The Captain’s Ship is Taking on Water

I’m sure this won’t be a popular subject, but, this is a subject that the Texans, and GM Rick Smith, Owner Bob McNair and current Coach Kubiak will be seriously discussing at the end of this season…after the dust of another disappointing season has settled; and that is, how much is Defensive Team Captain DeMeco Ryans worth? I am of the opinion that his value has depreciated as the season has gone on. His play and his influence on the play of the defense as a whole have diminished.

Ryans has not been THE shining star on this underperforming Texans defense, as we would have expected. Rookie Brian Cushing has been that guy. But Ryans is the captain…,the leader…, and he is supposed to be the "coach-on-the-field"!  This was supposed to be the breakout year for the Texans’ defense, but his lack of leadership has let the team down. Heck, even his own individual play has not been near stellar. Pedestrian, is how I would term his play compared to how he has been built up by the media and the fans. It is time to be realistic. This is a contract negotiation year for Ryans, and while I am not saying that there is anyone on this team standing by ready to take his place as the captain of the defense; I am saying, he is no Patrick Willis, and I’m not talking about the superhero Patrick Willis.  I’m talking about the one who suits up in a Niners uniform every Sunday…Ryans’ counterpart playing for another team, Patrick Willis, who will be comparing contracts with The Captain.

Against Willis’ Niners team, Ryans allowed TE Vernon Davis to have his "welcome to the hall-of-fame" career day with over 100 yards receiving and three TD’s! Did anyone see that play against the Colts last weekend? The Colts are at the 5-yard line and Ryans was playing 5 yards in the end zone at the snap, backpedals as the receiver floats one yard deep into the end zone, and Manning, as surprised as anyone, delivered a lob to the wide open receiver, right in front of the stone statue of Ryans.

How about the now-famous defensive celebration involving half the defensive players on the field after the Dunta-hit, followed by the Colts quicksnap 30-yard pass on the next play as the DeMeco-led defense tried to get back into their formation. Ugh!

I expect more from all the Texans, but I especially expect more from "The Captain!" If there is one player on the field that has to share the blame for the 5-6 record, it is DeMeco Ryans. He better get his act together quickly, because the Jags with Maurice Jones-Drew and David Garrard are just the kind of team that will exploit the middle of the field.

Comment Flagged as Troll

That comment was made by the same blogger who has to remind us of all the journalism degrees he has all the while thinking that it is good form to say that he would like to rape a responsible journalist with a rusty chainsaw and tried to get us to think that Brian Cushing was a steroid-user, a cheater, and didn’t know how to tackle, and he did it before the player even played a down for the Texans. Sir, your response to my fanpost is nothing less than a continuation in your troll-ways that you accuse others of.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Why are you on this blog? Are there no others? If you hate the bloggers that much why be here?

by nolander on Dec 2, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why do you join in on the trolling, is a better question?

Is it because, like the first troll, you don’t like it that a rookie has supplanted your idol as the star of the defense?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Funny, cause you know, I always liked the Cushing pick, so yes that must be it.

You can think whatever you want....

I’m not on any pedestal. Cushing has had a great season. If he fell down, I would have rightly admitted I was wrong about him. The Texans need more like him. I’ll probably buy a Cushing team jersey and put it under bfd’s Christmas tree.

I’m a huge fan of Schaub, but he stunk it up last week in the 2nd half. I have confidence that he won’t do that this week. Am I up his ass? No.

I didn’t say you were on a “Cushing is good” pedestal. What I was saying is you obviously take great satisfaction in your false belief that everyone else but you was wrong about Cushing, and once I pointed out to you that I have been behind Cushing the whole way you changed the subject.

DeMeco is a very good linebacker. Letting him walk would be a horrible decision.

Who is good enough to take his place?

Cushing.

According to Rip.

by Jordann on Dec 3, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Then who takes Cushing's place on the outside?

