Greetings Texans fans from the Phinsider! I thought I would create this post to handle any questions you guys had about the Miami Dolphins with our game coming up this Sunday. This will be a big game for both teams trying to keep our respective playoff hopes alive and maybe more so for us since we've never beaten you guys yet. So fire away with your Dolphins questions and we'll answer them as best as we can. Please rec this so it can stay on top for week while we get ready for Sunday, and here's to an injury free game and good luck! But not too much, I'm sure you understand. =)

What is the temperature of Dolphin fans?

Do they feel like they have a strong possibility of being in the playoffs or are they talking like they have already blown it?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 22, 2009 9:42 AM CST reply actions

Well,

we definitely haven’t given up on the playoffs. We have accepted the fact that it will not be easy to get in, and that we have to depend on other teams to make it. But we know that we are still alive and have confidence that our team can still make it.

I think that most of us feel that we have a fairly decent shot at making it in. We know what teams we need to lose, and have a good feeling that it could happen with their remaining schedules. But first and foremost, we know that we have to worry about beating you guys this week and the Steelers next week before anything.

Tony Sparano seems to have an outward fire

And, I think that contrasts with Gary Kubiak. Do Dolphins fans like Tony Sparano? Talk about him and tell me what you like.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 22, 2009 9:49 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, we definitely like Tony Sparano.

Like you said, he’s got an outward fire and he does a good job of transferring that to his players. He seems to get them to play with much more intensity, which was something we hadn’t really seen much of the couple of seasons before last year.

One of the things that I personally like, is his never say die attitude. While we have had some bad games and bad play this season, he doesn’t just let it go. If somebody screws up, he will not hesitate to rip into them and let them know how pissed off he is. He doesn’t let the guys get down and play halfhearted because they lost a close game or didn’t play well. The impression that I get from him is that he will not let the team quit until the season is done.

Is this a playoff game? Will the home field be buzzing like it's a playoff?

And, does it worry you that the Texans have played better on the road this year than at home?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 22, 2009 10:17 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, this is basically a playoff game for us.

So I can imagine that the stadium will be rocking as such. The last couple of games have been pretty much the same way, so the team is already in that mindset.

Personally, this game worries me more than the Steelers game since as I said above, we have never beaten you guys. Add to the fact that you have arguably the best receiver in the game in Andre Johnson going against our 2 rookie CBs, and yeah, I’m worried about this game. The only thing that eases the nerves about this game is that Owen Daniels isn’t playing, since tight ends have absolutely killed us this year, and Daniels is one of the best.

By the way, care to trade Andre Johnson to us? We’ll give you Gibril Wilson and a puppy. Pretty please???

Every fan base has players they love and hate

So what players do you guys at Phinsider love and whom do you wish you could get rid of right now?

by TexansDC on Dec 22, 2009 11:04 AM CST reply actions

Let's see

Players we love: Cameron Wake.

This guy is a monster as a WSLB. He has nasty pass-rushing moves, and apparently just added another to his repertoire. His pass coverage leaves something (a lot, at this point) to be desired. However, having played in a pass-heavy three-down CFL league (where he was asked to do nothing but heckle the quarterback for most of the game as a down-lineman), that’s understandable. He’s smart, having graduated from Penn State (linebacker U), and should be very teachable in all aspects of his game that he’s yet to develop.

If you’ve never heard of this guy, you probably will by the end of our game. He was the one who sacked Brady to force the Channing Crowder pick to end the game. He got pressure on/sacked Garrard to end one of their drives as they were attempting to come back late in the fourth quarter. I don’t recall the specifics of that one exactly. I didn’t get to watch the Titans game, but this guy has as much production as do our starting OLBs in something crazy like half the plays or less. He is a dude to fear when he’s actually on the field.

Chad Henne. The guy has a cannon arm and can make every throw on a good day. He is battling consistency, and his stats say he throws more picks than touchdowns. It’s very misleading, though. One of those picks came in garbage time to San Diego when he wasn’t comfortable leading the offense and wasn’t given as much time to prepare. Plus, they were down and this was his first significant time since a blow out in Arizona last season. Then, a few of those picks were not his fault. His receiver (Ted Ginn, in one instance) bobbled the ball and basically gave Darren Sharper a pick-6 in our deflating loss to the Saints. The one that got away..

