team showing up in both halves.
What say y'all about this game?

Really liked what I saw from Foster and Barber today

Did we just plug two of our holes?
Foster has decent size, and the next three games should tell us if he can carry the load in the red zone.
Barber has potential.
Pollard and Meco need contracts tonight before they leave the building.

With the way our secondary has been this year
A pick six should result in an automatic contract extension. Hell, that new contract should have been waiting for Pollard in the end zone

without Pollard
we’re takin on water.
He’s filled a major hole in our secondary this year, and I don’t want to envision 2010 without him.
Rick didn’t re-sign Dunta, so we know he’s got good football sense. I think he makes the deal before the season is out. 3 years, millions more than I’ll make.

Foster was good on screens, Barber actually played well at FS. What strange new world is this.
by cubic on Dec 13, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Foster ran like a man with something to prove on those screens. Barber could be the depth we need behind Wilson and Pollard. Would be nice if these two freed us up to get interior line CB and NT in the draft in the first 3 rounds.

When?
When he picked off the ball for the Texans lone score in week 1?
I know he blew coverage on the Johnson play but how many weeks did we have to hold that against him while watching Busing suck even worse?

Well really there was what the two or three games at the start and half of the game at the jags last week? From what I remember of the first 3 games Barber started, screwed up and busing came in. Busing screwed up, barber came back in. Over and over till Wilson and Pollard solidified things.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that was all pre-Pollard
when we were trying Barber and Busing at SS opposite Eugene Wilson at FS. We had no decent SS before Pollard. Once Pollard was acquired everything got better at the safety position, and Barber looks decent as a replacement for Wilson at FS. This should move beefing up the Safety position this offseason down the list of needs. Interior OL and NT look to be the top two need areas to me. Quin and McCain have made Dunta a non-factor moving forward. Ideally we can get a 2010 pick for Dunta, but I’m guessing it will be no higher than a 5-6.

Actually I am just hoping we can salvage something from our former #1 draft pick
If we have to get his name on a contract for that to take place, then so be it. I just don’t see him on the 2010 Texans roster which is why I said “Quin and McCain have made Dunta a non-factor moving forward”. IF we could move him now, that would be an awesome X-Mas present for Rick Smith. But as TexanPhil pointed out he is way overpaid at ~$620 K/game, so that would be next to impossible.

Aside from Kris Brown keeping us from hitting 40 points
I liked Foster’s receiving numbers: 4 recs for 54 yds.
I liked the focus put on getting Andre the ball. We got him involved from the first snap.
The defense played well all game long. 4 sacks, a pick six, 1-14 on 3rd downs (That’s PHENOMINAL), 1 for 5 on 4ths.
DeMeco and Mario played their best games of the season.
Only 4 penalties, so good discipline.
I really didn’t say Fuck Dunta more than once or twice.
Most importantly, we have a shot at 9-7.

The NFL announced the game is under review.
The Texans may have violated the league winning policy.
The league may reverse the victory if it can be shown that players on the Texans intentionally played 4 quarters of football.

There’s talk of Mora being fired, retooling everything, and yet there are still fans of Hasselbeck that refuse to acknowledge he has less in the tank than a broke down vehicle on the side of the road in a MadMax movie.
I would adopt you guys, as I like your team a lot, but I can’t stand that heartache.
I’m going to adopt-a-team here shortly, and I’m GOING to adopt a yearly contender/winner. Someone that is always in the thick of things. Some may see it as cheap, but I can’t take this love for losers anymore. I want a damn winner to check in with.
In fact, I might go TOTAL FREE AGENT as a fan. Adopt the Patriots first— they’re still a safe powerhouse, even if not playing well right now. Plus I’ll have the benefit of being a recent winner.
Then I’m going to once again ackowledge the NBA. Go LAKERS!!!

