Texans vs. Rams: Post Game Thread

Was it pretty?... No.  Embarrassing... Maybe.  Does it count in the W column?... Yup.  Neither the offense or the defense played well, but neither played terribly either.  It's a good thing that the Texans pulled out a win against the Null led Rams because I think a loss would have made Gary Kubiak's seat immensely hot.

Leave your rants and raves here.

i think if they played a better team they woulda come into the game better

the fact is no matter how hard u try to get pumped about a game, it is really hard to when u r facing a 1-12 team…im sure this texans team will be ready to go for the Dolphins! Big week next week….do or die…

Why the hell was the game this close?

There’s no excuse for the Texans coming out this flat. If the Texans had lost this game, there would have been no doubt in my mind that Kubiak would have been fired.

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

by The Night Owl on Dec 20, 2009 3:45 PM CST reply actions

Flat?

I don’t get that characterization.

The gameplan was fine, Schaub was crisp, the offensive line kept him clean all day, and the defense played a good game.

The things that kept this from being a healthy victory were dropped passes by a back-up TE, a fumble by a fourth-string RB, and a missed field goal. That doesn’t reflect the team as a whole at all; it just means a few players (who wouldn’t get any PT if it weren’t for injuries) made some mistakes.

Much like the Buffalo game, despite being down 10-6 at the half, there was never any doubt about the outcome of that game. Time to forget about it, hope Cushing and Brown are healthy, and move on to next week.

It also hurt that we had to kick 2 FG in the red zone

It also hurt that our clock management at the end of the 1st half was horrible. It hurt that the playcalling sucked at times. It hurt that we didnt go to Andre til the latter stages of the 1st quarter. It hurt that our running game sucks donkey dick.

Only went to Andre in the later stages of the first quarter?

We hit him twice on our second drive, and it’s not like we had trouble moving the ball through the air on our first drive; it just got killed by an Arian Foster fumble.

The play-calling was basic and intended to create mistake-free football, and it did just that. Schaub didn’t throw a pick, and he never even got touched by the Rams’ defense until the QB sneak. Again, if not for two Dreessen drops and the Foster fumble, nobody would be complaining. Those are individual player mistakes.

And our running game always sucks donkey dick. This is nothing new.

You cant deny that the playcalling this week was a lot safer than last week

and thats a problem people have with Kubiak. He knew we should win the game and played it safely, thats not good.

If by playing it safely, you mean to Chris Brown passes

Otherwise, I don’t get this it all. We had several completions over 25 yards. We have to run the ball SOME because our O is so reliant upon play-action.

I thought our O game-planning was excellent considering our current group of players. The ONLY problem I had was Chris Brown’s mere presence.

I thought the end of the first half was poor clock management

When we got in the red zone we ran it too much and didnt look for Andre at all in the red zone. That screen to Jacoby on 3rd and goal from the 10 was a safe, horrible play call. On the first drive we were having success throwing the ball, then ran it 4 times in a row to barely squeeze out a 1st down, but then Foster fumbled. We played it safe.

A personnel problem I had besides Chris Brown that I havent seen here yet is this: where was James Casey all day?? He was dressed but I didnt see him on the field once.

you dont throw to Andre just to do it, you throw to him in particular coverage looks. Its not like they are just leaving him in man coverage all day. When Foster fumbled, we had driven all the way down the field and he fumbled on the 10 yard line. Thats playing it safe? Driving down deep into their red zone is safe?

sorry that "we played it safe" was supposed to be about the whole game, not just that drive

Why dont you throw to Andre just to do it? He’s the best receiver in the league, nobody on the Rams can cover him, and he was on fire today. We cant run the ball so thats not an option in the red zone, why would we not go to our best player in that situation. If he was covered on every play in the red zone I’d admit I’m wrong, but he wasnt.

no one on the Rams can cover him in man coverage, which isnt what they were doing. He had 2 and sometimes 3 ppl in his area most of the game. And when Matt throws to Andre when hes covered and it gets picked, everyone starts slamming Matt has not being ‘clutch’? He reads the defense and finds the open man, if its not Andre, Kevin and David as just as capable of making the catch.

Okay, but was Andre covered on every play in the red zone??

NO!! I remember one play when Schaub had 3 reads before he looked at an open Andre, but by that time Schaub had pressure on him and the throw was affected.