The guy is our future at quarterback, and quite possibly will develop into the best signal-caller we’ve had since #13. Never underestimate him. He’s already had something like four fourth-quarter comebacks, too.

Davone Bess. You’ll see why.

Players we hate: Gibril Wilson. We signed this guy from the Raiders of all places, and we have a solid SS (Wilson’s natural position). So, we slotted him in the FS spot. Quite simply, he blows as a FS. He takes awful angles, he lets slow (read: Torry Holt) receivers get behind him, he can’t tackle, and he doesn’t even attempt to break up the pass once he lets it go for a completion. He’s just awful. We have a couple of backup safeties who have the potential to be serviceable starters, but one is a rookie (we already have two rookie starters in the secondary) and the other is still young and apparently not ready to take over. Fortunate for you guys if he starts again; it’s likely AJ will have a huge game if you run his plays on the right side of the field.

Ted Ginn. Well, he’s been cooling off on the hatred, and not everyone over there hates him. I, for one, and starting to warm up to him because of his talent as a kick return specialist. As a receiver? Yeah, I still hate him. He can get behind the defenders sometimes, but doesn’t do so consistently because he can’t run routes. Once the ball comes his way, he can’t catch it. He’s been performing better as of late because not as much pressure is on him and Gibril is taking over as the doghouse specialist. He’s still not starting, however, and Henne has little confidence in him. He’s been wide open a few times only to have Henne not go to him.

Well, I hope Andre has a big day, I think they said he was 415 yards away from breaking Jerry Rice’s single season receiving yardage record, soooo, Andre Johnson could get close.

Schlauton

by Schlauton on Dec 22, 2009 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

Very possible.

It will mainly depend on where he is and where his routes take him. Stuff over the middle that is mainly Wilson’s responsibility will get him some big yards I’m sure.

Maybe not as much if he is covered by our corners. Yes, they are rookies but they have played remarkably well this year. You probably haven’t heard much about Sean Smith this year, but most teams have avoided throwing to receivers he is covering most of the year. They have targeted Vontae Davis much more often than Smith, probably because he is shorter, but Davis has played pretty good too. He has shown the capability to be a good shutdown corner on some of the top receivers such as Moss, but he still makes some rookie mistakes and gets beat.

I do think that Andre will have a pretty good day, he is just too damn good to shut down.

Will Allen is on IR and Nathan Jones is used primarily as a nickel corner.

So you will have Smith and Davis to go against as our starting corners. If you guys can take advantage of their rookie mistakes it will be big for you.

- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter

by riversmccown on Dec 22, 2009 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

He'll definitely remain a corner for the remainder of his Miami career

The guy can flat out blanket a receiver. Quarterbacks don’t even bother throwing his way. He’s also a former wide receiver, so once he gets comfortable and learns to play zone, I think he’ll become a ball-hawk of a CB.

There were questions before we drafted him (not by us, really) about whether or not he should be tried at FS or whether he’d end up playing that position in the NFL long-term.

If he continues developing this way and stays in Miami (only to likely guarantee he never stunts his development be getting tried at S), I think he’ll compare to Nnamdi Asomugha once he hits his prime.

Like Dave said,

I think that Smith will stay at corner for the duration of his career in Miami. He has just been all over his receivers and keeping them covered, so QBs have avoided throwing his direction most of the time. Overall, we’re quite happy with the play of both him and Davis, and excited at the possibility of having 2 legitimate shutdown corners for many years to come.

As a dolfan I differ...

…. i feel Smith is very suspect, and has gotten very lucky! He hasn’t had to defend anyone great. Hint: Match em up with AJ and see what happens, I’d bet both my testicles AJ would make his day hell.

by acme20000 on Dec 27, 2009 6:33 AM CST up reply actions

Lucky?

Even without being matched up against the league’s best wideouts (which Davis has had the fortunes of doing), most of the number two receivers that we’ve faced that he’s matched up against have been solid or above-average number twos. Quarterbacks just don’t throw his way for a reason. He blankets those receivers; If you saw the coverage on Sam Aiken against the Pats when Aiken got the touchdown, that coverage is the type of coverage he often manages to have on his man. Yes, Smith allowed a score, but he had excellent coverage and it was a fluke catch to beat him.