With all of the talks about the similarities between Texan and Seahawk fans, I was reminded of an ex-seahawk when you brought this up. When we traded for Deon Branch, Darrell Jackson, our former #1 WR, got pissed off when Branch got a big new contract and wrote “I want D.B. money” on his shoes in a game. This was in 2006, he was traded to our division rival 49ers for a 4th round draft pick after that season. Now look at his career statistics;
http://www.nfl.com/players/profile?id=00-0019663
He’s pretty much played himself out of the NFL at the age of 30 after having a great career start. From what you guys are saying, it sounds like Dunta Robinson is taking the exact same career path as our guy.

After all the crap Dunta pulled in the last year
I can only see him playing for the minimum with a different club. His ego is too big to get “paid” the min by Rick Smith. If we can’t get a draft pick for him in a trade, then it would be fitting if that is the end of his career. He is playing so poorly right now that I think that is a real possibility.

A little overdramatic.
This is not the end of his career.
What’s likely to happen is he’ll get a short-term, low priced contract….and if he’s still got the skills we used to see, he’ll be motivated to earn his money.

I agree
I try to temper my anti-Dunta feelings with the knowledge that the quality of his play now isn’t the product of his own doing, it’s from putting his body on the line wall playing balls to the wall for us. I think deep down he knew he wasn’t capable of being that same player and in fear of his financial future freaked out and demanded a long term deal before the rest of the world figured it out too. You can’t really blame him for that, at the end of the day we all have to look out for ourselves first, and that’s all he’s guilty of. He probably knew once he stepped on the field this year his value would go down to the Texans and other teams so wanted to secure his future now as opposed to next year when he’ll be worth much less. While he’s still a serviceable CB, he’s no longer capable of being a #1 CB, and he’s probably only an average to slightly above average #2.

Yeah I noticed
That was particularly evident on one long running play in the 2nd half yesterday. A good player (i.e. the pre-injury Dunta) would have made a pursuit angle and hit the RB b/w 5-10 yards downfield. The present Dunta managed to pursue half-heartedly, not even attempt a tackle, and completely avoid the pile at the end of the play.

AJ needs to catch 10 a game…Brown should still never touch the ball, Foster should get most of the snaps…Texans should go for it on 4th down since Kris cant hit a FG….Caldwell Should replace Myers at Center…Dunta should be traded for ANYthing…Pollard and Wilson are the future Safeties with Barber providing depth for us…We might have the best LB’s in the league…Mario is playing better…Barwin is gonna help us alot next year…Kris/Chris Brown/White/Myers all stink…
looks like i covered it

The only thing that kills me
is that everyone keeps calling for a Dunta trade a month after the trade deadline. Unless they franchise him again and trade him (which would pretty much prevent anyone from wanting him) then he’ll just go quietly into the sunset and hopefully not find his A game again against us.
by sammocyr on Dec 13, 2009 9:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The only that should get the franchise tag is Owen Daniels
Coming off the ACL injury, that’s the logical option. However, his agent will have a strong bargaining point in he was on pace for a pro bowl season & that we lost 4 straight games after he went down, therefore saying he was that important to the offense & he’ll deserve a long term contract
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
by The Night Owl on Dec 13, 2009 9:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
why not sign OD
I guess you see if he comes back 100%, and if he has a good first half of 2010 lock him up for 5 years.
If the injury is not a concern, he’s a cornerstone of this offense, he needs to be here.
And I was a firm believer in “insert TE here” in this offense until OD went down. Boy was I wrong.

His agent has a strong argument for a long term contract, but Smith might be cautious cause of the ACL. They might tag him to prevent anyone else from signing him & negotiate from there.