And when Matt throws to Andre when hes covered and it gets picked

I will have to go back and rewatch the film, but most of the time I remember them doubling Andre in the red zone. Probably because his big catch the play before that put us in the red zone in the first place.

percentages

Kubiaks play calling is based on percentage of success in the end zone. Coverages are completey different in the end zone. less yardage, less time to check his recievers, and more people in a given area. Yea I know I’m statimg the obvious but U don’t want to give away those looks to tape that make andre the best reciever in the league. We will see those in the playoffs when andre knocks indy out of the playoffs. Hahaha I’m so delusional sometimes! Can’t help I bleed red white n blue. Go Texans!

copying my words doesnt make the statement I replied to any less ignorant. Anyone crying about the play calling for this particular game is blindly throwing hate at the coaching staff and avoiding the fact that players didnt make plays. Someone fumbling or dropping a pass doesnt make it a bad play call. I also love how we won the game and you would think we lose from most of the comments. When we lose a game no one wants to hear about how close we were, but when we win, everyone wants to cry about how we should have loss. Im pretty certain alot of people enjoy the agony of defeat.

Im not crying about how we should have lost, because we shouldnt have. Im crying that we should have won by more, is that a problem for you?? Im not saying the players didnt make mistakes, Dreessen had two huge drops and Foster had a key fumble, but on top of that, we played it safely today. It can be both ways by the way. It is possible to play it safe and still have players make mistakes, thats my point but you are too stubborn to see that.

its not so much a problem as it irks me. When I defend certain aspects about how we lost games, I got the “it doesnt matter we lost” card. So I think its only fair to throw it back when tears start flowing after a win. Explain how we played it safe. We throw 65% of the time, we had several plays over 25 yards, Matt threw for 365 yards. Is your idea of aggressive throwing bombs down the field all day? Wait, are you a Rex “fuck it Im going deep” Grossman supporter?

I have already explained how I thought we played it safe

Slip screen to Jacoby on 3rd and goal from the 10, more running than throwing in the red zone, poor clock management at the end of the 1st half forced us to try a FG instead of another shot at the end zone, 4 straight running plays on the first drive when our passing game was working perfectly fine.

so you named 1 play you didnt like, so Im guessing Kubiak has to have 100% likable plays or its playing it safe. Also Redzone:
11 redzone plays
7 passes, 4 runs

At the end of the first half we got the ball with 1:47 and no timeouts and moved 39 yards to get in field goal range. What exactly is the problem with that? It takes time to run up the field and get everyone set to snap the ball.

One play that was a key point in the game

I could name more plays but I dont have the film to go through, thats just one that sticks out in my mind.

Yes it took time to get up to the line of scrimmage, but everyone was up and then we wasted 5 or 6 seconds before an incomplete pass. The play before that one was a 19 yd completion to AJ, it took 20 sec to run that play, run down the field and spike the ball. It took 21 sec for us to complete a 6 yd pass to Jacoby and have another incomplete short pass to Jacoby.

OK, let's look

We got the ball with 1:38 left.

Play 1: Schaub hit as he throws. INC. 2nd and 10. 1:34 left.
Play 2: Schaub hits Anderson. Bad pass. 5 yards.
Play 3: Ball snapped at 1:08. Schaub middle of the field to JJ for 9 yards. 1st down, converting 3rd and 5. Ball at 40.
Play 4: Ball snapped at :47. Schaub to AJ to the Rams’ 40 (should be the 39, in retrospect. Poor spot).
Play 5: Ball spiked at :30.
Play 6: Schaub to JJ for 6 yards. Outstanding tackle by Dahl to keep JJ in bounds. Now 3rd and at the 34.
Play 7: Ball snapped at :08. It looks like Schaub is trying to hit JJ, but he throws it away. :05 left.
Play 8: Well, you know.

We did all this without a TO.

So, yeah, I think your description is pretty accurate, but I’m not sure what Kubiak could’ve done differently. The onus was on Schaub hitting guys in the middle of the field, and then there was Dahl’s truly excellent play.

Poor clock management....

wasn’t to blame in that final drive of the first half. Schaub moved the ball well. The play-calling was on the spot. And Kris Brown missed another field goal for us.

There was plenty of time but our hurry up offense wasn’t as hurry up as it should. Our players weren’t moving like the time was expiring.

Seems to me that the players are more to blame than Kubiak on that one.

but none others. I have no problem with RB screens, but a WR slip screen to our 4th receiver on 3rd and goal from the 10 is not a good play call.