And with those passes that he is forced to defend, he’s got something like a top.. what was it, 30 completion percentage against in the league? And by top 30 I mean top 30 best by Smith, not highest percentage against him.

Hhhmmm, good question.

Some of this would be personal preference obviously, but there are a few that we pretty much agree on.

Love:
1) Lousaka Polite – FB: Polite has been one of the best players on the team, and one of the most underrated ones in our opinion. Up until last week, he was a perfect 8/8 on 3rd or 4th down conversions with 3 or less yards to go, and he only failed to convert 1 last week that I saw. But his main strength has been his blocking. He has been laying out some monstrous blocks on guys all year, handing out pancakes like they were pez. He is one of the big reasons our running game has done so well, even after Ronnie Brown went on IR.

2) Cameron Wake – LB: Wake is another one that pretty much everyone at the Phinsider loves. He is technically a rookie in the NFL, he was on the Giants practice squad in ‘05, but was released before the season started. He played in the CFL the last couple of years and recorded 39 sacks in those 2 seasons. He has been an absolute beast for us when he has played this year. He has almost the same production (sacks, QB hurries, QB hits) as Joey Porter and Jason Taylor, but has that on less than 150 snaps. We’ve been wanting to see him play more downs for a while now, but so far they haven’t really stepped up his usage.

Hate:
1) Gibril Wilson – FS: Wilson was a free agent that we picked up last offseason, and most of us are wishing that we hadn’t. He has been absolutely terrible on coverage all year, and has been burnt quite a few times. He is not really a FS, but more like a SS in the way he plays. Unfortunately, we already have a better SS in Yeremiah Bell, so we’re stuck with him trying to be a FS. He has made some good plays in games, but they have been few and far between in comparison to his bad ones.

2) Ted Ginn – WR/KR: This is one that is really more of personal opinion than anything. Ginn has had a bad case of the dropsies all year. He dropped 2 passes in the end zone that hit him in both hands that would have given us the go ahead TD against the Colts and possibly won us that game. He redeemed himself a little bit with his 2 kick returns for TDs against the Jets, and has shown some improvement in the catching passes department. Some of us think he should be cut or traded after the season, and some of us think we should keep him as a return guy and possibly a #3 wideout.

It seems like every team has a DB they hate.

It is good to see that Dolphin fans like Henne though. How do you guys feel about Pat White? Any upside?

by TexansDC on Dec 22, 2009 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, he definitely has some upside.

About the only thing we don’t like is that the only time we really see White is when Henne is on fire and on a roll and driving downfield, and the OC decides to put White in on a Wildcat-type play that doesn’t get many yards. It just seems to kill the momentum.

But I think once he gets a little more used to the NFL and gets his skills down, he will be a good backup QB and effective as a Wildcat wrinkle player.

How do you guys feel about Miami in the AFC East? Do you guys ever wish that you’d be in a more geographically correct division (with the Jags) or are those East rivalries that good?

by TexansDC on Dec 22, 2009 1:20 PM CST reply actions

We're pretty ok with being in the East.

We have good rivalries with the Pats and a very heated one with the Jets, and the Bills were a big one back in the 80’s and 90’s. So I think we’re fine with staying where we’re at.

Off-topic: Chupathingy is a Red vs Blue reference right?

On-topic: Y’all run a 3-4, yeah? How is your nose tackle? If he’s anything close to decent, he’ll have his way with our interior line.

by cubic on Dec 22, 2009 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Honestly,

Paul Soliai isn’t much more than “close to decent” on a bad day. On a good day, well.. not much better. How is your exterior line? That’s where I’d most like to see our line and OLBs take advantage. If we can pressure Schaub, we’ll be so much better off.

Perhaps Crowder will actually get another sack this weekend.

Doubt it.

Yes, Chupathingy is the RvB reference.

As for the nose tackle, Paul Soliai has been a serviceable replacement for Jason Ferguson since Fergy went on IR. However, that’s been about the extent of it as Dave pointed out. He hasn’t been great, but he hasn’t been really shitty either.