we can give him a 1 year contract
he’s a RFA, so we have right of refusal.
Mount Cody in round 1
by texanphil on Dec 13, 2009 10:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Possibly wrong
I believe OD will only be an RFA if the CBA doesn’t get their shit worked out in the coming months. Otherwise, he should be a UFA.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
by Shake on Dec 14, 2009 8:08 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he's an RFA either way
according to this
So Smith hit the jackpot business wise re:OD. We can see how he returns, and decide if we want to give him that one year contract. If he declines, we have the right of refusal route as a backup.
Mount Cody in round 1
by texanphil on Dec 14, 2009 10:04 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
How are you interpretting that?
If the CBA is renewed, then OD is a UFA. He has met the definition of having 4 seasons under his belt, and his contract ends this year.
Am I missing something?
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
by Shake on Dec 14, 2009 1:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Those are the terms of the current CBA
Without a CBA
(from the linked article)
The biggest change is to the rules of free agency. Currently it takes 4 years in the league to become an unrestricted free agent. With an uncapped year it takes six years of accrued service to be a UFA. Teams will have one franchise tag and two transition tags available to them.
So OD would not be a UFA because he has only 4 years of service, not the required 6. Same for DeMeco.
It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

Agreed
That’s pretty much what I said in my initial reply to this…..but Phil is saying that he’s an RFA “either way”. Which is not true. At all.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
by Shake on Dec 14, 2009 2:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It's not OD that im worried about.
It’s DeMeco.
We have 14 players that are headed to the FA this offseason. One(Cunta) is a franchise player. Two are RFA’s(Brisiel and DelJuan Robinson). The rest are UFA.
That’s if the CBA is renewed. If we’re headed to an uncapped year, we’re gonna have several UFA’s that will become RFA’s.
Ryan Moats (3rd pick. But im not sure what compensation we’re gonna get if another team matches our offer because the eagles were the ones that drafted Moats)
Owen Daniels (4th Pick)
Rashad Butler (I don’t think we’re gonna be resigning him)
DeMeco Ryans (2nd Pick)
I honestly don’t think that we’re gonna let DeMeco go unless he gets an offer that we couldn’t possibly match.
If he does go, expect us to draft a MLB or sign a FA because we don’t have any other player that can take his place.
If Smithiak resigns the big three for cheap(Meco, Walters, OD), I would consider him a good amongst men.
by Jordann on Dec 14, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If re-signs them for cheap...
extend his contract. I think we’re in good GM hands. I’m not going to stress about re-signing players.
If things do go uncapped…it’s not like the Texans are poor. We’re the 4th largest city, the Texans are like 5th in wealthiest franchises, and McNair is pretty loaded and committed to winning.

Looking at next week
Texans (6-7): at Rams
Jags (7-6): vs Colts
Miami (7-6): at Tits (6-7)
Baltimore (7-6): vs. Bears
Denver (8-5): vs. Raiders
The Texans get the easiest game. If the Tits and Colts win then you have 4 teams at 7-7 with 2 remaining. The Raiders have played up at times…so who knows? Maybe they knock the Broncos down to 8-6…..the Bears/Ravens could go either way so the Texans could be tied for the 2nd spot or 1 game behind both spots. And it’s entirely plausible.
For the record, I don’t think the Texans will make the playoffs but it’s still week 15 and we can talk about it…might as well.

We have to win out, which judging our track record won’t happen. It’ll almost happen, but not quite… Besides winning out a number of teams have to lose 2 out of 3 games they have left. I am happy for the win but disappointed at the same time. They only scored 3 offensive points in the 2nd half. Andre Johnson could have challenged the NFL record for catches but they threw to him 3 times in the 2nd half for one catch. Shaub could have thrown for 500 yards and 4 tds. He had 336 and 2 tds at half. But just like always they take their foot off the gas and try not to lose. If they wanted to run and run the clock out they should go to their best run play, the screen pass, or the check down pass to the RB. The Defense was great, Kubiak is a offensive genus until he has the lead and wants to run the ball. He lacks killer instinct!!! Tits ran the score up. Ravens ran the score up. Why cant we? Our guys needed that to get our swagger back. In stead they get to look back and realize that they only scored three points in the 2nd half. NO KILLER INSTINCT!!!!