DeMeco may not be having his best year, but if you compare his play across the league he is EASILY in the top 20 linebackers. Actually probably beter than that statistically.

I just can’t see any reason to give him up, he is a VERY good player.

I didn't read the fan post so I dont know what the heck is being talked about.

But you’re right. There’s no reason to give Meco up. Cushing may have the mean streak and the stats but Meco is the heart of the D. I dont think Cushing is capable of leading the D just yet. I can see his potential but to replace Meco with Cushing next year would be absurd.

wish I could get the 30 seconds back I spend skimming this. When you put better players around your leader, his production will spread out among them. Demeco is a great MLB and I have no doubt he will be resigned.

I think he'll be back

They’ll give him a run of the mill MLB contract, big enough to keep away other teams, but low enough not to waste money. Status quo for the linebackers. I think we’ll have the same crew next year.

Take meco out of the middle and watch the defense collapse even worse then before. Why can’t we just say that Meco and Cushing are both awesome, and admit its hard to evaluate them on equal ground because of the differences in their responsibilities? SLB are notorious for racking up big numbers.

Exactly. Now Rip, this doesn’t mean we don’t think Cushing is good, it means we think most of his stats are useless when comparing him to Meco.

Demeco was the only talent back there for years, now that he has some supporting cast, his numbers will naturally go down. It doesnt mean hes lost anything, it means other guys are making plays so he doesnt have to every time.

I think Ryans has lost his concentration this season

He seems to have taken a lot of plays off. I’m not saying he doesn’t still possess the talent of a top-notch LB. I’m saying he has played average this season and I am surprised, with this being his contract season. I would have expected more.

I think this season will effect his negotiating leverage. The team sure doesn’t want to lose him, but if he is able to get free agent offers from other teams, I don’t think he will be worth as much as some might think. I believe his play has put the Texans in a good position to sign him for less and save a few nickels.

I just don't see it that way.

In fact, I think if the Texans try and get away with less, he will get picked up by another team.

by Jordann on Dec 4, 2009 8:42 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Perhaps you are mistaking playing his responsibilities instead of feeling he has to run all over the place because he can’t trust anyone else to do their jobs with taking plays off? I don’t know, you seem to be the only one who has seen these plays.

by nolander on Dec 4, 2009 11:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I specifically recall the play from the Colts game

And if you had read the fanpost, you would see I am repeating myself, where the Colts had the ball around the 5 yard line and Ryans set up 5 yards deep in the end zone and then after the ball was snapped even took a step back. There was never a Colt player that came out there to him. I think it was the) that made a quick block and moved to 1 yard deep in the end zone and made the open TD catch and Ryans never made a move. If that isn’t taking a play off, I don’t know what is.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 4, 2009 12:02 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Go to 2:53

Here’s the play I am talking about. From the Texans 6 yardline. DeMeco lines up at the 1 yard line and backpedals into the endzone as Dallas Clark catches the ball on the goal line, totally uncovered. DeMeco meets him well after he has crossed the goal line. So easy for Manning.

The play

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d812fb4c8/David-Garrard-Highlight-WK-03-vs-Texans-2009

So easy for Garrard. Not every player makes a great or even good play on every play. You can take one play and claim that as proof of an entire season of doing X, but you know, that would be stupid. We aren’t stupid are we?

by nolander on Dec 4, 2009 12:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Im happy that you brought up the last Jags game because....

that was the game where Cushing froze like a deer caught in headlights and let Garrad strut in the end zone untouched.

by Jordann on Dec 4, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

which again that doesn’t mean his whole season sucks and he has been taking a bunch of plays off. Cushing has obviously been good this year.

Thank you Buck, I also did not know about this clip, it was an enjoyable watch

We need to keep Meco on board to keep the ship sailing in the right direction. Cushing has been a pleasant surprise, exceeding most people’s (including mine) expectations, but it would be a major loss if Cap’n Meco is not here for 2010.