It was.

I hated it. Andre was red hot. He wanted that damn ball. And when he had the ball, he made plays. Why try something else when AJ was in the zone. I defended that other screen play from the other game. I dont remember which one but in this one, im with yall. It was a horrible choice. I haven’t rewatched the game and see if the rams defense bit on it but my initial reaction is that it was a horrible call.

by Jordann on Dec 20, 2009 11:05 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Maybe it’s worth a shot in 1st or 2nd down; but on 3rd down, I think you have to throw the ball into the end-zone.

We’re handicapped with no OD and no running game of course, but between AJ, K-Dub, Anderson, and an offensive line that had been pancaking the Rams all day long, they should have tried a simple pocket pass. Seems like it would have been a good time to bust out that fullback pass that works for us every once in a while.

But as I tried to tell Hoosier, one bad play-call does not a bad game make. We had a few individual mistakes, but overall it was a solid game. It’s a pity the scoreboard didn’t reflect that, yet that was one of those games that you knew we were going to win all along. I don’t care who the opposing team is; when you get to the point where you know you’re gonna beat somebody, you’ve at least got a pretty good team in place.

by Nashmeister on Dec 20, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with the huge impact not having OD has in that situation. That is exactly where he would be catching a TD pass. The only reason I didnt really like that screen play was because it was to JJ. Hes just not strong enough to muscle in there. In hindsight, I would have throw the screen to Moats(like Slaton has scored on many times), or to AJ and let one of them muscle it in there.

Here's why I say it was a flat performance

1. With the passing offense that we have & as terrible as the Rams defense is, there’s no excuse for getting only 1 TD & all first half scoring coming from Kris Brown alone

2. We were playing the Rams who had their 3rd string QB & 2 backup guards starting, and managed to keep Stephen Jackson out of the endzone. How the hell did they score 13 points on us?

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

because they average 11 a game. Shutouts aren’t common.

We held them to 237 net yards which is actually below the Rams’ season average of 295.

Okoye and Barwin played pretty well today. Both made multiple plays.

Barwin’s really coming along as the season winds down.

Andre said he’d be playing his best football as the season winds down, and he is a man of his word. Another beastly performance.

Schaub passed for over 4,000 yards (I believe he’s at 4,181 and 25 TDs) which is a great testament to him staying healthy.

7-7 with a shot to finish at 9-7. It may be ugly, but the Texans won a “trap” game. They have set a franchise record with 4 road wins and a shot at a winning road record next week.

If the Texans, Dolphins and Jets would have finished 9-7 (now impossible, but only requiring 1 loss by the Jets), the first elimination would be the Jets, and we’d win the tie-breaker v. the Phins (we gotta beat them to get to 9-7)

We'd get eliminated by the Jags and Tits if we all finished 9-7 anyhow.

Luckily, the Jets play the Colts, the Tits play the Chargers, the Jags play the Pats, and the Ravens play the Steelers.

Heck, if the Broncos lose to the Raiders then they go play Philly so both wild card spots could be in play.

so they’d have to lose to Pittsburgh (doable) and at Oakland (doable, but not likely…although Oakland plays well at home against good teams).

In the Texans defense (THOUGH THIS WAS A SHITTY GAME) the Rams have played alot of teams close:

STL 7 WAS 9
STL 20 JAC 23
STL 23 NO 28
STL 7 CHI 9

So while the rams suck, they have had some close ones against decent teams…other than CHI anyway.

does not make a starter in the NFL. FS is still a hole, but DT, OG, C, and CB are bigger needs, partially due to Wilson being back next year.

Give me a dry-erase marker and a video monitor...

So I can circle Barber on several blown assignments that lead to 60+ yard TD runs.

He doesn’t have the speed or instincts to play FS, and he doesn’t play the run well enough for SS.

If they keep Pollard and Wilson, maybe, just maybe safety isn’t a priority any more. But I think he’s considerably worse at his position than Robinson or Cody are at their respective positions. As far as I’m concerned, DB depth is still the priority on the defensive side of the ball.

by Nashmeister on Dec 20, 2009 11:28 PM CST up reply actions

his blown assignements were at S. Since hes been put at FS, hes actually played pretty well and as far as speed and instincts, I dont remember any plays he has been beat deep on since being put at FS. I feel WAY more comfortable with him at FS than I do with Dunta at corner. Whats the hate for Cody? He’s actually been pretty solid. He doesnt even play much since that position is a full on rotation.