We really miss Ferguson who was just a beast, and we’re probably looking at getting a replacement in the next draft. Fergy said that he would probably play one more year at most, so if he does decide to come back next season, he can teach the rookie some things. Personally, I’m hoping we go for Dan Williams in the draft.

Ted Ginn Jr.

I remember that he was a a first round draft choice. Is he living up to it? it seems like every time I hear something about the Dolphins WR’s, it’s about Greg Camarillo.

by Jordann on Dec 23, 2009 9:40 AM CST reply actions

Not at all

He’s one of the top kick returners in the AFC, but we even debate how accurate that is over at The Phinsider. Mostly because, after his two-returns-for-TDs performance against the Jets, he’s been less Joshua-Cribbs-like.

As a receiver in his third season, he’s got “bust” written all over him. And I don’t mean a firm, juicy bust. I mean a why-the-hell-did-we-waste-a-top-ten-overall-draft-pick-on-this-guy bust. He can only catch on days that don’t end in “y”, can’t run routes when there’s no DB on him, and runs out of bounds after he catches the ball even if every defender on the field were to just stand still.

You mean Ted "Oh God someone's coming to tackle me!! Go to the fetal position!!!" Ginn Jr.??

He has in no way lived up to his 1st round pick. This was supposed to be the year he got going (3rd year), but he has been a major disappointment. He has dropped many many passes, in fact, I think he leads the NFL in drops. He acts like he’s afraid of getting hit and takes his eyes off the ball before it gets there. He dropped 2 TD passes against the Colts that hit him in both hands, and bobbled one that went right to Darren Sharper against the Saints.

Really about the only thing he is bringing to the table at the moment is his speed, and the fact that he will occasionally show flashes of playing good, like the 2 kick returns for TDs against the Jets. He’ll make a catch here or there, but nothing really too big. You probably have more to worry about him as a return man rather than a receiver.

Well, the WRs that you'll see aside from Ginn

are Davone Bess, Greg Camarillo, and Brian Hartline. We also have a rookie Patrick Turner, but he hasn’t played a down yet in a game and has only even been activated for 1 game I think. So I can’t give you any kind of rating on him, even if he does play.

Davone Bess: Usually referred to as a poor mans Wes Welker. He is a great slot receiver with good hands. He did have some drop problems earlier in the year, but those seem to have mostly cleared up and he is more back to his sure handed self. We use him a lot like the Pats use Welker, when we need a clutch catch he’s the one we usually go to.

Greg Camarillo: Cammy has been one of the best receivers we’ve had for a while, and in my opinion, the best overall receiver we currently have. He fits into the mold of the possession receiver, and is solid on making catches. He’s smart and knows how to position himself to make an interception or pass break up more difficult for the defender to do. He is also a guy that we go to a lot when we need a clutch catch. Usually if we need more yards than what a short slant across the middle will get, the ball will probably go towards Camarillo.

Brian Hartline: Well, Hartline is a rookie, so getting a true feel for him is a little sketchy yet. However, he has shown to be a talented kid who can make some tough catches and big plays. For instance, if you can find some highlights of our last game against the Titans, there was a pass that was thrown slightly behind him along the sideline. The Titans CB positioned himself and the ball hit him in the chest, but Hartline stuck his hand in there and knocked it out, bouncing off the Titan guys facemask and right into Hartline’s arms. Then the Titans safety came in and grabbed the ball, but Hartline wrestled the ball away from him all the while dragging the guy with him to the 5 yard line.

What makes it tough to judge is he still will make some rookie mistakes that you can’t fault him too much for, but he seems to be adjusting quickly and well to the level of the NFL. I think that once we finally get ourselves a #1 receiver, Hartline will be an excellent #2 guy.

Boldin would definitely be a good pickup for us.

We’ve been talking about the possibilities of it happening, and we think the Trifecta is going to at least put some serious thought into it. The only thing that concerns me personally is how well is he going to come back with the nagging injuries he’s had most of this year.

Regardless of any of that though, he would be a great addition to our team and I think that there will be some serious talks about picking him up.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.

On Greg Camarillo, you can keep his arms tied up all you want, he can make a catch with just his ass. Someone else from the Phinsider should have a pic of that. As he was falling down, he somehow pinned the ball between his forerarm and his butt and made the reception.