What is this, the third time this has been posted in this thread?
Things Gary Kubiak can’t control once the roster has been set:
-Kris Brown missing field goals
-Chris Myers being terrible at snapping the ball (and other things)
-Someone tripping on their route.
In fact, Kubiak led off the second half…a second half that started with us winning by 17, with a play action pass bomb to Walter. It didn’t work, because Schaub led Walter a little bit. If you don’t think the Texans came out and tried to step on their throats, then I’m not sure what game you are watching. Some of the in-game thread commenters even wanted him to run earlier.

And I wasn’t disappointed. Grant it, we missed a couple of opportunities to score some points(im looking at you Kris Brown). But all in all it was what I wanted to see. A Texans offense taking control since the first play of the game, to the defense stepping it up.

Plus he has to play against Patrick Wilis. And as we all know, since Patrick Willis came into the league, the 49ers have never given up a single yard of rushing.

It was a great winning strategy
The defense played right through. The number of tackles behind the line of scrimmage was astounding. That is what we have been waiting to see. The defense is improving.
Right now, I am starting to rethink my previous musings about dismantling the coaching staff. If this team can come close to performing like this 75% of the time, they will be in the playoffs next year. Perhaps, all this team needs is a few more players in key positions, further development of their recent draft picks, another good draft, and who knows. The defense really rose up and played yesterday. Everyone filled their role and filled it well. I think there are some real players on this defense. I really do. A few holes to fill still, but that is what needs to be worked on over the off-season. The defense is young, athletic, and teachable. One more year of maturation and they may become dominant every game for an entire season.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

"KILLER INSTINCT" is a big-time game
If we’d just paid to have the coin-op airlifted to the Bills locker room, Owen Daniels would have spent the first quarter enthralled with the semantics and combos of Fulgore and never would have torn his ACL.
In fact, I hear that if Mario Williams doesn’t get 8 hours of “KILLER INSTINCT” in every day, his shoulder starts convulsing and he collapses into a heap.

I can't disagree with any of this...
but I still wonder why we’d be a game short. Do teams that play “KILLER INSTINCT” not have to play games on the same schedule as everyone else? I mean, that would make sense, as having that kind of “KILLER INSTINCT” should make you above the general rules of a pansy organization like the NFL, but I still need clarification.

I'm just gonna throw this out there...
What was different in yesterday’s playcalling than any other game this season?
The answer: Nothing. It just looked a shitload better because the players did what they were supposed to do.
Honestly, I didn’t even feel like Kubes “let off the gas” until the 4th, even when I hoped he wouldn’t, just so the sewing circle of commenters here wouldn’t whine and finger point about “KILLER INSTINCTS” and the like.
And yet… there’s still a couple of whiners.

The only difference I really noticed...
Was the conscious effort at the beginning of the game to get the ball in Andre’s hands. Aside from that, it was pretty much the same.
by TexansDC on Dec 14, 2009 5:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
And to add to that...
If you’ve seen the locker room post-game, Kubes did say that the 4th quarter was all about trying to get Andre the Texans team record for receptions and yards.
So “when let up” he was really trying to give his best player a spotlight.
by TexansDC on Dec 14, 2009 5:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
This.
I mostly agree with ya, Beefy. But I saw some big differences in play calling on Sunday.
And this^ was the biggest. Name more than 4 games this year where AJ has been specifically targeted 15+ times. Hell, there were a few games that Baby Shan must have spilled coffee on his playbook, ruining only the pages with Andre as the #1 option.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
by Shake on Dec 15, 2009 8:50 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
you wanted him to keep his foot on the gas
unless I’m reading that wrong.
I agree, he didn’t let up. This has not been the norm this season, and was a welcome change.
But if I read what you wrote correctly, then the answer to your first question is very obvious. The difference in playcalling in the second half of this game and the Raiders game is obvious and dramatic.
We won the Raiders game, but I feel it set us up for games like the Indy 2.0 game.
So we learned a lesson, and fixed it yesterday. Kudos to Kubiak.
But the playcalling was superb yesterday, imo. The players did not make the playcalling look any better. The fact there were no momentum killing Kubiak-admitted playcalling gaffes that potentially cost us the game was the correct answer to your first question.