Agree on Cody...

I’ve actually thought he’s played decent, for playing out of position, like we’ve got him doing. Hustle guy that makes an occasional play. Obviously a huge upgrade over TJ, but we’ve gotta get him solely rotating with Amobi, and not at NT ever.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

by beefy on Dec 21, 2009 1:24 PM CST up reply actions

since you compared him to Robinson or Cody

you lost me, since they both are starters in a rotation.

The amount of time Barber, at FS2, would see the field in 2010 should be significantly less than either of these guys have seen it this season. And they aren’t there because of an injury, like Barber is.

So while I agree that if Barber was our FS1 we’d need to focus on that, I disagree that FS2 should come anywhere near any of our starters that need upgrading. We don’t rotate FS’s.

Agree

This is not an endorsement for Cowher, though I wouldn’t object…but on the after-game show, it was Cowher who commented about another K, can’t remember who or what team, but the guy missed some crucial field goals for the team to win and he said, and I paraphrase, “The guy has to go. You have to do something about that.” All I could think of was that that is exactly the opposite of Kubiak’s method of dealing with those situations. Kubiak “coddles” his kicker, is how I would describe it. The K has cost Kubiak some games and he never did anything about it. He didn’t bring any other K in to put pressure on K. Brown. He did nothing and sent the guy right back out onto the field. K. Brown has his job and now he realizes and the team realizes you can fuck up very badly and you can still have your job in the NFL. Okay, I like Cowher. I haven’t always agreed with everything he has done, but the guy has his perspective on things and in this case, he is right on.

I'm officially going on record that the first rounder should be

OG

I say that for a couple reasons. We can’t say in Chester Pitts is coming back or if he is, how effective he will be, ever. The current starters are no better than a C- overall. I can’t say anything bad about Antoine Caldwell because he simply hasn’t played enough to make any kind of opinion. He is young and comes from good teaching at Bama. I hope he pans out. The remaining bums are just that, bums. So, the starters suck and the depth sucks. The running game sucks and it starts with the interior linemen. I think the Texans need to find someone on the free agent market in the off season. But, that is only one guy, most likely. They need more young guys to bring up through the system, as they are doing with Caldwell. So a draft pick is the way to go. Now, my best reason for wanting to make OG the top priority. Matt Schaub. He needs protection or else his good health is a ticking time bomb. Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak realize that fact, I’m sure and they will do what they need to do and get that hoss young OG in the first round of the draft.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 20, 2009 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

Thats a good idea and all,

but too bad there aren’t any OGs that are deserving of a mid 1st round pick, and there may not be any deserving of a late 1st rounder (if we end up being that lucky). So its a good idea but its not very likely to happen.

Brings up the old debate

Do you draft for need or best available player. I think the Texans have a two glaring needs. OG is my pick for number 1. I say DT is 2nd. Now, if they were to switch those two positions in the draft, I would not be upset. But, I think 1st and 2nd round for those two positions.

Third round, I am still up in the air on that.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 20, 2009 8:42 PM CST up reply actions

I dont agree

There is reaching, and then there is really reaching. Drafting a OG in the mid 1st round would be a huge reach. I think you take the best available at a need position. If there was an OG who is projected late 1st round you could maybe sell me on drafting him in the mid 1st, but not with the situation the way it is now. There are more safeties, CBs, and DTs worth taking in the first round than OG, so thats where I think we should go, on of those 3

The reason why I stated that the Bengals are perfect in their division is because if they do lose out and Baltimore ends up with a 9-7, they have the tie breaker over the Ravens. If we end up with the same record as Baltimore, I don’t know what the tie breaker rules are. I think it’s whoever has the most division wins. In that case, we’re fucked.

Baltimore always holds the tiebreaker over us due to conference record. a 9-7 Texans team goes 6-6 in conference. A 9-7 Ravens team goes 7-5.

Well i believe that if the Bengals lose out, they would still win the division. Once that happens, if they are tied with pitt and the ravens I believe Pitt and Balt would be automatically eliminated

Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.

There’s a valid argument that Kubes would be better server as an OC, but he won’t demote himself. If we can him, he will be in heavy demand as an HC.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Im trying to think of a single HC that has been fired and stayed with the team and Im drawing a blank.

Ive seen it in baseball (In fact, it happened to the Indians manager just this past year), but I don’t recall ever seeing it in the NFL or NBA. But, I could be wrong.