No, I wasn't alluding to that...
With the lead we had, I was completely fine with trying our best to run out the clock, but I did want him to keep gunning for more points because I knew people would be complaining about him going conservative to run clock, and I’m just sick of that. So, yes, you’re prolly reading THAT correctly… I just want the team to do shit that will shut up the people that annoy the piss out of me.
Also, your last paragraph sounds like you don’t agree with me at all. You’re saying that we won because Kubes didn’t fuck it up, and I’m saying he did nothing different than pretty much any game all year on offense. I agree with others comments about specifically targeting Andre3K, however. Good point.

we didn't run
a low percentage gimmick play in a crucial situation.
A specific example of the elephant in the room regarding playcalling for me.
I disagree with the playcalling in the second half of the Raiders game because I feel it cost us the game v. Indy. I disagree with the halfback pass last week.
Other than that, I don’t have a huge beef with Kubiak’s playcalling. Indy2 and Jax2 were two huge games, however.

At the stadium I thought I saw Cush pull a “scoreboard” on a Seahawk he tackled in the 4th quarter that wanted to run his mouth. Really hoping they showed it on TV, nothing to complain about after the dominant win. Kris Brown is no Brad Lidge, don’t draft Suh, but always….Fuck Dunta.

he did...
and they actually mention it. again, GOOD JOB BY THE FOX ANNOUNCERS.
Michael: It is going to up in Tahoe a couple more days. Maybe you could take a date?
Lucille: How am I supposed to find someone willing to go into that musty old claptrap?
Michael: The cabin... yes! That would be difficult, too.

So i guess your telling me that the seahawks defense was suddenly outstanding in the 2nd half? Allowing only 29 yds passing. We had 38 yards in the 3rd qtr on 3 possessions and 51 yards in the 4th qtr on 5 possessions. 3 POINTS! Thats it. And you say we didnt let up, bullshit. They let up. Shaub had 336 yards at the half. 29 in the 2nd half. They let up. Or you can blame the lack of production on the Seahawks powerhouse defense, and the impressive adjustments they made at halftime. Bullshit, just like I said.

I called bullshit on the guy that said we didnt let up, not the score. Texans let up. Plain and simple. Patriots would have scored 50pts. The difference between a good team and a great one.
by big daddy texan#1 on Dec 14, 2009 7:08 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
34-7, 50-7....
Who cares? The Texans got the lead and tried to run the clock out. That means runs and short passes. That’s what teams do when they are winning big because it would be stupid to continue to throw the football deep (holding onto the ball for 5, 6 seconds) when your quarterback had his shoulder dislocated a week ago.
Let up? No. The defense didn’t use zone. They were aggressive and attacked all game.
Let up means series of 100% rushes and 100% zone.
What’s bullshit is that the entire fan base can’t seem to enjoy winning 34-7 and keeping playoff hopes alive. Instead, there are people who are pissing, whining, and moaning that we didn’t score 50 or throw for 600 yards.

going for 50 points?

I Agree
They let up………………I was telling my EMT partner just that,as we watched the end of the first half. Sure enough the second half was that of the tried and not so true…Try not to lose zone play……I too, thought the play calls were too conservative….But a win is a win
by flitemedic on Dec 14, 2009 7:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You'd be calling Kubiak a dumbass if he went 100% aggressive
and AJ’s hyperextension turned into a tear.
Stop complaining about a decisive win. I agree, it could have been better, but the fact that we could kind of just jack off for an entire half without anything horrible happening is a GOOD SIGN.
by Karsh on Dec 14, 2009 8:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Is there any evidence to support the idea that they used a lot of zone in the second half?
We crushed them on the defensive side of the ball in the second half. There was no let up.
Successful teams don’t establish the run, they use it to kill the clock. Calling running plays is smart – even when they don’t work. You take about three minutes off the clock for every set of downs you get if you run the ball. The clock is just as much your friend as the scoreboard. If you’re ahead by twenty seven points and you know you’re going to have two or three more possessions in the half at a minimum (and more likely five or six) you can figure that you’re pretty much going to run the clock out (unless you’re playing the Colts) even if you have a bunch of three and outs.

Watching us play you guys...
I was also watching my keeper league GEM Andre run wild… in a game that didn’t really matter to me being out of the running. But, I was fortunate enough to match up against him in a money work league.
I was down -2.58 to +48.95 at one point.
Somehow I came back to win. I’d like to thank Tennessee’s D for being on the waiver wire, along with Quinton Ganther, and I’d also like to thank Ray Rice and AP for coming up BIG when they were needed.

AP, Andre, AND Rice? Yeesh. How did you not make the playoffs?

Hold up...
combo statement there. In my keeper league I have Andre but am stuck in 3rd place playing the 2nd place team 2x’s and the 1st place team in my final three games— and I’m 3 behind them both. And there are no playoffs there… I’m just hopeful I finish 3rd and get my money back (100 per year.)
In my year-to-year money league, I finished 6-7 but made the playoffs in the 6th spot. 10 team league, and I’m still shocked my team isn’t better record wise…. but I think it is built for the post season.
Carson
AP
Ray Rice
Boldin
Jennings
Finley/Fred Jackson at TE
Slaton, Kevin Smith, Percy Harvin, Nate Burleson for my flex.
Cincy for D
Gostkowski
Obviously I dumped Slaton (for Quiton Ganther) and now Kevin Smith (for your boy Arian Foster).

Maybe your right, I would feel pretty stupid if a key player got hurt going for 50. I just wish I could see our team play a full game at that level. Or full season would be even better. We see what they are capable of and it frustrates me to see them lose close games. I cant help but feel that if they were more aggressive on offense throughout the season, for full games, they would have won most of those close games. I was at the last colts game and they were very powerful in the first half then got conservative in the 2nd and lost the game. Also, crushing the life out of the seahawks would have eased some of the pain of a 4 game losing streak. And I am pleased with a 34-7 win, just wanted them to unleash the power. And I never said the defense let up, they were impressive for 4 qtrs.

That time will come man.
I know it’s hard to tell you to be patient after years of mediocrity but it’s worth the wait.
Our offense is capable of putting fifty. That’s if we’re involved in a shootout where the opposing team can keep up with us. We’ve been aggressive when we needed to be and that’s what matters the most. I hate seeing the prevent offense on the field but if we had the right personnel for it, it’s really not that bad. Losing the close games sucks but hey, that’s the NFL. You win any given sunday. Sadly, those sundays that we lost are not ours. Keep cheering on the team man, we’re heading the right direction. Our time will come.
by Jordann on Dec 14, 2009 9:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The prevent offense...
….just means a rushing game. We simply cannot run the ball. However, throwing the ball is risky when it could easily turn into a pick 6 or not run any time off with incompletions. It’s a mixed bag really…
The defense, on the other, hand….should never go into zone. They should always be aggressive. Aside from one stupid 2 minute drill, the defense was exactly what I wanna see. Sacks, turnovers, and getting off the field on 3rd down.

PLUS
Whenever we can take time to work on the running game, we should.
I felt the 2nd half was very different from the Raiders’ game. I think we were still pushing the ball.
Hill was lost for the year with a torn ACL. What would you say if that was Casey? Or AJ?

agree
the Raiders playcalling, this was not.
I saw the same offense until middle of the 4th, where its smart to shut it down.
On that note, Rex shoulda been in there for the 4th. He needs it, and Schaub doesn’t need the exposure.

Have you ever watched one of those 50 pt blowouts?
Do you realize how it gets to 50 pts?
It’s not because a coach is running hail mary’s every play, trying to set records (apologies to all douche tech fans). It happens when one team is up by 28-30 in the second half, and the subs start getting their big chances. Well, the other team has to become one dimensional, so you’ll see alot of pick 6’s, sack/fumbles, and short fields for the offense. At that point, ANY offensive play that’s not a kneel down is going to score at least 3 points, for the most part.
